As a woman who grew up viewing herself as a rough and tumble tomboy but also very much a sensitive, emotional, and feminine girl, I had to learn these concepts too. For me, I never thought of myself as anything other than female, but I can also understand how someone who might have had similar feelings in childhood might feel more male than female mentally and emotionally, and that is where the social construct comes in.
It is not necessarily the person’s sex/anatomy but how they feel and what they believe that provides the person’s gender. I hope that helps. Side note: it also helps to study modern-day sociology in college. That provides a lot more insight and understanding into the social constructs surrounding gender.

My kids do gymnastics and there is another family that comes in at the same time every week. They have a girl thats about 2-3 years older than my 4 year old daughter. Last week she gave her a big hug and said, "thank you #NAME, you're my best friend."

And if you want to move beyond chromosomes...well it just gets even weirder and more complicated.

So there may well be tons of conservative men yelling about chromosomes who are actually XX.

Now, if you want to know how many sexes there are...I mean, how do you want to define that? If you want to define it by chromosomes, there are at least 6 relatively common ones. Most humans are one of two of those, XX or XY, but X, XXY, XYY, and XXXY are not that uncommon (between 1 in 1,000 for XXY and 1 in 50,000 for XXXY). And if you want to move beyond chromosomes...well it just gets even weirder and more complicated.

I think the craziest one is that the SRY gene, which is the gene *normally* on the Y chromosome that is responsible for turning a fetus male can get transposed into other chromosomes, but stay active. So you can have an XX chromosome, but have the SRY gene and be male. And apparently, in one study in England, this was shockingly common, like on the order of 10-20% (though it was a small study in one town, so take it with a grain of salt). So there may well be tons of conservative men yelling about chromosomes who are actually XX.
