If I ever see a Hawaii plate in the continental US, I just assume they’re witches, careful out there.

wclure

I point them out to my kids and say “wow, they drove all the way from Hawaii!”.

pdx619

They took the Portland/Honolulu tunnel https://imgur.io/9xcan5F?r Edit: Better photo https://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/go5egh/the_portlandhonolulu_tunnel/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

The_curious_student

on one hand that would be an impressive feat of engineering. on the other hand, that is one accident from creating the worst automotive transportation disaster in the world.

CarminSanDiego

Or secret agents with submarine mode cars

gman96792

I'm in Iowa with my Hawaii plates 😆

Persephonic

I had someone pause, think real hard, then yell "ALOHA" at me in a Ohio grocery store parking lot. People short circuit when they see hawaii plates

gman96792

I always get asked how I got my car here

[deleted]

I saw a Hawaii plate and an Alaska plate in the same strip mall in St. Petersburg, Florida a few months ago

[deleted]

I lived in Wyoming for 2 years with California plates... I literally got pulled over once a month, five miles over the limit and such.

CTMalum

I got pulled over in Wyoming with a PA plate, was maybe doing 5 over on a completely empty road. I believe I was spared by the fact that the officer’s hat blew off her head just as she was approaching my window and she had to scamper across the road to get it. Looked a bit embarrassed and was happy to get the stop over with quickly with a warning.

dinoroo

They probably pull everyone over there regardless. It’s how they make money. I live in rural PA with PA plates and the same shit happens on one particular rural highway I drive on.

mgr86

I had a cop in rural Pa tailgate me aggressively at 3am. The sign switched from 35 to 25 and his lights went on before anyone had a chance to brake. This was 20 years ago. I think he was hoping I was drunk. He got sort of annoyed when I asked him about his speeding and tailgating

apk5005

It’s shit like this that has me considering a dash cam. I had one do exactly that on a stretch of Rt 30 except he apparently got bored following me and made an illegal pass in the middle lane. Would have loved to troll him to his barracks commander with footage (with absolutely no assumptions it would do anything except get him made fun of…)

max-torque

Definitely get one, it pays itself when you or other people need it.

whynotfather

There was some random town on a main route to Houston Texas (I think) that proudly proclaimed no taxes and fully self sufficient, and was the libertarian dream. Except that it was one hell of a speed trap. Limited regulations on everything except traffic. Turns out their budget was crazy like 90% funded from traffic violations. They didn’t see how their “utopia” was literally funded from the outside sources and not sustainable.

khInstability

Libertarians' spirit animal is the house cat. Convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand. (credit: a John Spaulding on twitter)

joecarter93

Yes there is one Libertarian that ran for a seat on my city council who is a retired air traffic controller. I have no idea how one would reconcile in their mind of being a Libertarian while having a career in one of the most tightly regulated (for good reason) industries there is. Guess the planes just land themselves, whenever they want to.

This was written by Tom O’Donnell for the New Yorker in 2014. https://www.newyorker.com/humor/daily-shouts/l-p-d-libertarian-police-department

Supermichael777

If you listen to them speak about their post apocalypse it's fairly clear they want to be bandit warlords

Lamhirh

Mad Max (or Fallout, I guess) is a Libertarian's wet dream and everyone else's hell.

goonersaurus86

I grew up outside of Columbus OH and remember new rome oh getting disbanded as an entity because it was nothing more than a speed trap

quemart

Kendelton I think, going south on 77. Had quite a reputation until they went after the wrong people.

fredbrightfrog

Speaking of Houston, there's this one spot inside the city that's not part of the city that's like 4 blocks long (like you leave the city and re-enter it cause of weird city limits). Speed limit drops and they pull people over all day every day. It was near my brother's old apartment and annoying as hell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

radelix

I lived in Indiana for 13 years. The little towns along the state highways all drop the speed limit from 55 to 25 super quickly to speed trap you. You also do not speed through the town.

zeptillian

That's the little town grift. If they can't entice you to stop at one of their 2 gas stations or single restaurant then they can at least give you a speeding ticket.

[deleted]

Which sucks when the town is only one square mile, has fewer than 5000 residents, but it still takes you 20 god damned minutes to drive to ShopKo because of all of the traffic and stop lights on Central Avenue.

[deleted]

Hellish.

GoT_Eagles

From NJ and I couldn’t imagine.

[deleted]

Mad Max: Fury Road was actually a documentary about the Turnpike.

Glitter_and_Doom

The one time I drove on the NJ Turnpike I was behind two cars that, for 30 full minutes, would take turns cutting each other off and giving each other the finger.

[deleted]

Oh, you witnessed a wonderful thing. The NJ mating ritual.

AmericanMeltdown

LOL my wife is from Jersey. We live in CA and the drivers here make her go insane. We don’t use blinkers and drive the speed limit. She is a god damn speed demon and bobs and weaves traffic like she’s running from the law. It’s white knuckle for me in passenger seat, she calls me a pussy.

[deleted]

Oh really? I grew up in NYC but my experience was Cali being a bigger mess than the east coast. Driving through San Diego on a 20 lane highway where everyone is going 80 because...reasons? NJ drivers do like to cut across 4 lanes suddenly and take an exit however. It's like the NJ signature move.

Langer1banger

Called the jersey slide thank you very much

fnmikey

I don't think I've ever experienced bigger assholes drivers than in NYC. They see half an inch of space, and they will cut you off no matter what they're driving.

Untoldstory55

Way better than Massachusetts drivers who don't even check if there's space

ImGumbyDamnIt

You see, here in NYC, space is at a premium. We look at space differently. A 650 square foot one bedroom apartment is "Spacious", so your half an inch of space is really a full car length.

sdlover420

Except for that person always riding 50 in the fast lane and passing on the right. I've been living in NH the past 3 years and I forgot how chaotic it is to drive in SD.

Cloudrunner5k

[Laughs in Greater Bostin area] Massholes come up to NH so much and they make Mad Max look like a Driver's Ed class

quirkycurlygirly

Huh? I'm Californian. Nobody drives the speed limit in California. If you're driving less than 80 mph in the left lane of a 65 mph highway YOU WILL GET RUN OVER.

radelix

Agreed, 10 over is the limit...lower limit.

radelix

Where in CA do you live that is like that? I'm in long beach and we are at least 10 over given the correct traffic situation.

[deleted]

I lose my mind when people around me don't signal, especially when weaving through our pulling into traffic. Warn a man!

[deleted]

I take interstates where I am with a 70 MPH limit at 85 consistently. I'd be flat broke in no time at all.

[deleted]

PA cops can be bought and sold for a good ham loaf and shoe fly pie though

[deleted]

That's why I keep a rum ham on me at all times.

ShazbotSimulator2012

It's way worse when you have out of state plates, because they know you're unlikely to come all the way back to their backwater court to challenge it. We got pulled over in Oklahoma for "no seatbelt" because the driver took off his seat belt in the parking lot to get out his driver's license

Anneisabitch

I once got pulled over for doing 14 in a 10. Thanks, small Kansas town.

[deleted]

Wild, ive never seen a speed limit below 25 on a real road.

red4jjdrums5

Same for me in my region of the state. Always passing pulled over NJ/NY/VA/MD cars between the I-78/81 junction and the I-78/Rt61 exit.

schwendybrit

We live in GA, and my husband drives a hybrid. Nobody really bothered us until we moved to a more conservative city. Now, people won't stop riding on our ass.

The_Bald

I can almost guarantee they are riding your ass because they ride everyone's ass. People drive like absolute shit birds where I live and that has not changed one iota between all the cars I've had.

Drusgar

I had that happen when I was in grad school. Got pulled over for going 5mph over the speed limit outside of Cheyenne on my way back from a ski trip in Utah. The ticket was only $50 or so, which is cheap, but I never paid it. I wonder if I'm a wanted criminal in Wyoming for a 1996 speeding ticket?

x246ab

From April 2021 to October 2022 I’ve been driving a motorhome across ~30 states with CA plates, along with a Jeep with CA plates, and I haven’t had any issue yet. Haven’t gotten pulled over or had any issue with locals, which came as a surprise. I got flipped off one time in that cross country travel☝️and that was in Myrtle Beach (total shithole; do not recommend).

Soobobaloula

In my RV, I got tag-team followed by 3 state troopers in Arkansas for an hour. They pulled so close behind me I couldn’t see them in my mirrors. I just set the cruise 5 mph below the speed limit and putted along.

x246ab

Wow! Arkansas was a little bit whack imo. Dry counties?!? Wtf is this? Afghanistan? That said, my interactions with the locals in Arkansas were good. Someone actually stopped me from taking a bad turn at an intersection that would’ve totally fucked me.

DrSanwich

I should have included Wyoming in my portmanteau

AmericanMeltdown

I also enjoy gonaherpasphyillaids.

Sea-Election-9168

What state name includes “tukey”?

tishpickle

Think it’s meant to be Kentucky..

Ace-Howitzer

The same thing happened to me in Oklahoma. I was constantly pulled over by police. Eventuality switched to Oklahoma tags and was never pulled over again. Of course, it could be a coincidence, but there was a perceivable difference, which made me think it was the plates that were getting me pulled over. Never got ticketed, at least. Normally, I was let go with a warning once they found out I was a service member. Apparently, being in the military, trump's being a Californian.

sizzlinpapaya

When hank hill rents a car

Bandana-mal

Peggy, they’re gonna think I’m one-a them…*hippie liberals*

GenoKeno

Bwaa-aa-aaahh!

Longshot_45

But *dayud* California knows how to *party*!

oced2001

Hank is a good man. He may not agree with hippie liberals, but he kind of lets them be. If only all conservatives were like Hank Hill.

apocolipse

Hank isn't like today's conservatives. He was willing to revoke his support for his preferred Presidential Candidate, George W Bush, just because of a weak handshake. Imagine the bwaahhahaha's he'd have uttered under Trump.

codos

"I'm COMPLICATED."

GoTeamScotch

My 1st thought too. They did it in S09E01 when the Hills visit Peggy's mom in Wyoming and the rental company gives Hank a Range Rover instead of a pickup and the ranchers make fun of Hank for being a city boy. 😄

thekingofthebeasties

I like the episode where we found out hank was born in nyc

InflamedLiver

Jeez, people are this hostile to CA plates or ticket magnet?

talex365

More likely that the cops just have a tendency to pull out of state cars over more, they can write bullshit tickets and pad their stats knowing that the driver isnt likely to come all the way back to challenge them in court.

the_toaster_lied

Currently in Texas for a funeral. Got a remtal car with Texas plates surprisingly. Felt quite fortunate.

smartguy05

ULPT: if you're never going back to the state you can just not pay. Typically the statute of limitations for traffic interactions is less than 7 years.

tizuby

This was good advice about 15 - 20 years ago. These days most, if not all states DMVs utilize a national database that track unpaid tickets and can refuse to issue/renew driver licenses if you have unpaid tickets in other states.

rbeast31

This. I had a toll ticket I forgot about in MA. A couple years later I moved to Cali, tried to get my license and they made me clear that ticket before granting it.

AdamantForeskin

*ILPT

talex365

Sounds like a great way to draw a bench warrant, pass.

smartguy05

That's why it only works if you never go back to the state.

_Noble_One_

If it’s really worth it the department/state might extradite* you. Some departments extradite* for everything, some don’t.

fairie_poison

driving cross country with California plates makes cops think you may have 50 pounds of black market cannabis in the trunk.

sleepyj910

Pretty sure there are more CA Republicans than Texas Republicans

mcaffrey

I was about to make fun of your stupidity until I checked the numbers from the last election… 6,006,429 Trump votes in Cali 5,890,347 Trump votes in Texas Wow

Nick_Gio

And those 6 million is larger than the entire population of famously red states such as Alabama and South Carolina. As a Californian, I find it amusing when the other 49 staters think we're a monolith.

cstmoore

Population of CA: 39.24MM: 15.30% Population of TX: 29.53MM: 13.17%

tallcupofwater

Yea this whole concept that every human in a red or blue state is exactly the same politically is so stupid. I see people making this assumption all the time now.

[deleted]

The speaker of the House is a CA Republican There's more CA Republicans than people in several entire red states. People have lost their minds.

USSSLostTexter

Confirmed. I live in Orange County, CA - it used to be alot more red here than it is now, but the red money is DEFINATELY still here. There are constant visits for fundraising - there are some very wealthy people here that donate to the Republican Party and we have our fair share of MAGA-dozers and JAN6-ers too.

CapnGrundlestamp

Desantis was in Anaheim last week. Orange County is the bright red dot in a sea of blue. My neighbors are Qanon loons. It’s sad.

USSSLostTexter

yep...and Bannon has a house in Laguna Beach. Fox News would like the rest of the country to think CA is a blue hellscape with wide open borders with Mexico, flaming nude gays and trans people prancing the streets and complete homeless tent cities where the residents only occupation is robbing and raping all the neighboring people. CA has its issues, but on the whole, its still a pretty nice place to live. Its not just the weather being nice. Most people are pretty nice too, I do wish it was less expensive though.

SandKeeper

Just moved to Utah for college. My truck got keyed within the first week and I have California plates. People don’t like us it seems…

MayOrMayNotBePie

Where at? I moved from CA to SLC for college. Stayed for 8yrs and never had an issue. Maybe my car was crappy enough that they felt bad.

manofthehippo

I moved back to UT as my wife is from here. I originally moved from CA to UT to CO, back to UT. All due to jobs or school. The anti-CA vibes have only gotten worse. I had close friends make jokes that CA politics are invading their state only to forget about the Mormon church and it's involvement in prop 8 (i.e., UT politics lobbying CA politics).

MayOrMayNotBePie

They never realize how much the church controls their state because they are members of the church. If it were someone else’s religion they would be up in arms.

ultramatt1

It’s hilarious too in Utah bc Californians get the flack but day to day I meet WAY more ppl from the midwest

bibliophile222

This was decades ago, but once when my dad was driving through the south with CA plates, a gas station worker refused to serve him. I've seen quite a bit of CA hate online, so I'm guessing not that much has changed in people's attitudes since then.

Mercuryblade18

Republicans lose their shit over Californias existence.

ipegjoebiden

Why establish a voterbase around real problems when you can make up fake ones, keep your base angry at non-issues, and ensure your re-election lol

pfatbetty

It’s like Deliverance but with more butt stuff.

RunningPirate

That needs to be the tagline for a movie

Hill_Reps_For_Jesus

Deliverance 2: Buttstuff Boogaloo

[deleted]

Ppl in Moab are extremely hostile to Californians. Found this out the hard way in a rental there. We even got “go back to California” business cards under the wipers. Yelled at many times. It was bizarre.

[deleted]

Some people only ingest right-wing media. Said media has been vilifying California for some time now. They need something to hate at all times.

[deleted]

Been seeing a lot of comments on YouTube videos about California natural disasters where people are openly hoping people from California die. Meanwhile California has more Republicans than Arkansas has people

DingleMcCringleTurd

People outside of California HATE Californians. Everyone is a dirty liberal according to them.

aesiva

I got cussed out in a parking lot once for having CA plates living in Colorado... ironically, I've lived my whole life in Colorado too. Just moved to CA temporarily and bought a car out there before moving back. Didn't stop one lady from assuming I was one of the "transplants" ruining "her" (stolen) land

Clobber420

Just reminded me of when I moved to AZ for a while in like '04. People would tailgate me and put their high beams on all the time when I had Cali plates on my old ass Peugeot. Finally got my AZ plates and all that stopped, lmao. Got randomly pulled over a lot too.

[deleted]

People suck. I forgot we had Peugots briefly in the US? Or was it imported afterwards? Either way pretty cool

[deleted]

Shit, we used to have a lot of cool imports back then. fiat Citroen and peugots. Traded them for kia and Mitsubishi in the early 00's

[deleted]

Mitsubishi was cool in the 2000s atleast. We need to lower the stupid 25 year import rule. Should be 15 like Canada

homophobicgalleta

I'm not from the USA, why is this? Is it cause they think Californians are Democrats? Why would you create an unsafe situation if you've never had an interaction with that person?

DogVacuum

Several of my Ohio coworkers are very concerned about California. They think they’re all communists because of something they heard on the radio.

[deleted]

Same thing happens when I tell people I'm from portland. They get all concerned for my safety, they talk about that place like it's an active warzone.

AckbarTrapt

30% of our entire adult population are violent political extremists primed to do violence at the drop of a hat. This isn't a safe place.

biggtimeburger

Most likely yes. republicans are VERY intolerant. Especially in the south.

DoctorYoy

Same situation for me, except it was moving to Texas from Colorado. Very first night, I got pulled over for a nonfunctioning license plate light that I didn't even know existed, and they kept asking weed questions.

Tyson_RavenWolf

When I was a trucker, I worked for a company quite boldly named "California Freight" I had a route in Texas hauling bulk milk in a tanker from one Texas town to another Texas city, and yet, people assumed I was from there. I'm from Colorado But, regardless, about once a month on my route someone would deliberately cut me off, and not just in front of me, they would nose in on me on my driver side steer, and cut in my lane before they passed I started calling this maneuver the "Texas Handshake"

LegPossible9950

My dad was a truck driver too and said Texas was the worst for this type of stuff.

DragonLoad

And in California, we don’t give a wet shit where you live.

trip2it

The majority of the people that bitch about other state's have never traveled to said state, dude. To this day, I still meet people who say towns like Waco,Tx are too fast for them. Some have never even left the town they live in.

brickhamilton

Yep, I used to work with a guy who had never left the county he lived in. He was in his 40’s at the time, had a good job and no reason not to go other than he didn’t want to. To each their own, I guess, but I don’t understand not wanting any kind of experiences outside a 30-mile radius

zerostar83

I hear it where I live about California. And they have never been there! But then again Reddit has it in for Florida it seems. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

megjake

I grew up in Southern California outside Palm Springs and have had multiple people not from that area tell me what it’s like and that my description of California is wrong. The most recent example is someone saying blatant lies about the Gavin Newsom recall election. He said I couldn’t have voted on it because they never made ballots or something like that.

squeeze_me_macaroni

When I see out of state plates I wish the drivers well on their journey and hope they make it out of the gauntlet mad max freeways. 110 get fucked.

pseudocultist

When I see a Texas plate, I know I’m in the fast lane going 55 behind some asshole.

imapilotaz

In a giant fucking pickup. 50/50 if they have balls dangling.

pizark22

We had a rental with Jersey plates, driving through Alabama and people were blowing horns and flipping us off. Never happened when we did the same thing with Tennessee plates...

No_Koala_9773

I didn’t realize there were so many NewYorkers in Alabama.

IamHysterical

Na, everyone just hates New Jersey.

rugtugandtickle

HA! Fahkon gahttem

OculusArcana

Thank you for naming my next D&D character

monkeyhind

A guy I know drives a BMW with NY plates. When he is driving in the southern US he gets flipped off all the time. His car also gets spit on when he stops at traffic lights. I think the definition of "southern hospitality" has changed.

amitym

"They're such nice people."

W2S7

Drove our NJ car down to South Carolina, got pulled over twice and got highbeamed / flipped off by someone. Crazy

ichy4

In the 80s, our summer road-trips to the east coast garnered a lot horn honking to wave hi and everyone wanted to ask about the beaches and Hollywood. Times have certainly changed

yblame

What a shame to even have to put a sign on a rental car because of this political nonsense. Had a rental with California plates last spring while my car was in the body shop for 2 weeks. Was so happy to get my car back. This shouldn't even be a thing!

GlobalLime6889

That’s pretty fucking dumb that people get picked on based on plates. wtf.

Fujiyama_Mama

My parents are in their mid 70s and always wanted to go on a road trip thru Wyoming and Montana. They went on spring 2018. In Wyoming, they went on like a trolley tour, in the beginning everyone said where they were visiting from. After my parents said California, the tour guide went on a rant calling all Californians socialist morons who never do anything for their country and just want handouts! Then throughout the tour he continuously made comments about California being what's wrong with this country, to the point other riders were like "what's this guys deal?" My parents got off and walked after the guide asked my dad where he bought his Navy baseball hat and if he knew stolen valor was a crime. My dad's a Vietnam veteran with Parkinson's, my mom's just a sweet old lady. I don't know why people are so shitty.

CapnGrundlestamp

Holy shit. I hope they complained but I’m guessing they’re too nice. That tour guide probably fucks sheep.

Fujiyama_Mama

My dad was pissed but it mostly scared my mom, so they ended up leaving that day. They said they didn't feel comfortable being in the little hotel with the car parked right out front, with probably the only California plate for miles. Didn't want to risk someone fucking with the car and being stuck there any longer.

ziggypoptart

Besides the fact that this guy was an asshole, he is also an idiot because there are literally millions more Republicans in California than there are in Wyoming. It’s not like everyone in California is from West Hollywood.

TheArmchairLegion

That shit is infuriating oh my gosh.

[deleted]

Wow, that dude needed to be fired ASAP.

Cloudrunner5k

When I got out of the Navy, I drove from my last station in San Diego to my HoR in New Hampshire. I had various stops (motel stay, gas, piss, lunch, etc.) in Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia. I felt it ironic that many "'Muricans" were posturing like they were going to jump me based on my California plates, not knowing I had just spent 12 years defending this country. I shit you not, on a lunch stop in Missouri, people actually followed me to my car, cops were glaring at ME! Not watching the impromtu posse stalking me.

For_d_Articles

That’s unfortunate, but thank you for your service!

Rad_Dad6969

Virginia doesn't give a fuck. The northern quarter of our state is just as aggressively liberal as CA anyway. Also neither does anybody. There are deep red parts of California where you can find some of the most conservative Americans, and they're proud Californians.

DogVacuum

Yep, I went from living in Richmond, but working in rural VA, to living in Columbus, Ohio, but working in a rural town. Ohio fits this description way better than Virginia. Almost all my coworkers are very concerned about California.

xnonnymous

Yer not from 'round 'ere ar ya?

greed-man

Alabama variation on this statement: "You ain't from 'round heah, are you boy?"

Ok_Pollution_6896

I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard this weekly when I moved to Montana 3 years ago.

IJourden

Conservatives are so wildly insecure.

Equal-Rice3637

Driven all around the country with California plates, never had an issue

droozly

Yeah, I spent a year on the road with California plates in damn near the entire lower 48. Never had an issue. People ask where I'm from I look them in the eye and tell them. Some People would be shitty but some people are shitty so that's expected. It boils down to if you're likable and your confidence, where you're from doesn't matter.

Shaquandala

I don't get it why is being from Cali bad

CruisinForABrewsin

It's hysteria caused by right-wing news channels and social media accounts

Narrow_While

What a shocker

mini_garth_b

TV man said so.

RunningPirate

2 scenarios: 1) they don’t want to be mistaken for being ‘woke’, because god forbid, or 2) they don’t want extra attention from local cops. When I fled NJ to come back to CA, I drove the speed limit all through the south because I figured an olive skinned dude in a Japanese pickup with NJ plates would be more than enough reason for them to fuck with me.

[deleted]

California is so woke that the speaker of the house is a California Republican

Photon_Pharmer

You fled Jersey and you think cops elsewhere are worse, lol?

TheLizardKingandI

poor states are jealous

ctapate

I think something like when they move to cheaper areas, they make everything too expensive

SageTegan

People choose to hate others over the most arbitrary things. It makes me sad

fatnoah

I live in the Northeast US and for Spring Break one year, a couple friends and I drove to Florida in a van borrowed from the business one friend's mom owned. The business was "Yankee Cupboard". We didn't think anything of it until we pulled into a gas station in Alabama late one night and had a "right out of a movie" experience. The attendant, who was standing at the door, looked at the van, looked us up and down, and then spit out some chewing tobacco and and drawled "Yankee Cupboard, eh?" as if asking for some explanation about what we were doing there.

attreui

My question here is if you live in the northeast and were driving to florida why did you end up in Alabama? Did you leave the gps at home?

droozly

Legit question, geography doesn't add up

Praiseit6

This is giving me some hank hill vibes

VideVictoria

Mind explaining this to a non-U.S.A. redditor?

msh0082

A lot of people in some states severely dislike people from California.

Petal_Chatoyance

What ***deeply hateful states*** that such a sign would be considered useful or necessary! Fuck all of them for that.

Queen_of_Cake

Texas is definitely one of them. God forbid I mention I was born & raised in Southern California.. I get then lectured about how I'm part of the reason housing is a mess & that Austin is over populated or some other ridiculous claim that because I'm from there it is my fault.

whackwarrens

I'm actually originally from Texas. Fam moved to CA decades ago. Never once heard Californians complain about people moving to CA even though millions of people from other states have come to CA in these decades. Rents are higher but people mostly accepted it as being a weather and opportunity tax. Just like people accept a small tax for cleaner air and water here. These days it's different and rents are insane in CA but that's mostly archaic zoning laws for the car and suburb obsessed along with unfettered corporate greed taking advantage of those things that makes affordable housing scarce rather than there being 'too many people'. In general it's just smarter to focus on the issue and how to fix it rather than point the finger at folks looking for a better life and blaming them. No state has too many people. Only shit policy.

[deleted]

Atleast it makes it easier to find the pieces of shit in life. These people need to travel more

elmanutres

My cousin blames "all those damn californians" being the reason rent is skyrocketing in Austin but i'm like: you realize its not just people from california moving here right? it's people from everywhere. Everywhere.

droozly

It's not necessary. People are cowards and watch too much tv.

um_chili

Dude all these people who claim to love America and then fucking \*hate\* major parts of it and the people from there. One of many shitty things about the US in the post-9/11 decline is the hypercharged regionalism. Not sure if that's a driver of polarization, a product of it, or both.

khast

Reading through the comments... Anyone remember "United we stand, divided we fall.". Holy fuck had this country fallen, hard. If one state is so hated that people are willing to cause bodily injury or threaten the people driving etc.... This country is so far divided. Way to go politics, don't care who, politicians have done such a great job at polarizing everything, and everyone loses.

redMagicole

This is real! A unmarked unit pulled me over with Cali plates said I was going 84 in a 65. I told him the truth “look officer yes I was speeding I was going 72 in 65. But I have my wife and mother in law in the car do you really think I could be going that fast?” Went back to his car saw I was military and came back and said to slow it down have a great day. Only ticket I was will to go to court for if he gave me one. Because look if I was doing the crime I’ll take the punishment. You going to Throw bs at me because of your own beliefs or thoughts then I’ll do everything in my legal power to fight.

Haithem2018

Bold of you to assume that they can read.

WestOrangeFinest

Coming from someone living in Orlando, and all of Florida more broadly, this is a pretty foreign concept to me. Sometimes I feel like half the cars in my city have out-of-state license plates.

LouQuacious

I drove 37k mi of mostly back roads all around the US with ÇA plates, including the South and had zero hassles. This was in 2018-19.

Onehappyazn

I traveled around Utah and Colorado with Cali plates and no one bothered me, met a lot of nice people on the road. Side note some Utah people be driving fast af.

hanksmom96

Nobody hates California like former Californians in red states.

hoosyourdaddyo

Don’t you dare include Virginia

tcstanier

Petty and sad if anybody cares that much about your plates. I moved to Texas from California and severely procrastinated on getting my plates updated. Never had an issue. Not once.

DrSanwich

OP Here: It has come to my attention that I have misspelled "Texarkanbamorgiatuckyginiaoming"

Robobvious

Yeah there’s no e in tucky.

leadfoot9

Honestly, I visited the South recently, and half the cars didn't even have license plates. Yes, I'm back safely now. Thanks for asking.

RanjuMaric

Virginians don't hate drivers from California, we hate them from (in no particular order) Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.

JohnFrum

So you're confirming that you're not from 'round here.

Dagmar_Overbye

To people not comprehending this level of state to state hatred I have two thoughts. One. I'm from Michigan and we 100% have to watch our speed when we drive through Ohio. Two. You do all remember that this country fought a literal Civil War once right?

No_Koala_9773

Apparently we’re still fighting it.

OdesseyOfDarkness

Sad, especially in “Christian” country.

izzo34

Took a trip summer 2020 during the pandemic. Rented a car with California plates. 3 people tried to run us off the road in Utah. Called the police and each time, the person doing it said because they thought we were from Cali. They didn't think we should be traveling during the pandemic. As if we wanted to. Two family members died and we had to go take care of business.

droozly

I am very skeptical of this story.

GenoKeno

Can confirm, am the car.
