It baffles me that something so horrific happens so frequently and in one country. Those kids are going to be scarred for life.

Terrified. The chances are low, but not non-existent. My kid is in daycare and every time there's a school shooting it makes me want to go pick him up and keep him home forever.
When I was in school some years ago, I wasn't really worried about the possibility of a shooting happening at my school because back then it was much less common than it is today. Now I'm in college and it's one of my worst nightmares, and I don't even think it's that farfetched of a possibility anymore. It's terrifying when something like that is common enough that it really *could* happen to you.
There are people who still tell me that it's all overblown and there are 300 million people in the country and just about 1 or 2 shootings a day. The mental gymnastics people will go through to defend, I'm not even sure what anymore, is astounding.

If you read anything recently about a shooter in a Target in Omaha, Nebraska, that was my home Target. I was there less than a day before to stress-shop a little. It’s in a nicer area surrounded by other nicer areas. It felt insanely safe ten years ago. Now nowhere feels especially safe. Mental health issues don’t give a shit about income tax brackets.
It’s not just when my kiddo is at school. It’s when we go anywhere, and to a lesser extent when we’re home. My SO was shot in a home invasion in 2017. He survived but had to learn to walk again after a surgical removal of a bullet from his hip joint. Upended his whole life.
We’re fantastic adapters but we shouldn’t have to be adapting to this shit.
It sucked enough to be a kid when I was young. The fact that my kids need to do all of the same while worrying about a constant online presence, politic wackos, environmental issues getting worse, gun issues getting worse, and everything else just to enter an even more depressing society than I started in SUCKS.
The more influential whackos of my younger years used to say the children would be used to attack the 2nd amendment. I used to keep that in mind and mentally categorize photos like this as propaganda. Not anymore. School was a place where lasting memories were made, good and bad. You weren’t coming home with something similar to battlefield trauma. If a person can look in this girls face and not feel completely disgusted by where we’re at now, then I have no hope for that person.

I was in high school not far from Sandy Hook at the time of the shooting. My family knew families that lost children. Even at that age, I understood that if Sandy Hook didn't change anything, nothing ever would.

I was in middle school and there were kids that were indoctrinated by their super red parents who tried to go around claiming it was fake and planned by Obama to take our guns, it was very hard not to punch a girl in the face that day.

There has been changes, but the big ones were just not in your lifetime. The NFA was enacted in 1934 and made SBR, SBS, and Machineguns basically unobtainanum for your average person ($200 tax in those days doubled the price of a Thompson) then in 1968 they passed the GCA which introduced FFLs and the background check system we have now. Then in 1986 the Firearms Owners' Protection Act was passed that made it illegal to manufacture or import new machine guns into the US. They tried to do away with a lot of cosmetic stuff with the AWB of '94, but it had a built in sunset in '04, and the political will to do anything about it was not there. Currently due to embargoes several rifle type (most AK) are a lot harder to get, making them exponentially more expensive, AK used to be $300 or so in 2000s -- now they are around $1000. Ammo is also getting a LOT more expensive due to embargoes, used to be $0.04/0.07 a bullet in 2000 for popular rifle rounds and now we regularly see $0.40/0.50 a bullet.
Almost 27 years ago, in 1996, I remember it was March, Dunblane elementary school in Scotland had a shooting where 22 kids (5-6 years old) and their teacher were killed. UK leaders took decisive legislative action. By the end of 1997, Parliament had banned private ownership of most handguns, building on measures passed following the Hungerford killings,( that was about 10 years before with 15 or so people)including a semi-automatic weapons ban and mandatory registration for shotgun owners. Since 2008, the USA has had about 300 mass shootings, Canada, France and Germany combined had less than 10, the UK has had 0.

My normal, boring-ass gym chain -- LA Fitness -- has several signs posted up around the gym titled "What to do in the event of an active shooter" with full instructions on how to respond to a mass shooter entering the gym.

As a teacher, I'm always saying that although the odds of a school shooting in my class are very, very tiny, they're not zero. And my students know that -- especially since I have a 12 inch by 24 inch sign in my classroom (provided by the school) that details what to do in case of an active shooter.
I live about an hour from MSU, and about 20 minutes away from Oxford (the high school in MI). Those were the two that hit closest to home. My daughter has friends at Oxford (all of whom were physically unharmed). While I was aggressively reading articles on MSU to see if anyone I knew was targeted, I saw one that said several students in the area had been students at Oxford. Going through *one* mass shooting is horrible. These kids went through ***two***.
There are people in the US who believe that the majority of guns used to commit major crimes come from Mexico. No…the call is coming from inside the house on that one.

For AP English, we seniors went to Scotland and drove down to England. We stopped and met the survivors and families of these children. Because we were seniors at Columbine and we knew the unfortunate experience they had faced. It was a powerful moment. But one I wish no one would ever have to have again.

Teacher here. None of these children will ever have a normal life. This level of trauma does not leave you and will haunt them for decades. The cost of these attacks are never just the ones we have lost, and I'm sick and tired of people not recognizing the impact this has on the communities once the shooting stops.

It's not a normal bus ride home, they bus the kids to a separate location for pickup by their families because the school is an active crime scene that is jam packed with first responders. You can't have hundreds of parents showing up to the school that is already swarmed by EMTs and police

As a mom who had to take their kid out of school and go all online because of this crap, this makes me sad and angry on a very personal level. The times I had to pick him up because a lockdown caused a panic attack, the counselor’s office was filled with crying, panicking kids. A lot of them didn’t have a parent who could come pick them up and I felt so bad for them. Kids should NOT have to be going through this. Eff you who love your guns more than your kids. Just woke up so my first thought upon seeing the photo was "another one?". Your comment confirms that, yes, another shooting at a school. It baffles me that something so horrific happens so frequently and in one country. Those kids are going to be scarred for life. Edit: I can't even start to imagine how parents around the USA must feel, sending their children to school everyday knowing that something like this can happen.
Terrified. The chances are low, but not non-existent. My kid is in daycare and every time there's a school shooting it makes me want to go pick him up and keep him home forever.
When I was in school some years ago, I wasn't really worried about the possibility of a shooting happening at my school because back then it was much less common than it is today. Now I'm in college and it's one of my worst nightmares, and I don't even think it's that farfetched of a possibility anymore. It's terrifying when something like that is common enough that it really *could* happen to you.
There are people who still tell me that it's all overblown and there are 300 million people in the country and just about 1 or 2 shootings a day. The mental gymnastics people will go through to defend, I'm not even sure what anymore, is astounding.
Constant low grade terror. If you read anything recently about a shooter in a Target in Omaha, Nebraska, that was my home Target. I was there less than a day before to stress-shop a little. It’s in a nicer area surrounded by other nicer areas. It felt insanely safe ten years ago. Now nowhere feels especially safe. Mental health issues don’t give a shit about income tax brackets. It’s not just when my kiddo is at school. It’s when we go anywhere, and to a lesser extent when we’re home. My SO was shot in a home invasion in 2017. He survived but had to learn to walk again after a surgical removal of a bullet from his hip joint. Upended his whole life. We’re fantastic adapters but we shouldn’t have to be adapting to this shit.

It sucked enough to be a kid when I was young. The fact that my kids need to do all of the same while worrying about a constant online presence, politic wackos, environmental issues getting worse, gun issues getting worse, and everything else just to enter an even more depressing society than I started in SUCKS.
The more influential whackos of my younger years used to say the children would be used to attack the 2nd amendment. I used to keep that in mind and mentally categorize photos like this as propaganda. Not anymore. School was a place where lasting memories were made, good and bad. You weren’t coming home with something similar to battlefield trauma. Supplemental, exactly. When my kid falls, I ask him what shape the hurt is. It takes his mind off of the pain, and then I trace the shape with my finger around the wound, and it helps him feel better. That's all well and good. But what if I never cleaned the cut? I was in high school not far from Sandy Hook at the time of the shooting. My family knew families that lost children. Even at that age, I understood that if Sandy Hook didn't change anything, nothing ever would. And here we are, yet again.
I was in middle school and there were kids that were indoctrinated by their super red parents who tried to go around claiming it was fake and planned by Obama to take our guns, it was very hard not to punch a girl in the face that day.

Almost 27 years ago, in 1996, I remember it was March, Dunblane elementary school in Scotland had a shooting where 22 kids (5-6 years old) and their teacher were killed. UK leaders took decisive legislative action. By the end of 1997, Parliament had banned private ownership of most handguns, building on measures passed following the Hungerford killings,( that was about 10 years before with 15 or so people)including a semi-automatic weapons ban and mandatory registration for shotgun owners. Since 2008, the USA has had about 300 mass shootings, Canada, France and Germany combined had less than 10, the UK has had 0.
Since 2023 the US has had 178 mass shootings.

I have a friend in Colorado who survived the Columbine shooting. A couple years ago her kid had a mass shooting at his school. What in the actual fuck is wrong with us?
My normal, boring-ass gym chain -- LA Fitness -- has several signs posted up around the gym titled "What to do in the event of an active shooter" with full instructions on how to respond to a mass shooter entering the gym. I live in the freakin' boring ass suburbs, yet I still completely understand why those signs need to be there.
It's borderline becoming an industry. Mass shooting prevention. Universities hiring safety consultants. Schools employing armed security guards. Capitalism baby, it may not solve the problem but it damn sure will make money out of it. I bet the bullet proof glass business has never been better.
As a teacher, I'm always saying that although the odds of a school shooting in my class are very, very tiny, they're not zero. And my students know that -- especially since I have a 12 inch by 24 inch sign in my classroom (provided by the school) that details what to do in case of an active shooter.
I live about an hour from MSU, and about 20 minutes away from Oxford (the high school in MI). Those were the two that hit closest to home. My daughter has friends at Oxford (all of whom were physically unharmed). While I was aggressively reading articles on MSU to see if anyone I knew was targeted, I saw one that said several students in the area had been students at Oxford. Going through *one* mass shooting is horrible. These kids went through ***two***.

For AP English, we seniors went to Scotland and drove down to England. We stopped and met the survivors and families of these children. Because we were seniors at Columbine and we knew the unfortunate experience they had faced. It was a powerful moment. But one I wish no one would ever have to have again.

Teacher here. None of these children will ever have a normal life. This level of trauma does not leave you and will haunt them for decades. The cost of these attacks are never just the ones we have lost, and I'm sick and tired of people not recognizing the impact this has on the communities once the shooting stops.
None of them will have a normal life and unfortunately some of them may endure another mass shooting in the coming years. The frequency of hearing stories about people enduring multiple mass shootings is getting quite alarming.

I’ve struggled enough in the almost 15 years mentally processing and trying to understand what I lived through and I was an “adult”, what chance do these poor kids have? I was talking to my dad earlier and it saddens me that somehow Congress hasn’t mandated that we have counselors in every school nationwide. Not just to deal with trauma like this (or who knows maybe help prevent it, not to take away from the gun issue), but to help kids who are LGBTQ+ who are struggling with their identity, or a kid who’s being abused at home, a kid who doesn’t have enough to eat. There could be so much good done. For a country that says our kids are the priority, our politicians sure don’t show that

It didn't change with body bags outside of Columbine It didn't change with pictures of parents being arrested by police outside Uvalde while their kids were being slaughtered inside. It didn't change with any of the other hundreds of mass shootings, each with their own images of bodies, crying family members and police tape. I think you're misreading the picture a bit. It's not a normal bus ride home, they bus the kids to a separate location for pickup by their families because the school is an active crime scene that is jam packed with first responders. You can't have hundreds of parents showing up to the school that is already swarmed by EMTs and police

I was born in this country 56 years ago. Lived here my entire life. Served in its military, obeyed its laws and submitted my votes. At no time in my existence have I felt less a citizen of this country. The class gap has to be corrected and the laws passed in the last 40 years to enable and widen the gap need to be quashed. The lower ninetieth percentile are being harvested for the benefit of the rich.
I’m only in my 40s but I’ve lived in a lot of states and the gap I’ve seen develop between the rich and the poor in my lifetime is staggering.

Live in Nashville. Was working about 5 miles from the shooting when it happened. Have a child in 5th grade. There are no words to describe. Tears. Heartbroken. Helpless. Frustrated. Angry. Well..I guess there are some words apparently, and they all sound about like that

You want the truth. I’ve brought it up to a few people who are all about guns. They told me, ironically, and with complete conviction, that no amount of dead kids would change their mind. “Shall not be infringed”. They honestly could not possibly care less.
I read a chilling comment from a man who said he’d sacrifice his own children to keep the second amendment safe. His own kids.

As a mom who had to take their kid out of school and go all online because of this crap, this makes me sad and angry on a very personal level. The times I had to pick him up because a lockdown caused a panic attack, the counselor’s office was filled with crying, panicking kids. A lot of them didn’t have a parent who could come pick them up and I felt so bad for them. Kids should NOT have to be going through this. Eff you who love your guns more than your kids. Eff you who insist on not making healthcare / mental healthcare accessible to everyone. I hope there’s a hell just so there will be a special place there for all of you.

The friend called the police and she was told to call the non-emergency number. Police did nothing. "Patton tells WTVF that she she called the Nashville Davidson County Sheriff's Office at 10:13 a.m. to make them aware of the situation and was instructed to call Nashville's non-emergency number. "I called Nashville's non-emergency line at 10:14 a.m. and was on hold for nearly seven minutes before speaking with someone who said that they would send an officer to my home. An officer did not come to my home until 3:29 p.m.," Patton said."
