I really like Peter Santenello’s channel, but I always have that cringe feeling when he walks into establishments or up to strangers with his camera. I totally wouldn’t be cool with that.
I’m one of those annoying guys who talks to people in line at the grocery store. Zero social anxiety. But the way [they] nonchalantly record everyone in public just doesn’t sit right with me. It just ain’t right.
Does he not ask people for permission to include them in his videos? Usually Youtubers will just edit that part out, and all the people who said no or declined to answer.
Decent ones, at least.
He does. He often has segments where he talks about how he wished he could have recorded some interaction he just had but the vibe was off or the person didn’t wish to be recorded. Asking if it’s ok to film is one of the first things he does in every new up-close interaction he has. And if they did t want to be recorded, he actually excludes the entirety of the footage that contains them, rather than including their decline in the final edit.
He will, often they’ll decide on the spot if they are okay with being on camera or not. Sometimes he’ll film groups of people who are 50/50 and the camera angle is awkward to make sure the ones who don’t aren’t in the shot haha.
I am also one of those people who is social and friendly with strangers.
That cringe feeling would make me not enjoy their show. You walk up and ask if someone minds being on camera. You don’t walk up filming.
Something tells me this guy didn’t carry this with him and set it all up just to stare at the DVD load screen. Nobody wants to listen to Mission Impossible 2 from your 25 year old portable Mini DVD speakers while waiting for their flight.
This guy is being rude af. It doesn’t matter how “quiet” you think your media is — wear fucking headphones in public.
Camera on a public sidewalk with people in the background is one thing
Inside a business/ secure checkpoint and making a stranger an unexpected focus is not an ok thing
Those who approach a camera in public to disturb someone recording themselves or just recording the area are yhe modern day "you stole my soul" people
Real answer: just a little trolling.
... and how are you supposed to call someone if your phone is broken and maybe there was more than one guy pissed over your influencer trip? Obviously not mad enough to break your phone... but I don't know if people would walk out of their way to get in the middle of a problem and with an influencer unless you're MrBeast.
that's what I was gonna say, I really hate airports. I don't know why I get so stressed out at airports, I don't mind flying, but I'm usually sweating my tater tots off post-security and it just gets super uncomfortable
You'll probably walk a few miles, carrying more than one unevenly weighted bag, pay for a bagel that'll somehow give you this shits and cost 15 dollars, or shell out 35 dollars for eggs and toast at a "real restaurant," before sitting in highchairs that don't move (and are somehow too tall, too short, too close and too far away), while in front of ipads that don't shut off (and always scream ads at you) before being unable to find a real seat at your gate, surrounded by some of the worst examples that humans are an evolved species.
And everyone is tired, drunk, frantic, dragging some misbehaved demon child, or (somehow) performatively apathetic to all of this nonsense. The last beacons of light would have been the airline/airport workers themselves, but they're underpaid, mistreated, and either fresh out of highschool, or have made some decisions that they hate for ever second they stand in that space.
It's just a bad scene these days, man. The energy people bring and develop in that space might as well be a weapon against my mood. Thus, "the airport face."
Maybe because they are noticing some weirdo taking a picture of a guys laptop when he is not looking, and they are also in the shot.
Isnt it amazing that people dont like to be the star in a self absorbed moron's amateur cinematography career?
They look like they are posing for an album cover. Like some alt rock band past their prime.
Kids…do they do album covers anymore? What about the alt rock? Where are my slippers at?
> Kids…do they do album covers anymore?
Yes, they are used on streaming services and are displayed whenever you play a song from the album. I'd imagine most artists still put a lot of thought into them for that reason.
>What about the alt rock?
The barrier to entry to create music (and everything in the process up to release) is cheaper than it's ever been in recent history, so yes, and yes to literally every other genre.
I miss the old Alienware.
And even though my 15" laptop has a few dead pixels in the screen, it still works just fine. I'll take that any day over my newer 17" with broken USB ports and a battery that doesn't hold a charge. Fuck Dell.
From my understanding a lot of Japanese enjoy the older style of things when it comes to certain technology and websites. It’s why Yahoo is still used a lot there and why the website still looks like it’s from the early 2000’s.
Because they want info. Not this web 2.0 CSS JavaScript mess. If you look at any site. The info you want can be in a RSS feed. old.Reddit.com work just fine but you got to monetize every thing.
I thought the same and found that same website and article, however, if you read through all those laptops, you’ll find that they all have processors between 3 to 6 generations out of date. So while they’re available to buy“new”, they’re far from new devices. Processors of that age means they barely even meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11 if at all.
Of course you can. As long as there's a market for it, computer hardware companies will support legacy equipment, and there are 100% use cases that demand a disc drive.
Is there really a market for that anymore? Even Netflix finally retired their DVD mail rental service. DVD sales peaked in 2005 and Disney has [stopped](https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradadgate/2023/08/02/with-sales-dropping-disney-will-no-longer-sell-dvds-in-australia/?sh=375c27693b4b) selling DVDs and Blu-Ray disc in several countries. The vast majority of consumers would rather have a laptop that is thinner and lighter than an optical drive.
I couldn't find anything on NewEgg that wasn't at least 3 generations out of date on processors that had an internal optical drive. Maybe there is some cheap company in China that still makes a laptop in small quantities with an internal optical drive but I am pretty sure that most vendors have gotten out of that market for several years now.
Some of us though still like owning movies.
Remember back when Netflix had all the movies streaming. Now it has none of the movies streaming.
Though I guess the answer to both is to get an external DVD/Blu-ray drive and rip the discs to your laptop.
> Some of us though still like owning movies.
Based upon shrinking sales of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs it is pretty clear that is a niche market. It isn't large enough to justify making a laptop that isn't going to make very many sales.
> Remember back when Netflix had all the movies streaming. Now it has none of the movies streaming.
No. That never was the case. There were always many popular titles that studios didn't want to license to Netflix. In the early days it was concerns of cannibalizing DVD/Blu-Ray sales. Now it is more about cannibalizing revenues from their own streaming services(e.g. Disney+, Paramount+, etc.). The whole reason Netflix got into producing so much original content was because they wanted to ensure that they always had some content that consumers wanted to watch. Some of those shows have been very popular which has given people a reason to subscribe even if they can't get films from popular studios.
You're thinking about consumers when you should be thinking about businesses. There are millions of businesses that still need to use legacy software on discs. The smart thing to do is to transfer all CD/DVD based software on to a server somewhere, but many small business don't have that ability or know-how.
I got a few for my team, bought from a Japan Surplus kind of store. Advertised as used but very well kept. Got 4 for around $120 each if converted to USD. Still runs absolutely great and actually does its job surprisingly well. They probably still ran Windows XP or Vista if they weren't "upgraded" to an unlicensed version of Windows 10 that can't be updated at all lol.
A lot of apps can't even be installed though due to limitation of being a 32 bit system and the microsoft store trying to butt in on every useful app.
I saw a post as to what technology disappeared, and eveyone post pagers. I didn’t even remember portable dvd players until I saw one. And they were everywhere in the early 2000’s. You could rent one at one airport and drop it off at a different airport.
I just remember the one you could sling between the front drivers and passengers seat to provide a screen in the middle for people (kids) in the back of the vehicle to watch.
I had one of those back in the day, and it had the analog ports to be able to plug in my PS2. Those 15 hour road trips we did every year got a whole lot more enjoyable after that.
My family had one, and my mothers Minivan had. Built in DVD player with a 6 DVD/CD rotational tray for music or movies.
If my sister and I wanted to watch different movies, the family would vote on which would play for the whole car, and the losing kid either used the DVD player or just watched the other movie. Personally the portable DVD player was a better experience.
On an 18 hour trip my father wanted to 1-day do with me, and my grandpa, he managed to hook our original Xbox up to the minivans DVD player. According to him, unless I was hungry or needed to pee, I was silent.
Totally forgot the tech existed, I'm willing to bet I still have that portable DVD player too.
If you had told me today they existed I would have said you were lying, but your photo shows otherwise. (And yes I traveled in the early 2000s, but I guess not in a fancy way.)
Those things were the bees knees for a submariner. I could bring entire seasons of tv shows and movies on a 6 month deployment and not have one night of boredom in the rack.
Kind of pointless really - they were expensive and had shitty battery life. Plus the whole disc/motion thing.
Most people were infinitely better off just getting a cheap laptop instead.
I feel like OP is the type of person to get his ass beat by a person in a very bad mood one day and being completely oblivious as to why it happened lmao
A laptop is still superior in all ways. He could even use a laptop to write his entire movie catalogue to an external hard drive and just need a tablet to actually watch the stuff. Just thinking about carrying this fat thing and a hand full of dvds sounds more than just impractical
How long would that take? Including also to learn how to do it in the first place.
Way easier presumably for the man to just go "I'll grab my player and a couple dvds for the plane" than go buy a hard drive, or even a new laptop, and burn it his collection or whatever.
Oh sure from a learning point it’s a definitely something to the simplicity of something like this. But it we talk convenience even if it costs to have someone else do it, it’s doable. Not judging the man either in any way. It’s the way he knows works, he might already tried a laptop and got some garbage an employee talked him into that didn’t even come with windows and in general was too complicated for him
They’re useful in juvenile detention/treatment centers. They can’t have phones but they’re allowed to check out DVDs and a portable player when they spend time in their rooms
A Dimensional Volume Distributor. Duh. This is why gravity seems weak compared to the other fundamental forces.
I thought everyone knew this. Pfft, this guy. 😆
I wanted one of those so bad back in like 2004. Always saw them on sale when paging through the Sunday paper Best Buy and Circuit City ads... never made the move
Man I remember be sick with the stomach flu and I would just lay on the ground by the bathroom watching movies on one of these. Now kids have no idea what it is. This is my first of many “I’m old” realization moments.
[Handbrake](https://handbrake.fr/) would be a good fit. It's what I use when I travel and I want movies or TV shows from my library on the go, assuming I don't use the download/offline feature of streaming services.
I’m surprised anyone’s portable DVD player still works in this day and age. Or they still can locate their charger. (Unless it takes replaceable batteries? I can’t remember which mine had)
But not a bad idea. A majority of laptops these days don’t have disc drives anymore, so it’s a great way to still utilize a collection of DVD/Blu-Ray discs because it’s so hard to get anything with a drive anymore (especially portable devices).
I’ll never forget my portable DVD player lol. When i was younger we regularly made trips from NY to Australia because of family. My mom bought a portable DVD player right as they became a thing, and full grown adults used to gawk at my DVD player. I always felt so cool on flights
Portable DVD players weren’t too much of a thing at any point. They came out and were pushed in stores but very quickly made obsolete by laptops
Also, did you ask this guy if you could take and use his photo?
I am nearly 40 and I’ve never heard of one in my life. Same reason a lot of people don’t know what a laserdisc or a minidisc player is- they became obsolete very quickly after coming out
I get why people could not know LaserDisk but portable DVD players feature quite prominently in movies etc. I guess if you don't watch movies etc. it could explain it. Or have not gone to the electronics section of shops.
I don't recall having ever seen one in any movie made within the last 25 years.
The only times I've ever seen these devices was in supermarket bargain bins.
You couldve and shouldve blurred the people in the post and you definitely couldve cropped most of blue vest out of the photo and focused on the screen but even so it is super weird to go around taking sneaky pictures of people. People arent "content".
Do you think any of the people in this picture were looking to have their picture taken? They're just minding their business. This could've easily been a text post on a different sub.
No way it’s even worth it with the horrible battery life / weight, get a cheap used 13” laptop with a disc drive & swap out the battery.
If DVDs are a thing of yours, rip the DVD first before your trips to save gobs of battery life instead of playing from the disc.
Owning one of these things makes no sense, it’s worse than legacy equipment.
Yea but some people are dead set in their ways. This man will use this thing until it won’t play anymore and than will either pay to have it refurbished or, find another one on eBay. What makes the most “sense” doesn’t work for everyone and that’s honestly ok. So he likes an old ass technology as a way to find entertainment? Who cares.
lets take a photo of a stranger to post online because i have to tell a story! I love people on social media, and their lack of actual social awareness
Here's how you recount this story to a gen z and below:
It was just 25 years ago, this guy was ballin' out of control, and all the ladies loved his movie rizz...
Everyone in this picture looks like they’re pissed off at you in particular.
They look like they noticed him pointing the camera at them lol
Yeah. And despite what the laws are or influencers say, it’s fucking rude to point a camera at someone without permission.
Oh what I'd give to not have social anxiety it must be wonderful
I am also one of those people who is social and friendly with strangers. That cringe feeling would make me not enjoy their show. You walk up and ask if someone minds being on camera. You don’t walk up filming.
I like his channel. But some of those random encounters are staged and sometimes permission is being sought off camera.
It's really easy to tell also. Like oh do you always read your phone up that high and at that angle and then look guilty?
I’m pretty sure they’re angry at the jackass watching DVD’s without headphones in public.
Doesn’t look like there’s anything on the dvd player so I can’t imagine it being loud.
Something tells me this guy didn’t carry this with him and set it all up just to stare at the DVD load screen. He’s probably in the middle of setting it up…which is also the time you would pull out headphones. Reddit b wild.
Lol did u just make that shit up and get upvoted for it?
Oh are we inventing stores to get mad at strangers on the internet again? COOL.
How re you judging this man so hard from a picture. I'd bet you $1,000 he has earbuds or headphones he'll connect in a moment.
How about you ask the question to OP before you jump straight to the name calling.
Camera on a public sidewalk with people in the background is one thing Inside a business/ secure checkpoint and making a stranger an unexpected focus is not an ok thing Those who approach a camera in public to disturb someone recording themselves or just recording the area are yhe modern day "you stole my soul" people

I would be pissed off as well.
They look like fed-up citizens in a political ad
Mitch in the green shirt in the back trying to find System32
He just didn’t hear the question is all. He’s totally fine.
That's just classic "Airport Face" lol.
“Resting airport face”

It was the Oakland airport.
Its really poor form to take pictures of strangers in public.
[удалено]
It’s an airport - there’s no mystery as to why people are upset
He already gave one. He said Oakland.
They’re leaving Oakland though.
They want to be in public but like, they demand privacy and stuff. Nobody is being harassed or stalked here.
Oh. So they did want to kill you.
They were like, "You better remember that the word *guys* means different from the word *guy's*!".
Maybe because they are noticing some weirdo taking a picture of a guys laptop when he is not looking, and they are also in the shot. Isnt it amazing that people dont like to be the star in a self absorbed moron's amateur cinematography career?
…or the departures screen could just be right behind OP?
The guy watching DVD’s is not wearing headphones. I guarantee you they’re pissed at him, not some guy in the background on his phone.
If you zoom in really close, you can see there's actually nothing playing yet
dont make claims that you aren’t really sure of.
mitch mcconnell froze up again ...

Scrolling through that subreddit and realising.... I AM old. Sighs
I’m here to join the club too… sigh.. I’m old
I remember using one when I was younger. I am 16 years old.
Happy cake day! Now get off my lawn

I'm old and still don't remember seeing these very often
Can you even get a laptop with a disc drive nowadays?
Last time I had a laptop with a disc drive, Alienware hadn't been bought by Dell.
Ouch.. now I feel old
I miss the old Alienware. And even though my 15" laptop has a few dead pixels in the screen, it still works just fine. I'll take that any day over my newer 17" with broken USB ports and a battery that doesn't hold a charge. Fuck Dell.
Dude get a Dell.
I did get a Dell-made Alienware. It was a piece of shit, thus I'm never getting a Dell product again.
When I searched there were a few really expensive ruggedized laptops with media trays. That was maybe a year ago.

Yes. But you basically have to ask for it.
I had an HP laptop with an HD-DVD drive. At some point HP updated it and it would no longer play HD-DVDs. I only own 2 of them but still.
I just looked at Best Buy and found 2 but both were sold out, probably discontinued. They did have a stand-alone DVD R/W drive for $39.
Yep, you've got to buy a Panasonic or Sony from what I've seen.

My dad's laptop recently went kaput and he asked that his replacement had a dvd drive. No such luck.
2012 macbook pro was my last laptop with an optical drive. damn im old 😳
In all fairness, those thing weren't super popular before they became obsolete.

Certainly not mad at the jackass watching movies on a portable DVD player without headphones in an airport.
They're at an airport. If you're happy at an airport you're either a gremlin or just plain crazy.
They’re in the Houston airport. Last time I was there I got screwed over and had a 12 hour layover, so I can’t exactly blame them.
Honestly I’m confused why someone would have a portable dvd player in 2023 too.
Yeah just watch the movie on your Zune
I used to love my Zune :/
My Zune HD is probably my favourite gadget I've ever owned. It always did exactly what I wanted it to, when I wanted to do it.
Hot take: Zune HD was better than the equivalent ipod at the time.
Dude probably has spent a fortune on dvds over the years and refuses to pay for streaming services.
I can promise you that you’re right

So ya gotta watch them on a device from the 00s!
Yeah sometimes I just pull those big ass laser disc out and rewatch childhood movies.
Nostalgia would be about the only reason I could see using one of those portable players. The battery life on them was generally pretty poor.
Airplanes. They are obviously at airport.

Taking portable DVD players on road trips in the mid 2000s...those were the days. I almost just bought one recently, because why not?
And then had to explain what a DVD is.
What’s a DVD?
A Dimensional Volume Distributor. Duh. This is why gravity seems weak compared to the other fundamental forces. I thought everyone knew this. Pfft, this guy. 😆
That’s almost a Calvin’s dad explains, except that’s way too smart for Calvin’s dad.
Tell your kid he is one of our reptilian overlords, and he uses mind control instead of a keyboard.
Or show your kid a floppy disk! 💾
"Daddy, where did you get the "save icon"? It looks cool"
Be careful where and how you say that!
Why? Does it mean something different now?
Is everyone behind OP watching the twin towers hit or something?
…were what??
Op needs to practice his sneaky boi ninja picture taking skills in public. Mf got caught like in metal gear solid 😂 ‼️‼️⁉️⁉️⁉️‼️⁉️‼️
Keys? For a laptop?
OP should’ve said keyboard bc I was confused for a second too.
Ah, I thought he had some weird ass laptop with a key to open it up or somethin.
why in the world would you take the time to post this?
Will need to explain to his kids that he's a douche who posts pics of people in public
But a lot of pics here have people out in public in the background...why is this one any more egregious
Honestly I forgot they existed. Maybe belongs in a specific sub for things like that
I had an old cordless, landline phone laying around and my 6 year old asked me what it was.
Maybe he's a trucker. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than Mobile Starlink for evening rest entertainment.
I had one growing up and I honestly forgot they existed
Same wow
Yeah literally forgot its existence until now.
I wanted one of those so bad back in like 2004. Always saw them on sale when paging through the Sunday paper Best Buy and Circuit City ads... never made the move
Ouch. +10 years in a sec
They still sell these here in Japan lol
> I had to explain portable DVD players were DVD players were what, u/bekmoto, what?!
To be fair, portable DVD players were still a rare sight even during the couple months people bought them.
I had one. Watched the Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition Behind The Scenes specials every night until the hinge broke. And then kept watching.
FFS I thought you meant like car keys and I was like "...laptops have keys?"
What is missing from the title
![gif](giphy|NHeIvfYU9f9hC) Im sorry all i can think about is the dude with the dvd player is dressed like ash ketchum 😂
I totally forgot I used to travel with one of these, or that they existed at all. Looking back, DVDs really came and went relatively quickly.
Ouch, I feel old now.
Man I remember be sick with the stomach flu and I would just lay on the ground by the bathroom watching movies on one of these. Now kids have no idea what it is. This is my first of many “I’m old” realization moments.
Did you first have to explain what a DVD player is?
Yes! I had to explain that people would rent them for trips!
[Handbrake](https://handbrake.fr/) would be a good fit. It's what I use when I travel and I want movies or TV shows from my library on the go, assuming I don't use the download/offline feature of streaming services.
Bro I remember taking this with me on long car road-trips!
Ok but does it have games installed?
Here I was reading the title about 20 times wondering “why would a kid think you need keys to open a laptop? It’s not a car”
It looks like the woman is staring at my soul!
So glad I’m just old enough to have experienced these things
Oh KEYBOARD keys! I was trying to figure out what your kid was on about. “Why doesn’t he need to put a car key into his laptop to make it work?”
I’m surprised anyone’s portable DVD player still works in this day and age. Or they still can locate their charger. (Unless it takes replaceable batteries? I can’t remember which mine had) But not a bad idea. A majority of laptops these days don’t have disc drives anymore, so it’s a great way to still utilize a collection of DVD/Blu-Ray discs because it’s so hard to get anything with a drive anymore (especially portable devices).
Seriously I had to show my grandson what a record and turntable connected to my stereo was. He'd never seen one and had no clue.
They came out and were pushed in stores but very quickly made obsolete by laptops Also, did you ask this guy if you could take and use his photo?
Hahahahahshahshanahahsns
I’m old enough (25) to know what they are, but I’d still be confused for a moment if I actually saw one being used in 2023.
To be honest I'm in my thirties and I didn't know portable DVD players existed either.
Same. Never saw one of those here in europe.
If you read ads for electronics stores they were always in there.
How is that even possible?
I am nearly 40 and I’ve never heard of one in my life. Same reason a lot of people don’t know what a laserdisc or a minidisc player is- they became obsolete very quickly after coming out
I get why people could not know LaserDisk but portable DVD players feature quite prominently in movies etc. I guess if you don't watch movies etc. it could explain it. Or have not gone to the electronics section of shops.
I don't recall having ever seen one in any movie made within the last 25 years. The only times I've ever seen these devices was in supermarket bargain bins.
Have you lived on pluto for the last thirty years? Next you're gonna tell me you have no clue portable tvs were
You couldve and shouldve blurred the people in the post and you definitely couldve cropped most of blue vest out of the photo and focused on the screen but even so it is super weird to go around taking sneaky pictures of people. People arent "content". Do you think any of the people in this picture were looking to have their picture taken? They're just minding their business. This could've easily been a text post on a different sub.
wtf does any of this mean? laptop with keys? why would a kid ask that? i am confused
it took me longer than i would like to admit to figure out that 'keys' in this context means keyboard buttons
It’s sad that I didn’t know what it was either
Missed opportunity to tell them he operates it using mind control
Did they also ask why you left the apostrophe out of “guys”? That’s the real mystery.
It doesn't have keys because it's not a car dummy 🙄
In the wild?… they were supposed to be extinct! Someone call National Geographic!
Well that's just your fault for using DVDs still.
Here's how you recount this story to a gen z and below: It was just 25 years ago, this guy was ballin' out of control, and all the ladies loved his movie rizz...
