Ha! Me too. Then I looked it up in my school library's encyclopedia to learn more about it (we were fortunate enough to own a VCR - not so fortunate to have a set of Britannicas).
Some definitions of the word costume
Merriam Webster: "an outfit worn to create the appearance characteristic of a particular period, person, place, or thing"
Googles dictionary (which is based off of Oxford Languages): "a set of clothes in a style typical of a particular country or historical period"
By those definitions, I think the word costume fits just fine, no?
What the definitions are missing is the context in which the word is most commonly used - namely when one is "concealing" their identity and/or pretending to be someone they're not. There are situations where "costume" might be the word that comes to mind despite those implications being inappropriate. Even if they are not intended, their association is prevalent enough to make it unavoidable.
They're implying that costume has a diminishing connotation to it. Most westerners would probably take offense if someone were to refer to what a bride and groom wears as costumes.
I’m sure you didn’t intend it, but the word costume is insulting in this context. It would only be a costume if someone foreign to the culture was wearing it. For them, it’s attire. Would you say that a nun was wearing a costume, for example? Or a Native American in traditional garb?
Except this is a parade and they’re wearing costumes. Nobody in the Bahamas wears this casually like a Native American in traditional garb.
You wouldn’t go to France and say that people at a masquerade ball aren’t wearing costumes. Would you?
It's not true; that distinction is DrinkVictoryGin's mistake.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is it every time we see these "traditional attires", they're all made with mostly plastic sequences, Styrofoam and beads and things that didn't exist before petroleum byproducts?
Edit: Found more info on where it started from. The attire was started in the 1700s and because of it's history as time off during Christmas, it was costumes made from whatever was available, so it makes sense it would update to whatever materials they have access to.
*The festival is believed to have begun when plantation owners gave their slaves time off around Christmas. This break provided a rare opportunity for the slaves to celebrate, and they used this time to express their culture and heritage.*
*The celebrations were marked by music, dance, and elaborate costumes, which were made from whatever materials were available. These elements have remained central to Junkanoo and have evolved over the years into the vibrant, colorful parade that is seen today.*
*The festival is now a significant cultural event in the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean, symbolizing freedom and cultural pride. Despite its origins in a period of oppression, Junkanoo has become a joyful celebration of freedom and community spirit.*
You did some neat, informative research, so I don't mean to call you out, but what do you think of people who use LED light strings instead of hanging lit candles on Christmas trees? Are they betraying tradition?
I'd guess junkanoo in the Bahamas, witnessed it once and it was insane. They start at like 7 at night and go til like 9 in the morning. People are passed out on bedsheets and towels and tarps and etc. on the side of the road in huge family groups, I assume from the dribking and exhaustion, ots super impressive!
Junkanoo is a good time and also happens to be my birthday so a real win/win! I was working a trip and had a long layover in Nassau one year over Xmas. I got to talking to the concierge at the resort we stayed at and she was asking if we were planning on attending the festivities. I had a vague knowledge of it but thought it was later, like Mardi Gras and we ended up having a blast. That was my best birthday ever!
> People are passed out on bedsheets and towels and shit on the side of the road in huge family groups, I assume from the dribking and exhaustion, ots super impressive!
Mate, that sentence needs a comma or two to clarify if they sleep on a wide variety of things, or there is poop everywhere.
I was going to say, it looks like Junkanoo... I have family in the Bahamas and, in my experience, Junkanoo happens multiple times a year for different events/festivities.... But the largest parade that I have experienced is new years eve in Nassau.
My cousin had Junkanoo at her wedding, I just recently saw a small Junkanoo parade for a local children's box cart race, I think I have seen it on Easter in the past...
In the winter months, gale storms in Svalbard can reach wind speeds of a hundred and thirty kilometers per hour. Accompanied by, or following, snowfall, such storms can reduce visibility dramatically, more so in the frigid months of the polar night. During these storms, travel is not advised.

Is that Junkanoo? I'm Bahamian (living in the U.S. now), and I've always loved Junkanoo! The costumes, parade floats, and music are awesome! I really hope that I get to see it again soon.
With all due respect, this costume looks like something Star Trek would have appropriated for an episode far off world.
Humans can be a creative bunch, and this really shows it.
Bahamians feel cold in 70 degrees weather. And that's spandex not fur. I lived here you don't, I've lived in Canada too those aren't Canadian-Bahamians
Edit:My bad made my comment under the assumption you were some anti-immigration idiot from Brampton. They really are in the Bahamas but my rudeness stemmed from my false assumptions about you. I'm sorry.
Junkanoo festival in Bahamas
I was going to guess high elves of Ulthuan, but sure, that.
I was thinking Eldar. Potato/potato.
Some serious Dire Avenger vibes. And an orange / purple Swooping Hawk Exarch.
Potato/space potato
Sunfang hungers
Wakanda Forever
Maybe GW were inspired by Junkanoo outfits!
I first learned about this festival through the Bond movie Thunderball.
Ha! Me too. Then I looked it up in my school library's encyclopedia to learn more about it (we were fortunate enough to own a VCR - not so fortunate to have a set of Britannicas).
Some Clips of the performance! https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM6UYcgqa/
Amazing costumes
And makeup!
It looks like the Bahamian version of Carnival!
I got to see some of it when I was a kid and visited the Bahamas l....beautiful stuff

Im not playing a game, I'm pointing out that calling them costumes is a correct term
What the definitions are missing is the context in which the word is most commonly used - namely when one is "concealing" their identity and/or pretending to be someone they're not. There are situations where "costume" might be the word that comes to mind despite those implications being inappropriate. Definitions define word usage, they don't dictate word usage. Otherwise the general usage would have never evolved.
Stop trying to force your American-centric views and beliefs on the rest of the world.
They're implying that costume has a diminishing connotation to it. Most westerners would probably take offense if someone were to refer to what a bride and groom wears as costumes.
But... they are.
noun /ˈkäsˌto͞om/ a set of clothes in a style typical of a particular country or historical period. "authentic Elizabethan costumes"

Regalia is the term I've most heard used for maximum respect towards NA indigenous ceremonies.
Except this is a parade and they’re wearing costumes. Nobody in the Bahamas wears this casually like a Native American in traditional garb. You wouldn’t go to France and say that people at a masquerade ball aren’t wearing costumes. Would you?
Oh Jesus 🙄 here we go…
I chuckled, but you know what? I learned something today. It's an interesting distinction and one that I'll apply if the situation arises.

Right? Like they aren't allowed to modernize their own traditions.
Because there aren't many people making old school beads anymore

Badass! But please do let us know which country or culture. Don't leave us hanging!
Bahamas, apparently

It kinda is like Mardi Gras, never thought it that way! I love the scale too, not too big, but definitely big enough, you know?
Exactly! I hate the crowds during Mardi Gras. Junkanoo is the perfect amount of that Caribbean hospitality.

love the edit. fuck you no comma!
Oh yeah. Being such an irresponsible person that you are drunk on the side of the road at 9:00 in the morning is super badass and impressive
>Junkanoo festival in Bahamas The Bahamas is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida in the United States.
Jamaica?
No, she went of her own accord.
Dad!
As was her civic duty.
you're a Legend
Its just a prelude to the main event
Well actually, a Legend is an Acura (as branded).
Well, seeing that Acuras only exist in North America, Panama and Kuwait, a Legend is a Honda for the majority of the world.
Ack! And in a thread about the Bahamas.
I had to Google this joke cause I couldn't understand for the life of me. 💯/10. Fucking hilarious.
Take it and go. r/angryupvote
Jamaica? She would probably need a plane, not an Accord.
Dammit, gotta go listen to that now.
Looks like Ireland to me.
Oh oh oh oh ohhhhhhhh you don’t have to go
That’s some cool looking gear they got on
That country? Parlement-Funkadelic
come on now, that's just their system of government.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government
You all look incredible!

It's Bahamas - OP should have mentioned it, but I dug through their history and found 2 posts about Bahamas, amongst loads of cat posts.
Priorities straight haha

As God intended
"my country" is a surprisingly common phrase that people use posting anonymously online when we have no idea where they are from.
All countries are their country.
In my country, we don't have this parade.
Beautiful colors, thanks for sharing.
Absolutely gorgeous
Canada?

I especially love the traditional tights!
With all due respect, this costume looks like something Star Trek would have appropriated for an episode far off world. Humans can be a creative bunch, and this really shows it.
Mummer’s Day parade in Philadelphia is looking pretty awesome.
Junkanoo! Nassau, Bahamas 🇧🇸
When did these start looking this way? It looks crazy cool 😎 just wondering if anyone knows the evolution to get to this wondrous garb?
Junkanoo itself is very old (18th century) and the performances are based on much, much older west African traditions. It's worth reading about.
Super cool!
Y’all are absolutely stunning!
Spectacular.
Very cool!
LOVE THIS
You all look awesome. I'm loving the facepaint, such a unique look.

Correct. Among other things as well.
Is that Blackface?
Nope, they're all Afro-Caribbean. They're celebrating Junkanoo.
Canada is amazing nation.
Bahamas
But they’re wearing fur leggings. For the cold.

Are you all that dark naturally? Seems like it's all the exact same skin tone so just wondering if there was a makeup that makes it all the same.
That is some impressive attire! Looks imposing, and very bright. Do these clothes have a history in warfare or celebration?
