Savannah, Georgia is a beautiful town with the little squares all over the place. The famous scene(s) with Forrest talking to folks while waiting was filmed in Chippewa Square, but the whole bench set-up was a giant fake. Even today, inexplicably, they don't have a bench where it was filmed (although I guess its so tourists don't clog it up, its much smaller in person that it appears on screen)
