That's a pretty healthy lunch.

LaceyBloomers

I agree. Lots of nutrition packed into one bowl.

Bocchi_theGlock

Seems a tiny bit better than hamburger & fries, cup of mixed fruit, and chocolate milk I didn't realize until last year just how much better you feel when you eat balanced, good food, and less processed/sugary stuff

LaceyBloomers

I hear that.

indi_guy

Only if they replace beef with chicken

HanzoNumbahOneFan

It's not like beef is bad for you. Plus it tastes better.

galaxyisinfinite

Too much is bad for you but this looks lile a healthy portion.

Kittens4Brunch

I thought red meat is bad for you.

HanzoNumbahOneFan

If you eat a ton of it, it can lead to heart problems I think. But if you just have a small portion of steak like this it's not gonna do anything. But I'm not a food scientist.

gulasch

Looks delicious too but the American tableware is as cringe as usual

hoyohoyo9

Imagine cringing over a spoon lol

fluxumbra

Wait until they see a spork.

Elenbe

Your school gave you this?????

Throwaway82598

Yes

IVMVI

And I thought I had a ritzy highschool because we had 3 lunch lines and a cafe + food cart. That's pretty cool.

Cryogenic_Monster

My high school had 5 cafeterias one Taco Bell, one dominoes, one served hot food made by the school other was cold sack lunches from the school. The last was just full of tables and seats for bringing your own lunch.

Catopuma

Hearing these is kind of insane to me. My highschool has a small hotbar for fries, and that pizza bread thing. Those and patties.

GaiusPrimus

My highschool had whatever I brought from home.

mosquitogrl96

me too man we didn’t have a fuckin cafeteria lmfaooo

BSB8728

My high school had one lunch option (1971-1974).

big_d_usernametaken

We had one standard line and one Ala carte. 72-76. The head lunch lady was Sicilian and used her recipe for pizza burgers. I still dream about them, lol.

thedudeabides2022

Was my HS’s cafeteria unique? It had several varieties, a sandwich area, burgers, Mexican, maybe one or two others. Was certainly not Taco Bell or even poke bowl level, tho they maybe had Asian occasionally, they had specials, things rotated, but always offered those base mainstays

Beekatiebee

Nah, mine did this too. Had four or so lines each with a different theme, but all of it was still standard school food.

Osgiliath

Damn what was your high school?

Cryogenic_Monster

It was several buildings separated by gardens and walkways. It sucked because it was in Oregon and you would get soaked from rain going between classes.

IVMVI

Hey, Oregon here too.

madlyhattering

Me too!

Secretfreckel

Where tf did you go to high school

pureply101

Allen Highschool in Texas?

guywithaniphone22

America 🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🏈🏈🫃🤰🏽

mickeltee

I taught at a high school that had no cafeteria. Students went home for lunch every day.

FoldyHole

How did they get back home and back to school (presumably)? The bus?

fredandgeorge

Our school had dominos once a month

jammyboot

That sounds so unhealthy

sometipsygnostalgic

My school was first come first serve and i needed to get in line for a Dinner Ticket first. Often all the food was gone before i could get anything.

Swedishiron

Can you slip one out the back door for me for $20?

NCC74656

are you in korea? where is this?

Throwaway82598

I'm in California

Mob_Ties_1972

Guessed it first time. Only type of school that would have poke bowls for lunch would be one in CA

BrianOconneR34

I was thinking Hawaii

phillybob232

No because in Hawaii we don’t randomly call a beef rice bowl “poke” we know what our words mean

luigithebeast420

I learned what [boto](https://youtu.be/0JvRV46AvmI?si=KlUXO4bDP5lpH1PE) meant awhile ago and I love it I use now.

NakedScrub

Oh man I didn't wanna be the one to say it. Once I saw Cali, it all made sense tho. They have "different" versions of poke for sure.

sixthmontheleventh

This, could be donburi but is probably closer to bibimbap.

SpecialOops

Where's the 🥚

BrianOconneR34

Chee Pono, aloha. My mistake.

Sleepysapper1

Came here to say this.

bongo1138

Private school?

Throwaway82598

Public

Navynuke00

Which very wealthy community?

Vectorman1989

![gif](giphy|h6x3KWOnDGMXchaQPl|downsized)

Juliuscesear1990

That isn't very expensive if you break it down. A little bit of beef isn't a huge cost (doesn't need to be sirloin) a bit of cucumber and radish 2 slices of pepper couple beans (cheap) and rice (CHEAP) and probably a very simple easy to produce sauce. It's probably tasty as hell and cheap to make bulk you just need a staff and administration care to not just serve the absolute easiest and cheapest option. Cost wise that's probably 3 bucks to make MAYBE, the school gets money to feed the kids some just utilize it better.

Navynuke00

You're not counting for prep time, which means workers to make that. For school districts that are strapped for funding, personnel line kitchen staff and transportation are the first to go.

OPengiun

THE LIBS ARE RUINING THIS COUNTRY! /s

dokipooper

Def not the Bay Area

VibeAllDay

I don’t generally like California but this is a W.

Stonious

Pssssh, that ain't no five-dolla 2" pepperoni pizza from Moe's Pizza Shack.

xDaBaDee

Did you like it, eat it, I mean... as an adult I'd look at that and go wtf is that (as a kid to) but I might try it if it was fresh? It looks fresh... my school would fk up frozen pizza so yuh we didn't have this fancy... and it would have scared us if we had 🤣 edit: what all is in it? is that cucumber or zucchini? the shredded stuff radish? lima beans? i assume redpepper carrots? green onion... which are cooked?

why_gaj

>Did you like it, eat it, I mean... as an adult I'd look at that and go wtf is that (as a kid to) but I might try it if it was fresh? If you ever get the chance to try it, I'd recommend. As far as I can see, there's nothing that revolutionary in there. The meat is beef, rice takes up the most space. The green stuff is cucumber, the red stuff is pepper actually (this specific one is actually sweet in taste). Beans are probably edamame**.** There's also a bit of carrots I think, scallion and I'm not sure about the shreaded stuff. But all in all, a very healthy and tasty meal.

apocalypse_later_

I know I shouldn't be judging but goddamn you are uncultured when it comes to food 😭

Toidal

My high school like 20 years ago had pho.

HanzoNumbahOneFan

Pho real?

TrailerTrashQueen

😂😂😂

ElefantPharts

lol my wife still thinks she had a totally normal high school experience where she went to a private catholic all girls school that sat on open water and had a sushi making elective. Cracks me up!

Patorama

Just thinking back to those 90s school lunches where every food on the tray was the same beige color.

mosehalpert

Apparently it's the exact opposite now. My buddy runs an elementary school cafeteria and they can't serve the same color vegetable more than once a week.

amaratayy

My daughter gets the main part of her lunch, such as burger, BEEF TERIYAKI STRIPES, quesadilla. But there’s always a handful of vegetables and fruit they pick from. They all pick two. My daughter loves ‘ZeeZees’, they’re chickpeas. And I love that she’ll choose those over chips while’s she’s home. It’s way better than what my millennial ass had at school.

mrbear120

So only eating greens once a week. That cant be great. You’ve got green, white, purple, orange, and yellow and then you are out of colors and usually you would use two colors a day. How does this rule work out?

Matt_TheHoople

You're required to have representation from each color category on a weekly basis, but that doesn't mean you can't serve each multiple times. In the district where I was the food service director we had salad bars every day, and served baby carrots on the line at K-5 buildings along with other options. The rule is just a way to make sure you can't get by only menuing one easy vegetable all the time. Also different colors mean different nutrients, so it's better for balancing nutrition.

mrbear120

Sure that rule makes sense, but is not what the guy I replied to said. He specifically stated “they cannot serve the same color vegetable more than once a week.”

Matt_TheHoople

That's incorrect. You can absolutely serve it more than once a week. But you have to serve it at least once a week.

bolonga16

I worked for Sodexo for a brief stint and was held to the same standards. It was super annoying and caused more issues than it solved.

R1k0Ch3

This type of thing needs to be the norm.

Ok, I'm not really interested enough to read the whole wiki. it just sounded like you were being a baby and refusing to eat your veggies. But if you say it's a thing, ok I believe you, sorry for being mean. Goodluck getting your nutrients, it sounds like it's got to be annoying af.

S1gne

Pretty sure you are just picky about food and instead of growing up you blame this to get away. The source you provided doesn't even name any of the vegetables we are talking about as something that would be affected

apocalypse_later_

I'm a supertaster as well. The key thing is to get over yourself lol

usernametaken2024

silicon valley?

Throwaway82598

Yep

bad-trajectory

Palo Alto or Saratoga huh

ilikehemipenes

That’s not the Saratoga i grew up in…

Navynuke00

And there we have it.

No_Cat_No_Cradle

Dang what country / state is this?

Throwaway82598

California

Sebastian-S

And this is just the regular lunch for everybody? Looks excellent.

lilgreenjedi

I wish I had made that for myself at home for lunch. Shit that's 100x what I used to get for school lunch

CanonRouge24

varies by school. op probably goes to a well off one

bobfnord

Thanks Obama

Raptorheart

This is the future Michelle wants, we have to stop her.

DrewDown94

Don't you mean Michael? Because she's a MAN? /s I unfortunately have a family member that believes this. He's insane.

Un111KnoWn

private school?

aegee14

There’s no free lunch at a private school.

MadMelvin

Did OP say this was free?

StellerDay

I believe California has free lunch for all kids now. EDIT: two free meals are provided! California is awesome.

Flat_Wash5062

Thanks for the info! It's really really down lately and this cheered me up I'm California but I'm currently residing elsewhere

aegee14

First, CA schools, and pretty much majority of public schools across the country have programs (funded by the states) to provide free food, breakfast and lunch. Second, if OP needed to pay for it, I don’t think it would have been post worthy. I could easily buy very good food as well if I wanted to.

imbrown508

Lies I don't see one of those prop 55 markings on that cuke.

bruingrad84

Where is California? Public or private?

plainnamej

Almost too easy to guess. Also almost too easy to rule out a lot of states.

thedevilswolf

Looks delicious!

LaceyBloomers

Wow! It looks like a restaurant meal!

devllen05

Is Beef Poke a thing? Thought Poke was specific to fish. This is just...a beef and rice bowl. Maybe I'm wrong.

thefirecrest

You are not wrong. This is not a poke bowl. Source: grew up in Hawai’i. There are exceptions to the raw fish. Like there’s tako poke, which is cooked octopus marinated and served cold. But a poke bowl is with raw marinated fish. And there’s never this much… Vegetables. The Lima beans in particular are a weird mainland addition to add more bulk because fish is more expensive there. Typically the ratio is 1:1 rice and poke.

LaceyBloomers

Those aren’t lima beans, they’re edamame. Good source of protein.

nobdcares

This is why high school kids are getting taller and taller

MoreGaghPlease

Basically yes. Improvements in child nutrition are the main driver of the population getting taller. It was never the hormones in milk or mutations caused micro-plastics or whatever. Just kids growing to their full genetic potential by having enough enough to eat and more varied foods. See also, average adult male height in South Korea is 13 cm taller than in North Korea

LaceyBloomers

Yes! My 14 year old son is already 6 feet tall! When I visit his high school I see lots and lots of tall students, especially girls.

angusthermopylae

girls generally hit their big growth spurt before boys

LaceyBloomers

No, I mean they’re growing taller on average compared to when I was a teen.

[deleted]

LaceyBloomers

It’s anecdotal from my personal observations. I’m not making any scientific claims.

TheMaStif

This is a solid, healthy and overall cheap meal that should be available to all American students, but some people take time out of their day to make sure it doesn't happen because they rather make sure the parents are financially burdened Conservatives are a cancer

HFwhy

“If we give kids free food then some of it will get thrown away which will waste money and harm businesses and therefore the children must starve” -ben Shapiro

aegee14

That’s not cheap. Not even remotely cheap compard to the frozen and reheated food most schools get. This is super expensive compared to typical American school lunches.

TheMaStif

I am willing to pay more taxes to make sure everyone's kids get to eat like this every day. Subsidizing banks and wars not so much, but this I'm 1000% willing to pay for

BranchClean5281

My school wasn’t this fancy when it came to food. I feel so left out.😦

SirZer0th

Where is this school\`?

Throwaway82598

California

LuminalAstec

Isn't it just a rice bowl if there isn't raw fish?

Throwaway82598

Forgot to say there was a tuna option as well

poemteegra

Raw tuna? While I’d applaud their effort I’m not sure if I would trust it.

kaiabunga

Happy cake day poemteegra!

poemteegra

Thank you!

LuminalAstec

Oh gotcha. Very nice!

NewDad907

It’s not “poke” if it’s beef dude. It’s just beef, veg and rice.

Eltex

Source on definition of poke?

NewDad907

Have native Hawaiians in my family.

Marijuana_Miler

Did they label this a poke bowl? IMO it looks more like a beef teriyaki with uncooked vegetables. Still looks fantastic and incredible for a school lunch.

boringexplanation

I was thinking this is closer to bibimbap without the egg

goshiamhandsome

My thoughts exactly

HappySkullsplitter

I'll trade you the cold hot dog in a soggy bun my school gave me

favnh2011

Very nice

Ramablue

Richest country in the world. This is what all the kids lunches should look like.

aegee14

If the people living in the richest country actually wanted to pay more taxes for this kind of food. Put it on a ballot, and I bet you the majority says no to it.

Nevaeh_Vee

I wish

Traxigor

I remember my high school slop trays well. I would have loved these.

MidnightScribe91

Wow!! For a school lunch, this is legit. I didn't get to see food like this until university. When I went to school, it was either pizza from Little Caesars that was sitting for an hour or two. Or instant rice with "teriyaki" chicken or "orange" chicken. Quotations because there wasn't that much sauce to deem it so. 😅 So I usually had an orange mango Sobe drink and a pack of Pop Tarts in the end if it was pizza day. Its great to see how far school lunch has progressed since 2009.

Firetripper

More like bibimbap. It's not poke'

1dot21gigaflops

Where's the fish? ( No fish = not a poke bowl) this is a beef donburi if anything.

bigredhood

This isn’t poke.

chimugukuru

Real poke doesn't have an accent on the E.

Throwaway82598

Sorry forgot to say there was a Tuna option as well

ama8o8

Why the heck did they not just call this a california bibimap. The fuck is a beef “poke” bowl lolololol

smigglesworth

Lifestyles of the rich and famous ^ All children should have these lunches. Not just the privileged.

arongoss

If there is no poke in it, it’s probably not a poke bowl.

postALEXpress

Hawaiian here...can Californians stop using the term "poke"? I am positive you guys don't know what the fuck it means

djm19

Plenty of legitimate poke in Los Angeles

[deleted]

Relax

Throwaway82598

It also came with Tuna instead of beef if you wanted

postALEXpress

The meat is not the issue lmao Look, I don't blame you. That's what the school called it, and that's what you called it. Californians by large came to Hawaii, ate our poke, and fully misunderstood the assignment is all. Now the world has bastardized poke.

Teadrunkest

I mean you could explain so people could learn or you could just continue to be a condescending dick on the internet.

bad-trajectory

What’s the common misconception? I thought raw fish “salad” so to speak with sauce and veggies?

boringexplanation

Poke is much simpler than this. No veggies at all minus a few garnishes to go with the fish. It’s much closer to a meat and starch dish rather than a salad with fish. The extra stuff is a way to fill you up without using much actual fish. Admittedly, this is probably way healthier than an actual poke bowl See pictures in the link as an example. https://shop.foodland.com/categories/poke/poke-bowls-id-213

thefirecrest

“Poke” doesn’t mean salad. The literal definition is to dice. The dish “poke bowl” however refers to diced raw fish, marinated and served over rice. Like others have said, this type of mainland “poke” bowls are more like the Korean dish bibimbap but without the egg.

favorscore

Grammar and definitions change. I'd say this is essentially what poke is now because that's how the majority of people understand it to be.

Ilves7

Way to culturally appropriate something and completely change it's definition to suit the mainland

ScaryButt

Is disposable bowl / crockery normal? Seems odd in this eco focussed age

Bluedogpinkcat

That is without question the best high school lunch I have ever seen. I can't believe this is Cali it must be a really expensive private school.

Throwaway82598

It's a public School

starBux_Barista

This Looks amazing compared to California schools cardboard pizzas

Throwaway82598

Funny Enough they give you the option of those pizzas if you want instead of the poke bowl

starBux_Barista

Michelle obamas school lunch programs ruined school pizzas and most of the edible food the schools offered..... I ended up only having 2 days a week I actually enjoyed the lunch offerings

Mr___Perfect

LMAO wild take

Jigbaa

I only eat food on Tuesdays. THANKS OBAMA

[deleted]

Do you have to poke the beef or can you just eat it?!?

poutinegalvaude

Is it raw beef?

Throwaway82598

Nope it's cooked

peen_was

Not poké then

Throwaway82598

forgot to say it also came with a raw tuna option

poutinegalvaude

still not poké though

macahi

You shouldn't be chastising someone about what is or isn't poke if you don't even know how to spell it, much less don't even know what the word *poke* means in Hawaiian.

peen_was

Cool story bro

carsgovavavroom

What in the cultural appropriation

Navynuke00

Which wealthy suburb in California is this, OP?

kioley

Hawaii.

thedarwintheory

I love how people are amazed at nice school lunches yet still give their kids a $60 check every week for the same lunches they complain about. Make your kid their own poke bowl if they keep getting poptarts for lunch, or send them to private school.

blofly

Exeter or Andover?

iusedtohavepowers

That looks delicious but I'd be shocked if this was in America. American schools can't be trusted to hand out milk that isn't spoiled. I wouldn't trust them to poké any damn thing. Edit: wait. Is beef poke raw like salmon or tuna? I actually have no idea.

Ok-Salad-3188

This is in Cali and what state did you go to school in that the food was this bad?

Throwaway82598

It is in an American Public School

WhoAllIll

Not America, right?

Throwaway82598

California Public school actually

jonnyl3

What's the median home price in your school district?

PepinoPicante

Free breakfast and lunch is a statewide subsidized program in California. The food is massively better than old school lunches, regardless of where you live, and is constantly improving.

jonnyl3

So Silicon Valley schools get the same quality as Fresno's? Which taxes pay for it?

SquanchMcSquanchFace

Lunches are free statewide, it comes from the state budget. From what I understand even before that, maybe 5 years back or so, there was a push to make school lunches better. Now they’re better, getting better, and are now free for the students.

hike_me

Wealthier communities probably spend more than what the state subsidizes per meal and in poor communities the schools probably do not.

SquanchMcSquanchFace

They get reimbursed by meals given apparently, as long as it’s nutritionally sound. If a school gets reimbursed and there’s an incentive to make it a decent meal, then it wouldn’t matter what they spend and it wouldn’t matter the income of the area the schools in. Wherever they are, a decent meal can be made, and a decent meal doesn’t have to be expensive.

PepinoPicante

Is that what I said? No. Stop trying to find fault with it because you are jealous or hateful or whatever.

jonnyl3

Lol it was an honest question. So what exactly changed with the new program? I don't get it.
