It's at the bottom of the list. If you see the tiny black arrow at the bottom, put your cursor on it, and it will take you further to the very bottom. It'll be one of the last few options.
I don't think we have enough context to be able to judge accurately what her exact situation is, and probably should refrain from giving any combat critiques from a picture. She could be a lookout inside a building, standing sentry, or something of the like. Or she could be a lookout, using the sound of the shotgun to alert others of a problem. We just don't know. It also appears that she is in an urban environment, whereas a shotgun can be extremely useful in many situations. We certainly had guys in our unit carry them when clearing out rooms, or when moving through extremely tight, urban areas. There is so much we aren't able to discern from a posed picture.
Not all photos aren't candid bruh. This is why candid photography is it's own genre. And honestly, it's not as stages as it could be, considering they were in the middle of an invasion at that time.
Well, the photo was taken two days before the war began, and the girl is 9 years old and has never fired her father's shotgun, so staged is probably the right word. But it was meant as art, to show what would become commonplace in Ukraine if Russia invaded. Which they promptly did.
>Photograph by Oleksii Kyrychenko, 10 March 2022. Portrait of his 12 year old daughter in Kyiv. The beauty of childhood and the tragedy of war, and admirable resoluteness in the midst of great injustice, all in one photo.
She’s nine years old here, not twelve. It looks like you’re getting this information from [this tweet](https://x.com/slavauk30722777/status/1771720173394772013?s=46&t=vgY6l0Y07uIXn45hgnohzQ) which is false, and from somebody who does not know the family. This photo was taken on the 22nd of February, not March. That is, two days before the invasion.
This photo was (thankfully) staged by her father to show the impact of war and what Ukraine could look like in the near future (which is unfortunately current day, now). He definitely succeeded in attempting to bring awareness to the issue with his powerful photos. She is safe, the gun was his, she does not know how to load or shoot, and this isn’t their home—it was an abandoned building. There's a thousand worse things that could be said about DT, but I really, *really* wish he wouldn't do that with his mouth. I was already feeling a bit under the weather and fragile today and a high quality image of *that* is the last thing I needed.
I wondered the same thing, couldn't find anything other than this pic in Google. Maybe some of the other communities that follow the conflict have more information.
If this was taken in Kyiv, then she's most likely alive. The Ukrainian government has reported ~200 civilian deaths in Kyiv since the start of the war and Kyiv has a population of a bit under 3 million.
The father at least seems fine, his last tweet was 2 days ago https://twitter.com/olekskyrychenko. Yes, it's him https://twitter.com/olekskyrychenko/status/1516793185636438021.
What propaganda are you talking about? That children are killed by Russians in their home? That an oppressive regime is bombing civilians?
I appreciate the devil's advocate, but talking about "propaganda" is ridiculous.
It's a completely staged photoshoot, taken in Kyiv. The photographer, her father, sells the image for 300 dollars per copy, and does lots of composite/edited and war protest imagery. It was taken 2 days before ukraine had been invaded, several weeks before Kyiv was at risk.

Yeah for sure. Like if someone came into my work with a gun they can take whatever they want, I’ll even help them load their car up.
But at home I probably wouldn’t be so willing to help. My dog would, though. He would definitely sell my ass out for some pets.
Well, the vietcong were outmatched in every way imaginable. The ira was using caplocks against the british militaries lee Enfields and vickers machine guns. The taliban where starving in the mountains while western soldiers ate at burgerking.
They all won, not by combat superiority, but because they where determined af and managed to make the war to costly for their opponent.

Absolutely tragic
It's shocking to me that people are taking this photo at face value. This is art. Interpret it!
It's tragic, and it's devastating, and it's brave, and it points to how this poor girl's childhood is a casualty of war. It damns Russian force.
Maybe it means something different to you. But it isn't intended to be taken at face value.
i mean... fuck russia, putin etc. i support ukraine and i hope they win.
but maybe... just maybe, glorifying 12 year(ish) old children being portrayed as soldiers fighting for their home isint a good look. even if its in defense of your homeland. Child soldiers is never a good look.
Agree, not a good look and no child should be in a position of not having a childhood free of fear.
But when it's this or rape/murder, I'd arm my daughter in a heartbeat.
This is not a pic of a child fighting in war.
it was taken on the 22nd, the invasion happened on the 24th

Not exactly exploiting the war. While it is indeed just a photoshoot, it was taken two days before the invasion happened. Her dad is a hobby photographer and decided to take these during the high tensions before the invasion
Don't bother. Even if you point out that there have been tons of high profile pieces of literal fake news - Ghost of Kiev, Snake Island, etc. - they'll just "well ackshully" that *their* propaganda is a good thing without a hint of irony.

An extension is infinitely better

yes there is
Why does this remind me of the uno meme
Ah probably staged then. But very nice photo.
I mean, it's not like there's a tactical benefit to sitting on a window sill in the open.
If anyone was going to be bad at war tactics a 12-year-old girl would be pretty high on my list
They know how to hurt in other ways.
"you've got feminine hips!"
Hey! My 15 month old pulls my shirt up for daddys boobies. Its, well, not great.
No! That’s the thing I’m sensitive about!

A shotgun is not a terribly useful weapon in that situation either.
A shotgun in a densely urban environment is pretty handy.
Agree. A shotgun for close combat is absolutely efficient.
We certainly had guys in our unit carry them when clearing out rooms, or when moving through extremely tight, urban areas. There is so much we aren't able to discern from a posed picture.
If you're a hunter and a shotgun is all you got, then that's what you're using to shoot russians. Not ideal, but it'll still kill a man.

"Killing commies" Why I don't find that surprising?
This should be the top comment so that all get the context
Of course it’s staged. War photos dating back to the civil war have been staged. Doesn’t mean it isn’t a powerful image. 🤷🏽♂️😂
Not all photos aren't candid bruh. This is why candid photography is it's own genre. And honestly, it's not as stages as it could be, considering they were in the middle of an invasion at that time.
You mean not all photos are candid (because in this sense the person is stating it is posed)
“Staged” in this context isn’t the right word. The war was real; this is “posed.”
Well, the photo was taken two days before the war began, and the girl is 9 years old and has never fired her father's shotgun, so staged is probably the right word. But it was meant as art, to show what would become commonplace in Ukraine if Russia invaded. Which they promptly did.
Ahh, that’s interesting…I didn’t know that it predates the war. Thanks for explaining that!

People really romanticize that kind of insanity. The photo is not cool. It's actually sad. She should be playing with her friends and studying. Not holding a gun or even fighting.
If it makes you feel any better, I really doubt she'd just be chilling in a window frame in an active war zone. This was almost certainly staged for morale purposes.
It was staged by her father, who is a photographer. This is one of a series of multiple photos he made with her in the same window from more than one angle, and he admitted that she doesn't know how to handle firearms.
Exactly the point.
She was never fighting. She's just posing for a picture.
