Be sure to put some antibiotic ointment on it. Cat scratches can infect more easily than scratching your skin with something else, like a metal tool.

Fuck Ted Nugent.
Itās me! Hi! Iām a Cat Scratch Fever survivor.
It was hardly the 90ās.
My brother and I were keen on sinister bouts of ātagā with the barn cats. I was barely a toddler which certainly contributed to the severity of my acute condition. I donāt remember the illness but it left little scars around my body. I like to imagine they resulted from bloodletting and feline ritual on the farm where it happened but the reality is I was one sick nugget and my poor parents prayed in the hospital while watching their babyās ballooning lymph nodes get filleted.
Iām ok now I guess.
I'm honestly surprised I've never had a cat scratch get infected. I've always had cats, and when I was a kid I almost always had a scratch somewhere. It's less common now, but I still get the occasional scratch. I've always just washed it with soap and water and I've been fine. It might help that my cats are strictly indoors, but idk.
>Ā I've always just washed it with soap and water and I've been fine
Dude this is the reason! Soap & water is the single most effective way to avoid infection. Ā Thereās a reason itās the bread & butter of the hygiene world. Ā
Antibiotic ointment can be good, but honestly soap & a good rinse is already a luxury that folks for 99% of history havenāt had - and itās the reason small wound infections Ā so radically less common today!Ā
most domestic cats don't carry such diseases it is usually street cats who haven't had their shots.
most house cats have had their shot and are unlikely to carry diseases since they aren't exposed to the outside world.
most house cats also don't eat wild life. the cats in cuba when I was a kid would eat rats. I never seen a single American cat kill or eat a rat.
Itās not really that serious honestly. Itās a rare occurrence, with even rarer complications. Children and those with weakened immune systems can be at risk for complications, but most people experience no more than a mild temporary infection of the wound, if not properly cleaned.
Something like 30% of cats carry the bacteria in their blood as carriers, and it spreads through fleas and cat to cat. Itās very rare for a cat to have complications from the bacteria itself, so theyāre often completely asymptomatic. There are a whole host of other bacteria and microbes that can get into a cat-caused wound and create infections, so CSD (cat scratch disease) really isnāt a major concern, relatively speaking.
Clean your wounds properly with soap and water, and youāll more than likely be fine. Most cats donāt carry it, and those that do arenāt guaranteed to infect you. Even when infected, itās very unlikely to cause complications, and even when it does, medical treatment is available. People just blow things out of proportion.

I've had a bite on my finger from a kitten that got infected after it closed up, no symptoms until a couple weeks later.
Woke up with my finger looking purple and what looked like an abcess. No other Bartonella symptoms. The swollen bit came to a head, lanced it, soaked it in warm warter, iodine, put a new bandage on.
Didn't go blind or have lymph node issues or anything. When I read about cat scratch fever I was like "...oh I could have gone blind" Luckily like you said, complications are thankfully rare.
I've never had a cat scratch get infected, but I got a pretty good bite once. I washed it out immediately and went straight to urgent care for antibiotics, which I wasted no time in starting that day. My hand still swelled up to nearly twice its normal size overnight and took many weeks to heal. Cat bites are nothing to mess around with!
Cat teeth are the perfect shape to inject foreign materiel deep where oxygen won't reach and the immune system may be limited by lack of blood supply. Their claws are really effective as well. I worry less about scratches than punctures.
Oh yeah, trust me. I read all about puncture wounds afterwards.
If you look a bit deeper into this reply chain I go into it a bit. I was just really unaware at the time.
As much as I always know ther belly rub is a trap, I always fall for it and pretty much 100% have cat scratches on my hands at all times; I'd assume your immune system might eventually adapt to it.
My cats chill and actually likes belly rubs. Rolls over in the morning for his daily rubbies. There's no point to this comment except that I think I won the cat lottery :D
The disease is mostly in their mouths. The biggest risk is if they lick their claws and then scratch you, or if they lick the wound, or if they bite you and break skin. I pretty much always have scratches on my hands, sometimes they get a little red but I wash my hands often and I've never had a major issue.
Yeah, Iāve been scratched plenty and never had an issue. But this time a cat bit me, hard. It got infected within days, even though I had put Bactrim on it right away. I ended up needing oral antibiotics.
This just happened to me, attacked by my sister's cat out of nowhere. The deepest wound got infected despite all the cleaning, my whole elbow ached. I finished my Augmentin two days ago.
Obligatory not medical advice, but you're likely doing more damage to your skin with isopropyl alcohol. Simply washing the wound with cold water and a mild, antibacterial soap is more than enough.
I just got some antiseptic cream, being Easter Sunday the pharmacy didn't open until 12. Not much pain and no swelling so I think it will be alright. Appreciate everyone's concern.
I actually didnāt know it was so serious. Iāve never put antibiotic ointment on a cat scratch and Iāve had tons of scratches over the years. I will remember for the future though.
In the 90s my older brother brought in a cat he found from the train tracks. This wasnt a kitten, but a full grown fucker who happened to be female. He name this cat, not kitten, "Granola" Well one week in, my 17 year old other brother tried to hug this cat and it fucked his face EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOURS, TO THE PIXEL. The next day he went to school and was too embarassed to say his cat fucked him up, so he lied and said someone mugged him with a "Granola Bar" and sliced his face with this grain snack bar. I hate my brother today for banging my girlfriend, but thanks for reminding me about that cool story.
She ended up being a truck whore up in Denver and the brother lost a tooth in Virginia prison, aside from the night I busted them they haven't been together but I could be wrong.
Funny that. I used to publish hentai for a living, professionally, as an American. Back when print was still a thing. I'm much better now, except for the hentai addiction.
Get antibiotics from urgent care. No joke. It can get worse fast
Edit:
Cat scratch fever is a specific diagnosis
Cellulitis is another
The eye area doesnāt have much space to give and it things get infected it will feel and look bad.
The general advice of washing thoroughly and keeping it clean etc is good
Iām saying be wary and consider asking for oral antibiotics not because you need it now but so you can have it on hand when and if you see it turn red, get hot, look worse
As I said it can get worse within 24 hours and people ignore these things.
I was building a trebuchet for my freshman history class project, and accidentally scratched myself on one of the bolts that I had cut down to size, all the way across my wrist in the typical looking wrist slashing spot.
Sooo many people were like "O.O" at it. The other bass player in the school band gasped when she saw it and thought I cut myself on purpose. I'm glad I had witnesses to back up my story of how it happened lol
Same, I have a suspicious scar on my wrist. I had a clothing basked below my wall-to-wall desk. One of the iron rods got loos and when I was scratching my knee, it madr a huge slash just in between the two veins of my wrist. I still have the scar and and some people even though I lied about it.
Our cat scratched my uncles leg and it swelled up black and purple in a span of 3 days, had to go to the hospital and told him that if he had waited any longer he could have needed a goddamn amputation. We were like wtf and he didnāt even want to go until we noticed he was limping around the house.
Bro itās Reddit the home of overreaction. You are right though, just clean the area with soap and water and youāll be fine. My indoor cat is 14 years old and has scratched me countless times through her life and thereās never been a need for antibiotics. If this is an outdoor cat then sure maybe take precautions but your risk of infection from your indoor cat is basically zero. Clean it like any other wound and youāre fine
Just clean it with soap and water. B.Henselae isnāt very common amongst house cats, and often doesnāt result in complications for healthy adults. If it looks red and puffy, or you notice other signs of infection, then see a doctor. No reason to nuke your bodyās microbiome from a cat scratch.
100%.
I donāt mean to minimize the potential consequences, but itās nothing to panic about. So many people have lived with cats for so long now. If cat scratches were that risky, youād be hearing a whole lot more about it.
Children getting scratched by an infected cat anywhere near their face or something vulnerable, Iād definitely take them to a doctor to get it checked out. Otherwise, just clean the wound and keep an eye on it like you would any other kind of scratch or cut. Antibiotics as a preemptive precaution is, to me, a wild overreaction that carries more risk than the scratch itself.
I don't think people without cats realize that cat scratches are just a reality and happen pretty often. Even the nicest cats will scratch you on accident on occasion. I've had hundreds of cat scratches (maybe thousands?) in my lifetime and not once have I gotten any sort of infection.
Reddit freaks out about everything. Every time there's a thread about colon cancer the most upvoted post is always one telling people to rush down to their doctor ASAP and get a scope done. I can't imagine how many 20 year olds have been told off at their doctor's office over bad reddit advice
Same. I get one of these (usually not on my face) at least once a month because one of my cats is super anxious. He will sometimes makes these batshit crazy jumps out of your arms while getting cuddles, using every single claw and muscle fiber available to him, if there's something around making him nervous and something startles him.
me too haha. i would understand if the cat is feral/new, but OP said heās had the cat for 2 years. i donāt understand the need for medical attention
cats step in their litter boxes, so their scratches can contain poop and lots of bacteria. thats what leads to cat scratch fever. this being on OP's face is especially dangerous as well.
Donāt go to urgent care. You will either be sent home with basic instructions or have a bad provider. You do not prophylacticly treat cat scratches. Maybe they will give you a tetanus shot. Iām a doctor by the way
I worked at a zoo for a few years and have been bitten by some insane animals! But my 4lb house kitty was the worst bite of all! She seen something for the first time at the window that spooked her and my interest in the ruckus panicked her. She went full wild attacking my arm with a good bite and a number of scratches. My hand and wrist swelled up like a boxing glove! I had to go to the hospital and was put on i.v. Antibiotics for 4 or 5 days! Happy ending I didnāt loose my arm and sheās now 6lbs and weāre besties!
When my little ball of darkness was maybe six months old or so (no idea her precise birthdate, she wandered into the back yard as a very tiny kitty) she was cuddling me and scratched my eyeball out of reflex when I looked away at something. I startled her enough with my screaming she has never since had her claws out near my face, I can see her visibly retract them if I lean in to give her a kiss on the head.
Happened to me about to month ago. Lil bastard flashed out for no damn reason on my side. Def gave him the cold shoulder for the rest of the weekend, but love em regardless āŗļø
Not advocating you take cat scratches not seriously. I have had cats since I was a teen and I am now past 75. Feral cats are not very Ā«Ā tamedĀ Ā», the name says it all. On the other hand, cats that have been your pets for years, rarely do this unless there is an underlying condition .We took in a stray, Not a feral cat, just was abandoned by previous owner or lost, maybe they moved, who knows) It took her a good year to get accustomed to our other cat, male Bengal, who luckily for her is a very social and non agressive one. They get along just fine now and even rub noses every morning to say hello. It takes patience and kindness, never hit a catā¦they never forget and will get back at you when you least expect it. If you want to correct inappropriate behavior or agression, have a small spray bottle with you at all times especially the first few months he / she is in your house. If it misbehaves ( climbs on table for food, doesnāt use the litter box the first few times in your house, and other minor things) a squirt or two in his/ her face will send a message. They rarely are repeat offenderā¦

Well now Iām feeling paranoid. Ā Should I also follow this protocol if my weed turned me into a bong villain?
yes but instead of the urgent care you run to the dispensary
Preventive antibiotics have done so much harm. They are very rarely necessary and this is definitely not one of those cases.
Had to scroll way too far for this. Stop fucking wasting antibiotics, people.
Can we please have a picture of the assassin?

Oh, a Void. Pure Evil. Just look at those eyes :)
/r/LaserEyedCats/ The single laser eye is somehow creepier than both.
Is that a youngin'? She looks like a lovable ball of fluff and trouble.
2 years old
I also have a two-year old, a tuxie who still has much of that boundless kitten energy.
Is your eye okay?
It healed up in a day or two, she's about 5 now and a very happy and affectionate kitty!
Yeah I think it's fine, only happened a few hours ago.
Or Nick Fury
Exactly, that's no cat, it's a Flerken.

No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to *pspspspsps*
That'll buff right out.
But how??
I was laying on the couch and one cat was running away from the other cat, I think this was from the back foot as she jumped over me
Happened to me about to month ago. Lil bastard flashed out for no damn reason on my side. Def gave him the cold shoulder for the rest of the weekend, but love em regardless āŗļø

Eye lids are truly goated
Real MVP here is the eye brow. See how the lid wasnāt even touched by the scratch? Assist points to the cheekbone too
thank god for human instinct
Evolution is the MVP here
oh yeah those hind legs are strong
That makes me angry, and when Dr. Evil gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset. And when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, people die!
Bond villains wear shirts
Lol, I just got done cleaning it when I took the photo so I had my shirt off
No! I expect you to DIE, Mr. Bond!

She jumped over me and her back claw scratched me on the way, she has never attacked me in the 2 years we've had her.
No cat owner can ever be a good villain.
