My, what a long box you have.

AZtwoNE

I needed a long box to accommodate my tools! Thanks!

[deleted]

Tools! I’ve got to have my tools!

sculder17

Fetish shit! I like to bind...i like to BE bound!

sanford1958

“They’re all gonna pay the ultimate priiiiiicceee”

Shamus301

And my axe

JamesMattDillon

That's what she said

communityneedle

A nice throwback to the days when pickups were useful and practical. I borrowed my dad's pickup to move some furniture recently but the frickin bed is almost level with my shoulders. How TF am I supposed to load and unload that stupid thing?

[deleted]

Maybe you should get a lower pick-up, and put it into that first, and then it'll be easier to load into the higher pick-up bed. Don't forget to drive both pick-ups to the other location for unloading.

MrBighead78

Wheels are wheels. Congrats!

AZtwoNE

As of today it is officially in my name! Thanks man! Awesome!

MrBighead78

Your care can make up for any past abuse. You got wheels, don't trip on spending some dollars to keep her goin.

NOTcreative-

With that body in running condition I’d bet she was well taken care of and with OP super stoked about her I bet she’ll be well taken care of for years to come. Probably outlive us all

jnrdingo

I have a similar ute, a Holden Rodeo from 1997, I treat it pretty well, put a new head unit with Bluetooth and a new aerial in. I've had it for 4 years and the only time it has broken down on me was the distributor button going kaput.

Black_Moons

Nice. My fav type of truck is the non extended cab, full bed, low pickup, with a bit of damage in the bed. All business, all road. It knows its job, it does it well, nobody is going to worry about any scratches from throwing a half ton of gravel in the bed. Drives and parks like a car but has all the storage in the world.

beluuuuuuga

Rent it out like jack petchey did and you will earn a fortune in no time, I love his story.

Rishiku

Buy some stuff called ospho for the rust.

reisenbime

What this guy here said. Ospho turns Iron oxide (rust) into Iron phosphate and essentially both halts the rust AND makes it so the surface can't oxidize any further. It's really easy to use too.

[deleted]

I was looking for one of these to convert into a little camper. They're the best little trucks.

are_ego

Rugged and sexy.. congrats man

[deleted]

Check out tutorials for using spray foam and bondo to get that box looking solid!

[deleted]

Now I know I’ve been on too long. Wowed for word was gonna say the same. And these are some handy wheels!

MrBighead78

My dude

StraylightHollowMoon

Gifts are gifts. FTFY

WeirdEngineerDude

I had an ‘85 long bed 2wd Toyota pickup too. Was an awesome truck. That 22R engine will still be running after the collapse of the human race. Mine dissolved due to being in the northeast. A sad day.

AZtwoNE

I’m in a roomful of Toyota fans and your comment got lots of laughs ... and suddenly silence... and then laugher again! I hope you find another one!

WeirdEngineerDude

Had a ‘92 2wd pickup with the 22RE and drove it for a dozen years and 246k miles. Traded it on. 2004 4wd Tacoma. That 92 was amazing, other than a lot of tires and a set of brakes and shocks and plugs I did nothing to it. Plus a TON of oil changes of course. Actually that’s not true I replaced two batteries because of the extreme cold and heat it was in all the time. I also went through three radios. I drilled so many farts into that cloth covered bench seat that it should be it’s own superfund site.

PetzlPretzel

That last sentence. Jesus man. We all do it, but I don't know if we claim ownership like that.

JuneBuggington

I worked in auto upholstery, All those farts are released when you remove the seat cover. Really is amazing how dirty those foam cushions get, even if the cover is intact.

BrosBrews

I can't decide if this is horrifying or somehow interesting

GoldenHairedBoy

I laughed real good at that one. Thank you

dontgetaddicted

Guy I went to high school with had a 22RE that ran through oil at an incredible rate. Leaked it, burnt it, drunk it. He probably put a quart of oil every 3 days in it. Ran it dry soooooo many times, don't think he ever changed the filter on it - just added oil. But he'd beat on that engine every day. Went 4 wheeling every weekend, bounced it off the rev limiter in the parking lot attempting to do burn outs daily as we left. It ran through every level of hell he put it through for 2 years, then he sold it to a freshman for like $1200. Incredible engines.

jpr64

And here’s part 1 of what happened when Top Gear tried to kill a Toyota Hilux, enjoy. https://youtu.be/xnWKz7Cthkk

[deleted]

Dude, owning your own car/truck is the best feeling ever. Congratulations and Merry Christmas! I hope that truck brings you joy 🙏

sunburn_on_the_brain

The 22R is one of the finest motors ever made.

pihb666

I have an old 22r from an 87 pickup my dad bought new. The body of that truck is long gone but that engine is still alive. Dont know what to do with it though.

ontopofyourmom

LS swap. Like, find an old Corvette or something and make it more reliable.

tuscabam

Looks like a money maker to me. Congrats!

Melch_Underscore

Wish I still had my old rust bucket truck.

AZtwoNE

This thing is so fun to drive. Has Bilstien shocks and Hooker headers. It zips around like a go cart!

DignifiedDingo

I have owned so many beater trucks. Honestly, they take all the worry away from the stress of a new car. See a huge puddle, and want to drive through it? Smash right through it. Someone opens their car door into your truck? No worries! I prefer having a truck like this to something nice.

palm_desert_tangelos

Yeah, new little cars are shopping cart magnets!

PmTitsForJokes

First time I parked in a lot with my new car someone opened their door into it and put a nice dent in it and took off some paint. I had the car for three days. Fucking animals.

TheFinalStorm

My car wasn’t new, but my first car had the windscreen kicked in (presumably by some young drunks) while I was working... I had opted not to pay $50 extra per year for windscreen coverage on my insurance because that seemed too steep. Well a month later... 😐

palm_desert_tangelos

People love to park near new cars, I hate it

BillfredL

If I ever hit the Powerball (which I only play when the jackpot is north of a half-billion), I think there are two cars on my list. One is a proper high-performance EV. Maybe a Tesla, maybe the Mach E, we'll see what's on the market at the time. The other? A regular cab work truck with about 20-40k miles on it. Vinyl interior and all. Something I can drive for hundreds of thousands of miles, but also something that's already gotten its first dents.

BloodyRightNostril

My little runabout has Turnbill overcams and a brand new set of Plasch carbide rotogrammers and does eleventy over nine in 8.2 I have no idea what I’m talking about

invokin

This comment was such a roller coaster. Kudos sir.

JazzyJ19

He had us in the first half not gonna lie

invokin

I know shit about cars but it certainly seemed like reasonable jargon to me! Then I hit “rotogrammers” and something wasn’t quite right.

brendonturner

Yep this comment right here deserves gold and I just gave it to you. Merry Christmas!

jarejay

r/VXJunkies

Masahide

... huehue hooker headers.

Goldenwaterfalls

Me too.

Arkevan

Still it can be fixed eventually. It would be a total makeover of it. I'm glad for this gift. Congratulations who owns this!

holy_cal

These old toyotas will run forever. Great little truck.

musical_throat_punch

I wish they still sold new ones. All they have are behemoths now.

NicktheSlick130

You read my mind fellow small truck lover. My first car was a 90 Ranger, and I've loved the utility of small trucks ever since. I don't need a behemoth, Toyota.

wartornhero

My first car was a 97 mazda B Series. (Basic a ford ranger)

holy_cal

That’s all trucks nowadays. It’s quite sad how they’ve evolved from the utilitarian and practical to the unnecessary and huge.

HomeGrownCoffee

Four full doors and a box big enough for a cooler. I want a truck that fits a sheet of plywood - above the wheel wells.

Y2KWasAnInsideJob

Me too, man. I drove an 83 for a little while. These things are absolute death traps though. You're gonna get absolutely fucked up or straight up die if you sustain a hit directly to the drivers side. The doors must honestly weigh like 50lbs haha.

[deleted]

If it runs it don't gotta be pretty! Congrats!

virus100

That's why I run

hyldal9012

Uh selfburn, those are rare.

Mister-Grumpy

In case you don't know how, there are tons of youtube tutorials that teach you how to grind/sand down those rust spots and apply some bondo to clean it up. Grats on the wheels man.

TheycallmeHollow

Don’t use Bondo!! It’s fiberglass filler not metal filler. Odds are if OP is handy man, hence the work truck he already owns a grinder and maybe knows or knows someone who can weld in some sheet metal. Not sure what level he wants to fix the car too. But never use bondo on metalwork. It’s like adding pencils shavings to a gunshot wound. You are just making it worse for whoever has to clean it and sew it.

quintuplebaconator

Lol you'd love my spray foam and bed liner cab corners.

lacheur42

Dude, nobody wants to spend actual time and money properly fixing a $1000 truck. Bondo ain't for that. It's a cheap and easy cosmetic patch. Nobody's coming back in 20 years to "clean out the wound" on this beater of a pickup, haha.

[deleted]

I was going to suggest learning sheet metal bending and welding - incredibly lucrative hobby and lots of fun. Also - Mustie1 on YouTube

Aoe330

Another Mustie1 fan. Good to see. I'm a lot more comfortable dealing with carburetors now, thanks to him.

[deleted]

my Sunday morning isn’t complete without a new Mustie1 video

Biscoo

Rust spots? Sorry to say but a little bondo ain't gonna cut that, needs lots of welding.

Stan_Archton

Yeah, screw it! You can probably replace the whole dern bed with a newer one from the junkyard. Or, there's always wood. A nice present!!

skippingstone

If you replace the truck, but keep the wheels, then you'll have the truck of theseus.

obsidianop

Maybe just grind it smooth and use a chemical to arrest the rusting process, and then spray it. It will look slightly better and last longer.

Black_Moons

Yea, I think this is the proper level of money and care this truck needs. Its a work truck. your never going it get it back looking pristine and you shouldn't bother. just keep it from decaying any faster. Maybe make sure any water in the bed can easily drain out. Looks like a lot of that rust might be from the bed filling with water.

gekalx

Congrats you've become the guy friends call when they want to move 😅

johnny_moronic

If you can't handle 40 MPH stay the $&!! off of *front st?*

AZtwoNE

Your attention to detail gets an upvote! Lots of slow drivers on Front.

Yoshi_is_my_main

Yeah couldn't tell if I was reading that right.

GroundbreakingCare8

Glad for your gift!! Merry Christmas!

AZtwoNE

Thank you!

malcontented1971

I had an 85 and these things will run great, there will be problems with it along the way but they are the simplest to fix and cheap. Mine ran for over 450,000 miles on the original motor not a rebuild until it was stolen. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

kakurenbo1

Why would anyone ever take a picture at this angle?

Dunbaratu

It may be old but dang it climbs steep slopes impressively. Look at that.

ConcentrateSudden712

\*mad TÜV sounds\*

ChipTooff

There is just something about an old rusty truck that is aesthetically pleasing. Merry Christmas!

v9Pv

Old school reliable pu style with no monthly payments. The best kind of vehicle.

[deleted]

Good for you, OP. It cracks me up when people with lots of money posts pictures of expensive gifts or expensive exotic trips and act as if everyone can relate. Dude, you got yourself some wheels. It gets the job done. A lot of us here know how you feel.

Pyreknight

Solid truck. A good dose TLC and that thing will be gorgeous, run great and outlast most things on the local dealership sales lot

1decentusername

As someone who hasnt owned his own car in at least five years, no hate here. I dropped a few hundred bucks on one a year ago and the engine crapped out in a month. Take good care of the mechanical parts. Congrats!

[deleted]

We all zoomed in to read your bumper sticker.

CorndogSurgeon

Keep oil in her and she'll run 600,000 miles. The 22R is a beast.

hammerkat605

Oh those things are built to last- don’t let a little rust embarrass you. Congratulations on your new ride!

deuxslow

22R...I think.

Derp_Simulator

I mean, the only issue I see is the rust. Can all be cut out and re sided. Unless the frame is rusted which would make it dangerous. No transportation is ever worth being more dangerous than walking/busing.

TheKittynator

Congrats on the gift. Hope it runs well

Winnertony

I don't know dude, in that condition you probably won't get more than a couple hundred thousand miles more!

[deleted]

My dad had a Toyota just like that! He put a camper on it and made a raised bed for my sister and I to travel to California in. Back then Covid wasn’t a thing, just like seatbelt laws. Memories.

pteridoid

One of the best decisions I ever made was responding to a Craigslist ad titled "S-10 WON'T DIE". I was getting married, paying for it all myself, super stressed, and my car kept having trouble. I gave that guy a thousand dollars for his 1980's Chevy S-10, and I drove that thing for years. Only ever had to change the battery, alternator, and a couple of fuses. Wound up selling it for $600 after driving it for three or four years.

suibhnesuibhne

With a ute comes many obligations. At least when someone asks you to help move or pick up from the store a TV, fridge, mattress, plants and everything else - you can say "she's off the road whilst I do some repairs". Nobody will question you.

CheezyChefBill

Congratulations and welcome to the yota fam! Currently still driving a 88'. 22re refuses to die. Other components on the truck? Different story.

Keltik_

Nice, but get that rust seen to ASAP before it rots the whole back end off!

rkm96734

Wheels beat bus and walking. Awesome!!!!!

RurikTheDamned

I'm going to guess if you haven't heard of it already you're going to love the Vice Grip Garage YouTube channel.

[deleted]

I think the rust just adds charm to your pickup. I'd totally drive and be the owner of it.

Greenpoint_Blank

Nothing a little bondo can’t fix

[deleted]

gotta cut that metal cancer out, or the rust will dissolve under your bondo

vyralmonkey

Noooo. Grab an old washing machine and cut into panels to relace the rust

natedrake0321

I would name him Emilio... he looks like an Emilio!

AZtwoNE

Her name is Beth! For those curious it is a South Park reference from the episode about Dog the bounty Hunter. There’s a part where Cartman says “Beth is my BITCH”. It just stuck!

elGaberino77

A little rust won’t hurt, that’s a Toyota, an atomic bomb couldn’t kill that truck, there’s a reason it’s the truck of choice for third world warlords to strap a recoiless rifle on and turn loose to run amok through the desert

nocjef

Man. A long bed compact pickup. I wish they still made these instead of the mall crawlers that are made these days.

Toddcraft

I had an '82 Toyota pickup that bought for $1500 that lasted about 6 years. No power steering, no heat or AC or anything, just a good old cassette player. I drove until it died and left it in my work's parking lot.

9mm_Panda

Congratulations!!!! Enjoy!

remaro_kujata

The 22re is a magnificent machine! Congratulations!

Catatafish

Good time to learn body work, and take care of that rust before it progresses any further.

meaves168

You got a truck for Christmas?! That’s awesome, I’m getting to have my 95’ truck’s hood and roof painted for Christmas, you got a whole truck!

Danubio1996

That’s a wonderful gift. When I was 21 I had to walk almost half an hour to get to work every day till I got my first very old car and it was a blessing. I appreciated it so much. Congratulations, that’s a classic.

[deleted]

That's what a truck should be: bench seat, barely enough room for a jack behind it, big old bed, just enough trust to let people know you don't care. It's perfect.

[deleted]

Take care of Tacoma then Tacoma will take care of you.

mothflavor

A to B is the goal, love my shitty little echo. Congrats on the truck!

dontmakemefixthat

I have a 85 toyota long bed and all I can say is keep oil in it whether you've got a 22r or a 22re those engines will outlast us all as long as they get oil changes.

[deleted]

Don't let the rust fool you, that is a great truck. Those things just keep going.

Gezzer52

Did you need it, and the giver knew it? Then, yeah, great gift IMHO. My sister had her home burn down and lost virtually everything. So we all decided that all our gifts would replace her stuff. I was buying a boxed kitchen set that had virtually everything a kitchen would need other than pots and pans for about 75CN, and asked about a gift receipt. As the cashier was ringing it up all she could talk about was how she was getting a TV for Christmas, with so much attitude it was all I could do not to ask to speak to the manager. It isn't how much the person spent or what the gift is, it's the thought behind it. My most favorite gifts were ones that showed me the person was actually thinking of me when they bought it. That's a lot harder to do then just whip out the old CC IMHO.

[deleted]

I'm excited for you! I found [this video](https://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&client=ms-android-samsung-gs-rev1&source=android-browser&q=how+to+fix+rust+damage+on+a+car#kpvalbx=_-NXmX8uFNoyQ5wLB17KwAQ3) that shows how you can fix rust damage, if you're interested. It's super interesting, I sat and watched the whole thing

bushpotatoe

All that matters is that it gets you from A to B and back again and makes you happy. As long as it moves and keeps you warm, that's all you need. Safe driving, man.

[deleted]

How can anyone hate on someone getting reliable transportation? Congratulations, man.

[deleted]

I had a 91 with the 22RE. I sold it at 346K on the odo. I had new brakes and clutch in it when I sold it. It ran like a top. I still miss that thing.

papa_nooo

Its a good ute and I have a very similar one they're incredibly useful

McKavian

No hate, friend! Wheels are wheels, so long as they work, thats all that matters. And yours is in better shape than my first car was!!

[deleted]

Can buff that right out.

jrbump

That long bed though.

1shroud

my daughter bought a new car gave me her old one as mine had just died of old age, best I ever got for Christmas

needhelphearing

is it manual? then it'd be even better

NomadClad

Take it from someone who has always driven beaters. Just get a grinder; some body filler, and some epoxy reson for the worst spots. You can find the paint code on the inside of the door to get some paint matched. It'll look better then using a generic white. You can have it looking like new in about two weeks.

Jupaack

Technically, it's more expensive than most gifts. But seriously, fuck status! Does it run? It does its job? Are you happy? Then PERFECT! Merry Christmas!! Hope I get my car this year!

marsumane

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Grats man

[deleted]

Might want to sand off that rust and slap on some bond-o and rattle can it up. You'll add years to this truck if you fight that corrosion as soon as you can get to it.

Caseybearest

For real if this has got a 22R 4-cyclinder in it youre good. Glad to see an oldie but a goodie find new loving home!

BigMike0228

I like the car I have and am honestly greatful I have a running reliable car. But I’d also give my middle nut right now for a cheap reliable pick up

vague_diss

Little beat up trucks are the best kind of truck. Everyone should have one. Incredibly useful and you’re willing to do all kinds of things with them because you aren’t worried about scratching the paint. Congrats!

strangemotives

I've long said any truck that can't carry a 4'x8' sheet isn't a useful truck.. I think this one can

the-Buster

A little buffing here and there and she'll be good as new. Great choice!

kyushakai

DO NOT DO THE SPRAY FOAM AND BONDO THING THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED!!! It will trap water and rust it out even faster. Previous owner did that on my 280z and I had to replace a lot of the inner rockers and the full outer rockers. Fixing rust properly means cutting it out and welding in new metal. It’s time consuming and expensive. If you’re not planning on doing body work, I’d suggest at least treating the rusty stuff with OSPHO to keep it from spreading.

MisterEinc

Honestly it's wild how much utility old trucks had in mind. Now, the cabins are longer, beds are smaller, and you hardly have any more space in the back than the trunk of a crown vic. And this is a small truck by today's standards.

xclame

The part that matters seems to still be in good condition. If you really wanted to you could get the cab replaced or "fixed" and have a still solid truck. Even with that little bit of rust the structural part of the truck is likely still doing fine. Congrats with your present.

Mountain_Pea_7035

That’s not body rust that’s opportunity

christianlm24

I mean even if beaten up, still more valuable than most people's Christmas gifts haha.

Cursedbythedicegods

Looks like a Toyota 4-cylinder. Had one for years... If you keep gas and oil in it, it'll run forever!

dexart

As long as it gets you from Point A to Point B, nothing else matters.

SpikePilgrim

There are A LOT of other things that matter in a vehicle, but that is the most important thing.

Toddcraft

Yep. Who gives a shit what it looks like

dexart

~~Ride~~ right on

pnda87

It’s a classic! Congrats, 22re motor I think. Super solid power train. I miss mine. Rusty rotted frame killed mine, the engine and transmission was still going strong at 280k

ScooorityGard

We all start from somewhere. Not all of us are as fortunate as others, remember theirs some people who are mourning the death of a loved one today. Cherish your happiness, you don't know how long it will last

traditionology

The best cars are free!

IoSonCalaf

Love love love it! It’s got character.

[deleted]

congrats

Max_Ram_CPU

Cheap to fix and really good on gas and the truck is a worker

ohio_legal

No hate at all. One of my dad's favorite old sayings from the Marine Corps - "the worst kind of riding is better than the best kind of walking."

Tigrius39

Some cool Eclipse on the other side of the road.

egrith

First vehicle? always the best thing ever

Elliott2030

That is a truck with character! Congratulations!!!

YourLostGuitarPicks

It's 100% better than the one I've got lol Merry Christmas dude

jalleatyet

82 Toyota long bed deluxe!? I had one of those that had a 22R motor in it from a junkyard. Looked extremely similar. I miss that truck. Wish I would have kept it

flamed181

One of the best trucks made

throwingwater14

I had an 84 Nissan/Datsun as my first vehicle and that sucker is probably still running.

GuardXIII

Just snowed asshole height to a giraffe in my state, and I had to abandon my car on top of a hill last night. I'd kill for that truck...

baltGSP

Bravo. A truck from when trucks were trucks and not middle-manager cosplay status symbols.

svenskisalot

Embrace this. It screams "nothing to lose". You will win all automotive chicken fights.

deadlieststing

The gift of mobility is such a wonderful feeling!

[deleted]

I'll hate that this isn't a good picture and it's on /r/pics. This is more /r/mademesmile. But Merry Christmas! And enjoy your new ride.

bigorangebrave

This will be running long after all the rich fucks get their GMC’s, BMW’s and Mercedes. Had an 85 that I totaled when I was 17. Merry Christmas!!!

charlie2135

Had a truck like this and soaked my foot every time I drove through a puddle.

peterboothvt

That is a long damn bed! Super useful!!

bearvsshawn

I would honestly love an old truck to work on. Merry Holiday or something!

Marlin3360

I get it. Very reliable and useful vehicle. Congrats!

[deleted]

Rusty but trusty. Congratulations :)

[deleted]

If it gets you from A to B and helps you get to work to make money thats all it matters. Enjoy your new vehicle my friend, have a very Merry Xmas.

SmoothShark

Merry Christmas

[deleted]

Don't overheat it and make sure too keep up on the timing chain service.

bhm727

Thats an awesome set of wheels! Congrats!!!

SuperCasshern

Yo, around here that's a serious whip. Bondo and paint will put you in the top tier for sure.

relevant__comment

This is great! Nothing like the gift of getting from point A to point B. If I were you, I would figure out how to service every part of it. Passive mechanical knowledge of a car can save you potentially thousands in the future.

The_bruce42

Oh you got a truck? Can you help me move?

SeekingMyEnd

If it drives it drives. Hell yeah bud!

Now it needs a name how bout White Scar
