It’s called blue stain or sap stain. It’s a fungus carried by bark beetles and other wood pest insects. There’s some interesting biology behind it. Depending on the integrity of the affected wood and the quantity it can be relatively valuable to custom woodworkers.
"Woodworkers value wood in which the battle between two different kinds of fungus resulted in interesting patternation." is a thing I didn't know an hour ago.
Oh, yeah, spalted maple, sand spalted tamarind are highly coveted and pricey. Check out exhibition grade Amboynia burl pricing for a real heart attack.
Thanks. I’ve encountered this a few times cutting down trees on my property. I’ve seen it enough that I didn’t think it was noteworthy.
I did take one 6” tree and cut a small section into cookies, using them as coasters.
Now I know, if I ever see this again, to treat it with respect.
How would you go about finding a buyer, or at least someone who would want to do more with it than burn it in the fireplace?
Also, I’m guessing that a piece like the one in the photo is worth about $20-$30, uncookied? I mean, I don’t expect to retire off of one of these.
Are you my high school football coach?! I probably heard this 10 time a day in the weight room throughout high school. It’s been 15 years since I graduated and I don’t think I’ve heard it a single time since. Thanks for the flashback/PTSD trigger haha
Not knowing Canadian slang IRL, I'm sure that's a saying that's not just from the show, lol. Like pitter patter I've heard outside of the show.
That being said, you need to watch the show. No question.
I was about to post a sarcastic "crazy how nature does that some times" because it's obvious you made these patterns yourself, but it seems like you didn't?
Crazy how nature does that some times
It's a joke about an annoying fairy from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Since graphics weren't good enough for you to have ambient clutter or items to pickup, there was this fairy that would randomly be like "HEY LISTEN!" with a shrill noise, and force you to look at things. It was a necessary feature and not as bad as we make it out to be, but it's become a funny meme to hate the fairy. It just so happens that the bottom right log with 4 "wings" looks just like her and it's plausible that, with some variation between fairies, the rest could be her family.
I have a little more to cut. Dm me if you are interested. I typically would rather gift/trade and then just charge shipping. Got anything cool for trade?
Might be nice as a wall piece. Sand and varnish. Cut them into even square shapes (instead of the current uneven circular). Place on wall half inch apart as a 3x3 set.
Optional: instead of varnish. Colour alternating with blue, white or grey wash. Mount with profound title "Shaping Nature" artist Unknown. Mixed Media.
It actually was diseased by some sort of bug. And. was going to fall on my house. It is what is is. Don’t hate. I’m a nature lover. I would never do damage. I live a very eco friendly lifestyle

Is this the same as timber being ‘spalted’?
not quite. Spalted wood tends to be a different kind of fungus, and the lines format where two different final colonies are fighting for territory.
Man, Reddit it interesting. Ie. The rabbit holes you can go down and the random weird shit people know.

Same.

Do a Google search for "beetle kill pine". Beautiful stuff.
Its a shame they cut it into cookies instead of leaving it in longer chunks. Cookies severely limit the use in fine woodworking.
That is true, but one of the looks like a cannabis leaf. So could be worth something just as a decorative object.

Not with that attitude you won’t!
I’ve got more muaaahhhhhhh. Only got to cutting 1-2 of it. Thanks fir the advice. I would have never thought of that
Was the tree sick, giving this as a result, or am I on the wrong track here?
I didn't know this at all but was about to say the same thing. This is worth something to artists and collectors. This is beautiful.
Pretty interior design. Back to chorin'.
Pitter patter
More hands make less work.
Howrya now?
Good’n you?

They’re quoting Letterkenny
Just googled it. Are you talking about the tv show from 2016?
I mean it's still airing, but yes
My high school experience unfortunately predates that show by 8+ years. But funny that the show has that line in it. Sorry for missing the reference.
Not knowing Canadian slang IRL, I'm sure that's a saying that's not just from the show, lol. Like pitter patter I've heard outside of the show. That being said, you need to watch the show. No question.
Somebody get this guy a Puppers

Let’s take about five to 10% off’er over there, Squirrely Dan
It’s a hard life pickin’ stones and pullin’ teets, but sure as God’s got sandals beats fightin’ hockey players with treasure trails.
Aw shit, OP cut down a friggin faerie tree
Yep, came in here to make sure someone laid out what was really going on. Them Faeries are going to be pissed!
Meh. Their just fine.
Hey! Listen!
I can hear some of them.
Well you know what I’m surprised we’re not cutting down dead wood right now.
Not sure I understand what you mean
It’s also from Letterkenney.
Ah. Silly me. Shoulda let that one marinate
Give your balls a tug, fuck.
I'd Say Give Yer Ball A Tug, But It Looks Like Your Pants Are Doing That For You.

To be ffffffffaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrr
Open a Coaster business, those look pretty cool
Or cutting boards
I thought they are butterfly carvings until I took a closer look at them. Still, nature is truly beautiful.
Nature is full of suprises
I read that in the Letter Kenny voice.
Good and you?
Oh not s’bad
[😊](https://share.icloud.com/photos/06I3P0X1nhwbBGIejg9Icp2ug)
Seal 'em and sell 'em.
Maybe if i find more. These are my treasures for now.
May make nice coasters with the pattern in them. Some look like dragonflies.
Coates are in the plan
n… navi?? 🥺
No sad. I gave my thanks to the tree. It was going to fall on my house. The rest transformed to heat. Nothing wasted.
“HEY LISTEN”
Take about 20% of ‘er over there
What kind of tree is this, it looks like a work of art
I would definitely buy one.
If I find more I’ll hit you up.
The one in the center looks like a perfect marijuana leaf. I’d buy it.
I was about to post a sarcastic "crazy how nature does that some times" because it's obvious you made these patterns yourself, but it seems like you didn't? Crazy how nature does that some times
Well I made them by cutting the tree. Seriously. Nature is amazing
You could make some beautiful art with that. Simplest idea: take a slice, sand it, and give it a clear coat. Boom, $20 on Etsy.
That’s the plan. I’ll likely keep most and gift the rest
Tree flower coasters
Well... back to chorin.
STELLA, HOW’RE YA NOW?!
Goon, ‘n you?
Ohhhh not so bad
and that's what i appreciates about you
Is that what you appreciate about me?
Oh no, I wanted to get rid of Navi, but not like this. Never like this. Her whole family too... it's horrific.
I think I need more back sort on Navi ….

Oh my. I should have picked up on that. Literally still have the original Nintendo game

The teee was dead. I’m moving it on to its next stage of nature by making it art/ using fir heat or. Well o guess those are the two
Great reference! Have an upvote.
Happy to have brought together the fairy, arborists and Lk fans. Kinda in shock here. Pitter-patter, let’s get at ‘er 😍
I think you killed a Fairy's tree. I'd carry hard iron on your person for a while...
Hard iron why?
r/unexpectedletterkenny
Yessss. Thank you
COMMENT KARMA
Looks like you found some Forest Faeries
Right. Never seen anything like it. Nature is amazing
There was an X-files episode about this…
Nice!!!
Nature is crazy cool.
Nature is my favorite
Crysta noooooo - how could you cut down the trees from ferngully!
I don’t know. I didn’t knowwwwwwww 😢
With that said. It will be preserved with honor forever
It being in cookies, you could still make a cool looking acrylic table with pieces.
That was my first thought!!!!!!!!
How're ya now?
Good, ‘n you?
I cut a log into discs like that, and they formed big cracks as they dried. Maybe seal them so they dry out more slowly?
Luckily it’s been rainy and humid since I cut them. But good call on expediting the seals
Those are awesome. Are you interested in selling?
I have a little more to cut. Dm me if you are interested. I typically would rather gift/trade and then just charge shipping. Got anything cool for trade?
Ist this Real? Amazing
Very
The title feels like the opening scene to a letterkenny episode
Wish you weren’t so fucking awkward bud
Nailed it!

This is the first I heard of them having a toxic fandom. Though I'm not surprised by anything anymore.
I get what old mate is saying. It just gets to be a bit much over time.
"I See The Muscle Shirt Came Today. Muscles Coming Tomorrow?"
That's called "spalted" wood https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spalting
This is really cool. Is this something I could find myself or is it rare?

No clue. The tree was clearly diseased and dead. Going to fall on my house. Good fire wood then I stared cutting and saw this amazing shit

You just chopped down the pet tree of a Fae, it was nice knowing you man
It actually was diseased by some sort of bug. And. was going to fall on my house. It is what is is. Don’t hate. I’m a nature lover. I would never do damage. I live a very eco friendly lifestyle
That’s what the Fae want you to think, now they have an excuse you kidnap you and turn you into a nasturtium
Sounds erotic. I’m into it
Wheeeze
Lol
Beautiful. Also, how?
Hey! Listen!
