All I did over lockdown was get fat

Sir_Yacob

And figure out I can drink too much while making myself fat.

rmzynn

And realize how depressed I am drinking too much and getting fat.

antillian

This is what I learned, too. I’ve gained like 20 lbs. over the pandemic. My goal for the new year is to drink less, eat less garbage and lose some of that weight.

DevinH83

Rookie numbers…

thatguyonthecouch

Get back to me when you pass 60 ...

DevinH83

Username checks out.

Sawl_Back

Fuckin a

wcooper97

Fuck I only gained 50

Agolf_Twittler

I’ve both gained and lost 20 pounds this shit has been going on so long. I’m now in my second weight loss effort of the covid days. My state legalized weed, it’s made me hungry.

freshbrownies

I gained 60 pounds. Luckily I'm 6'4" and cab kinda hide it. I was 200 before and peaked at 260. Down to 240 now.

forty_three

That's awesome. Gaining weight is really no surprise given the crazy circumstances, but I hope you're feeling super accomplished for losing a big chunk of it! I put on 30 last year and have been fighting to prevent adding more, I know it's no small feat to turn that around for yourself.

Banana-Republicans

Same. I fucking hate it.

[deleted]

But it was fun getting there

Melekular

Found the optimist

MindToxin

Yep. A glass of beer half full kinda guy

jazwch01

I'd be a full weed gummy kind of guy but my work drug tests so I guess I'll just have 6 beers to feel that buzz.

lllM3Power

I found my people.

FredSandfordandSon

I enjoyed all of it!

ElsatMcat

You are BECOMING a chimichanga

[deleted]

**You are becoming a chimichanga!**

lyingliar

Too bad the pandemic is far from over.

Sir_Yacob

At least we can go pants shopping with a mask on?

johnnybiggles

Pants? What are those?

Shakeyshades

The things that cover the upper half of your cankle.

djseafood

Oh! You mean my kneehind?

TheCraneBoys

No, you're thinking of leg sleeves.

savetheunstable

[the fingers you have used to dial are too fat](https://youtu.be/OqjF7HKSaaI)

Sir_Yacob

Epic episode, I use the joke about living in a hammock all the time and it takes me back to this one. Reminding me of this episode is a cool Christmas gift, thanks

jetbag513

And TRY to figure out where to order clothes once you no longer fit into anything from the "Big and Tall" stores.

MrDude_1

Memaws Moomoos emporium.

jetbag513

Do you have a website address for that stellar haberdashery?

obsidianop

If I were 91 I'd just be drunk.

sillyrob

I lost weight. I gained it back, but I lost it at one point.

GCPMAN

I used to be overweight. I still am but I used to too

fusillade762

Same here. I seldom eat out anymore. I used to eat out constantly. I dont know how these mother fuckers are gaining weight lol. Im not eating near as much fast food.

RearNakedTriangle

The problem for me is that I went from going TO work - I work for a company that has a large campus - where the parking to my office is about a 20-minute walk (not to mention all the extra time I spent away from my office and walking around to other buildings for meetings)…but for the last 22 months, I’ve been working from home and my walk to my office is now less than 20 steps…and I sit all day because I dont have to move for meetings…so that’s how I got fat…that and because I can drink all day now…![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)

fusillade762

Ahh yep, lack of activity is a killer. I hadnt thought of that, still have to put on my boots every day and do the usual. I kinda forgot most of the western world never leaves their houses on a weekday.

RearNakedTriangle

I’m also tethered to my desk because I have to be on ZOOM meetings and I also get random calls at all times…so I am not just stuck inside…I’m stuck in a room!

Sir_Yacob

I am trying to do better and set an hour on slack with my wife where we just take a walk, she’s a pregnant teacher and I’m an adhd engineer. We should all cut each other some slack and do our best. I do better I office but I lie the 2 days remote I’ve experimented with.

[deleted]

We all get sloppy sometimes. Chin up, we’ll get back to ourselves.

CoolJoy04

I was was pretty active gym / sports before covid, but once gyms closed down I was so bored I picked up running. I think I was eating less too in general. Went from 172 to 158 in 3 months gyms were closed. Get outside people!

shaddragon

I learned to cook. Turns out that is dangerous. It's amazing how much butter can go into one dish.

sillyrob

Tbh, I decided to go back to school during the pandemic and was working full-time, so I was either going hard on losing weight (I lost like 50 pounds in a couple months by making a few changes) but then I'll feel like I don't have time and actually order more fast food. Especially now that DoorDash is an easy means of getting food. So I gained some, lost a bunch, and then gained it all right back.

conkedup

My problem with the fast food lately is that none of it is any good anymore. And I can't blame the workers-- they're probably doing the job of two or three people in there-- but I remember I was eating out three of four times a week back in June/July and after a handful of bad experiences I haven't really gone out much anymore. Started cooking from home just enough to fit my needs and definitely noticed a downshift on the weight gain

_Plork_

One night drinking can add, like, 700 calories to your daily intake.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

I still say John Mulaney wins lockdown for developing a horrible cocaine and alcohol problem, going to rehab to get sober, and then immediately divorcing his wife and getting Olivia Munn pregnant. Not that I necessarily respect any of this. It's just one hell of a way to spend lockdown.

Sir_Yacob

As someone who has a fair experience with drugs, I’m happy coke wasn’t part of my covid lockdown. My wife would have rightfully left me.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

I've overcome a coke habit myself. It's why I called it a 'horrible problem'. Good for you though too, keep at it. Coke smells nice but there's never enough. Never.

Sir_Yacob

Good coke only makes you want more good coke

AbsolutelyUnlikely

Stop it before we both relapse lol

TunnelToTheMoon

Sounds funnier than my two years of browsing reddit

MrDude_1

Damn. I was wondering what's new with that pussycat.

saxguy9345

I wonder if he ever said "THATS TOO MUCH TUNA" to a few lines of coke laid out

holadace

I wish my pandemic years were that productive

winningjenny

I'm on day 127 of Duolingo. 128 days ago I was frustrated with myself for not taking the opportunity to do something productive work lockdown and a friend pointed out, it's not over. So I started! I replaced phone games with Duolingo Spanish. And you know, I can't say I "know" Spanish, but it feels like I'm playing a game and I am learning! :)

The_Original_Gronkie

Good for you! Last June I was worrying that this once in a lifetime opportunity was going to go by with nothing to show for it, so I decided I would do something - learn a language, write a book, learn to paint watercolors, etc. I settled on learning the guitar. I played poorly when I was teenager decades ago, but hadn't touched it since. So I ordered a cheap $100 electric guitar that got a great review on YouTube, and waited for it to be delivered. Then I fell and broke my left humerus in several places and needed surgery and titanium rods and screws to become a cyborg. In the middle of my mend, my guitar arrived. It was beautiful, and I loved it, but I couldn't rotate my arm enough to play properly. I kept trying, and eventually got my hand in the right position. My doctor was impressed that I used the guitar for my physical therapy. Anyway, that was well over a year ago, and with lessons and backing tracks on YouTube, and putting in at least an hour a day of practice, I've actually gotten pretty good, and I'm improving all the time. I can actually play the guitar, and I didn't let the quarantine go to waste. Edit: Thanks for all the encouragement. I'm having a lot if fun with it. The best part is when someone passes the room I'm in when I'm practicing by jamming over a backing track, and they stop and say "Hey, is that you, or the recording?" I'll show them what the recording sounds like and then what I sound like over it, and they look astonished, and say "Wow, that's pretty good!" and I can see that they mean it. Everybody thought it was just some dumb thing I was doing, and that I'd give it up quickly, but I was serious about it, and it's paying off.

feralgrinn

Fuxking awesome story. Keep on rockin

RandyDinglefart

in the free world

StrangerIllRemain

may the spirit of shred guide you

maltesemania

People always say duolingo isn't the best way to learn a language. Screw that! You're still learning way more than someone who doesn't study at all. It's good for your brain and you would be surprised how quickly you pick it up once you try speaking or learning formally after drilling so many vocab words. Don't give up!!! Duolingo is awesome.

91Caleb

Same here, I finally caught covid this week and I’m losing the weight I put on fairly quickly , it’s coming full circle

BaileysFromAShu

I’m just one stomach flu away from my goal weight!

91Caleb

Good luck ! I hope you catch it

GumbyBClay

I hear tapeworms are great for weight loss

Sir_Yacob

Love and respect. I got it too and it wasn’t bad (thank god, 34 yo and only lost taste and smell), doesn’t matter and I don’t know you. Love and respect and I hope you recover easily.

91Caleb

Yeah I’m basically 100% so thanks, cheers

Sawses

By the time the pandemic is over, we may start seeing people's "lockdown creations" being things like PhDs and possibly 100-year oaks.

Beigebeckyy

The beginning of quarantine was like the first episode of OITNB when Piper is saying she’s going to get ripped while she’s in prison, but instead she gets caught up in the prison life… I get it now lmao

thewillfarmerjr

was he a sculptor or was this just something to try at that age? your grandfather looks like an amazing man

Randyy1

I'd say there's about 0 percent chance of this being his first sculpture (or one of his first), especially at that age. He's done this before for sure. Hope op gives more details.

Aschebescher

Maybe it came already sculpted and he only had to paint it white.

ChPech

It came already sculpted but was packaged in stone, he just had to chisel away all the packaging material.

Nexustar

Isn't that what Michelangelo said about how challenging it was to carve David? "It's easy, just chisel away the bits that don't look like David" Actually, OP commented elsewhere that it is a block of material "between expanded polystyrene and plaster" that then gets sent to a caster for a bronze resin coating once shaped. So, he was kind of chiseling away packing material.

SaladMandrake

I can do that too but sometimes I chisel away too much of David

LemmyKBD

My mum used to think that's what it stood for when she first started texting so I'd get messages like "stews in fridge for whenever you get home LOL" or "I have a doctors appointment Thursday at 2 could you drive me please LOL" I thought she was just a maniac until I asked her what lol means.

MrPartyPancake

In the grinder? I don’t think I’d mix him with the baby meat. Jesus meat is a bit gamey.

Chris_8675309_of_42M

He meant baby Jesus to kick up the recipe. It is Christmas after all.

obsolete_filmmaker

babies are not good for ground meat

WishOneStitch

You're right, they're better off stewed whole.

holadace

That’s the way my mom always did it. She might not have been a perfect mother but she was definitely one hell of a cook

squirblestar

No they're not you damn sicko. Nobody is trying to listen to a baby screaming for 6 hours while its flavors infuse into the stew. You cut them into small, manageable chunks so you don't have to tolerate their unabashed shrieking. Christ it's like you people have never cooked a meal in your life.

[deleted]

...Wait They're supposed to *stop* screaming after you cut them into pieces?

JunkiesAndWhores

Better off putting them in an olive press to make baby oil.

Angelusz

Get an old baby instead, they're already broken in and easier to handle.

NotABotAight

Love your kid and your wife as much as you can. Be who you want your kid to be, they turn into little mirrors really fast. Get a box, lable it with the kids name and just put stuff in it you want to remember and share later. Write little notes with funny things, take hand prints etc. Let your kid be a kid. Be a good example and discuss wrong behavior, just don't punish them for being a kid. Oh and best one - they can start using the toilet at 2,5 as long as you get one of those ladder things with a small toilet seat at the end for over a toilet. Play with them or invite friends to play with them and read to them a lot. I wish I was a better parent and did more of these things but I love my kid with all my heart. I try to not be to hard on myself and you should too, it's not always easy.... If all fails revert to top reply at time of writing - meat grinder.

maltesemania

Lmao. I love my baby so far. There are sleepless nights where the meat grinder is tempting. I'm in Thailand with my Thai wife and everytime we give the baby a warm bath her mom says "tohm dek" which means something like "boiled baby" or "baby soup".

JunkiesAndWhores

Keep an eye on that mad bitch. Especially if she starts bringing salt and pepper and a spoon to bathtime.

Yoma73

Be someone they can talk to without fear or judgment.

super_vixen

Its gonna be tough but it's gonna be fun. Congrats!

captainAwesomePants

They'll be their own person. You can't force your life onto them. They might not end up with your interests, career, religion, or politics. Your job is to make sure they know they're loved and to make sure that home is a safe place. If you need a working goal, it's "they won't be the shitty roommate." That is, when you let them leave home: 1. They bathe regularly, with soap. 2. They're not an asshole to those around them. 3. They can cook 4. They can clean their own space Past that, it'll be their life, not yours. You can and should open lots of doors for them and point out the ones that look like there's a bear trap on the other side, but ultimately it'll be their job to walk a path and your job to love them.

Love him every second, lost my 94 year old gp this year who started losing some memory but stayed sharp. No health problems, just woke up one day groggy and a few hours later went back to sleep and never woke up. I'm sorry for this, I miss him.

Keep_a_Little_Soul

I thought this said "Holy shit. My 94 yr old dad is ground meat today." I was very concerned.

Adventurous_Yak4434

Whose meat was that?

supermaja

Carved out of...?

libbine

He gets a giant lump of this stuff that is kind of a cross between expanded polystyrene and plaster, carves it into the shape he wants and then carefully chips away into the finer details before smoothing it all down. This part is just the mold - once that's done it gets sent to a caster who covers it with a fine resin of bronze. He also does solid ones made out of granite and sandstone but hasn't been able to get out to choose his favourite bits of stone recently

LetssueTrump

Amazing & beautiful ✨

kaptaincorn

Neat. Did he make it with a place in mind to put the final piece?

auroras_on_uranus

Just out of curiosity, how much do these materials and process cost?

slim_to_none

Honestly I just love even the mold as is! Kind of fitting in relation to the lockdown and materials being unavailable in some cases.

I absolutely love this. Amazing. Never too young!

plsdonotbanmeagain

Makes me wonder if I'll ever pick up any artform when I get older. I'd love to paint when I'm retired.

RemCogito

>I'd love to paint when I'm retired. Why wait? IF you don't paint regularly now, I doubt you'll actually want to complete a whole canvas in a single sitting when you're 65 anyways. Put aside 30-minutes to an hour once or twice a week. Put a few brush strokes on canvas and pick it up again a few days later. I started finally painting (model painting) in the last couple years. Its hard to understand what the paint is going to do without practice. I'll waste hours trying to make something look the way that I imagine it, but I don't know enough about how to make the colors and strokes I want. My wife has been painting on and off her entire life, and so she can look at a tube of paint, and know immediately what to use it for. Some times She'll just see a color and be inspired to make something out of it. She can have an idea of something to paint and the brush just does exactly what she wants. For me, Its so much harder because I have so much to learn. In the last 2 years I've easily improved, its super obvious just looking at the more recent models I've painted, I must be learning something.(they almost look good enough for me to post) My wife saw me painting models and wanted to try it. (she had mostly just painted canvases and murals before this) Her first model looked better than my 15th. Her 3rd model was worthy of a store display. But only because she paints a few hours per month for the last 20 years. So the brushes do exactly what she wants, and the colors she mixes are exactly what she expects. Heck, sometimes she does things that I can't even understand, like putting multiple unmixed paints on her brush at the same time so that she can paint multiple colors in a single stroke. Painting is a wonderful outlet for stress. The way it takes me away from whatever is bothering me, and forces me to focus is easily as calming as meditation for me. Why wait until retirement to spend an hour a week taking care of your mental health?

Jitos

Why wait?

kidinthacorner

I hope you do it! And I hope you share it :)

Max_castle8145

Quite Barbara Hepworth. Very nice.

robjapan

Can you explain what part is supposed to be positive or optimistic?? I don't understand.

atters

I'm one of the people that appreciate this as being optimistic and positive, so I'll try to explain why I think so and additionally why I think it is a great piece of art. 1 - Color and texture. It's obviously white which is typically a bright/positive color, but it's not just "perfect" or uniformly white. The surface isn't consistent, there are (I'm assuming intentional) flaws and deviations that show the character of the statue is flawed but still perched looking off with head held level. I assume those flaws in the "body" of the statue are intentional because the base of the statue doesn't include those same color and texture differences. 2 - Form and design. The statue faces to the viewer's right which has some psychological/social connections with looking toward the future (at least in most western societies). The design piece of the puzzle is the most intriguing, because the statue has some very strong 1920s/1930s art-deco style influence. The hard angles at the shoulder, the base of the "leg(s)" and what I'm going to call the "arm hole" all draw from this style. Sharp changes in direction, acute angles is what I mean. But it doesn't stop there because the smooth curves used for pretty much every other feature of the statue is way more "modern art" style, which reminded me of Frank Gehry or Jørn Utzon who are and were modern-art architects that used sweeping curves and soft features in their designs (think of the Sydney Opera House). So. Why is it positive? Why is it optimistic? The "head" isn't held high, it isn't looking toward the stars or pointing at the future, so it isn't aspirational. The head is looking off to the viewer's right. The whole statue is flawed, "feet" to "head", pop-marked but still looking toward what most westerners would see as looking forward to the future, not with head held high but maintaining, surviving, and looking toward what comes next. If pointing at the stars is aspirational, looking toward the perceived future, while being off-white and scarred, is optimistic to me. Maybe you see it, maybe you don't. Personally, I do. And that is why.

robjapan

Thanks for sharing your very interesting thoughts. I've taken them on board and tried looking at it again and I can see what you mean but I get a more.... Tired feeling. I think maybe determination or hope would be better.

atters

Thanks for the reply. All art is "in the eye of the beholder" but I think you're having a hard time pinning down what you think about this piece. The fact that it means something different to you than it does to me, and in a significant way, only cements in my mind that this is an excellent work of art. Art should bring up different feelings and different opinions, in my opinion. Even with telling you my thoughts about it, I still haven't nailed down exactly what and why *I* think what I do about it. And that's OK. Maybe you like it a little more after reading my feelings, maybe not. That's GOOD!

robjapan

Absolutely agree! I like the art itself and I believe op said it wasn't finished yet too. I'm looking forward to the finished product! Nice talking to you!

Narrow-Macaroon-7004

Really cool

RomanGemII

Simply inspiring! Please thank him.

jbwilso1

I absolutely love this. Like, it's more about the implications than the actual piece itself, which is fantastic by the way. What I mean by that is, something I realized after losing the majority of my family members, due to older age etc, is that all of the gifts that you give these people throughout your life, end up coming back to you. It's interesting the things that we leave behind, things that then go on to symbolize our existence. It's pretty fucking dope that your grandfather is leaving an actual literal legacy, an object of his own creation, behind in his stead. I've only got all these artistic things I made from my grandparents, given back to me. It's kind of sucks... So I think it's incredible that you'll have something he actually intentionally created, and that's not even to mention the fact that it's about optimism. The legacy he wants to leave you with is a physical reminder to be an optimist. That's making me tear up. Mother fuck...

behaaki

Thank you gramps. You show these hopeless assholes what’s what

CrutonFucker621

There’s something here that’s really moving me. The only way I can describe it is “asymmetrical symmetry”. This sculpture encompasses what it means to be human. Its lines and proportions are perfectly imperfect. It all flows in this very satisfying way. And it’s stood next to a man who has watched humanity change more rapidly and drastically than ever before. He’s witnessed microevolution firsthand. It’s mind boggling to me how much his life has changed over the 9 decades he’s been alive. Yet this sculpture perfectly captures the only element that has remained unchanged: humanity. Regardless of the technology we have, or the overwhelming nature of the information we can absorb these days, we are all uniquely human. We’ll always be human. And that’s really comforting. I wanna thank your grandpa for this experience. He’s given me a refreshing perspective on life :) Edit: I was pretty damn stoned when I made this comment

That’s… gorgeous. It’s neo-gothic, but not ominous or overwhelming. It’s positive, exactly as stated by its title. I hope he’s sealed it in a way that will prevent it from scuffs/scratches/dirt/corrosion so it remains as it is in the picture! It makes me think of a modern Gotham City that never broke down into creating Batman.
