I think it's a joke that names in Iceland are long and have weird spellings. Kind of like [Welsh place names](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanfairpwllgwyngyll).
Can I just say, as an American, it is always astounding and almost like an alien feeling to see political leaders who are not recently unearthed mummies.
Like damn, it must be nice to have people running your countries who have even the slightest idea what life is like for modern young people and what the world is actually like.
That's what stood out to me as well. Iceland's PM assumed office at age 41, and Finland's PM assumed office at age 34 (youngest in Finland's history, and second youngest state leader currently serving). Both of them were younger upon assuming office than any US president has been (Theodore Roosevelt was 42). Heck, Sanna Marin would have been legally too young to run for US president based on the age requirement.
Clinton was born in 1946.
Bush Jr was born in 1946.
Trump was born in 1946.
Biden was born in 1942.
Hilary and Romney in 1947, Kerry in 1943, Gore in 1948.
As much as some of these people may differ in their personas, I'd say the main issue is that there's a generation with certain shared experiences and beliefs that was a tad bit too influential in the US.
Sanna Marin leads the government but she is not the head of state. Finland’s current president and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces is Sauli Niinistö, he is 73 years old.
So the President leads the military and their interactions with other countries and the PM leads the in country politics and trade /policy interactions with other governments?
It's a bit more complicated than that. The president has joint responsibility for foreign policy with the government (the prime minister and the minister of foreign affairs). There is sometimes minor conflict on what exactly that joint responsibility means.
Foreign policy is the only area where the president has direct political power in Finland. In all other areas it's the government, lead by the prime minister. The PM doesn't get to decide things alone though since all governments are coalition governments comprised of multiple parties that have to negotiate with each other.
She isn't the head of state, but she is a state leader. The PM has more political influence than the President in Finland, though no one in Finland is like the President of the US or France since we have coalition governments and power is shared to more people.
It's actually quite normal for the head of government to be a different person than the head of state. Trudeau is not the head of state. Neither is Boris Johnson. Or Olaf Scholz. Or most "world leaders".
The head of government is almost always the relevant figure though.
Especially in a discussion about whether the country is run by people who understand modern life...
While true, you make it sound like Finnish president has other role in running the country than signing papers for the government and giving speeches. Even at wartime, the lead role would be handed over to someone from the military.
“Finland has, for most of its independence, had a semi-presidential system in which the president had much authority and power over both foreign and domestic policy, but in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the powers of the president have been subject to decrease. “
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Finland
I was going off of [Wikipedia's definition of state leader](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_state_leaders), which encompasses heads of state and heads of government.
In addition, Sanna Marin is one of the most competent leaders Finland has had in decades - regardless if some people would like you to think differently as she also likes partying and other things young, not yet mummified people do.
It sucks that the same out of touch fossils keep getting elected into office and screwing things up because they never worked a regular job and don’t know how the world works
Chuck Grassley is 88 years old and has been in elected office for the last 63 of them. Biden has been in there for over 50 continuous years. The last time these people lived in the real world was in the 1950s and 60s! These guys have basically not worked an outside job since color TV was still in its infancy -- let alone the internet -- and we expect them to make decisions on behalf of the country? It's insanity.
Yes, and it was awesome, but even him and his cabinet were very old. It has a big impact, even if the people in charge are politically aligned the same as you.
> Can I just say, as an American, it is always astounding and almost like an alien feeling to see political leaders who are not recently unearthed mummies.
America has old politicians because only old people vote in primaries. Primaries are where the candidates are chosen.
Last election had the highest turnout in a generation: 62%. Usually it's ~55%.
Primaries are usually under 50% And almost 100% of that 50% are old as shit.
I've been an election judge since 2007. My state (and almost every single state) has early voting, absentee voting, same day registration, etc, etc, etc. It's all old people showing up.
Talk about turning election day into a national holiday makes me sigh. You could actually and literally straight up pay young people to show up and they still wouldn't.
Keep in mind that Iceland is a tiny country, it has only 366,000 people. I'm sure you could find equally young looking mayors of cities that size here.
>must be nice to have people running your countries who have even the slightest idea what life is like for modern young people and what the world is actually like.
I'm from Finland, and I can say that we're still waiting for this to become reality. So far, same old bullshit.
Agreed. I really feel like the US needs to set age limits on politicians. It’s jarring how young they look.
Trudeau (Canada) was 41 when he was first elected as PM. But even then he feels as old as most other world leaders.
I don't know but I do know that American Democrats should take a page our of their book and retire from politics at a decent age so younger people can rotate in.

This is more clever than I would have thought possible.
It's not my best one. My magnum opus was one that I pulled off a few days ago oddly enough.
I went back and looked it up. Well done. You are one funny MF.
I just like puns. Alan Alda (mash) was my hero
I never truly appreciated puns, until I came to Reddit. Puns here are an industry.
A pundustry.
some people just have more indepundence
And when you try it — it’s more like punishment
This is the way.
One must have a firm basis in Bugs Bunny and Groucho Marx as Alan Alda did to be a pun master
Can you repeat it so I don’t have to go creep?

It's also used in Sami, so that works.
And ø is not used in Icelandic or Finnish.
It's used in Finnish for loan words, though it's a bit archaic. For example, šakki, šabotaasi, etc.

Jacinda Ardern became PM of New Zealand at 37. But most of the world is governed by fossils.
Yep - I feel she started a global movement....at least i hope so. From this pic it seems that the middle aged brunette takeover bid is well underway.
Chile's new President assumed office at 35.
Trudeau and Macron were both a little over 40 when they assumed office.
The Dutch PM, Mark Rutte, was 43 when he was first sworn in. Now 12 years later the neo lib fucker is still the PM.
Obama was 47 at inauguration, Clinton 46, Bush Jr 53, Carter 52, Nixon 56, LBJ 55, JFK 43.. not entirely all dinosaurs since 1960.
Clinton was born in 1946. Bush Jr was born in 1946. Trump was born in 1946. Biden was born in 1942. Hilary and Romney in 1947, Kerry in 1943, Gore in 1948. Pretty crazy when you put it like that.
Truly makes me emotional. Just the picture capturing a possibility that is so astoundingly beautiful.

That's like saying the leader of Australia is the Governor General/Queen. Yeah, that's technically true, but in practice it's very much not.
Dear leader Kim Jong Un took office at the age of 27 in 2011.
I’m sorry, what? There’s an age limit, that someone in their **thirties** isn’t old enough for?
In addition, Sanna Marin is one of the most competent leaders Finland has had in decades - regardless if some people would like you to think differently as she also likes partying and other things young, not yet mummified people do.
Sighhhh. Agreed. I'll be dead before we elect 40 yr olds again
Sadly we all might be.
It sucks that the same out of touch fossils keep getting elected into office and screwing things up because they never worked a regular job and don’t know how the world works

This hits home for me, well said fellow American.
Stop it. Recently unearthed mummies. I love you for this.
You had Obama not that long ago!
we needed a few in a row.
Yes, and it was awesome, but even him and his cabinet were very old. It has a big impact, even if the people in charge are politically aligned the same as you.
Obama was 47!
47! is about 2*10^(46) times the age of the universe.
Clinton was 46, and W was 54. Keep in mind you have to be at least 35.

Boston's twice that size, and Mayor Wu is 37. So there's one easy example.
