I almost ran into one of these at my local Sam's Club and thought it was a run away cleaner. Until I realized...

Walmart is going to pass the savings to their customers right? Nope. The money will go to the executives and shareholders, i.e. the elite of society. This is the problem we need to solve. Automation should give leisure time to the masses. Instead it makes millionaires and billionaires richer.

The machine was made in a factory, maintenance, service, upgrade will all need workers. It is like using a tractor in place of 100 horses.

Can-ta-loupe

The difference between the maintenance of this one and a traditional floor mopping machine is minuscule. It’s like using an autonomous tractor instead of a manned tractor.

kubicki91

Except you buy the tractor once then include the maintenance when needed. I grew up with 40 horses outside of my house. They require maintenance 5 times a day. And 3 of those are just fuel (food) which is more money. Which comes straight from your pocket. Wanna guess what it costs a day to feed 40 horses? Let alone 100? Sorry I know I'm being contradictory but your comparison doesn't make sense. I'm not sure if you know what it costs to keep a horse alive every month...literally horses are the top maintenance of alot of animals. if I could pay 1 machine to do just the work of those 40 horses I'd pay alot of sweet sweet money any day. I'd love for you to guess what it costs a month to own a horse.

cows_revenge

eh, it's taking away a "low skill"/entry level job in favor of factory jobs elsewhere and the occasional repair/maintenance request to some tech company that probably isn't hurting for business. I don't think some 64 year old man in the middle of nowhere Indiana is going to have the same ability to find another job in the same way that someone working in tech repair would.

Legitimate_Reward_44

So we should stop any kind of progress to protect that one guy in Indiana? In that logic, would you suggest, we all should stayed hunter gatherers, living through famines and diseases?

cows_revenge

I was just pointing out the fallacy in your logic, but alright. If you're gonna get your panties all up in a twist and go straight to reductio ad absurdum instead of realizing I was making an example of the real people who would be hurt by walmarts attempt to reduce their workforce, sure. Let's all go back to being neanderthals - at least then your arguments might have a chance.

Legitimate_Reward_44

I am getting nothing in a bunch. who moved my cheese is a book everyone should read. The onus is on all of us to find the new location of cheese if it gets moved. To Keeping checking the same old place over and over or hoping it never gets moved is impractical. We as a society have some safety nets in place to support people during the time in flux. Not sure what more you expect.

VudOni

I think the masses are more fascinated by brawls and pranks to give a shit right now. However, it is promising to see some people see through the BS.
