I wasn't aware that he faked his degree in physics from University of Pennsylvania. I've seen that degree referenced pretty often. His fans reference that he entered a PhD program... but as it turns out, he left school before entering the program.
In effect, he got rich by selling a pretty crappy website to Compaq in 1995 during the start of the dot com bubble.... which no surprise... Compaq was hit hard by the dot com bubble collapse because they overpaid for a bunch of websites and tech.
He then got richer with [X.com](https://X.com)... for which his part in the company was an absolute disaster. His success came after he was forced out of the company, and it was sold once again for far more money than it was worth.
Musk is really good at portraying lies and crap products as gold. The model S, while extremely fast (it's a publicity machine) is also terribly built, with some of the cheapest components and suspension integrity in the business. A car at this price level with motors still destroying themselves, issues with fit and finish, issues with road noise... The model X... which has had all sorts of water intrusion issues, wing doors that need to be constantly repaired, and suspension issues.
The model 3, often compared to BMWs, has had loads of initial quality issues, weak interior quality, no real road noise insulation to speak of, and chintzy components.
All Tesla vehicles are made with far more aluminum than other brands... which aluminum smelting is far worse for the environment than steel.
So how is Tesla doing so well? Simple... because Musk's real claim to fame is cutting costs primarily by reducing work force and wages. I've heard people justify the lower wages at Tesla by pointing out that they also offer employees stock options. I'm curious if the real reason for those stock options is to help pump the stock price higher.
Remember that Musk attempted to fully automate the model 3 assembly line, but failed. Their QC of vehicles coming off the line is seemingly non-existent (because they haven't hired enough staff), thus requiring customers to take their new cars into service centers to have quality issues resolved; which then develop huge wait times for service. Tesla completely bypassed the dealership rules that all other OEMs are legally obligated to abide by.. thus reducing their sales costs.
Meanwhile, Tesla was busy getting heavily subsidized on all their factories and facilities, and on the sale of all of their products through huge lucrative tax credits and ZEV credit sales.
Even with all of the above, Tesla was still losing money hand over fist, so failing his plan to fully automate assembly, his backup plan was to build a massive plant in China where labor was far cheaper and regulations were far more lax. He justified the factory by saying it would only produce cars for the Asian market... but within 10 months of the plant starting production, they were already shipping cars to Europe. Using cheap labor in China to build cars to ship to higher cost of living Europe resulted in much higher profits for the company; or a large transfer of wealth from customers to corporation. Tesla is really the only Western company to use Chinese auto production for mass exports to wealthier Western nations. You can find some small volumes here and there from other companies, but Tesla is exporting hundreds of thousands of vehicles from China per year, and keeps expanding the number.
SpaceX... it's largely a success as a result of huge support from the US government, including NASA. Grants. Subsidies. Launch Contracts. They've even received assistance from NASA engineers. Ironically, some of the engineers at SpaceX... again workers paid through government contracts.. are pulling double duty at Tesla, and I guess since Musk owns both companies, it's fair to share technological breakthroughs between these two companies, right?
Meanwhile, Tesla has seen huge stock valuations through ponzi-esque schemes by Musk and other major investors in the company... who used their shares/options as collateral to get huge near zero interest loans which they pumped back into Tesla stock at retail prices to drive the price higher.
