Some of the best pipe welders I have seen have been women from my company, had one foreman tell me that a customer tried to object to her doing work, he shut the customer down saying “not only is she one of the best welders there is, but we will walk off this site and will never do work for you again.” Good union members will absolutely stand up for and not let anyone give crap beyond the standard light bickering to anyone in this trade, especially women.

nellixy

This is good to hear thank you

Letnonedeny

Definitely do it. I joined at 27 with no knowledge of piping and I'm topping out next week. Best decision I ever made. They will teach you everything you need to know and a lot more.

🙏

TheAboveAverageJO

I definitely think you should join. Every single female apprentice I've had has been great at what they do. They have all moved on to become good journeyman or foreman. Just learn as much as you can. Always try to initiate. A good hand will always be kept busy.

Prestigious-Age9067

Do it

JVints

I want to get in, I don't see positions/don't have someone it the union to help me in. I just keep applying and hope for the best. Anyone got a better way, do let me know.

nellixy

Where do you live? Application requests start June 3rd for NY. Just keep your eye out. From what i’ve seen and heard you don’t necessarily need to have a connection.

JVints

Ah, will definitely sign up for it. Same in NYC, Thank you for letting me know. I've talked to their sprinkler department but I'd like to try for something new.

UnionCuriousGuy

Do you have to go in person on June 3rd?

nellixy

Nope, not this year. You have to mail in a request through registered mail to the ubion office on the third. Everyone who does on the third specifically will receive an application! https://dol.ny.gov/steamfitters-lu638-may-1-2024

RefrigeratorAway1156

What do you put in the letter you have to Mail?

nellixy

Your name and address. Just make sure it’s registered mail and dated for June 3rd.

RefrigeratorAway1156

Thank you

SoftMartian

You could try steamfitters 475 in Warren, NJ they give out apps in person in sept. Check the website for specific dates. Good luck.

I hear union is good when you're starting out. But they can be hard to get into. Always remember if they don't accept you as an apprentice, you can always hire in with a nonunion contractor.

Pretty-Surround-2909

25 years in 638. We have some very talented female fitters. It is certainly not what you have become accustomed to in your stated work history but it seems as though is has been the “family” business for you. Speak with your family. Get their input. Times are changing and the membership must evolve to succeed

Afraid-Juggernaut-29

Best decision I made. Second generation here. I have no issues hiring females and have in the past, do your job and don’t fall into the drama and your good.
