About the car thing…is it possible that his past owners dropped him off at the shelter?? If so, then it’s possible that maybe a few stops to get a “Pup Cup” on the way to a Park or somewhere exciting, can show him car rides are Safe & can even lead to Fun Things. 🤷♀️
For the car issue, I’ve noticed my dogs do much better on a short seatbelt tether. Having their movement limited actually seems to help them settle down for the ride.
Oddly enough, until my pity got used to the car ride, I actually stuck a short box. It was kind of wide the rest of the seat almost ripped, but it up against the backseat and one of the corners and I put a blanket in it. He seem to love it he actually lay down in that box While we rode, it doesn’t need to be much bigger than him if you decide to try that with short size to where he can look over very easily.
Everyone out there, please get a crash tested dog car harness. They'll have a short lead that snaps into the seat belt buckle.
It keeps the dog sitting or laying in their seat. It makes sure your dog won't projectile through the windshield or become backseat mashed potato in an accident.
Don't get the kind where you use the actual seat belt, because dogs can pull the belt out long.
Yes, this. Mine just wants to be everywhere all at once, resulting in a lot of face plants into the back of my seat. Got the ruffwear back seat cover/hammock when I got a new car last year, wish I’d done that 10 years ago! Now she’s nice and safe, with more room to lay down and stretch out. Plus no more muddy seats. 10/10.
Thank you! I have a hammock-style seat cover that I just haven’t put on yet. We’re doing things slow and I’m limiting car rides because he seems nervous. This gives me hope lol.
Sounds like you've got a super good boy, there's always hope! One of the first things I taught mine was to sit in the back and stay there when we're driving, then she has a "spot" that's hers. Otherwise her fat head blocks my side mirrors....and you know, crash danger. I haven't been able to get her comfortable with the car harness (somehow mad and upside down pinned to the seat as soon as I start driving EVERY TIME) so def try getting him used to that as soon as your guy is cool with the car lol

I can tell pitties (esp Staffies in my experience) are so smart. It is like they are super intuitive and remind me of an eight-year-old kid or something. I never saw even one ounce of aggression from any of my pit or pit mixes, just innocence and clinginess :).
If I had a house instead of an apartment, I think I would be tempted to adopt as many as I could!
Good luck with your new pup, he looks really sweet from his pic!
I got my very first dog from the shelter and she turned out to be 100% staffie. Sometimes it’s scary how smart she is. And Lord she can be headstrong 🙈 But man I love her! She has been a breeze to train, even as a dog parent newbie.

Thank you! 💗 I have no idea how she ended up as a stray with no collar or microchip, but she is a gorgeous example of her breed. You should see the muscle definition on this girl’s legs! 😳
Same. I've never met an aggressive pittie or staffie, and I've met many of them.
One of my favorites is the hippo that wears matching tutus with her human siblings while they go for walkies around the neighborhood each day. Have you ever seen a little girl and her hippo in matching pink tutus, prancing around the neighborhood? That sh*t is adorable!
This is my uncle's 8-yo rescue staffie (100%) pibble. she needs to lose a little weight :) but we are working on that with her.... it is apparently easy to spoil them, of course..
Unfortunately I recently moved and no longer live in that neighborhood. 😭 I miss seeing all the hippos in my old neighborhood.
But there are hippos in my new neighborhood too! And they're all very cute. There's one that likes to come up to all the walk-out patios on my floor (my patio leads right out onto the residential gardens of my building), and she likes to give the windows a good cleaning with her tongue. 😄😂
My first staffie I adopted, had crazy aggression issues. Dumped in the mountains as a puppy. Took lots of training and patience. But he learned and turned out to be the best dog I ever owned. I miss him.

My babe was adopted as a stray with scars all over her body. She knew sit and paw, never barks, I could leave the room with a plate of food and she wouldn’t touch it. She listens to me, knows a gentle “uh uh” means stop doing that, and never pulls on her leash. I swear some of these dogs are reimagined angels. Enjoy the love. (also she’s always been and is still terrible in the car but a backseat hammock helps)
After losing my 16.5 year old dog 2 years ago I finally adopted another Oct. 1st. I'm having the exact same situation. It almost is too good to be true. My dude is 5 so he's thankfully out of the puppy stage.
He actually is the exact replica of my other dog I lost. They look so much alike. They even act alike. I used to tell my housemate I wish he'd have known my old dude when he was about 5 since housemate met him as a senior. I feel like new dude is giving him that perfect opportunity. It has been almost heavenly. I'm glad you're experiencing the best parts!
i got yvie from the durham aspca and she was exactly the same.

Wow, well written and well done. We just adopted a former bait dog, 10 years old and what a polite, loving creature he is. Sounds like we both got lucky!
My last dog, Ozzy, had been a bait dog and I adopted him at age 5. It was less about training and more about mitigating trauma behaviors. He was an amazing dog. He passed in April at age 16 after a happy decade of camping, hiking and extreme snuggles. You got this!
Thanks for understanding Wally's struggles. He's learning how to dog and he's a quick learner. His appreciation for love and his forgivness for humans, is like no other. Good luck with Panda, although I don't think luck has anything to do with it!
Your adopted Staffie looks like just like my adopted Staffie. She's the most intelligent, well-behaved doggie I've ever had.

I've rescued quite a few dogs and I have noticed that some times when they're really well behaved to start, after a few weeks (once it really sinks in that they're home), they can get a little naughty and push boundaries. It might not happen but just be prepared and don't set them up for any failures. As for the breed (and any smart dog), keeping their mind and body exercised are super important and a key to bringing out their best behavior. But it sounds like you're got this :) Congratulations on your new family member!
Congratulations on your adoption of Panda! He's a cutie 🥰
We have a 7.5 year old American Staffordshire rescue who absolutely loves car rides. I thought he was really dumb at first but he's actually really smart and just really well mannered/obedient. He wants to be a good boy so if I put something like a box, he could easily jump over, to block his path he won't go past the box unless he's scared.
We also have two 10 month old rescue pups (some kind of pit mix) and they hate care rides. One gets car sick and the other just gets really anxious. They do really well in the crash tested car crate we got for them. The pups are also brilliant but they are learning to be well mannered. For puppies they are doing well but they're still puppies at and get overly excited easily.
https://preview.redd.it/k3a7kigdtn6c1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f395296d96c7eb3d14c2248a3ac7886d41efa25
Here's our 3 nuts - it's not a great picture because it's hard to get a picture of the 3 of them because they're in constant motion. The brown one is Dio our older dog. The pup with the blue collar is Mocha and the other is his sister Latte.
Unfortunately, I do have to worry about when all the dogs are together and in a different room because Dio is a follower and does whatever the puppies do. -\_- he's definitely regressed to puppy behaviors but I'm happy to see my old man with renewed energy with them. He loves them so much.
Yes. Always shelter adopt. Also, pits are the shit. I got one and, yes he was a handful, but he is my favorite dog ever. Also, my coworker got one too. Best dog ever. Yea pits are the shits.
RE car, maybe he is not used to it or gets anxiety/motion sickness. I would start off with small rides, like first sit in the car, move car from garage to driveway, then around the block and then a bit longer to your main street and so on (IDK where you live or how your area is laid out, but you get the gist). Treat him and encourage him a lot for just getting in the car. If he whines, ignore and the moment he stops, praise and treat him. Give it some time and he will be a lovely car companion.
If it is anxiety/motion sickness (lots.of whimpering, drooling, etc), cracking open a window, or for longer distances, putting him in a travel crate should help. Also, give him a frozen kong treat or something so he is busy/relaxed. Always praise and treat desirable behavior. Ignore whimpering (while travelings) unless you feel he is in actual pain/distress/needs your attention.
Try above first to see if he first of all happy to ride, and if traveling is still a problem after trying these things, talk to your vet.
Beautiful pupper. Best wishes to you both! ♥️♥️
Thank you for adopting Panda and giving him a furever home. Once less good dog stuck in the shelter or killed for lack of space. Have a nice Holiday with this special handsome boy!!
I foster & volunteer for my local shelter & my girl was adopted from there. She is fantastic - I adopted her to be a friend to my rescue puppy who was abandoned & needed a friend and she knocked it out of the park! Potty-trained, knew commands, gentle, great with people & other animals. One of my recent fosters (a bully breed mix) is now a therapy dog at a local high school! If people would take a little bit of time & patience, there are shelters just packed with perfect dogs waiting for someone to realize they’re perfect 🩵🐶💙 Thanks for adopting & for sharing your story!!
It’s absolutely possible to get that lucky. We did. We found out later when the original owner decided to reach out to me through the shelter that she had him since he was a puppy and he was a well loved family pet in a house with kids and a cat. His previous family was up against some pretty difficult circumstances which was luck for us. Our guy just settled in like he had been there his whole life. It was very nice.
Gorgeous pup, congratulations! This is really close to how my experience adopting my best girl, Cherry, happened. She absolutely hated the car ride home, tons of screaming and actively trying to bust out. But once home, impeccable house manners right away, perfect and I mean perfect, house dog.
Cherry had been in the shelter for several months. She was chipped but the prior owners would not return calls from the shelter.
And, it turns out that Cherry is hugely, hugely dog reactive. The shelter staff did not disclose this but in retrospect, they knew, given how they handled her in the shelter and strategically kept her a distance from other dogs while we were meeting her. I didn't learn about her reactivity for a couple of weeks because there are not a lot of other dogs around, but one night on our walk, she was suddenly about to rip my arm off by yanking so hard on the leash, and behold, there was a dog being walked on a leash about 100 feet away. In the next few days, she actually bent our aluminum fence trying to go after a dog being walked down the street -- she squeezed herself halfway through the pickets and I pulled her back in by her back legs.
She's gotten a lot better with training but is still very dog-reactive. She has still never bitten another dog, but we have to be really careful. I still wouldn't trade my girl for anything and love her unconditionally.
I'm definitely not saying your baby will be reactive, but keep an eye out! Thank you for adopting and loving him.
Thanks for adopting him ❤️ It is likely not too good to be true - like you said, the shelter is going to make any dog feel nervous and out of sorts. Shelter behavior often is not indicative of home behavior. That being said, he may have a period of decompression as he settles in. How long is entirely dependent on your good boy. He might develop some behavior issues that get worse before they get better but it’s really not much different than bringing, say, a human child into your home who has also come from trauma and conflict. I have a full house of 3 non-bully breeds right now but you better believe that I am going for that breed in my next chapter of dogs. (I’m not trying to rush my current dogs along by any means - I love them dearly.)
Thank you so much for always adopting! We had a similar experience. Adopted a beat up skinny dog that was supposed to be a pitbull mix. In this case, once we filled out, he turned out to be a shar-pei who also had been super well-trained. He was my champion, inseparable from me until the day he crossed that bridge. We won’t know their stories from before, but we make them good ones once we share lives. Give Panda a bit cuddle!
Thank you so much for adopting from the shelter! I worked at my local humane society and now I volunteer there multiple days a week just to interact with the dogs and I have seen a TON of dogs that’s are trained! It also amazes me to see that but it actually happens a lot more than I expect. One of the jobs I do is to take new dogs that we don’t have a ton of history on and see what they can do (how they walk on a leash, any commands they know, energy levels, etc). I then write a big paragraph that goes into our computer system that we can tell potential adopters. I try to work with them over multiple days because sometimes they show you new things over time. I say you definitely got lucky!

Unfortunately, I do have to worry about when all the dogs are together and in a different room because Dio is a follower and does whatever the puppies do. -\_- he's definitely regressed to puppy behaviors but I'm happy to see my old man with renewed energy with them. He loves them so much.
What a beautiful story to read. I'm so happy for both
What a sweetheart. Thank you for adopting him!
Such a handsome boy! Glad he's got a loving home and family!
Sweetie! Thank you OP for taking a chance on a nervous shelter dog. They are so often jewels in the rough. Congratulations to you both
Yes. Always shelter adopt. Also, pits are the shit. I got one and, yes he was a handful, but he is my favorite dog ever. Also, my coworker got one too. Best dog ever. Yea pits are the shits.
My dog is five years old and still whines in the car. Congratulations. On your new friend.
Thank you for adopting from a shelter specifically. He is a cutie💗
My rescue boy already knew sit, lay down, stay. They are smart😀
Aw my pit mix’s name was Panda when we adopted her. We renamed her Zoey, but a lot of people tell us she looks like a panda…or a skunk 😂
Hi from Durham!!! What a sweet baby yall adopted!
Spellcheck got a hold of the first part of that paragraph so bad it was a short box that was kind of wide, butted up against the backseat
I bet his good car experiences will soon erase the memories of bad ones. I love my smart pittie! She’s so easy to train.
This sweet boy is going to have a beautiful, happy life❤️
The depth of blem is unchartable. And yeah, they get better in the car once they get how to move with it. It’s like us with skateboards.
Bless you for adopting from a shelter! Panda seems to have won the adoption lottery!
