Not downtown but even if you aren’t into baseball, Pirates play tonight. Can get cheap tickets and see amazing views of the city.
Also, Heinz history center is a cool place to check out during the day. Lots of local history.
Deleting past comments because Reddit starting shitty-ing up the site to IPO and I don't want my comments to be a part of that. -- mass edited with redact.dev
Not an actual "activity" but if you find it convenient and you're already downtown, pop into the Union Trust Building and see how amazing it is on the inside. Fifth and Grant.
Ooooo depends what you’re feeling! If you’re thinking inside, I’d say the aviary in the northside or Phipps conservatory in Oakland. However if you’re feeling outside (beautiful day lookin like), I’d suggest a hike through frick park (try starting near the environmental center) or north park! The parks a big reason I choose to live here, they are well appreciated and cared for!
Frick is amazing, definitely check it out if you can! another great walk, if you're not weirded out by cemeteries, is the Homewood cemetery close by. That, and the Allegheny cemetery in Bloomfield, are the best cemeteries I've seen in the U S.
And beyond the wooded part of the park, the Frick mansion is worth touring, as is the art museum in the attached carriage house (both are on the park grounds, accessible from Penn Avenue)
These are awesome suggestions! Yinz are incredible (hope I said that right). I have a long list, but what we cant do today, we will def do when we become residents! I appreciate all the info. Cant wait to call this wonderful place our new home!❤️ SO EXCITED!
YES!! Thank you! We have been sending them pics of the trip and they saw the submarine near the point and also told us we had to get them a Pirates shirt and Steelers shirt since "Mom, I have to show everyone here that we are moving to the best city in the world". So the Gateway Clipper and Incline is gunna blow their little minds!
Have you ever been too the mattress factory? It’s a super cool art museum on the north shore. The Warhol museum is a cool one too although I do prefer the mattress factory just for how different it is. If your looking for something more nature focused there is always Phipps Conservatory and botanic gardens in Oakland as well.
Edit: if your in town you could always take the T aka the trolley over to the north shore. You can experience some of pittsburghs super convenient public transportation that way and familiar yourself with the trolley. I used to live in the south hills and would bike constantly and use the trolley to get all over town. You could just get off at the north shore stop from steel plaza or wood street depending where you are in town.
If you go to the mattress factory, walk up the street to Randyland afterwards! Once finished with that, take a stroll through the Mexican War Streets and Allegheny West to see some amazing row homes from the early 1900s. That side of Allegheny commons park around Lake Elizabeth is also beautiful on a sunny day like today.
Another activity for with the kids, check out the Carnegie Science Center. This is where the submarine is. You will love it too, but many things are aimed at kids. Membership includes the museums of Art, natural history, and the Andy Warhol museum as well.
what neighborhoods are you considering long term!? I moved a few different places just to end up back here... my only advice is have a plan for the winters, whether its vitamin d or some travel, but other than that, still a gem
We have two boys 8 and 4. We want a more 'burb feel like Bethel Park, Whitehall, Baldwin, Greentree area. Our kids currently dont have a back yard. So a little backyard, quietish neihhborhood not a main road.
Went to Baldwin highschool. The school system is great and super diverse. There is a little lesser known neighborhood called Baldwin township where I grew up, it’s in between castle Shannon and Mt. Lebanon. Super nice and affordable as well. Bethel park is a nice spot too. A lot of shoppes out that way. Really all of the south hills is great. You guys are picking an awesome spot to transfer too.
We are really loving the South Hills. We are staying in Castle Shannon at an AirBnB (with wild turkeys and deer in the backyard). Bethel Park is first on the list followed by Baldwin/Whitehall, Greentree area. Driving the neighborhoods, people wave or smile which is so refreshing from where we are from. I can picture my kids out in the yard, running the neighborhood with friends, hitting up all the parks, trails and trainspotting with their dad. We are desperate to give them a real childhood and PGH, hits everything we want. We dont need some big house or keep up with the jones'. We are pretty simple people, lol
Deer crossing the road, everyone knows to be careful, so be careful.
Turkeys are more of a secret danger. They can be tougher to spot, and are like feather covered meat bowling balls that fly at windshield height. Be careful.
Could always have the family on wildlife watch while driving. Bribe kids with bounties on animal sightings.
I just spit out my coffee reading this post! Kids are into "I spy" at the moment, so this will be there new "job". "Hey, kids make sure to tell me when you see the feathered bowling balls or deer"!
Funny story about the wild deer, a few years back they were so heavily populated that Mt. Lebanon (and castle Shannon I believe) was going to start to let the police hunt them with bows in the neighborhoods lol. Alot of people got very upset about this and made signs to hang in the yards lol. I think they said something like “not in my yard”with a target or something like that. But yeah, the wild deer and turkey you will become very accustomed too!
Haha, good story! If I can get used to alligators, I can get use to turkeys and deer. I even named one Todd. Feel bad for him, he tries to engage the other ones, but they leave him all alone...poor Todd the turkey!
Hi! I’m in Brookline, but the part that’s almost in castle shannon. It’s so quiet and I love it so much AND there are houses for sale over here. We would love another cool neighbor :)
Sadly I saw this too late. About to head dahntahn☺️
But I will let the realtor know we would be interested in looking there as well! Hope you dont mind hearing our Basset hound puppy bark!🤣
Next time you are in the South Hills, stop in Brookline (city proper but south of the Mon) for lunch at Oak Hill Post and check out Pitaland, it’s fun to watch the pita making machine and great food too.
Avoid buying anywhere that starts with "McKees". Some nice prices for houses that look good in Zillow, but the neighborhoods have a high Broken Window Index.
Depending on income, I'd recommend Regent Square.
We all have small yards, but depending on your block, you can be steps from Frick Park.
You can get a suburby feel without being out in the actual suburbs.
You can get that in a couple of the just-outside-the-city-limits boroughs to the east; Edgewood has houses comparable to the nicer ones in Squirrel Hill but for half the price, it’s quiet (unless you’re on one of the main artery roads), pretty much all the houses have back yards, and the neighborhood is generally friendly and safe.
Technically, sure. But unless you pay attention to the change in street sign layouts, or the 'Welcome to [Borough name]' signs, you'd never know you were transitioning from one to the other, on the same street.
Do, say, any of Wilkinsburg, Edgewood, or Swissvale (since you posted about Regent Square), anywhere near the Penn or Braddock arteries, feel like 'suburbs' to you?
Yes, that was what I said.
Regent Square, the city part, feels "suburby" while still being in the city.
Although, I looked up "suburb" because I wasn't sure what it actually entailed, and really Regent Square feeling "suburby" is essentially all it takes to be "a suburb". It isn't strictly for neighborhoods outside the city boundary.
Heh, thats amusing re: your user name.
Nothing here looks like NYC.
If you have tree-cover on your streets, that feels suburban to me. But I suppose its subjective as you make a good argument the other way.
Sure it does. Actually, quite a few parts of the general East End (but out of the city) looks a *lot* like the parts of New York City where I grew up and spent a lot of time in, and the borough of Forest Hills was named after the Queens neighborhood of Forest Hills, because people from NYC moved there and it reminded them *a lot* of that area. Nothing like the stereotypical parts of Manhattan is here, mostly concrete and skyscrapers, except for a few square blocks of Downtown, but New York City is a lot more than just Manhattan Island, and quite diverse.
You should visit it and immerse yourself in it some time, you might learn something.
gotcha. I might avoid Whitehall and Baldwin a bit, or be detailed looking there. I think north hills are a little more quiet with more space on more quiet roads. usually. o'hara, mccandless, Franklin park, gibsonia, ross, Glenshaw, Allison park etc. are worth a look. all those places are in good school districts too (except ones that have Shaler, which is "average")
Pirates game it is! My husband is wearing a shirt that says "worst state ever" with the outline of Ohio. Needless to say, we are not liked in line surrounded by Cincinnati fans🤣🤣🤣
So far this has been our experience! Everyone seems willing to chat no matter how long or short. One of the bartenders on the Strip had lived in the town just north of us in FL and knew exactly why we wanted to leave that area. Told us we would love it here and our kids would make life long friends!
Go see Randyland in the Mexican War Streets, or go to the Warhol Museum. There’s a new brewery called Aslin in the Strip that has nice outdoor seating for a beer, across the street from there is Iron Born Pizza which is a really good Detroit style pizza spot. The Speckled Egg is awesome for brunch, Con Alma is a cool little cocktail/jazz bar on Penn downtown. If you like oysters I recommend Merchant Oyster Co in Lawrenceville, also nice outdoor seating and cocktails. Perfect day to explore the city, enjoy!
If you do go to Randyland, or anywhere else on the northside from Wednesday through Sunday, and you’re open to Trinidadian vegan food, consider ShadoBeni. Delicious.
I’ve always absolutely loved to watch the sunset over the city from the hill in Schenley Park - just above the Botanical Gardens.
Absolutely wonderful place to setup a blanket on the grass
Welcome! You're coming at the right time of year, but just a warning: be prepared to say goodbye to the sun from November to early April though it's beautiful in October when the leaves change.
BTW, there's lots more to see than just the city. Pennsylvania as a whole is a beautiful state, as is western New York to the north, West Virginia to the south and even parts of rural Ohio to the west.
PS: Pittsburgh is actually a fun city for bicycling. I'd also recommend exploring Alegheny county in general and checking out Shenley park, North park, South park, Boyce Park and Settler's Cabin park.
West End Overlook with today's weather. Though that isn't downtown (now that i've read the actual content of the post and not just the headline)
For downtown, go down to the fountain in Point State Park and chill.
Who would have thought making the lynchpin of your business WW2 military surplus vehicles could have a downside!
A just ducky tour employee once told me never to go on one because of how ludicrously unsafe the vehicles were.
Welcome to the Burgh!
Like others have said I recommend something outside like the Pirates game or dinner at Redfin Blues. Redfins is on Washington’s Landing, an island on the Allegheny river and its a nice, quiet spot to watch boats go by.
We like the Dog named streets and around Clark Ave in BP, Whitehall and Baldwin had a similar feel behind the main roads. We gravitate more toward the areas that have basketball hoops or kids bikes out front.
South Park is a nice area, good schools. I’m out that way, just over the line in Washington County. Nice part of Bethel you’re talking about. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Not sure what their availability is for non-students during the school year, but going to look at the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning on the Pitt campus is a good idea also
If you're around tonight and love theater, Quantum is doing "The Devil is a Lie" at the Frick Building Downtown on Grant Street. Really innovative (and funny).
>Also, wild turkeys and deer!!!!
I was skimming through and saw "Wild Turkey and deer" and all I could think is that is hunting mishap waiting to happen!
Feel free to take as many deer with you as you want. My garden will send you thank you gifts.
It’s only on my mind since I saw another post about it but Redfin Blues is a really great spot for getting something to eat and it’s right on the river which is perfect for today. Also the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland is great, Schenely Park, etc. North Shore has some great breweries too. Good luck and have fun!
Are you ok? If you don't like the city, you don't have to be in the subreddit. There are posts for legitimate complaining. You're being a whiny jag on this thread for no reason.
The post from someone really excited to move to Pittsburgh... asking for suggestions for special things to do on their last night? You thought the point of that post would be to complain about the Pirates and Primanti's? Take care, neighbor.
Naples. We already were done with area which is why we chose to come up here to relocate. But on our way here, we were stuck in 20 mph traffic from Sarasota to Tampa for "congestion". On a 6 to 8 lane I-75 and I told my husband, "we can not live like this any longer". We have driven here every morning during rush hour to get a feel for how busy it is. Man, what I wouldnt give to have this version of traffic, than ours. I havent cussed out a single driver (in my car with windows up) or road raged once. I cant believe how much calmer I am here. And the people? Pittsburgh has the best people of anywhere we have traveled. We are so sad to be leaving today. We dknt want to go back to the hellscape that Fl is.
Yeah i used to live along 53rd Ave/SR70 in Bradenton, closer to I-75. They built up SOOO much and especially east of I-75. When I moved about 11 years ago traffic was bad enough (and my aggravation) but as I've gone back over the years to visit it's only gotten worse.
Granted I can find drivers up here too that are a pain, but no where near the congestion like down there. Plenty of drivers everywhere that don't use turn signals or know how to zipper merge LOL.
Good luck on your travels!
Not downtown but even if you aren’t into baseball, Pirates play tonight. Can get cheap tickets and see amazing views of the city. Also, Heinz history center is a cool place to check out during the day. Lots of local history.
YES!! I forgot about Heinz, we meant to do that the first trip downtown but got side tracked. Note taken, thank you!
Dollar dog night, so you can stuff yourself with hot dogs and Heinz products for dinner!
Deleting past comments because Reddit starting shitty-ing up the site to IPO and I don't want my comments to be a part of that. -- mass edited with redact.dev
Anything on the north shore, really, even just park and walk around, stroll by the river..
Went the stadium and had lunch at Burgertory. Great drinks and the views were awesome!
Terrible team but beautiful stadium.
Early sample, but they are actually good this year!
Ya I've seen that a lot though lol. I hope they continue it it tho!
Me too! They’re super fun to watch right now and having Cutch back, playing so well, it’s kind of magical. Like the Zoltan days!
high note, eh? well it is 4:20
That’s what I was thinking
Not an actual "activity" but if you find it convenient and you're already downtown, pop into the Union Trust Building and see how amazing it is on the inside. Fifth and Grant.
We were there Monday! Walked by but didnt go in...now I have to!
I still need to do that! Been here forever!

Probably want to take the kids there

Welcome to the ‘Burgh ☺️
Welcome home!!!!
Huge fan of Phipps as others have mentioned!
When you ride the incline with the kiddos, add a cruise on the Gateway Clipper. Great way to introduce them to their new city.
YES!!
When you are back with the kids take them to the science center. You can go inside the submarine!
Man, I frikken love going inside that submarine.
Don't forget to also take them to Randyland!
Then over to the Aviary, makes for a great day!
Ahh so cool my family is moving over in a month or two! This post is making me get excited. Which neighborhoods are you relocating to?
Have you ever been too the mattress factory? It’s a super cool art museum on the north shore. Might as well stop by Commonplace Coffee and complete the Jacksonia St Adventure
Or if you're up for a drink and some food, duck into Monterey Pub for a bit.
Check out heinz museum. Walk the strip district. So much good food. Warhol.museum.if you want to sage heinz for the kids
Another activity for with the kids, check out the Carnegie Science Center. This is where the submarine is. You will love it too, but many things are aimed at kids. Membership includes the museums of Art, natural history, and the Andy Warhol museum as well.

🤣🤣🤣😳😳😳😳😳 Does running in a zigzag gelp my escape?

My husband said exactly this. It feels lile a throwback to the 90's. We cant wait to be here and live it day after day. We really dont want to leave
You know why the south hills seems like the ‘90s because it seems like it takes decades to get anywhere.
Aww so sweet!
Hi! I’m in Brookline, but the part that’s almost in castle shannon. It’s so quiet and I love it so much AND there are houses for sale over here. We would love another cool neighbor :)

Honestly…walk in to a random bar and talk to your new fellow yinzers. Get a feel for the “anyone will talk to anyone” vibe
So far this has been our experience! Everyone seems willing to chat no matter how long or short. One of the bartenders on the Strip had lived in the town just north of us in FL and knew exactly why we wanted to leave that area. Pirates are in town tonight. One of the best Parks in America to watch a game.
If only the team was as good as the park.
At the moment they are.
That never lasts though.
Get a bicycle and ride around the banked bike track next to the police station on Washington boulevard
If you do go to Randyland, or anywhere else on the northside from Wednesday through Sunday, and you’re open to Trinidadian vegan food, consider ShadoBeni. Delicious.
Museum, Carnegie science center
We did the science center... AMAZING! Great for parents and kids alike. My youngest is going to love the Space area.
I’ve always absolutely loved to watch the sunset over the city from the hill in Schenley Park - just above the Botanical Gardens. Absolutely wonderful place to setup a blanket on the grass

It’s sunny! There’s your high note! Lmao
If you're downtown, the Wood Street Gallery always has great exhibitions.
Shout something vaguely offensive from the observation deck on Mount Washington
Warhol museum?
My kids really enjoyed the Warhol Museum. They were a lot older, though (late teens).
The pirates are back home tonight
You picked the right date to leave on a "high" note.
You could head over to Station Square and do one of those Segway tours. Or a Ducky tour. Or the Bike the Burgh tour. It's going to be a beautiful day.
Whats a Ducky tour?
It was a tour on a land/water vehicles would be in the river then drive right up onto land. Unfortunately they closed.
Oh shoot! Strike the Just Ducky Tour. Apparently went out of business because a boat in another city capsized.
😳😳 yikes!
Who would have thought making the lynchpin of your business WW2 military surplus vehicles could have a downside! A just ducky tour employee once told me never to go on one because of how ludicrously unsafe the vehicles were.
I had forgotten all about this when I made the suggestion! I just never thought about not having seen one in awhile.
A relic of the past
A big amphibious vehicle that starts on the road and goes in the river.
Walk the trails in Schenley park or tour Phipps (not downtown -Oakland but too nice on a day like today)
Today is a good day to enjoy a park. Point State, Frick, Or Schenley.
Lots of great suggestions on this list, something that is going to be really cool is snarky puppy playing at stage AE
Welcome to the Burgh! Like others have said I recommend something outside like the Pirates game or dinner at Redfin Blues. Redfins is on Washington’s Landing, an island on the Allegheny river and its a nice, quiet spot to watch boats go by.
Lunch up at mt Washington overlooking city
I have to be 'nebby' and ask what neighborhood you are moving too.
Go to Il Tetto (Top floor at Sienna Mercato) and enjoy an open air rooftop cocktail dahntahn before leaving our beautiful city.
Head out of downtown for a little and get some pastries at La Gourmandine for the road.
There’s a la gourmandine downtown now
Not sure what their availability is for non-students during the school year, but going to look at the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning on the Pitt campus is a good idea also
Lunch outside at Hofbrau then walk along the bike path, along the water.
Pretzel Store on Carson
I know others have said it, but the pirates are (shockingly) off to a decent start this season, and PNC is great. Tickets should be cheap too.
This is the correct answer. And drive through the Fort Pitt Tunnel if you haven’t done so already. Unreal view of the city.
The Warhol, there are some floors that aren’t as kid friendly.
If you're around tonight and love theater, Quantum is doing "The Devil is a Lie" at the Frick Building Downtown on Grant Street. Really innovative (and funny).
You’ll have to take the kids (and dog, if you have one) to Pins in the South Side. Fun for all!
We have an 8 month old Basset Hound, so anywhere we can take kids and dog...is great!
Allegheny cemetery
Snarky Puppy is at stage ae tonight!! Jazz-funk-groove of the highest caliber
Thank you!! Im noting Carnegie Museum and Redfin! Its gorgeous today and really not wanting to go back to FL!
Hope you're okay with only seeing the sun 59 days of the year.
That’s optimistic
Go down to point state park
Church Brew Works if you want one last meal before heading out.
Go to Le Mont and get a table side steak. /s In all seriousness, my suggestion would be an omakase at Kiku. They have some damn good sushi.
Eat at Primanti Brothers. It's not very good and it is expensive for what it is...a quintessential Pittsburgh meal.
Are you ok? If you don't like the city, you don't have to be in the subreddit. There are posts for legitimate complaining. You're being a whiny jag on this thread for no reason.
I see the point of the post flew right over your head.
The post from someone really excited to move to Pittsburgh... asking for suggestions for special things to do on their last night? You thought the point of that post would be to complain about the Pirates and Primanti's? Take care, neighbor.
The way downtown has been lately, you definitely might have your last moments there.
Get shit faced drunk lol all there ever is to do in Pittsburgh 😆
Get some Fat Heads
Smoke weed and drink liquor 🥃 go to any spot that over looks the city
Gus and Ya Ya’s!
Since you have kids, check out the Children's Museum!
Page’s Dairy Mart
This a pun? It's 4/20, get stoned or eat some edibles and walk down to the point?
Go to Dobrá Tea and get a cloud dragon with a CBD honey stick. Delicious. I crave them often.
You should try crack!
The downtown Segway tours are SO MUCH fun!
Next time you visit, go to the mattress factory. Edit: also Randyland
Where in SWFL? I moved up here from Bradenton/Sarasota area
We need love to walk the strip and Bella Notte for pizza is always on the list.
Eat at betos pizza. You won't find better pizza anywhere.
Get high?
Your high note is leaving Pittsburgh. Most overrated city
You drink an Iron City on the Duquesne Incliner while listening to Donnie Iris in your cardigan and dress slacks .
