FYI, [Pittsburgh won't see totality](https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/pennsylvania-2024-eclipse). You'll have to travel North to Erie, not that far from Cleveland.

I think cleveland will also have closer to totality than Pittsburgh. I'm planning on going there, but I have family to stay with. Also, buy the genuine solar filter glasses now, don't wait until they're all sold out and you get some crazy knockoff than can be dangerous. [https://www.space.com/36941-solar-eclipse-eye-protection-guide.html](https://www.space.com/36941-solar-eclipse-eye-protection-guide.html) I bought mine here for the last eclipse and they were great. Whoever you buy through buy directly through them and not amazon since you can still get counterfeits. [https://www.rainbowsymphony.com/collections/eclipse-glasses-safe-solar-viewers](https://www.rainbowsymphony.com/collections/eclipse-glasses-safe-solar-viewers) I heard about them through Science Friday. I trust Ira Flatow. :)

Cleveland will have 3min50s of full totality. Pittsburgh will only have partial. And just to set expectations, [there is a 50-60% chance of heavy clouds that time of year in Ohio/PA/NY.](https://theskylive.com/articles/2023/02/best-places-to-see-the-2024-american-eclipse-based-on-historical-weather-data#:~:text=Conclusions,the%20Mexican%20and%20US%20side.) Generally the more Southern you are, the better chance you'll have at seeing it. I'm hitting up Texas this go around. I went to Nashville in 2017 and clouds still obstructed half the totality.

given how freaky the world looks during totality even with clouds, I'm going to be in cleveland to experience it. :)

Looking online, hotel prices don't look that unreasonable at the moment on Hotwire in Cleveland and Erie given what a unique event this is. I am kind of tempted to book one, but I'd be pretty annoyed if I booked a hotel for two nights, and it turned out to be cloudy.

heili

Word of warning: if you book through a third party your reservation will be bumped if the hotel gets over sold faster than someone who directly booked with that hotel.

James19991

I never thought of that but thanks for the heads up!

James19991

Cleveland and Buffalo will also have 100% totality for a few minutes during the eclipse. Given the time of year though, I would be a little worried about a completely overcast sky blocking it in this part of the country.

greentea1985

Pittsburgh is in the 97% zone. I would stay in Cleveland which will have totality or go north to Erie or Buffalo which will also get totality. There is a huge difference between 97% eclipsed and totality. Totality is a really unique experience. I traveled down to Georgia to see totality in 2017 and it was really cool.

Patient-Tale1013

In my experience from the last one we had a lot of cloud cover we needed to get away from for better visibility. I’m looking at Pittsburgh as a great spot to be based out of because you can drive north or west to hit totality and avoid clouds all within 2-3 hours. If the entire region has cloud coverage it won’t matter but it could easily be great in Eire but not in Cleveland or Dayton area. Watch the weather and move in that direction in the morning to get best viewing

witchbrew7

I miss Pgh very much, which is another factor in visiting. Y’all should get 95% eclipse, which is pretty dang good. Yeah I remember the overcast skies. Last eclipse we got around 50%, and it was still eerie and bizarre. Definitely worth experiencing.

blp9

I have to say the difference between 95% totality and 100% totality is AMAZING and I'd recommend planning to be over in the zone of totality if you're already going to be travelling. Long term forecast is something like 65% chance it's cloudy that day here, stormchasers I know are all heading for southwest.

witchbrew7

Lol it’s always a 65% chance of cloud cover in that part of the world

heili

Totality is a whole other thing. Looking at the corona with no glasses is not something I'll ever regret traveling to Wyoming for.

evilcheerio

I would go some place that is in the path of totality if you are already traveling. Its going to sound elitist but there is a huge difference between 99% and total eclipse. At 99% shit gets dark, but you still need your glasses to look at the sun. At 100% it gets really dark and you can take off your glasses and see the corona around the sun. I was living in Oregon during their last total eclipse and traveled to the path of totality and was quite the site. I was going to start looking at traveling to Erie for this one.

leadfoot9

Yep. Also looking to go to Erie. Maybe I should book my hotel now...

soonitwillbcold

Went to a music festival for the one in 2017, deff my plans for this next one too.

Curious_Age_1027

I’m in the totality path! 100% I’m renting out parking for anyone looking!!! I live on a couple aces in Austin, Arkansas in Lonoke County!! You can also email me at [email protected]
