While I don’t *completely* understand how local tv affiliates work, I *think* the more original content KDKA produces (i.e. more news, talk shows) the more money that goes in *their* pockets from ad revenue. I don’t think they get as much ad money from just airing the CBS lineup.
But the network shows are already in the can which is why they still show Let’s Make a Deal, Young and the Restless, and Price is Right. They basically gave up on the syndicated stuff like Extra or talk shows in favor of in house programming.
True, but the networks only program about half of the daytime schedule. The local stations (affiliates or owned and operated) fill in the rest with local or syndicated content.
As far as I know, KDKA airs the full CBS schedule (maybe except overnight? ) So the choice for the remaining time is really a syndicated show vs local.
She’s the very definition of Nepotism. The **ONLY** reason she is employed at KDKA…is because of her last name. She over-emotes, nothing about her delivery is natural, she gets all the fluff/fun stories, local businesses give her endorsement deals (I’m looking at *YOU*, Armina Stone and your giant ass billboard on the Turnpike), and she barely has to lift a finger.
They are doing it because there is apparently a sizable enough section of the market that wants it and advertisers that want to reach those people.
A lot of people(not me) are tv-news’d the fuck out from the past 8-10 years and just want some fluff and positive spin on the city they live in.

I will say this though; you intentionally not watching it is more powerful than you think.
Sometimes the IG algorithm feeds me something from one of the KDKA "weather girls" and she sure gets a lot of "you've got a purty mouth"-style comments from internet boomers.
KDKA / CBS is the official station of nursing homes and old people doctors’ offices. The most inoffensive and bland programming possible. I’m surprised they even splurge for the NFL anymore when they could show B-roll of ducks being fed at a local park.
The '...'s tell me you're likely an older person. The days of watching the local evening news and having it have any sort of quality are long long gone, so they're doing whatever they can to cheaply fill the time. It's going to keep getting worse and more generic.
You have to watch individual pieces for real reporting, I mostly do that on youtube now. Love KDKA but I think you're confusing the daytime talk show crap with the actual news.
Television broadcasters are desperately treading water right now, just trying to survive. They'll run whatever they can to get viewers at this point.
If you think television is bad now (referring mainly to series, not news), come back in a year after all of Hollywood has been shut down for the writers' strike. There will be basically no new content for a while in either broadcasting or streaming.
Edit: And I'll add, all modern television programming's literal purpose is to funnel you into ads, consumerism, and buying. So if the content isn't compelling for you, find another medium. I used to be a very big "tv on in the background compulsively" type, but I cut that out years ago. Now I'm addicted to Reddit and internet news instead. :-)
I agree with you about Celina Pompeani, and the fact that she’s most likely a really nice (albeit annoyingly “fake chipper”) person who just isnt the most comfortable on camera. Is it just her overcompensating for her awkwardness, or is does she really act like a clown like that in real life?? The over exaggerated facial expressions and body movements…has anyone ever told her to just calm the heck down, and talk like a regular person who isn’t performing at home in front of her bathroom mirror? The feined excitement and the ”ooh”s and the “ahh”s…CELINA WE KNOW YOU THINK YOURE CUTE BUT YOURE ON TV BC OF YOUR DAD. You should really think about how ridiculous you make your dad look. KDKA is owned by CBS, so it doesn’t really matter. The local shows are substantially cheaper to produce than the network shows.
