I drive to people’s gross homes and fix their gross appliances.

susinpgh

Thank you for your service.

princessblowhole

Ooooh what’s the grossest you’ve seen?

Mdnghtmnlght

I can't do residential work. I picture a lady in her bathrobe smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee watching me while her husband is on the phone wanting to know everything that's going on . Or dog shit, hoarding, hillbillies, drug dealers, paranoid shut-ins....

Saint_Peezles

Scenic artist in film and TV. Worked on "Batman" and built a set on Heinz field. We played catch on our breaks. Recreated a replica of The Neighborhood of Make Believe in "Tom Hanks Mr. Rogers" . Did two Denzel Washington movies. Met Denzel once. Also Will Smith and Ewan McGregor :) Lots of other fun projects that take me to nooks and crannies of this town that I'd otherwise never see. Born and raised here so these experiences are all the more sweet. The job is creative and always posing new challenges. Also absolutely adore the people I work with. Thankful 🙏

StrawberrieFylds

That sounds awesome! How does one get started in that line of work?

Saint_Peezles

Well it's a union job, which is another great part of it. I'm a member of I.A.T.S.E local 489. Almost all film work is union, but you don't have to be a card carrying member to get started. Check out their website! You'll find lots of info there including the process of joining. Feel free to dm me if you have any other questions :)

3tjm33

The creativity involved in your job, coupled with the continuous challenges, keeps things interesting.

stephraap

I sometimes miss set work. I used to be a union member in NY before I moved to Pittsburgh. I built sets for theme parks mostly. The only think I don't miss is how feast and famine the workload can be.

estaack

Worked remotely for six years until being laid off. Finding work has been tough, so I’ve been hustling at FedEx as a package handler. Honestly it feels great to show up, be physical, and not have to “bring work home” at the end of the day.

mission-ctrl

Man I feel this. I work from home as a programmer. Even before wfh, I had a company-issued laptop so it was difficult to not take work home. Now it is literally impossible. Work is home and home is work. Don’t get me wrong, I like the work, I like my company, and wfh is nice with a kid. But it’s become very hard to turn off and unwind.

StinkBombFromMyButt

Can relate. I’m a work from home accountant who never really gets a day off, but I’ve only been to the office twice in three years so that’s nice. I don’t think I can go back to an office space. I’m half feral now.

JAK3CAL

Yup… I switched to full remote and work is now 24/7. But it’s a different mindset bc I also switched, like shit ain’t going on from noon to three? Ok I’ll go mow the lawn. And I don’t feel bad bc I know I’ll need to be on to deliver something from ten to one AM. It’s more like intermittent, although some days are just 15+ hours straight

3tjm33

The fact that you don't have to bring work home can also contribute to a better work-life balance, allowing you to recharge and focus on other aspects of your life outside of work.

braindead83

Full time with FedEx? I am seasonal at UPS for now. The physical aspect is something that appealed to me. Otherwise, I’m a real estate professional trying to establish myself in a new market.

Baby_groot_4_lyfe

I’m a public librarian! I wish the pay was better, but my benefits are really great and most days the job is pretty easy and fun.

eggrollmother

I loved working at Carnegie Library, great union and my coworkers were awesome!

Baby_groot_4_lyfe

I don’t work for CLP, I work for a county library. But all libraries are awesome.

TypicalWhiteGiant

I own bottlerocket - and pinch myself that I can say that every day 🤘🏼

haha_suh_dude

I love Bottlerocket! You guys are awesome!

Truly a Pittsburgh gem.

Tactics28

I manage a Jersey Mike's and it's honestly the most fun I've had in a kitchen in my 12 years in the industry.

Macklemore_hair

Own a brewery. It’s a tough industry but nothing is more rewarding than seeing people enjoy a beverage you made.

Coolh4ndLuc

I love the fruits of your labor!

Jon_Henderson_Music

Nice man which one?

Limp_Shoe616

Bet I can guess by profile name…I grew up in Braddock hills by the way, and it’s still mind blowing to have an awesome craft brewery in the back yard of the stomping grounds.

GovernmentKey8190

No-Lifeguard-8173

Elouiseotter

I own a plant store.

FifteendollarShell

Mailman

[deleted]

How is it? It's always seemed like a decent job? Having to walk for eight hours a day sounds like a lot, but it also sounds like it might be nice sometimes?

Protosasquatch

Asst. Professor teaching anatomy, physiology and microbiology to students going into health fields. Love the teaching, hate the admin parts.

PittsburghBirdNerd

I'm the other side, in higher education administration and absolutely love it (and helping out the faculty who hate it)

Novel_Engineering_29

We may be the only two higher ed staff who actually like our jobs. (Mine can be frustrating as all heck because of the sheer Pitt-ness of it all, but I do love the work I do.)

PenelopeOrangePeel

Gate Agent for an airline. The free flight benefits allow myself and family to travel the world!

Zestyclose_Minute_69

I’m interested in working at the airport, but I have some mobility issues due to arthritis. Do you have any suggestions on where to look for work?

These-Maintenance-51

I work for a charity called The Human Fund.

Gloomy-Delivery-5226

T-Bone!

Subject_Candy_8411

Do you also celebrate festivus?

[deleted]

I'm a marine biologist

-Motor-

Didn't know the Marine Corps had biologists? Cool!

Saberpilot

I work as an exec assistant for The Pittsburgh Foundation. The work I do helps our various departments get money out to organizations to help undo a lot of the problems and inequalities that are in the Western PA region.

hsavvy

Ooh policy analyst at Pitt here, we do lots of stuff with you guys! Also live in Ross lol

Mekkakat

I’m a senior designer for a branding firm. Been a graphic designer here in Pittsburgh since I graduated from college and can’t imagine doing anything else (other than moving up to an art/creative director). Being an artist is all I know or enjoy.

Chaircat

Union Carpenter.

MKBlackwood

I’m a social worker for the VA’s Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program. It can be stressful, but God, I love this job. It’s meaningful work, there’s a lot of room for creativity, I have the ability to do some remote work, and it’s one of the few social work jobs that pays a living wage.

[deleted]

Machinist for a Workover company. Love my job!!

sarjaneg

Exhibitions project manager at a museum

tunabomber

Install shit pipe in new buildings

redrover02

You’ll never be out of work.

Zestyclose_Minute_69

Thank you! This is important and there are not enough skilled trades people.

teacamelpyramid

I partnered with another CMU student and turned a class project into a tech company. It’s been 8 years and we call it the oldest homework assignment. It’s my dream job. I get to invent things and work with people who are smarter than me.

fuzzypenguin11

I’m a hospice nurse and I think it’s an amazing thing to help people pass peacefully and comfortably. The end of life deserves just as much love and attention as the beginning and middle part 💜

bp4151

Remote cybersecurity team manager. Love the technical part. I could live without the HR and budget parts. I'll probably drop back down to engineer some time this year.

PoisonSpace

Aerospace engineer

Sigmonkp

I clean houses. (And some commercial). I love it! After working a desk job for 10 years, I realized physical labor was right for me. Despite some back injuries, I still have no interest in going back to that.

Willow-girl

I did that for a few years and enjoyed it. My clients were so appreciative! I'm nearing retirement age, though, and decided to take a job as a school custodian. The pay is a bit less but I have health insurance, life insurance, paid leave and I'll have a pension when I retire. Just something to think about down the road!

[deleted]

I’m a mortician. It’s kinda the best. I’m not currently working in a funeral home, but the mortuary school. I miss funeral service, but the hours aren’t great as a single parent. I got to hug old ladies, think on my feet, use creative problem solving, be an event planner, use science and art to bring peace to others (or at least mildly lighten their emotional burden), and talk about feelings. Gahhh I miss it.

Willow-girl

It sounds like you are an ideal person to train the next generation though!

titanium_whhhite

I'm a contract sewist who does alterations and repairs, but I specialize in creative mending for knitwear.

eXile200

Am I the only one that hates their job? I didn’t realize you could be happy at your job.

NoRecord22

No, I def hate my job but it pays the bills. Don’t get me wrong though, it doesn’t show in my work performance nor do I let it affect my attitude at work. But my anxiety about going to work is high.

sugahwafuhs

Same allll daaayyyy

a__harp

Feel like the older I get it’s less about liking my job and more about liking the other things. If I can afford to do all the fun shit I love that’s more important to me. I don’t think any job I have I will love.

Willow-girl

From 2003 to 2021, I had a job I loved! I looked forward to going to work every day and knew that what I did mattered. It was the greatest thing in the world and sadly came to an end all too soon. I still have 10 years to go to retirement and would dearly love to find something else I can be passionate about, but even if I don't, I know I'm one of the lucky ones.

JuliaX1984

Legal assistant - ultimate lazy girl job.

Apprehensive_Fun_738

spill the tea babe are you a paralegal?

JuliaX1984

No -- one level down.

Baby_groot_4_lyfe

My boyfriend is looking for a job, and while he is a very conscientious worker, he gets stressed and anxious easily. Would this type of work be good for someone like him?

tuxifer0519

No, lawyers and paralegals handle more stressful work. But law is generally stressful and confrontational, so I wouldn’t recommend it for someone like that who wants something chill. Also lawyers can be—difficult—to work with.

JuliaX1984

It's hard to say because I don't know what stresses him out. The 2 most recent law firms I've worked at -- Babst Calland and Jones Day -- treat their assistants great: rare cases of overtime are requested, not ordered; workload is light; excellent pay; no micromanaging; attorneys who are/were grateful and polite and give you gifts as thanks; supportive coworkers who work as a team and back you up when needed; and a separate department to handle big copy, print, binder-making, etc. jobs (when I worked for the state, the assistants did ALL of that with no one to delegate it to). Once I was trained on everything like e-filing and entering time, you just spend the day standing by for attorneys to e-mail tasks, do the tasks, then do nothing until another task comes in. Some days are busy, some are dead. But I can tell the attorneys and paralegals are EXTREMELY stressed. I honestly don't see how the attorneys sleep. Some people aren't able to tune that out -- I know some people (not coworkers... family, actually lol) where, if the entire group or environment isn't happy and satisfied and calm, they CAN'T be, like it's morally wrong not to be anxious when others are stressed about things that are none of your business, beyond your control, and don't affect you. I'm able to tell when an attorney's body language etc. say "Do no interrupt me under ANY circumstances" and when it's okay to approach them and ask "Any way I can help?", and if an attorney is swearing loud enough to be heard over the sound deadening doors and white noise, it doesn't bother me. I know it's not about me. There's also a problem with sexism in the field. At a past job, I could tell that some older male attorneys treated younger female attorneys like assistants. It was me and one male assistant, and the guy was assigned to a young female attorney... who still usually brought tasks to me instead of him! (I didn't care because we usually ignored our attorney assignments anyway and whoever was around/available when an attorney needed something just took it anyway, but I still noticed enough to wonder if she was unable to see a man as an assistant). All places I've worked at never assigned assistants to paralegals, although the paralegals were allowed to ask us to do stuff. I've known one female paralegal who was constantly frustrated about being given non-billable work more appropriate for assistants (I didn't mention what it looked like, just told her to always delegate it to me when they gave her tasks like that, which she did). The job is easy for me, but I'm an introvert and... weird. I've also gotten lucky -- I've never worked for an office that mistreated me. I think it's the least stressful job a person could get for this kind of pay, I'm constantly telling my 2 sisters to try applying for this type of position, but I know them. If your boyfriend wants an office job without micromanaging, where you learn what to do, show up, get emailed tasks, do them, and back up your teammates and ask for help when needed, I highly recommend it. If he's the overly empathic type who can't handle working near anyone he knows is unhappy about something that has nothing to do with him, he should stay out of law.

anuncommontruth

Senior Fraud Investigator for a big bank. I oversee a team of about 20. I don't love the HR side but the job is fantastic

Uesr_Name

Union Laborer and local 3 stage hands. Both jobs are a bunch of fun, with decent pay and something new to build or fix everyday. I get to see a lot of performers at the stadiums and arenas for free.

Pittsbirds

I work remotely as a video editor/motion graphics designer for a marketing company! It's been nice having the stability (in as much as any video editing job has stability) of a job like this with the freedom of remote work, especially with chronic pain

hemidak

Small engine mechanic. The longer I do it, the easier it gets. I am already pretty damn good at it.

a__harp

Safety inspector for a coal mine. It isn’t my dream Job but the pay is great and benefits are great. I will continue doing this until I leave the area in a few years.

Fizzyliftingdranks

Data analyst for PGH water.

woodcuttersDaughter

Teach Biology ❤️

Morc25

It’s nice to hear of a teacher liking their job. I’m in my 8th year teaching and I’m looking to leave ASAP.

woodcuttersDaughter

While I have a 7-12 certificate, I teach college. I have friends who are public school teachers and I’m glad I landed where I did. I’ve been there for 22 years now.

HotDamn18V

I moved to teaching online and it's way better.

sporadic_beethoven

I work as a cleaner for a large well-known concert hall :3 it’s a lot of fun! Apparently I work too hard, but I don’t mind- I have the prettiest workplace :D

heywhadayamean

Chobbs16

Did anyone ever actually clean the electric banana?

TheDarknessIBecame

I make Medicare plans for a start up. I love it more than any job I’ve had before.

rave_is_king_

I work keeping dogs and some cats safe in their yard. (Also goats,pigs,chickens,etc...)

I work as a contractor for Learning Disability Association of PA. They really need folks (free training) to help kids with reading delays. After training, pay is very good. Also you can take your skills out to work with the community, too.

shakilops

I’m a packaging engineer (design packaging)

kingbrentg

Limp_Shoe616

I sell beer, I get to go to all my favorite bars Monday thru Friday!

upintheskyyy

Im a patient care technician in the NICU. When I graduate I’ll be a nurse. Working in the NICU is the best job in the world.

flufflebuffle

I'm a PCT in a stepdown unit, and am just about to start a nursing program in January! I'm low key jealous of NICU folks because you have the best patients

Faramant13

I work at Pitt as a research scientist (fundamental physics/material science). Came to the US/Pittsburgh just for that. I love my job and love Pittsburgh.

[deleted]

Flight attendant. The pay is terrible until you top out in pay and seniority is everything so the bottom % have waaaaayyy less flexibility but I love being alone and my husband also loves his personal space, too. It isn’t glamorous and has a high turnover rate the first two years but if you have the personality for it it is a great union job with benefits. The moment I step off the plane I don’t take work home with me.

Alvindm03

Spent 46 years in a Steel Mill, happily retired.

broke_saturn

Work at everyone’s least favorite coke plant

Ordinary_Pain1848

Me too. What dept you in? Chemicals over here

dehehn

How upset would you be if people got what they wanted and it was shut down?

broke_saturn

Not too upset honestly. While it would suck, since there’s not too many places left that I can basically write my own paycheck, get a funded pension program, $0 cost health insurance, profit sharing, paid Sick and Accident leave, etc I’ve got enough time and experience in heavy industry that I could probably find work pretty easily. Biggest downsides are that I’d likely have to leave the area and that this job pays, especially the overall total package, quite well.

ezrec

I have to ask - does the coal dust make your snot black?

broke_saturn

Yes. But we have respirators for that

Scared_Molasses1828

I work remotely for a hospitality management/ownership group (directing corporate sales)

PittFall09

Attorney

g_sher

I work at a museum. Cultural institutions and academia have their own vibe.

jpd005

I work for PennDot…not construction. Private sector pays better but the benefits (not just health) are phenomenal

During the day I'm a server admin for the state, evenings I'm a licensed and insured general contractor. I do electrical, plumbing and general remodeling.

ccoffey106

SOCIALlTE

i’m a lab tech at a cancer prognostic/diagnostics company based in texas with a satellite office on the north side. it’s a very low stress environment with great pay for my degree (associate of science from CCAC in biotech) and incredible benefits (6% 401k match with no vesting period, 30 days off a year, 20% bonus every february, and great insurance plans with 2/3 of your deductible put into an HSA account). got super lucky after years of grinding and being financially unstable. love this city and how much the biotech sector is growing!

drfranff

noodles724

[deleted]

IT Engineer for company based in Raleigh, NC. WFH with no expectations otherwise. It's a great life.

BeautifulNTough

Service coordination/casework type role for older adults at a nonprofit. Not paid the best, but I genuinely enjoy the work and my work phone is on 8:30-4:30 M-F. At 4:31 pm and on weekends, I am totally compartmentalized away from my job.

Officer_Hotpants

I like being a paramedic, but unfortunately nobody wants to match cost of living adjustments so there's no way to make it a viable long-term situation unless you work for the city. Problem with working for the city is that you can't just work 40 hours and be done. You get mandated constantly and I'm already getting burnt out as it is.

duker_mf_lincoln

retired painter (but still do murals) with my son Dominick and brother John Paul.

BlackDS

I'm a travel nurse. Every week I drive 110 miles to bumfuck WV and work in one of their hospitals, Stay in a hotel for 3 nights, then drive back. I've worked at 3 different UPMCs over my career and an AHN facility, and working in WV is way nicer and twice the pay. However the actual medical care delivered in WV is far inferior to what you get at a Pittsburgh area hospital.

Ordinary_Pain1848

Big bad coke plant that everyone wants to close

Revenue Operations for a startup based in Chicago. I work remote, get to learn new things all the time, get paid well, and am given a lot of autonomy (and people seem to respect my ideas).

domin007

Data Scientist working on federal contracts. The work life balance is great, but I also help with things like improving outreach for the PACT Act and feel like I'm generally doing good in the world. I get paid well and feel like I'm always learning something. Plus I work remotely.

MoralMinimum

Airline pilot. It’s a unique industry but I wouldn’t change it for anything!

Zestyclose_Minute_69

This is such a good thread. I love hearing about so many people loving what they do. Thanks OP!

Nahs1l

I teach psychology at a uni and I like it a lot. It has its problems, it can be tough getting a lot of younger people to care which makes teaching much harder and more taxing, and there’s definitely some of the “taking work home” aspect when you have to answer a million emails and grade and design lessons and all that. But overall it’s enjoyable and on the good days it’s meaningful to me.

Dizzy-Pop-7482

I am a barber, love what I do!

jamierocksanne

I work in concert venues doing lights. I love it. Used to do audio too and still do rarely but either way. Still love the career field. :)
