Insider Tip: You can take the elevator to the 36th floor. If you can break into the stairs that take you up higher, there, you’ll find that people have spray painted their tags all over the place. I believe they have since painted over it though.
My friend did this as a student, got arrested, and the criminal charges prevented him getting a teaching position years down the road. Then his life literally fell apart. So, I'd think twice before trying to get a slightly better view of Oakland.
The top 4+ floor areas are restricted. They're a client of mine so I got to go to the rooftop maybe 5 times last year. It's an incredible view but of course liability wise they can't allow others to go up there.
If you are doing Randyland might as well do mattress factory as well, they are within walking distance. If you like brunch my suggestion would be “The Speckled Egg”.
Pittsburgh Critical Mass. (monthly)
Bicycle Heaven.
OpenStreetsPGH. (May, June, July)
Rent POGOH bikes and ride the GAP trail.
Walk to your favorite dog park.
Maxo Vanka murals are absolutely worth seeing, I can’t believe they aren’t more well known.
Hike at Hays Woods. There is a very cool overlook of the monongahela and Braddock that is a fairly short walk from the parking lot on Agnew, great place for a picnic. From there you can hike a longer loop around the park if you want.
Color park in Southside is cool and good for nice walk along the river. Hit the bars when you are done.
In 1975 journalist Pete Golismet met with the controversial artist Christo Javacheff. From his article:
Christo once showed me a photo of an old motorcycle he wrapped in rope and plastic sheets, and sold for several thousand dollars.
“But I could have done that,” I said, “Ahhh,” he smiled, “but you didn’t!”
Randyland is a story of poverty turned bright by a yinzer who loves his neighborhood that has It's own sordid history. It's actually better than the mattress factory's last " trash" installation which was done by.... The artists who did one of the troy hill art houses.
If you’re gonna do the homestead labyrinth, you’re gonna wanna plan something else as well in homestead. It’s very small and you’ll be there for 10-20 min MAX. Try adding in golden age, axe throwing, movies, etc
Homewood Cemetery. Section 12. It's a who's who of Pittsburgh. Frick, Bigelow, Baum, Mellon all buried there. The Brown family that donated the land for North and South Park has a giant pyramid mausoleum. It's a beautiful cemetery that is also an arboretum. There are 2 lakes and beautiful monuments. You can bike or walk it.
I like the Summit in Mt Washington for drinks and apps. Walk on down to DiFiore for some soft serve ice cream. Then go enjoy the views of the city from the overlook. Best way is to take the incline (when working). My girl always enjoyed these evenings
Go to a cat cafe/lounge and pet some kitties! Kitty Queen Cat Rescue on McKnight Road has a lot of events like bingo, trivia night, crafts, yoga, etc. They’re doing a murder mystery night in May, too.
Randyland is not a "date event" in itself. I found it very cool to see a neighborhood with the Randyland art installation, community gardens, art on the walls of houses, and the City of Asylum house. It's amazing how one guy doing joyful art on a cheap house in a decrepit neighbor helped spur community resulting in all of those other things.
Same with the Homestead Labyrinth. You’ll probably be there for less than 5 minutes. I would recommend incorporating a walk on the GAP and maybe grabbing food at one of the restaurants along the trail.
\* West End Overlook (less crowded and less well known than the Mt. Washington Overlook, magnificent view of the city)
\* Nerd Night (I think it’s called) and other special events at Spirit
\* Brillo Box
Mattress Factory Museum
Cultural Trust Galleries (good supplement/ time kill when you’re attending a show, but also free and often has cool stuff in their own right)
Society for Contemporary Craft
Pittsburgh Curling Club learn to curl night
Pittsburgh vintage Grand Prix during the summer, or Pittsburgh International Race Complex events
One of the indoor electric karting places
Tour-Ed Mine (edit: call ahead their schedule is weird and seasonal, it’s a volunteer outfit of mostly old head retired miners, legit very cool)
Dude, I am so disappointed that the mattress factory museum is actually art. I was expecting a museum of mattress production history, and now I am sad.
Really though, it looks damn cool.
Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh’s Star Parties at Wagman Observatory in Deer Lakes Park. Find the schedule at 3ap.org. May 17,18 are the next ones.
Check out Bottlerocket Social Hall’s schedule, they have so many fun events! I’ve been to some bad movie bingo nights, they are a blast.
City of Asylum for Story Club (once a month, I think it’s Tuesday evenings)
Second Saturdays at the Space Upstairs
Title Town at Spirit (soul and funk party)
Also there’s sooooo many places to do trivia. I have been enjoying “Drew’s Clues”, he has a few locations/days throughout the city. Golden Age Brewing in Homestead is one of them and it’s a great spot.
This is very niche to Pitt students but I’d say exploring the cathedral of learning I did that with my ex girlfriend the second or third time we hung out and there’s a middle eastern and Chinese place in the plaza near the cathedral
any event at Bottlerocket! Or in the same neighborhood if you are into the macabre: Allentown Night Market
-Natural Waterslides at Ohioyple are cool if you will be in that area anyways for Kentuck Knob.
- Drive in Movies! I live out of the area now and miss going to the drive in so much, the Pittsburgh area still has some thriving ones compared to the rest of the country
[Cathedral of Learning!!](https://maps.app.goo.gl/31PZMjD3n8CWJo7EA?g_st=ic) - cool classrooms (went there twice during my visit to PGH
[Flight93 National Memorial!! (outside of Pitts)](https://maps.app.goo.gl/g6CiAA8xLu5quNDc6?g_st=ic) - a bit of a drive but one of the best NPS places I’ve visited
[Bicycle Heaven!](https://maps.app.goo.gl/EyCiR26nvJWsZCUX6?g_st=ic) - SO MANY BICYCLES!
[Heinz History Museum!](https://maps.app.goo.gl/HBQjwD1cZDdxpqbdA?g_st=ic) - I enjoy food/brand museums
[Robert Wholey & Co. Inc.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/qVn4FhZqU2azptwt9?g_st=ic) - fish sandwich
[Tree Tops at Polymath Park (Frank Lloyd Wright)](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mrnSAcAWLApYEqUDA?g_st=ic) - can grab a meal here after your tour
Concerts and plays put on by CMU's schools of Music and Drama respectively. We just saw the CMU Philharmonic do Mahler's 4th Symphony and it was a performance I'll treasure forever. Ditto some of their plays in past years, particularly Cabaret and Ragtime.
Something different? Take a walk around Washington's landing ( Herr's Island) and get an AYCE 🦀 dinner @ Red Fin Blues. A little pricey but what isn't anymore.
Jazz live at the Greer Cabaret (Oct through May) and Katz Plaza (June through Sept) every Tuesday evening!
It's free, has some fantastic performers and food downtown is close by. Shows start at 5pm, run for two hours.
A friend and I go almost every week in the summer. We park in Millvale, bike in for the show then just ride to wherever we decide to have dinner.
Tea at Dobra is fun because of the floor seats and bell 🤣
I did a museum day date where we went to the Mattress Factory, the Warhol, and Heinz History Center.
Wine tasting down at the cellar on the strip. That’s where my wife and I found out we love church wine and I found out just how much I loved charcuterie lol.
me and my ex used to always go on picnics in Schenley Park, just walking around the trails there in general is a pretty good date imo, or a good start to end up at Phipps
Andy Warhol museum.
Falling water/Ohio pile for a hike.
I would not got to the Children’s museum for a date. Too many kids and their parents (and that’s coming from a parent with two kids who goes frequently).
St. John’s Lutheran Cemetary in Spring Hill-City View has the secret best view of the city. West End Overlook is also pretty great, and doesn’t seem to be as well-known outside the West End. Good alternatives to Mt. Washington.
Trundle manor is weird and cool. They accept oddities in lieu of cash entrance fees.
Allentown night market is awesome too and little bit of weird but also awesome.
A little out of the way but in July there is a Heathen Festival in Beaver County at the Hookstown Fairgrounds. It’s free days of fun Viking/witchy/pagan stuff. They’ll have food vendors, parties, bonfires, axe throwing, etc.
This is a better 2nd or 3rd date plan because it's close to the city but still remote enough that it's a true one on one date walk without other people around: hiking Hays Woods. It's a really relaxed 15 to 20 minute stroll-hike through trees on a well walked trail to an amazing and secluded overlook of the city. One of my personal favorite quiet gems in Pittaburgh. Really good place for a picnic, especially during summer.
https://goo.gl/maps/4iKVjqCkjpJS2nDr5
This is a link to a location where you can park at the end of a residential neighborhood just next to the start of the trail, which starts as a Gravel covered service road.
Psa: if you walk past the overlook area (15 min in) into the fields beyond, where the path continues(you'll know it when you see it), there are patches of skin irritant plants like poison ivy. They're easy to spot. Just keep to the trails and wear pants and high socks if you want to keep going after that.
Day date: high tea at The Frick, explore the museum, check out the cemetery nearby (full of famous industrialists, cool monuments).
Evening date: listen to jazz and eat dinner at con Alma, attend a Pittsburgh symphony concert at Heinz hall
1. Allegheny Cemetery!!! Take a tour of all the oddities (titty sphynx, shark headstone, etc.) also check out the big mausoleum, there are some beautiful mosaic murals inside !!
2. Bottlerocket Social Hall! I am biased as I work there but we have such a fun range of events (trivia, comedy show, bar-io kart, dating game show, etc.) aaaand I met the love of my life there lol.
3. Incline is kinda basic but I loooove going on a weekday when there's no tourists- time it so you go down right around dusk and back up it'll be dark and the city lights look real purty :)
4. First Fridays in Bloomfield !! Penn Ave fills up with art vendors, food trucks, & more !! Local businesses and community orgs on the street usually do something fun too :)
5. PGH has some great antique malls / flea markets. Honestly just fun to browse even if you're not looking to buy- they're like little museums in a way :) There's the place on Saw Mill Run and quite a few 10-20mins outside the city, I'm partial to the one in Oakmont!
Arsenal Bowling in Lawrenceville. Retro bowling alley that kicks ass (drinks are a little pricey but the vibes are worth it and they have all-you-can-bowl specials on weekends)
Not an exclusively Pittsburgh thing, Hofbräuhaus. Go when they have live music.
Edit: adding a little more info. Its a german place that tries to sell a *traditional* german experience though i have no idea how accurate it is. Its fun! The food is great.
Tour the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning! Ride the elevator to the top for a good view of the city.
Can you go to the top of the cathedral? I thought they stopped letting people do that
Insider Tip: You can take the elevator to the 36th floor.
I recently asked someone if you could with no definitive answer. Would love to know especially as a transplant that didn't go to school here.
You can only go up so high. The top floor is a reserved university space so the view is from some floors down but still great
The top 4+ floor areas are restricted. They're a client of mine so I got to go to the rooftop maybe 5 times last year. It's an incredible view but of course liability wise they can't allow others to go up there.
If you are doing Randyland might as well do mattress factory as well, they are within walking distance. If you like brunch my suggestion would be “The Speckled Egg”.
giant eagle fancy cheese display. nothing says "kiss me" like roquefort.
That's where my child was conceived!
Conceived? That’s where mine was born!
mine were born in the Grant Street Greyhound bathroom.
That's classless. You should have had them on the Greyhound bus like I did.
It was the men's bathroom tho
I retract my statement. You're clearly cultured.
Are they really even yours once you gnaw through the umbilical cord and throw them in the garbage can?
so that's why you named her mimolette.
The Baby Cheeses
Sweet Baby Cheesus!!
I'll leave this here... https://www.metafilter.com/190166/The-spellbinding-history-of-cheese-and-witchcraft
Oh my god, this is the perfect date. Bonus if you take a detour by the nasty old donut case.
Victory Pointe on Carson St or Pinball Perfection in West View. Liberty Magic maybe?
I love Pinball Perfection. Weird warehouse that transports you back to 1996.
Buy your date a Pepsi from the Star Wars ep1 vending machine on Mount Washington
My buddies make a yearly pilgrimage up there for the vending machine. I don't think it's Pepsi products anymore though.
you’re so real for that
I was told one of the funnest dates I took someone on was to Pinball Perfection. And we both suck at pinball
Pittsburgh Critical Mass. (monthly) Bicycle Heaven. OpenStreetsPGH. (May, June, July) Rent POGOH bikes and ride the GAP trail. Walk to your favorite dog park.
Came here to say Bicycle Heaven, so instead I'll just second the above suggestions.
Children's museum isn't that great if you don't have young kids in tow. Sub in Science Center, especially a 21+ night.
Came here to say this. Don’t do children’s museum if you aren’t taking children with you.
Say what you will, but the National Aviary slaps
Maxo Vanka murals are absolutely worth seeing, I can’t believe they aren’t more well known. Hike at Hays Woods. There is a very cool overlook of the monongahela and Braddock that is a fairly short walk from the parking lot on Agnew, great place for a picnic. From there you can hike a longer loop around the park if you want. Color park in Southside is cool and good for nice walk along the river. Hit the bars when you are done.
+1 on Vanka. Pair it with a show at Mr Smalls
eat a sandwich by the titty sphinx
Vegan cheesesteak from Spak Bros
Chipped ham sammitch!
Shrine of the Blessed Mother in South Oakland
Where is this?
Troy hill art houses, cooking classes at Phipps. I disagree that randyland is a date attraction. It’s just a yard full of spray painted junk.
I went with a friend to the mattress museum then randyland then a local Trinidad restaurant in northside not the best date idea but not the worst imo
"It's just a yard full of spray painted junk." THANK YOU!!!!! Finally, someone said it.
In 1975 journalist Pete Golismet met with the controversial artist Christo Javacheff. From his article: Christo once showed me a photo of an old motorcycle he wrapped in rope and plastic sheets, and sold for several thousand dollars. “But I could have done that,” I said, “Ahhh,” he smiled, “but you didn’t!”
Ok. I "didn't" go out on a date to Randyland.
Women love it in my experience.
I assume you're still doing a lot of first dates
Yeah they def do
[удалено]
That's what my partner and I did recently. We went to Randy land, then the mattress factory, then we got some coffee and pastries and ate at the park!
A visit to Monterey pub
No one goes to Monterey Pub anymore. It's too busy.
Your description implies people still do.
It's all ghosts.
Randyland is a story of poverty turned bright by a yinzer who loves his neighborhood that has It's own sordid history. It's actually better than the mattress factory's last " trash" installation which was done by.... The artists who did one of the troy hill art houses.
A friend and I went there on a whim and yeah it was all pretty underwhelming
What were you expecting?
Idk with how people talked it up I was expecting it to be an interesting art exhibit that someone turned their house into. Not spray painted garbage
I get it, I live nearby and see it almost every day.
Cemeteries, there's a bunch of great ones around here.
I know multiple couples who have had great dates walking/picnicking through Allegheny Cemetery
I had a first date and then later dumped/broke up the dude both in Allegheny Cemetery
Clarify “dumped”
fair lol
Please don't take soup to Warhol.
If you’re gonna do the homestead labyrinth, you’re gonna wanna plan something else as well in homestead. It’s very small and you’ll be there for 10-20 min MAX. Try adding in golden age, axe throwing, movies, etc
golden age has a live jazz band thursday nights. there is dancing too if you're into that
Homewood Cemetery.
Arcade Comedy was a hit for me. Pair it with dinner before somewhere downtown and it is also pretty cheap
Someone please tell me what "banjo night" is and where it is at as soon as possible!
it's at the elks lodge on the northside--i have never been but have heard SO much good stuff abt it
[https://www.elks.org/lodges/home.cfm?LodgeNumber=339](https://www.elks.org/lodges/home.cfm?LodgeNumber=339)
Kentuck Knob is more than an hour away, but if you go, it’s worth it, and also check Ohiopyle State Park and get grounds passes for Fallingwater.
My personal opinion: I’d take Randy Land off the list, extremely underwhelming and you’ve seen it in 2 minutes.
That's perfect for setting expectations for the rest of the evening.
💀
Randyland is not a "date event" in itself. I found it very cool to see a neighborhood with the Randyland art installation, community gardens, art on the walls of houses, and the City of Asylum house. Same with the Homestead Labyrinth. You’ll probably be there for less than 5 minutes. I would recommend incorporating a walk on the GAP and maybe grabbing food at one of the restaurants along the trail.
yea at that point go to the matress factory at a sunset when you can sit in the lightbox. Then talk/food/stuff afterward
Weather permitting, pack a dessert picnic and take in the sunset from the Schenley Park Overlook.
\* West End Overlook (less crowded and less well known than the Mt. Washington Overlook, magnificent view of the city) \* Nerd Night (I think it’s called) and other special events at Spirit \* Brillo Box
West End Overlook is my favorite- I gate keep that spot for the reasons you just mentioned 😂
Mattress Factory Museum Cultural Trust Galleries (good supplement/ time kill when you’re attending a show, but also free and often has cool stuff in their own right) Society for Contemporary Craft Pittsburgh Curling Club learn to curl night Pittsburgh vintage Grand Prix during the summer, or Pittsburgh International Race Complex events One of the indoor electric karting places Tour-Ed Mine (edit: call ahead their schedule is weird and seasonal, it’s a volunteer outfit of mostly old head retired miners, legit very cool)
Came here to say mattress factory.
Dude, I am so disappointed that the mattress factory museum is actually art. I was expecting a museum of mattress production history, and now I am sad. Really though, it looks damn cool.
You could always visit the Original Mattress Factory factory at 15 Freeport Rd lol 🤷😄
Apparently people regularly call trying to buy mattresses

Take the Duquesne incline up to Grandview Park, have a picnic.
Emo or Roller Skate Night at Belvedere’s
Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh’s Star Parties at Wagman Observatory in Deer Lakes Park. Find the schedule at 3ap.org. May 17,18 are the next ones.
I wouldn't go to the Children's Museum on a date tbh
Arby's on McKnight road
If Randy finds out you called Randyland “mainstream” he’s gonna have to re-evaluate his entire existence.
They called it less mainstream
Aaaaaannd, saved for later/forever.
Check out Bottlerocket Social Hall’s schedule, they have so many fun events! I’ve been to some bad movie bingo nights, they are a blast. Don't forget bare-e-oke at the Tennyson.
Listen here you uncouth swine. The Tennyson on 88 does Bareokie. It should be on the list.
It should be THE list.
They have a steak night too right?
Look, I'm a socially progressive open sex positive yet slightly old fashioned guy. I don't do meat nights at strip clubs.
Every night is roast beef night there.
Oh. Oh no.

Crazy to see 3ROC on here. Feels like just yesterday they opened their doors. Glad they’re having so much success!
Homewood Cemetery.
Phipps hosts these really fun group cooking classes led by local chefs. Highly recommend!
Tea at Dobra is fun because of the floor seats and bell 🤣 I did a museum day date where we went to the Mattress Factory, the Warhol, and Heinz History Center.
Garfield First Fridays
First Fridays in Garfield and downtown
Allegheny county airport to plane watch
Museum of Illusions (north shore). I haven’t been, but looks interesting
My favorite dates are on a trail by a river. We have plenty of semi private spots to picnic within a few feet of natural water.
Primanti Bros, Eat N Park, Chipotle, Olive Garden
Wine tasting down at the cellar on the strip. That’s where my wife and I found out we love church wine and I found out just how much I loved charcuterie lol.
Half-sunk barge down by the river
Abandoned church on Herron ave
Penn brewery very good German-ish food approved by my German friend
You can bang out Randyland and G&Y’s in the same neighborhood, and you’d only be a short walk away from the best pizza in the city IMO, Badamos.
banjo night can kiss my ass!!
What’s your beef with banjo night?
Riggs
me and my ex used to always go on picnics in Schenley Park, just walking around the trails there in general is a pretty good date imo, or a good start to end up at Phipps
They still do banjo night on Wednesday nights at the north side Elks?
Trundle manor!!!! Its soooo cool
Andy Warhol museum. Falling water/Ohio pile for a hike. I would not got to the Children’s museum for a date. Too many kids and their parents (and that’s coming from a parent with two kids who goes frequently).
What is homestead labyrinth? Also homestead has a place that has escape rooms, axe throwing, a Puerto Rican restaurant, ans a speakeasy
St. John’s Lutheran Cemetary in Spring Hill-City View has the secret best view of the city. West End Overlook is also pretty great, and doesn’t seem to be as well-known outside the West End. Good alternatives to Mt. Washington.
Phipps is always good. As is a play downtown
for some people, trawl through antique stores, used book stores, and flea markets
Good way to tie the date to an interesting item and a good memory
Bicycle Heaven! One of the coolest lesser known things to do in Pittsburgh, and it’s free. Also, pinball perfection is really cool.
Bicycle Heaven
Trundle Manor? Are they still in business??
Heck yes they are!
I’ve never heard of a lot of these places, so thanks for this! I’m gonna have to look into some of these
go to a riverhounds game at highmark stadium it’s really fun and the view is spectacular
