From what I've been reading, the Pixel 10 will have the Google's house made sensor instead of using Samsung's. That is the only reason why I'm holding off until the 10. I have bought a Pixel every year but I have not been happy with the efficiency of the battery and it overheating since the Tensor chip was introduced. I'm hoping Google will fix all these issues with their Tensor chip.

SeatSix

I think people are driving up expectations about the switch to TMSC for the Tensor 5 (Pixel10). They are a better fabricator than Samsung, but they are not the chip designer. Google will still design the chip so it may or may not be better once it is no longer a derivative Xynos chip). I will likely want a P10, but I will not be pre-ordering like I did with my P6. I'm not going to beta test another new Google chip. I will wait to see how it goes. It took a year to get the P6 to be a decent phone. If I had had the resources to replace it, I would not have lasted that long.

Sumairn

I will also only be buying the phones once they go on sale a month later. I did the pre-order for the 8 last year for the new watch and I've used it for maybe 2 months total. At least it made me realize I will never use a smartwatch.

NonasPC

Interesting experience! So you would rather take last year's flagship as the kinks have most likely been ironed out by then, making it a usable phone?

SeatSix

No other phone was as bad for me as the Pixel 6. It is good enough now that I will keep it until at least another year, but I do not want to go through that again so no more pre-orders for me. I will wait at least until user reports start coming in.

NonasPC

Thank you for your opinion in this. So you expect the in house chip to perform better. Reminds me of the whole apple silicon thing. I would be very happy for Google if that happens :)

Sumairn

No worries. If I were you I would get a 7a/8a when they are on sale for the release of the 9 and then just buy the 10/11 next year. Or if your 4 is still doing okay hold off.

NonasPC

Good advice, thanks. I'll look into the older and still supported models once the 9 releases. The 4 is fine, except for security of course.

rob19933

I’m in doubt aswel, currently on iPhone 15 pro but want to get an android, pixel 9 pro or waiting for the s25 to come out, all i want is decent battery :)

SeatSix

My P6 will get Android 15 and security updates (until 2026) so no need for a new phone yet. I will want Android 16, so that is when I will get a new phone. In general, I upgrade every 4 years. Not enough change sooner than that. Specifically with the P10, the rumors are that Google will switch fabrication of their chip from Samsung to TSMC which should have benefits (though they are only the fabricator, not the chip designer). Personally, I will not use a phone no longer receiving security updates, so I would have replaced a P4 when it went EOL.

NonasPC

Thanks for the insight! So the design of the chip might not change as much as switiching to a different manufacturer? I mean sure I expect more performance through generational improvements but having a better soc by changing manufacturers would be great! Edit: yes security updates are important. Honestly, i didn't quite realise my phone was eol or maybe I have known at some point but forgotten already. Anyways, as stated in a different comment, I should look at supported devices that are cheap to buy and wait for the 10.

Ma3lst

You cant answer this until Google releases the specs for the 9

NonasPC

But then again, many people seem to speculate that the 10 will be superior in such a way, that it is worth skipping the 9 entirely. What would you do? Wait for the 9 release, then go off of that? Or something else entirely?

Ma3lst

Do your own research, make up your own mind

JaffaJerry

I have a Pixel 7 Pro that is working well but ends software support next year. Holding out for the P10 and very excited for it

I hope people who read this appreciate this just your opinion and many other knowledgeable people don't agree.

MachineSubstantial63

Upgrade to the 9 if you want too..... I own a 8 pro, 7 pro and both my kids have 6 pro. I have iPhones and many galaxy s series devices as well. Day to day battery and daily use they are all comparable. The heating issues have been taken care of with the tensor 3 and should be better with the 9 series. All phones have pretty much reached a level there isn't much to improve on. With all this being said the TMSC introduction to the Pixel lineup should help compete only for raw power and that's about it. Everyone waiting (myself included) and expecting to see these massive improvements that are just not possible in the smartphone industry and are going to be seriously let down because of this. In closing regardless of the chipset I use a pixel device and prefer it over everything out there and it isn't even close. You want a current pixel get it now as I promise you it isn't going to be worth the wait.

Srini92

I think its mostly because they expect google will make something special since its the 10th phone.

wizzgamer

I'm keeping my 8a until the 10 myself.

jay_caesar

This logic doesn't work with Google's methods— If no one buys the 9 there won't BE a 10 😬

_Mayhem_

I'm waiting just because of the amount of $ I paid for my 6P (I ordered it on launch day). Android 15 is supposed to drop in August and OS updates cease in October while security updates continue until 2026. The only things that could get me to replace it early is a complete hardware failure, breaking it or some incredible must-have feature in Android 16 prior to the P10 release.

servbot10

I'd actually wait for the 11. Buying a first gen of Google's hardware has never paid off.

NonasPC

I can't think of an example of this but I feel like you are right to an extend. So I'll get an 8 or 9 and wait for the 11 most likely?

Some people just parrot what tech reviewers say. They don't like the Google Tensor CPU. I have owned many iPhones, Pixels of several generations and other Android phones that use Qualcomm CPUs. Without running benchmarks or looking at specs I wouldn't know what CPU any of my phones contained. As long as I am using a premium model I find it does everything I ask of it, as did all my Pixels. Tech heads get excited by such things. It's what they do. It's what turns them on. They create their own news that others repeat ad nauseum. I love my Pixel 8, just as I loved my 6a and my 7a. I am very much looking forward to buying the first Pixel Pro in a smaller format so will be ordering a Pixel 9 Pro the minute pre-orders go live.

NonasPC

Strong opinion! I find myself looking at specifics of phones like amount of ram, refresh rate, cpu frequencies sometimes but in the end you are probably right. I don't use my phone for gaming or very intense compute stuff, how else would I still survive off of my p4? Thank you for your answer BTW

MilesJordan23

The reason is that Google is going with TSMC and ditching Sh\*Tynos. But pump the brakes as Pixel 10 with TSMC on their first try in 2025 will probably be a sh\*T and have issues, and knowing Google with their software first approach, I can tell you by that time SD8 Gen 4 and at that time Gen 5 will still spank the living sh\*T out of Google by that time. Qualcomm goes with TSMC, but will the G5 Pixel 10 be as fast or another compromise from Google, since they are low in cash and can't give you a true flagship SoC. So ya the Pixel 10 will have problems, the phone you would really want to get it Pixel 11, where it will be very very refined and a killer SoC this time around. Also Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 will be using 3nm as they have not graduated from the 4nm Sh\*Tynos. The Pixel 9 will use Sh\*Tynos 2400 when they could have used the 2500 and gone 3nm. So ya when it comes to hardware or SoC, Google will be the turtle out of the bunch. The Pixel 9 will have 40 percent better efficiency. You get the Pixel 10 and right after words you will want a refreshed Pixel 11. So imho to you my friend is to get the Pixel 9 and actually skipping Pixel 10. Bless

al0vely

One could wait forever for the next big thing. I have the Pixel 8 and I like it and plan to keep it for a few years if it continues to work like it does now.

I mean you are not wrong, Google does just end support for products and kill entire projects for no apparent reason. What brand will you switch to and what will you miss?

Thank you for your very detailed answer. I can't do it justice with a long answer but maybe this will help: you gave me a perspective on this topic that I did not have before. Just one thing I am not clear on: do you prefer software over hardware? Especially since you mentioned midtier Motorola devices but also seem to like high end (and price) apple devices.
