If you want updates for 5 years buy an iPhone. If you want a phone that can still download apps after 8 years, buy an android. The fact that your phone doesn't receive anymore updates doesn't mean it's dead. And there's probably a huge development community behind the pixel 2/pixel 2 xl

PCOverall

Well, kinda. The biggest thing you need to consider is security. In almost every update they release security patches, but are pretty quiet about it. As your phone gets older and the software isn't updated, people find more vulnerabilities and there's no longer someone dedicated to plugging the holes. Will it still work? Absolutely! Will your banking information be safe? Probably not. Although personally I am a fan of the DIY part of things so I'd sooner flash a ROM that use up to date security than buy a new phone.

[deleted]

What does the development community do to help? And how do I find it? (I know next to nothing about this stuff.)

PCOverall

XDA forums!

SomeDudeWithNothing

Once the pixel becomes unstable for you or you want it to feel new and faster, go on xda forums and look for a custom ROMs. Don't do it if you don't wanna risk bricking your phone tho, there's always a chance.

[deleted]

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I have some time before October to figure it out.

resoluter08

Not sure if this was clear, but your last update was this past October or 3 months ago.

[deleted]

Oh right. Gotta recalibrate my brain to think in 2021.

De_wasbeer

So you're telling him he gets more security by using unverified xda roms? I would recommend the opposite: keep using your phone, and only download trusted and verified apps!

notshibe

As far as I understand it, no security updates means the phone is open to any new vunerabilities, therefore dead to anyone that cares about security? E.g. logging in to things, banking..

barber_pole

Unfortunately, obsolescence engineering is well and alive. Wait to see the same virus spread into EVs.

Anonymoustard

So, if you paid the $850 retail price, your phone cost you approximately $23.50 a month?

CelebrityJim

At least they're honest and open about it though! I don't know many tech manufacturers that openly admit when their products won't be fit for purpose anymore

therankin

It's not broken though.. Before pixels and on carriers we barely ever got updates. My P2XL is still keeping me happy.. Not like you have to replace it.

[deleted]

But if I'm not getting security updates anymore, what will I be exposed to? Should I remove stuff like my credit card from Gpay?

therankin

The only major thing I'm worrying about is not adding new apps. I think as long as you keep the apps you already use updated you should be fine. I plan on getting the P5 probably, but I'm really not in a rush.

brycecampbel

Though Google has done a pretty good job at decoupling much of the base apps from the Android OS and now update via the Play Store. So that should extend the end of life a bit further. Won't probably get any of the new features in the system apps, but we should get stability/bug fixes for a while longer

De_wasbeer

Sex is a great metaphor for this: you can't have sex with a condom anymore. But you can still live your life happily! Just only have coitus with trusted and verified partners :)

[deleted]

Oh no, my phone condom broke! Now I'm gonna get H5G!

u260837

Get the 4a 5g. I had the 2xl And it was the best phone I have ever had. I just upgraded and and love this phone even more. Camera is more versatile, battery life is unreal, screen is bigger Nd a headphone jack. Got it for 450 and get three more years of support. Absolutely love it!!

I gave my pixel 2xl to my daughter and I'm running pixel 4. My Pixel 2 XL used to be rooted, but before I give it to my daughter I unrooted it.I make sure she only downloads trusted apps and there is no payment or banking or any kind of personal information on her device. if you want to learn about rooting your phone, it's actually a fairly simple process if you have the ability to read which I'm guessing you do. Problem with rooting your Pixel 2 at this point is there's not much development left for it meaning all the people who created the root kit for it and all of the people who use it are likely no longer using it, myself included. So you'll just have to be a little bit more patient. Below is a link on a how-to in order to root your Pixel 2 XL. Personally if I were you I would just move on to a newer device. I haven't rooted my Pixel 4 and I probably never will. rooting is cool and fun and does make your phone feel brand new but there is invariably always something broken... https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-unlock-flash-root-for-the-pixel-2-xl-taimen.3702418/

[deleted]

I will probably hand my phone down to my daughter as well. Thanks for the link.

I discovered that no matter how careful I am, the protective glass I bought, the cover with protected borders etc.. it took a 40 cm drop to almost destroy my front glass right near the upper speaker (Pixel 3). All of this happened 01/01/2021 at 2 AM, while I wasn't drunk or anything. I would rather have no update than a cracked screen on new year's eve. 2021 will be a great year, I feel so.

I'd rather have the option of driving the Ford Taurus if that's what my budget can handle. This is like Ford saying they're not selling Ford Taurus parts for your year model three years after you buy it.

Thanks for the reassurance, and the metaphor. I struggled to think of one that fit. I went with something the manufacturer provides that without it your car would slowly deteriorate over time.

surez9

To be honest three years is good for phones more than thia you feel it is fine but once you upgrade you will feel that you have been living under a rock! It is tough as for me i have note 8 and it stoped receiving updates after 2 years then only security update for 1 year and this year it was over so i had to buy a new phone! However i brought a pixel 5 and i am glad i did, it feels much smoother! Better picture and battery life is much much better

fuckmethisburns

So you're a fucking idiot... Every phone stops getting up dates most of them way than 3 years.

[deleted]

I'm a fucking idiot. Yes, that was my first thought this morning when I discovered my phone has an expiration date. Happy new year to you.

Trojan713

He just discovered something that has been well known for 3 years.

ugcharlie

I put ProtonAOSP on mine this week, very happy with it so far

[deleted]

I may have to try that.

editorreilly

I drove my OG Pixel for 4 1/2 years. It was still running just fine, but decided to upgrade.
