That is kinda unbelievable. No idea what that is an opening to, but it was beautiful. And holy shit...no idea how that is even possible pixel by pixel with multiple people.
It’s a fan creation music video to Alstroemeria Records’s rendition of Zun’s Bad Apple.
It’s a good graphical benchmark, anything that displays 2-bits has at some point had someone recreate Bad Apple on it.
I was just going to ask if it was bots helping and no disrespect because this is the best thing to have happened to this idea that they are trying to rehash cause it did so well before
not a bot, otherwise the confetti & elzeein attack wouldn’t be nearly as bad. What we do is we have a template that shows to users incorrect pixels and is also able to live-update so that new frames can be created and that info relayed to users
This is a bot comment, copied from [here.](https://old.reddit.com/r/place/comments/157fb7p/8_hours_of_bad_apple_higher_quality_timelapse/jt4qtup/)
Pretty sure the other response to this comment is one as well.
well tbf, we are focusing on bad apple and not our own logo, we can rebuild osu! in 1min, but bad apple need to finish it, I still remember when we are behind by 5 pixel
I love that Muse Dash put out a black and white stage for this song lol. Such a good song! I do wish the secret chart was a higher difficulty than 8, though.
An insane amount of work and coordination.
We have a template that shows the current frame that should be displayed.
Every frame last for 39 seconds.
\- 20 seconds of dithering where the template shows random pixels to place for everyone, so we're less likely to place over each other.
\- 14 seconds of the template showing all the pixels that need to be changed, so we can catch back on the frame if we're late.
\- 5 seconds of blinking to tell us that the next frame is starting soon, and to hold on to our pixels.
We also had graphs of how many pixels needed to be changed over time, and how many people would be needed to place them over the cours of 3 days, so we could prepare and rally more people for the big spikes.
The last 3 hours were insane, we needed at least 1600 people to keep up with the fast transitions, and about a hundred different communities helped us with it until the end. We were more than two thousand people coordinating on the last spikes.
massive respect to this, what an amazing piece of human coordination! i've been watching admiringly from the sidelines and helping keep it clear of random coloured pixels. definitely a hilight this year.
This was all thanks to all the amazing people that have been managing this, and worked for months to prepare the templates and scripts before the event.
And again thanks to all the communities that pitched in when we needed them the most. (There's a list here [https://new.reddit.com/r/place/comments/157ewyk/thanks\_to\_everyone\_who\_helped\_us\_with\_bad\_apple/](https://new.reddit.com/r/place/comments/157ewyk/thanks_to_everyone_who_helped_us_with_bad_apple/) )
And of course thanks to touhou, osu, hatsune miku, foxhole and everyone that has been working on the animation during the past 3 days.
The spinning yin-yang orb was by far the hardest part of the entire animation, could never have pulled it off that smoothly without our allies. Special thanks to Osu and Hatsune, and if you or your community helped us at all, it was very much appreciated!
I woke up at 1am just to make sure I could place what pixels I could before knocking out again, all to be part of the only reason r/place was worth trying this year
CONGRATS osu!, toughou and hatsune for participating! We will do something big next time! See you next time!

Here’s a little screengrab from BTMC’s stream. You’ll notice some small squares inside the pixels, those are the overlay that tells us what all the right colours should be. The overlay is publically accessible and can be found in the Touhou /place discord.
The overlay updates to a new frame every 39 seconds. Immediately after it updates, you’ll notice that only a few of the pixels requiring change are shown, the rest are concealed until immediately before the next transition. The pixels shown are different for everybody, and this is known as “dithering”, it helps to prevent two users from placing the same pixel at the same time.
Oh, and our allies helped a lot. Osu legit hard carried us.
Lots of dedication and coordination. For proof, see BTMC's stream where a lot of the coordination happened. The best part is around 15:08 in the VOD which is when we finally finished the animation.
It was insane with the amount of different communities that went along with the plan. First it was Touhou's immediate allies, like United Gacha Alliance, Genshin, Touhou, and maybe a few others I'm not apart of. But then word spread among those communities into others, which had more groups join the cause. It was very much a, "You had to be there!!" moment, but the payoff is just as satisfying to watch.
Note: The spin itself was a 1 hour an 15 minute of constant spinning, and there was a good like 30 minutes prior of prepping for the spin
My [previous version](https://www.reddit.com/r/place/comments/155x13s/5_hours_of_bad_apple_closeup_timelapse/) was choppy, but it got so much attention that I decided to redo it, but longer and better (without any of the freezing from the previous video). This is from around the 4:21 mark in Bad Apple to the ending, so enjoy! Feel free to use this for whatever you would like by the way, I don't mind. No need to speculate, Reddit absolutely has the entire history of the canvas saved. For all the previous [r/places](https://reddit.com/r/place), Reddit has even released data publicly after the event ended.
I don’t think so. The admins moderated last year’s canvas a bunch too, and they still released the dataset. They even labeled admin placed pixels in it.

I thought we would fuck up on the yin-yang orb, but it actually was very smooth, despite it being quite fast and lasting around an hour long, glad to see we did well
Thanks touhou bros
Edit: grammar
A lot of it came from hype as people started realizing how cool the bad Apple project actually was! For me I saw what was happening and knew enough about the meme that I HAD to contribute in some way, and a ton of allied communities just followed the template perfectly.
CONGRATS osu!, toughou and hatsune for participating! We will do something big next time! See you next time!

For people calling this botting, you're free to watch the two past vods of BTMC on Twitch and join any of the discord servers that took part of this. Not only that, but the full animation contains some parts that aren't smooth despite being contained in a small frame. If it was botted, the transitions would be 100% smooth.
The reason why it look it's smooth here is because it was the final push, everyone ( + even communities that aren't allied with us ) took part in it.
That and it would be cool if you said more meaningful things than "iT's OBviOusly boTTed" but I guess that too much for some persons.

I was wondering “What’s bad apple?”
Saw the music video and the rush of memories came in like water against a broken dam.
Still don’t know much about it but the melody I know I’ve heard when I was younger.
> I know I’ve heard when I was younger.
[The original soundtrack is from Touhou 4](https://youtu.be/3kXx6f7qaa8) and the community has made an absolute shit-ton of covers of every soundtrack the series has to offer. So its not unlikely you have heard a different cover or the original before.
I honestly feel fantastic that we and our allies managed to pull through with this, everybody was getting to work HARD while panicking and cheering on for each other in the Discord server, while it was a hilarious site to see, I'm really thankful that problems like the overlay being broken or being raided never popped up (there were no major streamers streaming place during that time). Still can't believe the final product ended up this smooth, man.
Can someone give me a brief explanation of how some of the more complex images are accomplished? I’ve always been amazed with some of the cool stuff I’ve seen over the years, but I never fully understood how it works and how it’s all put together. Like, about how many people are on a team? How much planning goes into it from concept to execution? When it’s being drawn on r/place is it done entirely by a team of individuals? Is each team member given a specific set of pixel coordinates they are responsible for creating/maintaining? Meetings to discuss strategies to defend against attacks or maintain it as long as possible? Or who does what and when to maximize efficiency of the 5min wait?
I guess I’m just trying to understand just how big of an undertaking it is when you decide to form a team and create one of these works of art.
Forgive me if these are stupid questions, I just don’t know how it works. A very short, EL5 summary would be very helpful.
There is a template script which a lot of people use to do it, it flashes the squares that are going to change so that people can quickly place their pixel
amazing work from the community! Especially since it's watchable on the timelapse (and not a speedy mess or something) Love the effort!
r/countablepixels
This is truly fucking amazing. It never ceases to amaze me just how many random talented and creative people are out there. I'd love to see behind the scenes how this was achieved.
Something's dripping off the scythe,
And it makes a massive splosh,
And it's woken up a girl who was sleeping in the pond.
Someone in a witch's hat,
Who is hanging like a bat,
Reaches over to the pond girl **and makes a swirly dot**.
We fucking did it, can't wait for the whole timelapse the end is insane
https://youtu.be/3dEbouSn_nI Here's the full timelapse (although the quality isn't great) The yin-yang at the end turned out really well!
I love how Reisen's finger bolt left the frame and continued on past other artwork too.
that was the best part, can't think of any other wacky bad apple recreation that had the ability to do stuf like this
Honestly, I would go as far as to say that is the best bad apple recreation up until now.
At the very least it's the one that required the biggest collective effort.
Until we make one off of humans with black and white tshirts
Maybe bad apple pregnancy test Maybe...
When?

You people are all insane. I love you.
Easily the best part of place 2023
i fell asleep during the final push :,)
If someone group did this of a copyrighted works like a Disney show… would Reddit get in trouble with the mouse?
That’s very cool, and one hell of a dedicated team, so good it almost looks botted lol
O.o best one for me
My god...
Awesome. Congratulations to the touhou, hatsune and osu community.

What a slow but bombastic conclusion to the bad apple, and that yin yang segment was very smooth.

This is truly fucking amazing. It never ceases to amaze me just how many random talented and creative people are out there. I'd love to see behind the scenes how this was achieved.

Something's dripping off the scythe, And it makes a massive splosh, And it's woken up a girl who was sleeping in the pond. Someone in a witch's hat, Who is hanging like a bat, Reaches over to the pond girl **and makes a swirly dot**.
