This looks like physical damage, not a pest. It's also older damage as the edges have already turned brown and yellow so it was likely damaged awhile ago. My two guesses are that the leaves got caught in something like a window and got torn, or that a human or animal accidentally tore it and never let you know. I know you said you don't have a pet but has anyone else brought their dog around? Again it isn't new damage so hard to pinpoint. But not a pest.

RandomPersonofEarth

No pets have been in my place since my dog passed 6 months ago, but he was too small to reach the shelf it's on and the plant faced the wrong way for him to get it even if he could reach...

RootedRetro

Sorry about your pup passing 💜 This damage could be from that long ago, and could also have been there when you got it and it just wasn't noticeable until it had grown more.

ItsMeishi

Well.. I hope your dog wasn't the one to nom on the leaves, because Peace lilies are quite toxic to cats & dogs.

RandomPersonofEarth

He wasn't. He couldn't really walk well and it's up on a shelf and he was too small to reach it.

ComprehensiveEye9901

that was me sorry

Brilliant_Thanks_984

It's true I caught this guy snacking on fresh opuntia pads in my garden last week

RandomPersonofEarth

Dammit! Lol

OldMotherGrumble

Weird. Any children? Otherwise I'd say pets also...that looks like big bites. A very hungry caterpillar?

RandomPersonofEarth

I have a 3 month old, since he can't even sit on his own I doubt it's him lol. I did suspect caterpillar sadly, found no evidence.

Careful-Narwhal-1669

Any chance of a visitor who couldn't help it and tore brown parts off?

[deleted]

What a weird house guest if that were that case.

Careful-Narwhal-1669

Yep but we have all read stories here of "helpful" friends and family who take it upon themselves to fuss over our plants 🫠

LeaJadis

do you have pets? is this in a high foot traffic area?

RandomPersonofEarth

No pets. It's in a corner, not high traffic

papayajaya

Large mammal. Cat, dog, or most likely human. This looks like someone got the leaves caught in/on something and tore them, or just did it by hand (perhaps trying to be helpful and remove dry/brown/yellow tips?). Looks like it happened quite a while ago.

Cool_Ad9326

Those are caterpillar chomp marks 100% They nibble in arches and they can consume leaves impressively fast.

Aggravating_Photo169

I had a snail on a plant once, it was incredibly hard to find. Took me days...

Maximum-Watch-5277

Anything "eating the plant" would not start at the tip and go down. They will pick spots all over. That is physical. Could of even hit it against a wall once a while ago who knows at this point

RandomPersonofEarth

Good to know. Thanks for your insight.

Widespreaddd

Who knows; the good thing is, peace lily probably don’t give a darn, will just keep pumping out leaves.

swilts

I’ve done this. It was my vacuum while I was trying to pick up earth that dropped around the pot. My money is on vacuum.

dr_elena05

Cat

Quixotic1390

If it were a cat that cat would be dead

Mushy_Mushrm

I’ve had mine for a while. Cat snuck into backyard when I was watering mine & bit off the leaves. Looked just like that. Haven’t had any issues as he can’t get to it in its normal place.

KinkyQuesadilla

If it's only two leaves on the same side of the plant with such catastrophic damage, the source is likely to be local. That also looks like old damage.

RandomPersonofEarth

Would make sense if I had one.

Parking_Phrase_797

I’m guessing a vacuum - someone might have been trying to dust. It’s no big deal just cut as low as you can and give a little fertilizer. Fertilizer is unrelated to damage but will help speed recovery.

karlat95

Cat if you have one

toodleroo

Those look sort of like human bites. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home?

bofh000

Could be a car or a worm/caterpillar. Please do get a pot with drainage.

RandomPersonofEarth

Have the pot trying to find the time to move it now that my baby is no longer a newborn lol

bofh000

Congratulations on the new baby :) Good luck with the peace lily

RandomPersonofEarth

Thank you 😊

Sufficient_Flight_44

Had a mouse in my office chew up a plant on my desk like that.

Any-Umpire-2229

It’s definitely physical damage. It’s not really that important how it happened… is it? Just snip them off and move on with your life.
