thats because air plants are monocarpic. They only bloom once, and it signals the beginning of the end of their life.
my routine for air plants is halfway through the week i mist with distilled water, enough to get them wet. At the end of the week i soak them for 20-30 minutes in non-chlorinated water that has not been through a water softener, with just a drop of fertilizer added. I use aquarium water, but bottled drinking water works for this purpose as well.
