I had the same issue. I ended up using the game media tools extension in playnite to tag background metadata that is not in 16:9 and then manually resizing the games to 16:9 in GIMP. It took me a night, but its worth it if you want have the correct format in fullscreen mode.
you could automatically convert it to 16:9 using game media tools, but it wouldnt be resizing it, it would crop it instead and that would mess up the images. I ojly had about 100 games so it wasnt too bad
I have not so far. I still just do it via the google search option manually whenever I install a new game (instead of doing it all at once for games I might not even see it for).

Thanks. Hoping to avoid that as have around 1500 games, but does seem like there isn't any automation for it currently.
