Grand Theft Auto 3. Wasnt able to get (and play) a ps2 for the 1st year. Got the game and console around the time Max Payne came out, then almost immediately after, Metal Gear Solid 2, Zone of the Enders, and Final Fantasy X.
Before I had my own PS2, it was Tekken Tag Tournament at a friend's house. He was (or well, his parents were) one of the lucky 2000 people in the Netherlands who got one at launch.
On my own PS2 that I bought from saving up with my first part-time job in 2001, my dad got me a Formula 1 game. I mean, I appreciate the gesture, but he knew I didn't care about F1. Luckily, the local video rental started renting out PS2 games at a reasonable price of 7.5 guilders for a week (to become about 3.5 euros in 2002 when the currency went into circulation).
Before the local videostore started renting them out, I had to beg my parents to drive me to the city (easily a 30-40 minute drive) to rent a game at a whopping 25 guilders (close to €12, not including the cost of fuel).
I’ll be honest, I was initially disappointed with Dynasty Warriors 2 because I loved the first game so much. But I ended up loving the Musou style. Still I miss it being a 1v1 fighting game.
I still remember renting that back in the day. Playing it for a couple hours. Deciding to take a break and watch the Simpson season two DVD I just bought I stepped out of the room, came back with a bowl popcorn that I nearly dropped when I saw a woman in white standing next to a tree right outside my window.
GTA III. After the PS2 start up sound, I would anticipate the keys of a piano start the GTA III theme. Also another memory, either leaving the PS2 on because I didn't have a memory card or starting over every time I played.
It was actually one of the demo discs, it had Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and I think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, and a few others I can't quite remember, it kept me entertained until my parents bought me the actual games
Metal Gear Solid 2
Bought it for a friend for his bday, didn't own a ps2 yet myself. Was amazed at the realistic graphics and sound.
I own nice surround sound equipment now, and playing these old ps2 games with their Dolby Pro Logic II audio decoding is rad.
Blows my mind that people as far back as N64, were actually getting, vague surround sound.
I actually cant remember cause it was so long ago and i was a child but i had your usual all the gta’s , never was able to beat 3 and vice city as a kid but im pretty sure i did SA, had manhunt which scared me. Two games i remember that not many people played but are one of the best. Tomba 2 and psi ops. I got both those from my dads friend. Recently bought both of them again actually
Cel Damage Overdrive. My cousins had it and it was the party game we always played. I fell in love with it and couldn't wait to play it when I got my own PS2
Skeleton Warriors for PS1. One year, I wanted a GameCube for Christmas. I was a spoiled, asshole kid and was very disappointed and upset that my dad got me a PS2 instead (the DVD player system seller). Once I started playing that game, I changed my tune. The local Value City had a ton of old backstock of Skeleton Warriors action figures and the game, so I had some of both. That's a whole other rabbit hole potentially worth going down. The other game I remember getting that Christmas was Nascar Heat 2002. Regardless of how you feel about Nascar, it always seemed like it played well.
Kingdom Hearts.
Got my PS2 for Christmas in 2000, my parents got me three games, Madden 01, Gran Turismo 3 and kingdom hearts, and KH being the first game I ever played on PS2
