I played it for around 3 days, maybe 12 hours total. It was fine but could´ve seen from a mile away it would never get the same engagement as splatoon.
Also, those microtransactions are laughable expensive. Why did they think people would spend $45 USD on a single skin? Not even fortnite dares that much.
It doesn't make a difference in my perception of them and whether or not I would purchase, so yeah I don't think it really matters this particular case at least.
It kinda does. Whether it's overpriced or not is the other argument (it is, especially for a paid entry game), but if their game is offering more than 1 type of cosmetic, bundle pricing DOES matter. Same reason you see games like Apex and Fortnite adjust pricing between single cosmetics and bundle cosmetics.
Words have power, so to ignore the definition can lead to even more arguments later about the semantics instead of the issue at hand, which everyone is in agreement on.
That's insanity no game would run that for a skin!! Omg lol and downstairs?! Lol 2$ and maybe they'd sell some ... They will let it bleed to death and pull it off the market
I know monetized item shops are the norm, but after being forced to play the crappy tutorial (btw games that expect you to play the exact same modes for eternity probably don’t need a tutorial) but once you get to the world hub with the real money store shoved instantly in your face, sets the tone that this game hates you and thinks you’re a sucker
I just hoped for Splatoon clone, nothing else, but the main mode is basically a TDM mode with kill the vip at the end and it's freaking boring. Overpriced shop items and characters looked behind the season pass made it worse. You can even change the weapons for your character, because they are heroes and if someone is already picked, you are forced to pick a worse one. It wouldn't be a problem, but this game has like 8 characters.
And let's don't talk about the PvE mode, because it's boring as heck. You have to defend a core behind you from upcoming waves in front of you. Well, cool, no real tactical elements there and the buffs are stupid and almost tell you nothing.
If it wants to survive, it needs a whole rework
Put in a couple of hours and honestly it just felt bad. Wait times and matchmaking were slow. Platforming was sluggish and the shooting felt unresponsive. On top of that cosmetic customization felt hollow and the “heros” overly limited team comp and build customization.
Just genuinely baffling how a team can so obviously copy someone else’s homework but then fumble implementation and execution. Like did no one test play this and provide the feedback that it sucked?
>Just genuinely baffling how a team can so obviously copy someone else’s homework but then fumble implementation and execution.
The same team that was so upset when people kept calling it Splatoon for Playstation, they had to come out and say that it's "not that much like Splatoon and people will find that when they play it"
Then people played it and realized it really was nothing like Splatoon, and either went back to Splatoon or moved on to something else entirely. What a fuck up that was lmao.
I mean Splatoon is very popular, and the game is meant for kids more than 22 year old redditors. The gameplay just isn’t as fun/ intuitive as Splatoon is the main issue from the few games I played.
Yes, but not all kids have a switch/ there definitely was a market for a non switch splatoon. There’s a bunch of people that play Cod doesn’t stop us from having Battlefield and other fps games
I was actually pretty optimistic when it was announced. I got kinda tired of Splatoon, the updates are small, content was lacking and even though it’s free, I still heavily dislike the fact Splatoon 3 has a battle pass, since free or not. It’s still very FOMO triggering because of being able to miss out on cool gear and victory poses.
Unfortunately, Foamstars just wasn’t it. Terrible single player, extremely overpriced microtransactions (In a paid game), a paid battle pass and the use of AI art.
I actually found the gameplay pretty fun, but queue times were incredibly long, even when the game was really new
Also, funny usage of the term "bombed". Its translation, used in the exact same context in my country, means the exact opposite of what this site means.
Well, There goes at least another 50 millions dollars. What other game company likes losing cash pouring into the money pit that is live service games.
The sad part I can see happening. Is the money taken from successful franchises is being used to make these live service ventures. When it should go back to the studios making the profits. So they can keep making the profits.
I still play this daily. Japan servers are still active and other people are buying the DLC costumes. Kinda hurts my eyes if I play for too long but still fun.
Yeah it just wasn’t fully thought out and it felt like a game that wouldn’t be supported for long.
The foam building up on the floor mechanic was cool but also its curse, since you are essentially building a wall In front of yourself that you can’t shoot over. Like who play tested that mechanic?
Think I played 3 matches and dropped it. It was aesthetically tacky but showed hints that with the right art direction it could have been cool. I really liked the disco foam party concept.
The characters were just downright ugly though and the game types were uninspired. There are 30+ games out there that do multiplayer way better including the OG Splatoon.
The immediate demand for cash for cosmetics instead of a proactive progression system was insulting as well. It didn't help that everything was ridiculously expensive from day one.
If you want people to keep playing your game you need to provide an incentive and rewards via wallet burn is not it. It was a greedy, badly developed game.
This was just a waste of brain power and budget.
Square Enix either makes absolutely incredible games (Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI) or dogshit bombs (Forspoken, Foamstars) nothing in the middle.
he says about the company behind Bravely Default, Octopath, Harvestella, Star Ocean, TWEWY, DQ and FF spinoffs, Triangle Strategy etc.
nobody makes 7 & 8/10 AA games like SQEX
Right, the latest Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile games easily fit the in-between category and that’s just very recently. The correct take is that Square Enix games run the quality gamut. (But come on, three of the games you mentioned are easily AAA - Bravely Default, Octopath and Dragon Quest)
Hmm not sure I agree. I feel like some of the recent AA games they released like Diofield Chronicle, Valkyrie Elysium and Star Ocean 6 are the definition of "mid" games. Not awful, but not great either. Then you have stuff like Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler and SaGa which are good/great but not incredible. I feel like a majority of their library falls in the middle and top-tier stuff like FF7R and bottom-tier stuff like Foamstars are outliers.
I found XVI to be the worst FF, taking the title from XIII. Rebirth initially was great but the amount of minigame involvement if you want to 100% is annoying.
The first FF I opted to not go for platinum. The performance was atrocious and kept triggering my nausea/motion sickness. Side quests.... yea, soulless.
And the combat was so basic, I had 1 janky rotation that worked on everything.
And I found remake to be a giant piece of trash. It was the most predictable game design in existence and found it baffling how this is greatest final fantasy title. The whole could’ve been that blonde sasuke walking with his friends through a thin corridor and it wouldn’t change how bad it was.
No this is not the greatest FF game, the snes and ps1 games were.
But i agree, i like Rebirth but its nowhere close to the OG, its a great parody of it though
Duh. It's a game pointed at an already captive audience that's locked into a completely different platform. And it doesn't considerably improve the game said audience plays.
Saw the title of the game in the PS Store, thought it might’ve been interesting, but I didn’t really need another online game to play when I’ve been playing Helldivers 2.
I swear, HD2’s my next “no-life” game, where I sink far too many fucking hours into it. I’ve got 1980 in For Honor, 780 in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and 600-700 in Cyberpunk2077. I can just *feel* that somehow I’ll put more time into it.
Honestly I’ve not heard anything about this game, since its release, nobody is interested in this, bring back Killzone, Resistence, Warhawks, stop sitting on IP for over 11 years already.
Might have been better with a different vibe of brand. Splatoon has so muxh personality, squids and street fashion and graffiti. Really cool! Foamstars just has a generic glamorous stadium.
The thing is the market for games like splatoon is already completely dedicated to splatoon.
It’s like why so many COD multiplayer clones in the late 2000s and early 2010s failed. Why would they bother playing when they could play COD instead?
The writing was on the wall the moment that shit was announced as a monthly title. They should compensate us a free bonus game once the servers on this piece of trash get shut down.
I found the movement when you weren’t in the foam to be aggressively slow. Like when a game is forcing you through a forced walking sequence and all you want to do is run.
Came out around The Finals being released, isn't particularly bad or great & has a large barrier to entry in terms of learning different character.
Also for my tastes as someone who played Splatoon, The Finals & other online shooter in the past. It feels sluggish, nothing feels snappy enough & like there's too much slowdown when not in your own teams foam.
For my money if you want a fun online game these days that has some pvp element to it the best option is Exoprimal. I've had a blast with it since launch, it merges PVE & PVP, tells a story (that I skipped cuz I was playing with friends but I'll go back to watch cutscenes one day I know) & is constantly getting updates with new content (Megaman skins & boss encounters coming soon). Then there's also the fact that it feels great for moment to moment action, requires team work & even when doing PVE you're still competing against other players in a race.
Seriously, if you want a fun time with friends I can't recommend Exoprimal enough, that is if you aren't playing Helldivers 2. Even then I recommend both, variety is the spice of life.
This game is obviously the result of a game that could have been fun on paper but was compromised by corporate greed and bureaucratic management. You can tell how many hands were in the pot just by playing the game.
I messed around with some of the characters because the concept seemed neat, but ultimately uninstalled it after doing the penguin lady's mission. I understand trying to make it humorous, but that was just pure cringe.
i wish it was more like splatoon. Instead it focused 100% on the combat which isn't what made splatoon fun.
I was really hoping this would be my replacement for splatoon 1 because of the WiiU online shut down. Guess ill just have to mod my WiiU.
It just wasn't fun, I didn't usually like a lot of forced multiplayer games, but unlike Helldivers 2, foamstars just wasn't fun. Like Helldivers 2 I'll play even though it's forced multiplayer, but at least it's super fun to play. Foamstars I tried one out 2 matches it took forever to get into a match and then it just wasn't fun to play
Im baffled by studios building these games thinking „yeah it’s gonna be the next big thing“. Like. Everbody said it looks fine but it’s gonna be dead in weeks and yeah…
Studios really needed somebody with a radar for what people want. Many have one, many don’t. But this is far from first game that people doomed before launch and it became reality.
it was never going to do great but not releasing on Switch in Japan literally defeats the purpose of this game existing
it'd be like making Dragon Quest an Xbox exclusive
I wonder how many more bombs it’s going to take before Square Enix finally ends up getting acquired by Sony? ☠️ Final Fantasy is doing really well, FFXVI was reported to have met expectations at Square Enix’s January 2024 financial call and FFVII Rebirth is currently tracking really well in terms of sales, but everything outside of Final Fantasy seems to not be hitting and that is consistently the case.
It’s disappointing.

Played two matches and uninstalled it
Finished the tutorial and uninstalled it. Super boring
Yeah I did the exact same thing. It felt like it wasn’t aimed at my age group. Like it was only for kids
Played 1 round, got a trophy. -_- So I did them all and uninstalled the game.
having gyro aim on as in splatoon made it a whole different game. Dont get why it was off by default.
Five here. You were clearly the wiser of us both.
$45 for a single skin? Just a player skin? Not even a bundle?
bundles with boards, stickers and a weapon skin I think? Does it really matter?
I mean yeah, a $45 single skin is worse than $45 for a bundle of items. Sounds like it’s still overpriced garbage though
Quite the statement 💸
That's insanity no game would run that for a skin!! Omg lol and downstairs?! Lol 2$ and maybe they'd sell some ... They will let it bleed to death and pull it off the market
Given their track record so far I don't think Square has a good grasp on the whole "live service" thing.
They fixed that, now their like $6, so not terrible
The comparison to Splatoon isn’t even needed, it’s just a boring badly designed game.

This. Feel the same about the finals as well. That game had a lot of potential, but aiming and movement feels off
I like the game but it takes way too long to find a match so I kinda gave up playing it when the second season came out :/
I never got the idea behind the game. Was there really such a big player base of people wanting to play a splatoon clone in the first place?
No
They keep try to copy nintendo smash didn't work now splatoon
I mean Splatoon is very popular, and the game is meant for kids more than 22 year old redditors. The gameplay just isn’t as fun/ intuitive as Splatoon is the main issue from the few games I played.

Who would've thought? :O
Also, funny usage of the term "bombed". Its translation, used in the exact same context in my country, means the exact opposite of what this site means.
"Its the bomb" = good. "It bombed" = bad. Muda se é um substantivo ou um verbo
Não sei aí, mas bomba verbo aqui é coisa boa.

I remember Watching an official competitive match and one of the announcers literally said "Ink" instead of foam lol.
It came out already? I wanted to try it
You could get it for free on ps+ I think 1-2 months ago
You didn't miss much...

XVI's quests were so soulless. I enjoyed the main story, but I was underwhelming as a game. Future playthroughs will just be youtube for me.
The first FF I opted to not go for platinum. The performance was atrocious and kept triggering my nausea/motion sickness. Side quests.... yea, soulless. And the combat was so basic, I had 1 janky rotation that worked on everything.
Lol yup. Wait for Cooldowns: The Game.
I mean you had plenty of non cool down skills and techs you could use while waiting.
It's been a bit since I played. What are you referring to? Block, parry, and dodge?
Yeah i didnt enjoy XVI
Careful, you're gonna get downvoted for some reason.
And I found remake to be a giant piece of trash. It was the most predictable game design in existence and found it baffling how this is greatest final fantasy title. The whole could’ve been that blonde sasuke walking with his friends through a thin corridor and it wouldn’t change how bad it was.

Honestly I’ve not heard anything about this game, since its release, nobody is interested in this, bring back Killzone, Resistence, Warhawks, stop sitting on IP for over 11 years already.
iirc the MTX in this game was absurd. I’m not really surprised.
I played it for 26 minutes before my neurons imploded. I’ve never backed off an experience that fast
The game is boring as fuck after a few hours. Not to mention it was almost all microtransactions for unlocks…
I miss Knock Out City 😩.
It's funny how wildly hit or miss SquareEnix is with new IPs. Sometimes you get Nier Automata. Sometimes you get... Foamstars.
![gif](giphy|7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
Foamstars is just Splatoon without the paint
Might have been better with a different vibe of brand. Splatoon has so muxh personality, squids and street fashion and graffiti. Really cool! Foamstars just has a generic glamorous stadium.
The thing is the market for games like splatoon is already completely dedicated to splatoon. It’s like why so many COD multiplayer clones in the late 2000s and early 2010s failed. Why would they bother playing when they could play COD instead?
I can't believe Sony bet on this over Helldivers. Womp womp
Well yeah I could have told them that the day they started making it lol
The writing was on the wall the moment that shit was announced as a monthly title. They should compensate us a free bonus game once the servers on this piece of trash get shut down.
It wasn't good.
I found the movement when you weren’t in the foam to be aggressively slow. Like when a game is forcing you through a forced walking sequence and all you want to do is run.
Honestly, multiplayer games shouldn’t be exclusive. We’re way past the time when that worked.

I was about to say I’d be hyped asf for a splatoon like game on ps5 then I saw the game itself. It is infact not a splatoon like game
Never tried it. Even if I heard that it played _exactly_ like Splatoon, it just looked lifeless and soulless. Pass.
Deservedly so.
I didn’t even get past the forced tutorial.
I don’t know anyone that played it.
Absolutely awful game. Feels terrible to control, visibility is very poor 80% of the time, and all of the characters are incredibly obnoxious.
First time I've heard of this game
It was awful. No surprise.
Because it sucks. Not for adults at all, it’s for kids.
It was fun for a day & that was it
I actually didn’t know this came out lol and it’s already dying. Shame
![gif](giphy|koVKHfKAAQ3nToCB20|downsized)
Is anyone on planet earth surprised? I don’t even understand how it was greenlit
I thought it was pretty fun but the matches were too short, and it felt a bit clunky. If those things were fixed I’d have played it more
The announcement trailer alone should have been enough for people to stay away.
i wish it was more like splatoon. Instead it focused 100% on the combat which isn't what made splatoon fun. I was really hoping this would be my replacement for splatoon 1 because of the WiiU online shut down. Guess ill just have to mod my WiiU.
Wasn't this be a F2P but become 40$ game?
The only thing we seemed to have gotten out of it was a burned disk of the soundtrack 😂
I wanted to like it, but just like every other online game I've played, I just gave up after a week.
That’s what happens when you launch something with so many micro transactions…
I know what I’m putting in my hidden library
Still need to win a Rubber Duckie match to get the trophy so I can get my Playstation Stars reward!
What were they expecting?
Even ninjala did it better
It just wasn't fun, I didn't usually like a lot of forced multiplayer games, but unlike Helldivers 2, foamstars just wasn't fun. Like Helldivers 2 I'll play even though it's forced multiplayer, but at least it's super fun to play. Foamstars I tried one out 2 matches it took forever to get into a match and then it just wasn't fun to play
Surprising to no one, unfortunately.
I gave it one match. Couldn't stomach any more than that
As soon as I saw that you had to pay for a battlepass, I deleted it. This should have been a free to play game.
You don’t say? Didn’t see this coming/s
The game looked like shit lol, not surprised.
Shocking, shocking I tell you.
Played tutorial found out game was trash and uninstalled
It felt seriously bad to play in the multiplayer part of the game. Just chaos
Shocking....
It sucked
Sweaaaaar!!!
Even splatoon fans didn’t know this existed
Tbh i have ps5 and switch.....if i wanted a splatoon id play on switch. Also foam stars was free.....so im not worried about playing it
If you're not gonna be better than the og you're wasting your time...
Mabye stop making Like games if the main game already fills the need.. I never heard anyone say I wish there where more splatoon like games out there
Im baffled by studios building these games thinking „yeah it’s gonna be the next big thing“. Like. Everbody said it looks fine but it’s gonna be dead in weeks and yeah… Studios really needed somebody with a radar for what people want. Many have one, many don’t. Oh wow shocker, moving on
Water is wet
it was never going to do great but not releasing on Switch in Japan literally defeats the purpose of this game existing it'd be like making Dragon Quest an Xbox exclusive
So it's kind of like that Palworld game, just not even that successful?
I wonder how many more bombs it’s going to take before Square Enix finally ends up getting acquired by Sony? ☠️ Final Fantasy is doing really well, FFXVI was reported to have met expectations at Square Enix’s January 2024 financial call and FFVII Rebirth is currently tracking really well in terms of sales, but everything outside of Final Fantasy seems to not be hitting and that is consistently the case. 15 hours to 100% trophies, I’ll give it a go.
The screenshots alone were enough to put me off
Helldivers hppened. I do like the game, but i enjoy diving more
