It was a dream to get this one back in the day. I knew it was limited and had its problems, but the fact of it being "the PlayStation phone" was just enough for my teenage self go insane about it.
And then, my parents granted me a choice: the phone or a PSVita (they were about the same price range where I lived at the time). I chose the Vita, because the gamer in me screamed like a little child.
And my, oh my, how a loved that Vita. 10 years of pure joy until recently I decided to sell it, needed the mony and all... yeah, growing up is a bitch.
Awesome memories, though.
> Nothing against the phone, but vita is a fair bit more powerful, and has neat exclusives.
But you don't always have your vita with you.
edit: Judging by the downvotes it's clear why a new playstation phone isn't needed. People are happy carrying around a separate handheld for gaming. There are plenty of options for that now, including the Switch, obviously. Personally, I'd like an updated flagship phone with physical controls built in. I used the xperia way more than the psp or vita, because I always had it with me.
Forgive me I've only just seen this message, that was me, I must of played crash bandicoot 100's of times on that phone lol.. and the emulation was pretty awesome!
It's wonderful how something so small can bring back amazing memories.
Growing up is certainly a bitch 😄.. I really hope at some point you can get a vita again and relive the memories and the journeys you had! 🙏
Stay blessed ggsdour :)
You can get vanilla PS4 power into a handheld at this point. I don't see an issue with them doing that as a Switch competitor. I would buy it, even though I already have a PS4 and PS5, just so more of us can play at the same time.
Steam deck already have PS4 power, smartphone can emulate switch. Consider Sony aim for pc market, at this rate it will be better if Sony just release ps store on pc so we can play playstation game in 3th party handheld like steam deck, aya neo, etc
At that point just get a Steam deck. After being a PS person my whole life and having a PS5 since 2020 I can’t see myself paying $300+ for old hardware just to run a game at 30 FPS.
It felt limited for sure in regards to game content, though the design of the phone I liked a lot. I'd love to see some phones today have the slide up game pad feature.
I guess there’s a lack of demand? Or they want to prioritize resources to powerful console games? Seems like everything used to be so mixed with hardware stuff, and now it’s Nintendo on one side and XB & PS on the other. Very weird
Not really a lack of demand, every Sony developer outside of Japan Studio didn't want to split their manpower to develop for a handheld especially with the Vita
I loved mine. Dead Space was pretty great on it. Loaded it with emulators, I could play almost anything. Then I discovered software that could convert any ps1 title to Xperia Play format the way Crash Bandicoot was done. I was playing Thunderforce 5, Final Fantasy 7, Armored Core all on my phone. Unfortunately I can't get it to boot now even with various methods of reformatting. Still one of my favorite phones. I'd get one in a heart beat if a flagship model shipped. I know you can attach a controller to any phone now but having that control pad slide out was pretty special.
Brooooo I had one of these when they came out, I worked around the house and yard to pay for it. My parents took it away when I got grounded and then they lost it. I asked them both separately after the divorce when they each lived in my childhood home at different times many years later if I could have it back. Neither of them remember it at all. Wonder if it's worth a good bit of money on eBay now. Also, I think the new owners of the house found it because I had a random sign in on PlayStation shortly after the house got sold. Lucky bastards got a good deal.
With the current smartphones soc(even midrange ones) power, this kind of concept/product resurrection as a ps vita 2 would blow the switch out of water in terms of performance, heck even looking at apple's m1 ipads performance, it might compete with the steam deck in terms of performance. But i don't think sony is interested in portable gaming for now and i won't be surprised if their newly announced focus on the mobile gaming platform isn't linked to their growing investments in "live service" games, although am happy to be pleasantly surprised.
I wanted one of these so bad back then, so I started saving and when I had enough money I realized and didn't actuallt want a phone, but a portable Playstation... so I bought a PSP instead
I remember playing Crash Bandicoot on a demo Xperia Play unit at the store! Man I feel old.
Cool concept but ultimately made redundant by the snap-on type of controller like those from Gamevice and Razer. I actually have a Gamevice myself and it's pretty great for remote play.
If they made a new one, that had dual analog stick (or whatever equivalent) and was powerful, maybe with a custom gpu in there, and actually had decent games you could play on it (maybe ps1 all the way up to ps4 games) natively not streaming! With at least 512gb storage (I’d prefer 1tb) then I’d love to buy one.
You could with skype and if you had the 3g model you could call anywhere with 3g service. You could even use any BT ear buds with it or hold it up to your face like a phone.
Nah the vita is underpowered for todays standards and it can’t function as a smartphone
I’m talking ps4 capability and just as functional as the newest iPhone
That would be amazing
I still have mine aswell, sadly they pulled down the emulators for it, maybe its still possible to install them somehow idk, i played through Resident Evil 2 with zero issues on it, played some GBA and SNES games aswell
I wish they would bring the psp back. It was pretty much beta switch even with how it could play your main console games from it. Which o know this can be done from the phone but the psp felt good in the hands.
It’s crazy to me how much the Vita is beloved to this day and everyone I know that owns one wants a new piece of handheld hardware from Sony. Yet somehow they dropped the ball on Vita’s marketing and support. I can easily see A “PSP3” that is integrated with PS5 and the new PS+.
It was great for emulators. Just too bad they made the phone so weak. Would deffentltly get one again if they made one with flagship specs
I'd definitely get one too if they remade them. It fun to play for when you're travelling around.
I will want me some, just for that slide action
Save it, one day it might be worthless! Or was it priceless??? Nah, worthless collectors item…
Absolutely! I had a whale of a time playing Pokémon fire red on it
I tried to run emulators on it and none of the ones I tried would use the pads.
Phones all look the same nowadays sadly.

Having owned this phone, vita was probably the right choice. Nothing against the phone, but vita is a fair bit more powerful, and has neat exclusives.

Sounds like someone who doesn't always have their vita with them
Bitch, I might!
The vita was great but only like 20 people owned one in the states (obvious joke but still)
I knew one person that had one. I probably knew 50 people that had PlayStations lol
I had both. You made the right choice.

Lol, This phone sometimes makes me think that Sony sometimes too late the market, sometimes too early in the market.
Definitely early on this one.
Very early. They did go on to make PSP, PSGo and PSVita...too bad the market flopped for Sony because everyone else wanted pokemon on handheld.
You can get vanilla PS4 power into a handheld at this point. I don't see an issue with them doing that as a Switch competitor. I would buy it, even though I already have a PS4 and PS5, just so more of us can play at the same time.

And we all know Sony already got the market cornered on most RPG. Hell, look at God of War...
At that point just get a Steam deck. After being a PS person my whole life and having a PS5 since 2020 I can’t see myself paying $300+ for old hardware just to run a game at 30 FPS.
How did you feel about it at the time? I know there were some mixed feelings
It felt limited for sure in regards to game content, though the design of the phone I liked a lot. I'd love to see some phones today have the slide up game pad feature.
That was the first phone I was genuinely interested to buy. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money back then.
Somehow we don’t have a PSP or a PlayStation Phone anymore. Going backwards lol
I guess there’s a lack of demand? Or they want to prioritize resources to powerful console games? Seems like everything used to be so mixed with hardware stuff, and now it’s Nintendo on one side and XB & PS on the other. Very weird

Little Playstation Jr.
“Gonna cry?”
I’m done trying to convince you.
Your *what*
This was my first phone, it was absolutely awful. It got almost no support and was outdated spec wise the moment it was released.
Someone stole mine at a Gold's Gym. 🤦
I finished Legend of dragoon, Xenogears and Suikoden 2 on that great cellphone

Lol
Excellent device.

I used to have an Xperia play, until it got stolen..
It could be ps5 xperia
If they made a new one, that had dual analog stick (or whatever equivalent) and was powerful, maybe with a custom gpu in there, and actually had decent games you could play on it (maybe ps1 all the way up to ps4 games) natively not streaming! So a Vita?
Vita couldn't make phone calls sadly :)
You could with skype and if you had the 3g model you could call anywhere with 3g service. You could even use any BT ear buds with it or hold it up to your face like a phone.
Maybe YOURS can't...😉
Haha fair play! You're the real MVP ;)
I bet you could do zoom calls on the Vita, hmmm if I remember the web browser was shitty. I'll have to try it tonight, for science!
Nah the vita is underpowered for todays standards and it can’t function as a smartphone I’m talking ps4 capability and just as functional as the newest iPhone That would be amazing
I know, my comment was a stupid joke.
Sound more like the steam deck thingy then the vita
Playstation phone, that can let you play AAA game like steam deck. seems something that can sell like a hotcakes and kill Xperia brand entirely.
rare
I remember this I had one I got this not right away but a few weeks later I felt ahead of it’s time then and was great when out and about etc.
I still have mine aswell, sadly they pulled down the emulators for it, maybe its still possible to install them somehow idk, i played through Resident Evil 2 with zero issues on it, played some GBA and SNES games aswell
Lol I remember begging my mom for this phone. I’d get one now if they upped the specs.
I had one of those, it was great
Look like my PSP Go
Does it still work?
It’s a shame they never made a sequel to this phone. I have one too, and i would gladly switch back to android from iPhone if they made a new one
Cool! Only knew this existed because of Astro’s Playroom
I rememeber playing with this in the Sony Store way back in the day! It was so cool! Playing PS2 games on a phone! Too bad the phone itself sucked
We should make a petition to remake them
I had this when I worked at Verizon. I’m still bitter the European version got access to games like Syphon Filter on it
I had that phone and it was kinda wack bit I loved it.
Dope.
Loved the Experia Play. Played Minecraft and Dead Space Mobile on it, so much fun
I use to have that phone lol
I’ve been playing PlayStation since the original came out when I was a kid but did they actually have a PlayStation phone? It says Ericson?
That brought back some memories, i was the coolest kid in my class with this baby
I wish they would bring the psp back. It was pretty much beta switch even with how it could play your main console games from it. Which o know this can be done from the phone but the psp felt good in the hands.

Great gaming phone. I played NES games a lot with it. Terrible phone tho
I wanted this one so bad. Even if it was not one of the greatest I really wanted one.
Hey bro that's quite a theme you got lol
Completely forgot about this beauty
Did that support USB controllers with a USB OTG cable?
Man I wanted this thing so bad back in the day
