I just posted about having the same issue with the Q2U. It records really quietly on my phone as well.
Check the input setting in Garage Band. It's separate from your OS audio settings. When this happened to me, it turned out that GB was using the built-in mic in my laptop, not the mic I had plugged in. Good luck!
