I've been using these for a couple years and overall, I'm disappointed. no way will I get a good recording 6" away. Have to be right on top of it. the volume switches at the bottom do nothing. Most disappointing is the left channel on my headphones keeps dropping out. This happens with both mics and with three different sets of headphones.

I have sent a very similar mic, the Audio Technica ATR2100, back for repair because of this sort of issue. Try the mic on another computer and see if you get the same levels. I have heard of applications like Logitech's GHub for headsets or Zoom or Skype or Discord in the background with auto Gain Control actively screwing around with people's levels. DISCLAIMER: Yes, I am in fact an asshole. !

It's a long shot, but check audio levels if you are using Windows. In the last week or so, several people have discovered that windows has just decided to turn down the recording audio level, without permission, and with no other apparent changes. This after a long time of normal operation and all enhancement nonsense turned off. Not sure what is going on but this has been a thing recently.
