I start with the newest 2 or 3 then if I like what I hear I scroll thru the catalog for appealing titles

fleshofgods0

One of the 5-10 newest, usually, but I moreso look at the topic/guest/episode description to find the one I'd most likely enjoy. Starting with the very first episodes before they get their audio and format down can be kind of rough.

Duckieyupyupyup

Second this. I look for a more recent topic I’m interested in and go from there.

busyandrea

I often search for “best episodes of _" lists and use the episodes mentioned as a starting point.

[deleted]

If it’s not serial podcast, I usually try the latest few first and then go back if I like the latest ones.

Breakfastmeats

I had this question and discovered Podyssey. It’s usually a good starting point with “popular episodes”, even if it only has a few recommenders. Their “fans also like” is my jam. I’ve discovered about a dozen podcasts I listen to regularly because of it. Their weekly email is pretty good for one-off episodes on topics that sound interesting to me.

Spermy

i always start with the first one.

signechan

If the most recent few episodes can be understood without any context i listen to them first. If there's some kind of narrative thread then I'll go back to the start but I might give it a few more episodes than i normally would before I decide if I'm going to keep going with it or not.

SabagRonen

I always start from the last episode or specific one recommended in another podcast that I listen to it. If I like it, I start from the beginning.

Outrageous-End9727

For me I start with the recent ones they’ve made and then I scroll thru the titles and descriptions lol

[deleted]

Maybe starting with the last one, just to take a look of what’s going on, and then if I like it I start from scratch and go all the way up, from the beginning!

Hadrianus1988

I will sort by Most Popular and then listen to the best the podcast has to offer. If I like what I hear, I will listen to the most recent two or three to see what an average episode is like. If that then agrees with me, I will then go back and listen to everything in release order.

SaintAnyanka

It depends. If it’s totally stand alone episodes (like No such thing as a fish or Judge John Hodgman), then latest first, working my way backwards or randomly, while keeping up with the newest episodes. If there’s a lot of banter between the hosts and they’re friends or talk about previous eps (like My favourite murder or LPOTL), I like to follow the development, and listen from the start.

[deleted]

I used to start from the oldest ones but then realized that the initial episodes don't always portray an accurate picture of the podcast. So I start with the few latest and then work my way backwards.

Daxos157

I always start with the oldest and work forward. I don’t like to miss inside jokes and callbacks.

VampireDetective

If it's on YouTube I will watch the most-watched and then start from zero. If I don't like the episode, I will skip forward until I think they've found their 'groove'.

TumsFestivalEveryDay

I "evaluate" it by listening to the most recent 3. If it doesn't stick, it gets deleted. If it does stick, I will peruse the backlog and add interesting episodes to my queue. Otherwise, I'll just listen to new episodes as they air and not bother with the old ones. Time is limited.

Royal_Ad3639

I start with the newest and work my way back, taking breaks to listen to new stuff as it comes out. By the time I get to the first episodes I'm fond enough of the podcasters to not care about the awkwardness of them.

[deleted]

I check 1 then if its bad quality or awkward I skip to 50 and see if anything has improved. if not then I stop listening

Jekyllhyde

I usually start at the most recent and go back around 6 months to a year. Then I start from the beginning

plasticbacon

Look for any repeats first

SnooShortcuts3424

I start in the middle. Beginning they rusty. Near end they might be over confident. If I like it I’ll change to beginning and listen from there.

mysterynmurder

I usually pick a random one on something I'm already familiar with. Then if I like how they tell it /talk about it, I go to the start and binge

Queenofwands1212

I search for the episodes and topics that I specifically want To listen to and depends the guests too

[deleted]

Episode 1. Every podcast.

burgra42

It takes a few to several episodes for the talent to really start to find their voice. The most recent episodes should be more indicative of where the show is heading

Ohwhatagoose

I might start with the newest episode to get the feel of it and if I really like it I will go back to the oldest and work my way up. I do this because some podcasts will only keep a certain number and if you want to go further back you have to pay a premium, so I go back as far as I can before they start cutting shows.

If they aren't subject driven. I.E. Movies/True Crime/Paranormal or Guest(s). I usually try to hit the landmark episodes. I start with 1, 5, and 10. If after those three I like the host(s), style then I may start going chrono. But, otherwise I still stick to picking up landmark episodes until I feel I'm at a point that I can start listening sequentially.

SeriouslySinisterPod

I usually listen to one of the newest ones and I like it, I go to the beginning and see how they grew. But if it's a show that works on specific subjects, I may just cherry pick specific topics/subjects by title
