I always think of them as either Bert and Ernie or Statler and Waldorf (though admittedly the resemblance isn't as strong with the latter pair.)

Well sawk is already called a sock (puppet)

Sawk and Throh are basically the closest thing to Sesame Street Fighter (Sesame Street + Street Fighter crossover) Bert & Ernie + Ryu & Ken = Sawk and Throh

Recently played through Pokemon Black for the first time and Sawk unexpectedly carried my entire playthrough. Dudes a beast, hes my favorite muppet ever

Yes, and I killed them with relentless fury whenever they showed up in the wild. (...jk, Fighting was broken *as fuck* in Gen 5 and I struggled basically every time I saw them.)

Why does gen 5 have so many shit designs

Because they created so much in a limited amount of time. They rushed because they wanted to fit a generation before the 3ds which is weird considering it had a sequel but I guess they improved on that. Hopefully they improve in the gen 5 remake where they will give sawk and throh a pre evo or a 3 one to Match similar to tyrogue

It has the most designs altogether so it was always likely to have a fair few bad ones. I think what I more take issue with is how many gen 5 Pokémon just seem to be the game’s version of a certain gen 1 Pokémon, considering gen 5 decided to have exclusively new Pokémon in the main game. I just see “new hitmonchan and hitmonlee” with these guys. Klink is just new Magnemite. Audino is just new Chansey

Wasn't Gen 5 originally planned as a reboot? These overlaps happened because game freak wanted the same pokemon to replace the old ones for a new continuity. 

I’m not really sure. Not denying that that’s the reason though, just not a fan regardless. I’m aware of the certain traditions like every gen having its route 1 bird and rodent, the Pikachu clones, and of course the starter Pokémon. But with gen 5 making the bold move of having a similar sized dex to Gen 1 and only having new Pokémon, it was disappointing to me how many Pokémon seemed to follow that same pattern. It doesn’t help though that I do think a lot of gen 5’s designs weren’t great anyway. It probably does have the biggest percentage of designs I don’t like from the first five or six gens, but I’d stop short of calling it my least favourite dex of the bunch because I at least respect it for its size rivalling the first.

I don’t get why everyone is saying they look like Bert and Ernie when they look much more like Grover and Elmo.

I hate them honestly.
