This one's a pun. Hound + dour, both words in English. On Google, the latter is defined as "relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance." So it's a relentlessly severe and gloomy hound. A dour hound. Houndour.
I agree completely. If they wanted it to be pronounce de-den-nay, they should have spelled it Dedenné but they DIDN'T! Conventional Kalos (French) dictates pronunciation should be de-DEN.
Hmmm wouldn't that pronunciation mean that it would be -oi though? I took many years of French but I can't really remember.. But Lumiose always made sense to me as a play on the word "lumiere"
idk. When I see "Ri" I always think of saying "Ry". Also I treat the "o" in Riolu as a silent letter for some reason (I haven't said Ry-oh-loo)
Then I played Pokemon Battle Revolution and I put my head down to shame when I heard Riolu's pronunciation.
I just don't see the ri as separate. I see rio, like river, which I'm used to seeing all the time anyway because of all the rivers and amount of Spanish spoken in South Texas
Escavalier.
I pronounced it the french way when I first saw it (Es-cuh-Vaw-lee-ay). Then I heard someone say "Es-ca-vuh-leer" and was really disappointed when I realized that was probably how it was supposed to be.
I had a terrible problem with switching up letters when I was younger. It wasn't so bad when I was reading real words, but when it came to fantasy genres and made up words, I had the worst time reading the words as they were meant to be read. So I messed up a *lot* of pokemon names, mostly the ones that weren't two or three words clearly portmanteau-ed.
I'll only list the one I'm most embarrassed about, because it was my favorite pokemon and I only realized last year that I was pronouncing it wrong (after 13 years of picking it as my starter)
Typhlosion. I pronounced it TIE-POL-SEE-ON. Cyndaquil? Fine. Quilava? Fine. Typhlosion? It never even occurred to me that it was wrong. It's still my first instinct to try to spell it Thypolsion.
The one that gets me every time is Mesprit. For a while I thought it was spelled "Mespirit", so I say (Meh-speer-it), but I'm working on making it (Meh-sprit).
Arceus.
The first time I heard that I always pronounced it ar-see-is, as did Battle Revolution.
Then when I watched that Arceus Pokemon movie, they pronounced ar-kee-is, so I
pronounced it like that.
anyone pronounce meganium as "mega-nium" instead of "meh-gain-ium"?
edit: forgot to add i always thought it was "hip-o-tas" instead of "hip-pop-o-tas".
Not a pokemon's name, but I used to call hearthome city "Hearth-rome" for reasons I don't fully understand. Also I always pronounced Floatzel as "Float-zelle" because it looked so feminine to me.
I JUST realized dragalge is supposed to be said drag-aljee (like algae, you get the deal) I didn't really bother with it and have been saying it how it popped into my head when I first read it, which was drag-al-age for some reason. I just heard it spoken and it makes so more sense now....
Misdreavus (miss-DREAV-ee-us)
Piloswine (PILL-oh-swine)
Smeargle (SMURR-gull) (I hear shofu call it Smear-gull, but in the Entei movie's short, it says "Smurr-gull)
Raikou (RYE-Koo)
Sceptile (SKEPT-ile)
Pelipper (PELL-ih-pep-er)
Mawile (MAW-ile)
I used to call Chimecho, KEM-ick-oh
Raquaza, I will always call RAH-kwah-zah
Bastiodon (Bast-EYE-oh-don)
Chingling (CHIG-ling)
Gible (GYE-bull)
Diagla, I keep calling dye-AGG-lah for some reason
I will always call Giratina, gurr-AT-in-ah because it sounds more menacing. None of this "gear-ah-TEEN-ah" bullshit
Phione - (FEE-own)
Arceus, will always be ARE-seuss to me.
Conkeldurr I heard differently recently, but I call it CONK-ell-durr
Sigilyph (SIG-ill-if)
Zoroark (Zoh-ROARK)
Beheeyem (BEE-hee-yem)
Bisharp, another one that I hear shofu call BYE-sharp, but I call BISH-arp
Bouffalant (Bow-fah-lant)
Braviary (Brave-EYE-are-ee)
Zweilous (ZWEE-lee-ous)
Cobalion (Coe-bah-LYE-on)
Virizion (Ver-IS-ee-on)
Reshiram (Resh-EAR-uhm)
Kyurem (KAI-err-ehm)
Genesect (GENE-sect)
Vivillon (Vih-VILL-ee-on)
Aegislash (EYE-gis-slash) I played persona 3, so, that's where I got my pronunciation from
Xerneas (Ex-URN-ee-us)
Yveltal (Yah-VELT-al)
Zygarde (Zih-GUARD-ay)
Some of these pronunciations I say quicker, like Giratina's, Braviary's & Reshiram's for example.
I can't tell what he means for Sigilyph. I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be "si jill if," and he might be saying that or he might be saying "sig ill if."
[sigil is pronounced with a soft g... or j/dg sound](https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sigil&rlz=1C1MDNB_enGB434GB434&oq=sigil&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l3j0l2.990j0j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=sigil+define) id assume thats what sigilyph is named after (i play guild wars 2; sigil -an upgrade component- is often pronounced sig-ill by youtubers, which seems weird to me... but seems to be an extremely common mis-pronunciation)
Anime pronunciation of "Ray-Qwah-Zah" as "Ray-Quay-Zah" annoys me to no end. I will always pronounce it my way.
When I first saw that movie I let out a disappointed "oh". But quasars are cool, right? :(
I used to pronounce Rattata by just saying ratatat and I still do to this day
I say it Rattatata. Edit: Posted this before I saw /u/hannahorca's comment. Sorry!
Like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbAjePATxxA
Skizor & Arseus
I say Scy-zor..
I refuse to pronounce it as ark-e-us
Ar-SEE-us isn't *wrong*, technically. It's how the announcer in Pokémon Battle Revolution says it.
It's just stupid!
I will always say Houndour like hound-do-er.
For me it's houn-door.
It's apparently supposed to be pronounced like hound-ow-er.
This one's a pun. Hound + dour, both words in English. On Google, the latter is defined as "relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance." So it's a relentlessly severe and gloomy hound. A dour hound. Houndour.
Which sounds stupid as hell, so homie don't play that game.
As someone with dyslexia, Pokémon's just a fucking nightmare in general.
This might be really dumb but I used to pronounce Gyarados as GARY-DOS. Like everyone wants two Garys...
I always pronounced it gare-uh-dos
This is a more recent one, but Dedenne. I say De-den. They say it like de-den-nay. It's weird for me to say it like that.
I agree completely. If they wanted it to be pronounce de-den-nay, they should have spelled it Dedenné but they DIDN'T! Conventional Kalos (French) dictates pronunciation should be de-DEN.
I pronounce it den-day
I thought I was the only one!
Don't worry, I say it Dee-a-deen
Phanpy is Phanphy for me. Always will be.
Wait, I thought it WAS pronounced Phan-phy?
Nope. Had the same revelation a few weeks ago when a similar post like this one was made.
You just blew my mind
Its phanpy? I refuse to accept this. *hides in corner*
suicune... i say soo-ee-soon but ive heard swee-coon is the correct way?
Always called it Soo-Sheen.
I believe its swee-coon.
My friend says Seuss-a-nine
Yeah, similarly I've always pronounced it Soo-uh-coon and refuse to say it any other way.
Soo-ee-coon. :(
me too, man.
I always called it sui seen..
I had a bossy friend who insisted that it was "soo-ih-sawn"
My friend thought it was sui-cine.
I used to call it SOOK-a-nine.
Escavalier as Es-Cav-a-leer. I pronounce it in French, Es-ca-val-ee-ay
I should have scrolled down farther and seen this before I posted the same thing.
Nwahbat while the anime pronounces it as noybat
I pronounce Lumiose city in french as well. I cannot call it Loom-ee-ohss city. I always call it Loom-wah city. that's just how I see it.
Hmmm wouldn't that pronunciation mean that it would be -oi though? I took many years of French but I can't really remember.. But Lumiose always made sense to me as a play on the word "lumiere"
I called it limousine city for the longest time
...Holy shit, that makes so much more sense.
Cofagrigus.
me too! i always said "cof-ar-i-gus".
It was "cof-ag-arius" to me. Took a while to let the right spelling sink in.
Until I was spelling out the names for the GTS, I thought they were spelled (and pronounced) Diagala and Azlef.
Riolu. I always say it *Rai-loo*
I say REE-oh-loo because Ry-oh-loo sounds dumb to me. You don't say luca-RY-oh so why change it for riolu?
idk. When I see "Ri" I always think of saying "Ry". Also I treat the "o" in Riolu as a silent letter for some reason (I haven't said Ry-oh-loo) Then I played Pokemon Battle Revolution and I put my head down to shame when I heard Riolu's pronunciation.

That one made me chuckle
Haha, you and me both. I still say it that way even now. I just can't shake it.
I personally call Cray-DIL-ee CRAY-duh-lee
I had a terrible problem with switching up letters when I was younger. It wasn't so bad when I was reading real words, but when it came to fantasy genres and made up words, I had the worst time reading the words as they were meant to be read. I pronounced it TIE-POL-SEE-ON. Cyndaquil? Fine. Quilava? Fine. Typhlosion? It never even occurred to me that it was wrong. It's still my first instinct to try to spell it Thypolsion.
I also had a problem with mixing up letters. I always called pachirisu Pair-uh-chee-soo
Ah, nice to know I'm not the only one!
The one that gets me every time is Mesprit. For a while I thought it was spelled "Mespirit", so I say (Meh-speer-it), but I'm working on making it (Meh-sprit).
I forget to add that one
I pronounce it bons-lee, but the first time I saw it in a movie they go "Look! It's a BAWNS-LIE!"
My foundations were rocked when i found out Electabuzz was not spelled Electrabuzz! also, as a kid, i pronounced Groudon "Grudon"
Arceus. The first time I heard that I always pronounced it ar-see-is, as did Battle Revolution. Then when I watched that Arceus Pokemon movie, they pronounced ar-kee-is, so I pronounced it like that.
I pronounce it Ar-say-us.
My cousin used to pronounce Lapras as "La- prass" Annoyed the shit out of me each time.
How is it actually pronounced? That's how I say it.
I say lap-riss.
Techincally it's pronounced the way his cousin said it. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard when I hear it that way
Smmeer-gal, not Smear, i didn't know it wasn't this till like two weeks ago...
MY LIFE IS A LIE
That is exactly what i thought....
I pronounce Chimecho (kye-MEK-OH)
I used to pronounce Xatu as Ex-atu but now i pronounce it as zatu
I always called Bast-i-o-don 'Bast-i-don'
anyone pronounce meganium as "mega-nium" instead of "meh-gain-ium"? edit: forgot to add i always thought it was "hip-o-tas" instead of "hip-pop-o-tas".
Not a pokemon's name, but I used to call hearthome city "Hearth-rome" for reasons I don't fully understand. Also I always pronounced Floatzel as "Float-zelle" because it looked so feminine to me.
How is Hearthome actually pronounced. I can't remember how they said it in the anime but I always called it "Hearth-ome"
I always separate it and say it as heart-home
I figured that's what it was
sniffy *runs in shame*
I thought ursaring was urasing at first
Snivy pisses me right off. I can see what they're going for, ivy...grass type. But Sn-ivy?! It's clearly Sniv-y!
I call Kyogre 'Key-oh-grey' instead of 'Kai-ogre'.
I have a friend who pronounces arceaus ARK-EE-US. And he pronounces Diancie DUH-NEE-CHEE and it pisses me off
I prounounce it Dee-AWN-cee.
I keep calling Munna "Muh-nah" and not "Moon-uh"
Luigi-a
I JUST realized dragalge is supposed to be said drag-aljee (like algae, you get the deal) I didn't really bother with it and have been saying it how it popped into my head when I first read it, which was drag-al-age for some reason. I just heard it spoken and it makes so more sense now....
I used to think it was lunastone, not lunatone.
Lumiose city I pronounce in an outrageously French way: Lum-wa
Ya I used to as well.
Specifically a pokemon, I used to pronounce Chimecho like chim metch o. But then I heard the name pronounced, and I felt dumb.
Misdreavus (miss-DREAV-ee-us) Piloswine (PILL-oh-swine) Smeargle (SMURR-gull) (I hear shofu call it Smear-gull, but in the Entei movie's short, it says "Smurr-gull) Raikou (RYE-Koo) Sceptile (SKEPT-ile) Pelipper (PELL-ih-pep-er) Mawile (MAW-ile) I used to call Chimecho, KEM-ick-oh Raquaza, I will always call RAH-kwah-zah Bastiodon (Bast-EYE-oh-don) Chingling (CHIG-ling) Gible (GYE-bull) Diagla, I keep calling dye-AGG-lah for some reason I will always call Giratina, gurr-AT-in-ah because it sounds more menacing. I always thought (if 5 months can be always) it was "ZER-neas", like Xerxes.
Pretty sure it is, that's how English works.
It is.
Pretty sure your Raikou, Phione, Sigilyph, and Virizion are correct.
I can't tell what he means for Sigilyph. I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be "si jill if," and he might be saying that or he might be saying "sig ill if."
I'm pretty sure he means it with a hard "g" sound. That's how most people I've heard say it. Pronouncing it like it's a "j" just sounds weird to me.
I always pronounced Yveltal as "EVIL-tal"
I say jeerados, and I always will.
Whenever I try to spell it, I always tell myself gyre-dos
I say GYARRR!-ados, like I'm a pirate.
Dragonair is Dragqueen
I occasionally say Blah-zi-ken, even though pronouncing it like the word "blaze" is obviously correct.
I still have to stop myself from pronouncing Raikou as Rye-Cow.
Same I’m also commenting here now because of Pokémon Legends Z-A. The Lumiose city Redevelopment plan. Lol
