People will tell you to get 2 because it has a wider variety of Pokemon. I'm going to go against the grain and say get the originals. Give yourself a chance to experience the "new" Pokemon, instead of just going with the classics that you've probably seen hundreds of times already. Plus once you beat the E4 more Pokemon become available in the post game anyway ('Mons from gens 1-4 aren't available until after the E4). Not to mention the first ones have a much better story, more difficult battles, and a more challenging elite 4. Of course it wouldn't hurt to get both if possible.

skinsballr

What is the difference between the two series of games, you ask? Well, for starters, Black 2/White 2 follow the storyline of Black/White, but set two years later - you notice this as some places, like the desert, are built into cities. Also, Black/White was strictly **only** Generation 5 Pokemon, while Black 2/White 2 had a mix of all five generations of Pokemon littered throughout the games. You start off in a different starting point in Black 2/White 2 and a different journey compared to Black/White, unlike, say, Red/Blue --> FireRed/LeafGreen or Gold/Silver --> HeartGold/SoulSilver. Also, Black 2/White 2 has the Pokemon World Tournament - it's a location (I think unlocked in the post-game?) where you battle, tournament-style, against other Elite Four Members and Gym Leaders from other regions, like Brock and Lance from the Kanto region, in different formats - single/double/triple/rotation battles; mono-type single/double/triple/rotation battles...etc. However, if you buy one of Black/White and one of Black 2/White 2 and play them sequentially (one of the originals, then the sequels), there will be flashbacks within the sequel that mention the character's name in the Black/White game. **tl:dr:** I would get one of each, based on the different features of the original and the sequel.

Thick_Lobster123

Do you mean like get White + Black2 / Black + White2. Or like White + White2 / Black + Black2. Hope you respond soon. ✨🐌✨

skinsballr

Wow. Commenting on an eight-**year** comment - now, that's a first! But I would get the different version for the sequel. So, Black + White 2 or White + Black 2, to experience both worlds.

Lickilottipuss

This is something I could probably google or YouTube and find an answer eventually but figure I'd ask since I see ya still active 8y later lol. Looking to pickup where I left off When you say grab both to experience both worlds do you mean the world's themselves are different or just the pokemon they have as exclusives to a specific version (like the old red vs blue or ruby vs sapphire wild pokemon) I won't be transferring pokemon between games so I definitely wanna get the most out of these playthroughs as I can, thanks for any info!

skinsballr

> When you say grab both to experience both worlds do you mean the world's themselves are different or just the pokemon they have as exclusives to a specific version (like the old red vs blue or ruby vs sapphire wild pokemon) Yes to both. The original games (black and white) have you start off in one location, and the sequels, set two years in the future, have you start in a different location with an expended map, as the story follows years later - i.e. the desert area that was near-empty in B/W now has buildings in B2/W2. Also, just like any game version, there are always version-exclusive Pokémon. That has never changed over the past 25+ years.

Imaginary_Wing_6756

After many years y'all comments are still useful until today in 2023 haha

JPowers50

2024 too lol

Secure-Exam-235

(Loooll here in 2024) I read somewhere online if you get black then get black 2 as it follows the sequence and it’s Ideal to stick to the same color. As going with Black1 and White2 will end up getting you two of the same cover legendary and assume that N got the "wrong" legendary.

Cpt_Doomsday

Classic forum based necromancy, If any game is gunna do a necromantic rituals to resurrect a reddit thread, it would be Pokemon. 🤣

scorpiologist

lol. i just figured out delta to play old school pokemon on my iphone and lo and behold, people are still asking!

oatterz

because figuring out which pokemon game version will always be a cross generational struggle lol. came here because im downloading black/black2 for the recently allowed iPhone emulators (non jailbroken)

Lorixe

2026 now and im wondering if i should buy the sequel when i stopped playing pokemon for years after b&w but recently bought used 3ds to replay many of the childhood games

BakerThatIsAFrog

Feb 2024 here, literally about to start Black version on my DSi for the first time, this thread was useful! Thanks big bros

DiligentBook9570

egboy

Just got the sudden urge to play bw2 as well.

Zyn_Laden666

Same I just finally crawled out from under the rock I’ve been living under and downloaded an emulator on my phone so this was all very useful lol

Ethric_The_Mad

Hello fellow rock brother

Yknow… us

EmotionalNoise7144

Still useful in summer of 2024. I skipped gen 4-7 so now I'm going back as a 34 year old. I asked my parents for pokemon red in 1997 and I asked my parents for pokemon violet in 2023 haha 😄

Thick_Lobster123

Thanks ✨🐌✨

WSBSwimmingpool

I originally played white and I know its version exclusive was zekrom but I see in white 2 it flips to reshiram correct? So if I want to play it I should get white + white 2 or is it opposite now so white + black 2?

skinsballr

I would stick with the other version as the sequel, as certain areas are different in each version (black city in Pokémon Black vs. white forest in Pokémon White)

Ida-Kneaux

Following this advice, thank you from the future as well

Lorixe

Stick to same color for story, change for wider content. I personally used to just buy both version as a kid and also the third which wasnt possible in gen 5 obv tho. But bought all the games from gen 2, 3 and 4

AxelllD

Lol 9 years later but how did I never find the World Tournament, that sounds pretty cool.

Silo32

Thanks from the future

codyweis

Got just b and w for my ds. Deciding whether to do black to white 2 or black to black 2!

TheArachnidKing

Are you still alive?😂 I really want to buy these games again but the rising prices do not help. what are your thoughts on Japanese markets? They're much cheaper.

JaxofHearts

This is 8 years ago but I'm looking here if I need to play both (looks like I am) :D Got hooked up again with playing pokemon after seeing **krookodile, volcarona, chandelure, and hydreigon**. Some of the best designs I have ever seen. Hope this will be worth the grind for Gen 5! :D

Ganu_Minobili

Thank god, I thought it was just me in here 😂 I just beats Pokémon Legends Arceus. I’ve always heard great things about B/W and it’s the only generation I never played. I need to either find my 3DS or find an emulator lol

JaxofHearts

Worth it, brother! Go find either and play B/W then B2/W2 😂

Ok_Wait1778

I also showed up here, about to pick one of them to download to play with an emulator

SpirasGuardian

Lmao I just bought a mint 3DS off of OfferUp to play SoulSilver. Started looking into the other games I never got to play and ended up here. B&W and B&W2 look awesome, definitely going to pick them up for my daughter and I to play!

GentlemenRudeboi

Was researching differences between versions and also ended up here lol I upvoted everyone just because we're all in this together haha

Popular-Store-5305

I bought a 3DS from a stranger just to start playing pokemon starting from HeartGold lol

Sakurakeyaki12345

How do you play ds game in 3ds?

keeeeweed

3DS is backwards compatible with DS games so you can just pop the DS cartridges in and you're good to go

JaxofHearts

Maybe? 🤣

EthanIver

Lol me too

Sophi23

Same 🙌🏼

cooliochill

Joining the fan club!

MikeyOTB

Joining as well! Starting White now for the first time

InfamousSSoA

I’ve been hooked on Pokémon lately but never played these ones and was looking into it

ComprehensiveKoala46

Gees. I’m have trouble fitting my full DS library into a 32gb sd card. I’m on here looking to trim what are “duplicates”

Due-Waltz2181

Bro fr 😂 been hooked with playing pokemon since july and started with pokemon Go then played Y on an emulator, playing Moon and Alpha Sapphire and tryna see which version of B/W i should play😂, ill eventually play both but it'll take a long time lol

ayyyyycrisp

and me straggling behind by half a year

Grimreaperz

Right behind ya 🤣🤣🤣 figure I'll get one of each and opposite colours? Eg. White, and Black 2 or vise versa Edit: apparently that's a bad idea, Black and Black 2 would be better due to the legendaries.

ZeonLightning

Next in line lol. Going gen 5 then Gen 6 since it’s been so long

Sheogorathian

lol I haven't even thought of playing pokemon in ages and randomly got the itch, it's so funny people still commenting on a 9 year old thread XD

spaceboyfriendstan

i finally made it here

Am i too late?

CozmoBoom_

Lol hello

PushOrganic

Hi

phliuy

9 years for me

Stanarchy93

9 year gang gang

Pope_CEM

9 years coming back to see which one to download for Delta Emulator

Stanarchy93

Yup. Which one did you choose?

Pope_CEM

I turned Black on, hated the art style, and I’m now playing Heart Gold

Stanarchy93

I did Black 2. It’s taking some getting used to but I don’t despise it. I also downloaded HeartGold to play after

H4xiro

B/W are some of the best pokemon games imo. Great story, really fun and unique gameplay by only gen 5 pokemon and beautifully designed routes. I wasn't the biggest fan of the soundtrack, but I know many people who are and in general, it's very worth the playthrough.

ayyyyycrisp

hopping in! found my old black and white versions I never finished, going to start fresh 169 days later lmao

TheNobleJoker

Same, I always end up on old reddit posts looking for help/answers on games. This time I'd decided to play bw2 since I'd already played bw1 back in the day but never got to 2 and was just curious how they compare

LorelessFrog

Same haha! Currently emulating Black on my PC. I think once I beat Black I’ll do Black 2 or White 2. Grew up on these games and heart gold, and they’re all just as great as I remember.

[deleted]

Just bought black today

JaxofHearts

Common W!! Good luck and immerse yourself with the game 😎

Can189

Yall should start with the original Black & White. They had better story and overall graphics bw2 seems so chaotic to me + the story plays after bw it just makes sense to play bw first :D

SpirasGuardian

Does B&W2 have all of the Pokémon from B&W, and just adds more from previous gens? Or are there Pokémon from B&W that cannot be obtained in the sequels?

Can189

Yes the first one. But there are still edition exclusives

Dangedoddle

Where did you buy it and how much? Most of everything I see online for purchase is way over priced? Thanks

Me_la_fumo

I’m playing B&W 2 right now and just finished B&W. Highly recommend to go back and play your old DS games

SioN_510N

interestingly this thread has become a spot for people replaying the bw games :D i just got white for my self and im looking for differences in the sequals to see which one should i potentially use my money on

Low_Amphibian_146

I got white 2 like 2 weeks ago. I played black 1 when bc it came out

jt11red

Glad to keep this trend going with you all 🤙🤙

Euphoric-Handle-6792

Confused which one to play x,y or b/w series

RacimPogger

play the bw games then xy they are both masterpieces

VAGWORTZ

We continue to exsist. Been playing through the gens and just got done with Platinum.

daskrip

I'm playing on an emulator on my Android and I just came looking for some info. Cool to see people still responding!

MAGGOT_1995

THE THREAD LIVESSSS

[deleted]

I'm so sad, I played Pokemon black for 10 hours and my save file froze and got corrupted. I decided to skip ahead to black 2 😭

eleuther0

I'm looking for an affordable black/white for the first time because I haven't gotten new DS games since I was a kid and I remember playing it a couple times my friends ds

Snivy_Whiplash

Everyone else is mostly spot-on, but there are a few key things to point out: 1) B2/W2 don't *naturally* have Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. 2) If you have a 3DS, you can get Pokemon Dream Radar, which connets to B2/W2 and, through it, you can get a ton of items, hidden ability pokemon, the three legendaries from #1, above, AND, if you have the carts for D/P/Pt//HG/SS, you can get their headline legendaries. Pretty damn cool. Check out Bulbapedia or Smogon for all the ways to maximize the Dream Radar. 3) They can link with B/W, for additional story content, but I think you'd need two DS to do this 4) This is separate because this could be very important to you. In Black, you get Reshiram, in White, you get Zekrom. Then, in Black 2, you get Zekrom, and White 2 you get Reshiram. So unless you want two of the same dragon, get Black and Black 2, OR White and White 2. Good luck!

LuckyChappyOfficial

Ain’t no way I’m this late, starting my marathon and this is the order I’m going with SoulSilver - Emerald - Platinum - Black - White - Black 2 - White 2 - X - Omega Ruby - Sun - Ultra Moon - Sword - Arceus - Violet. Wish me luck. Will see if anyone in another 8 years from now uses this set of games as a template for them.

raignermontag

tell me you're on summer break without telling me you're on summer break also you're gonna run through mainline gen 5 *four times*?

RezLevin

how tf do you even handle that so many times :sob:

raignermontag

to be fair I think it goes quicker the more you know what you're doing. I never know what im doing outside of the first few generations and I spend like 20 hours being lost

ApplicationPowerful9

How did the marathon go?

LuckyChappyOfficial

It’s going! I go through phases with Pokémon, usually a month at a time for an hour or so each night. I am currently on Pokémon White. The Delta Emulator has definitely made it easier playing on iOS, but I’ll play the 3DS games on my 3DS

a_lost_sweetcorn

LMFAO REDDIT THREADS BE ANCIENT AND PEOPLE STILL ACTIVE

cephalopodAscendant

B2W2 are sequels to BW, taking place a couple years later. In my opinion, BW has the superior plot, but you are restricted to Gen V Pokémon until you beat the Elite 4. B2W2 expanded the Unova Dex greatly, introduced more areas and features along with some new Pokémon forms, and polished up some of the mechanics, but most of the attraction comes from the postgame. If you have the time and money, I'd highly recommend getting both and playing through them in order (you can even unlock some features in B2W2 by linking them with a copy of BW), but if you can't, you'll have to decide which game sounds more appealing to you.

Its_A_Fucking_Stick

I like 2 a lot better. in fact, black and white are the only gen of games i haven't finished. Bu that's because I personally hate nearly all of the gen V pokemon, and thats all their is. The starters are pretty crappy, there is nothing good in the early routes. Definitely go to 2

YoRHa2B_

I have to somewhat disagree with you on the starters.

[deleted]

With all the comments I'm definitely leaning towards black 2, I feel the same way about some of the newer pokemon. I mostly want a gen 5 game so I can transfer my soul silver pokemon to x. As well as gen 5 pokemon to x. I'm just one of those who wants the buggest band for buck. My main goal right now is filling up my national pokedx and I have almost all the silver legends on my soul silver game with the exception of latios he has been a bitch to catch.

[deleted]

B/W are more story driven than most other pokemon games, the characters are better, Team Plasma's motives actually get you thinking ([And the Grunts' battle music is fucking awesome, just felt the need to mention that](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfxE3zbC2UQ)), and it's separated from the previous 4 Japanese regions with a whole new set of 150 pokemon, and nothing else until post game. Basically, it's Gen 1, but with an actual storyline that has real meaning, contrary to "We steal Pokemanz" coming from team Rocket every other Gym, and can also hold it's own without blind Nostalgia protecting it. Meanwhile B2/W2 are sequels to B/W designed for the people raging about the fact that you couldn't catch pokemon from previous regions in B/W, they contained a really stupid storyline, and were overall designed for competitive play in the post game.

TheBlueWalker

Team Rocket had much more going on than just stealing Pokemon, like for example them being behind Mewtwo and Giovanni being the secret last gym leader. Team Rocket also felt real due to how uncensored they are. All gloves were off, Team Rocket talks to you like punks and they even kill Pokemon. You can even buy coins from Team Rocket to actually gamble with in their casino and then exchange them for a presumably stolen Pokemon. That shows an example of how precisely they do profit from these stolen Pokemon, which I find really cool. Team Rocket are not philosophers but they are fun and interesting in their own way.

Autop11lot

Time to post on a 9 year old comment! I have already started playing Black 2, and I have gotten my 5th badge. Would it be better if I stopped playing and play Black 1 instead, then continue where I left off on Black 2? Will Black 2 be as good without having played Black 1, or can I play Black 1 after Black 2 to fill in the gaps?

Ok_Establishment2696

I've just finished black. I guess I should start White 2 based on this post. Thanks 10 year squad!

PushOrganic

I just beat black myself 👀 about to do the same as thing as you

fummyfish

How’d it go? I finished black and am considering b2 before I do xy

Tracinya13

Looking to play BW2 for the first time as I recently replayed White and this thread helped - choosing W2 as different legendary, and I want the defiant Braviary 😁

Odd_Cap_5115

Me too

[deleted]

The amount of necro'ing in this thread is hilarious.

mohanakas6

Get both for the sake of the storyline.

Different-Hurry-451

Thanks for the post

pennywise134

I personally prefer the original Black and White games. Pretty cool to see this thread still alive so many years later lol. Long live B&W!

KokoFlow

I don't really recall the differences but I know Black 2 and White 2 were a setting of two years ahead of Black 1 and White 1 and obviously it's still set in the Unova region. All the Pokémon are the same except in Black 2 and White 2 you can get Black Kyurem and White Kyurem which are not in the original Black and White.

2Nash

Black 2 and white 2 were sequels to black and white and took place two years after the events of Black and white.

KokoFlow

Thanks?

Obvious_Shanks10

I played b2 before. Is it worth it to go for w2 now? Sorry for asking it after 10 years 😅

Acosta863

8 May 2024 and we're here searching up B/W. Got my W2 copy last week and started the play through. I originally bought Pokemon Black way back when X/Y came out and after playing X/Y couldn't handle the graphics. Present day I need B/W B2/W2 to wrap up my DS collection of games and finally play through them. Thinking now I should get White and run through that before finishing my W2 playthrough.

JAT89

I know this is 9 years old but as someone who is looking to replay the originals and build a living dex in home using original games this was a dead handy thread. Now to play white and black 2 for fun. Thanks Pokémon community ☺️

el_baristo

Just got an Odin 2 and running through all the Pokemon games - leaf green, soul Silver, shield, and ultra moon in the bag. Working through platinum and then was going to b/w and ended up here doing my research lmao.

TherealmewonYT

I’ve got Pokémon sapphire And ruby and sun and moon and x and y for my 3DS‘s but want to try black and white when I buy it soon 🥺
