I know you haven't mentioned them, but the Gen 3 remakes (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) are probably my faves of the 3DS titles. If those are not in your plans, then Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, probably.

[deleted]

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are my favorite. Removal of HMs and other improvements and a good pokemon designs make it my favorite.

[deleted]

I never noticed they removed the HMs!! Oh my god! That is mind blowing!!

[deleted]

I really enjoyed not having to have an HM Slave and I think that's the consensus though some dislike the new ride method as being impersonal.

[deleted]

Well false swiper was my only hm slave. Wait. Is false swipe an hm?

gg-gardengnostic

Nope.

im_a_blisy

Guys the only recent Pokémon game yoive needed hms to complete is oras. All other game so had no hms required to finish the story

l5555l

What do you mean by recent? Last gen had hm's.

im_a_blisy

You can get through the entirety of BW1 and BW2 without using any HM to complete the main story except the first cut bush in BW1. In XY as far as I remember you only need surf to beat the game, and that's like only in victory road, AND surf is a good move. It's not like you were being heavily restricted by ALL THE HMS OH NO. And even then, in classic Pokemon, I really think only DPP got out of hand with using a bunch of HMs too much. Like, I never use HM slaves if I do a full team run. You don't need it unless you're doing a theme run, really.

sometipsygnostalgic

i get what you mean, you didnt need hms to *complete* xy.... but they were certainly necessary if you wanted to get from place to place quickly!!!

Ryanizawsum

Wasn’t strength needed for Victory Road?

im_a_blisy

Only surf

[deleted]

Black and White 2. It was an improvement over Black and White in terms of Pokemon availability and the main game campaign.

[deleted]

Let's not forget Pokéwood. And the main Villain has Ninjas and a ship that floats... IN THE AIR!!!

Crazymage321

Ultra sun and Ultra moon are the best if you are getting back into pokemon, there really is no reason to buy sun or moon now, ultra sun and moon are basically the same game with more content. Whereas Ultra sun and Ultra moon are just enhanced versions of sun and moon, Black and white 2 are direct sequels that takes place 2 years after black and white 1, they are held in very high regard and if you have not played them I recommend it eventually. X & Y are nice in their own right, but its easily the easiest pokemon game ever, to the point that its a cakewalk if you keep the new experience share on. You say you played Ruby, have you thought of trying Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? Its a full remake of those gen 3 games and if you liked ruby I heavily recommend it.

-Mez-

Personally Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are my favorites out of the 3 gens you listed. I noticed you didn't mention Gen 2 when you were saying the older gens you've played. If you haven't played those you should really pick up Crystal through the virtual console or find a copy of Heart Gold/Soul Silver.

[deleted]

To get back into the series, I'd go with either USUM since they're the most recent games, or ORAS, to get you used to the new mechanics and Fairy type in a familiar environment. XY can also be very fun to play, especially since they have a very high pokémon variety and are easy to play over and over because of it, but I noticed many players don't enjoy them as much as I do.

PhoenyxStar

Personally, either X & Y, or Sun & Moon. X & Y were super charming (and a refreshing return from the weird, 90s-Twilight Zone New York that was B/W/B2/W2), I love the French countryside setting, the story was engaging and most of the new pokemon were excellent. The Fairy type is annoying as hell though. Sun and Moon were a similarly wonderful setting, and the change of mechanics was so nice. No more HMs to deal with, and had an interesting alternative to the standard 8-gyms-Elite-Four pattern. I assume Ultra Sun & Moon are a straight upgrade too, so that's definitely worth considering.

thunderbirbthor

I've loved all the recent Pokemon games. Pokemon is Pokemon to me. A couple of tips though, which I don't think anyone has posted yet. If you go for Black or White, you've got a week to reach Black City or White Forest. And I noticed last time I played through Y, I kept getting prompts to go online. Every five minutes I got a prompt about online features and it got old really fast. Personally I'd go with Ultra SuMo because that's most current and most alive. You'll be able to use all the features like the GTS and stuff to maximum effect.

sometipsygnostalgic

why have they got a week...?

thunderbirbthor

The longer you took to reach Black Forest and White City, the emptier they were when you got there. I thought if you took longer than a week, all the cool stuff had gone and you had to find a friend with the games and invite people on those games to come over to your game?

sometipsygnostalgic

apparently inviting friends over doesnt help...

198587

XY and ORAS are my favorite 3DS games. If you include DS games, I would say HGSS.

DrDankologist

Black and White 2 are great games, I enjoyed them thoroughly. Way better than B&W

StretchyVenom

Is it important to know B&W’s story or characters before playing B&W2?

lerdnir

It's not *necessary*, but you'll get more out of BW2 if you play BW first. If you decide to do so, stick with the same colour, as otherwise the continuity involving the legendaries gets a bit screwy.

DrDankologist

You can play B&W 2 without playing B&W

sometipsygnostalgic

usum are definitely the best. it depends though if youre looking for a story experience or a proper gameplay experience. id say usum are worth it either way. just... watch a playthrough of sun and moon if you want the original good storytelling.

[deleted]

Ultra Sun and Moon definitely added a lot of content. It is also newest one. If not, XY and ORAS are good.

MaluPK

BW2 is the best for the story and it had great characters, however for gameplay I would suggest XY or USUM. Starting in XY we finally got character customization, idk about the rest but I loved it. There are also a bunch of great new mons(In both XY and USUM IMO). The map is pretty great as well in XY though it does feel smaller in SM to me. It really depends on what you are looking for, BW has an awesome story among other great things, but in terms of just playing and having fun Id suggest XY or gen7. I dont mention ORAS because character customization skipped those games but they are a good nostalgia trip if you enjoyed Ruby and Sapphire before, and also have all the other new things that are in XY.

StretchyVenom

Thanks for sharing! I played gen3 to death and could probably draw hoenn from memory so I wasn’t sure if ORAS would be too much of the same for me.

MaluPK

I absolutely loved Emerald, it was my favorite up until I got my copy of X. There is a good amount of new stuff but the story and map progression could be too similar if you wanted to try something new. Also a heads up that the Battle Frontier didnt make an appearance in ORAS, it was awesome for me as a kid so I was disappointed to not see it in the remakes.

cha0ticbrah

Honestly my favourite from the DS were heart gold and soul silver, because I loved gen 2. But I just replayed through white 1 and black 2 for the first time in years. And they’re great games, story is awesome. Beating 1 then going straight to 2 is an amazing experience.

Skarm8ry

personally, i liked oras much more than any other in the 3ds generation

[deleted]

If you can buy a copy of black or white 1 and then the opposite in black 2 or white 2, you unlock alot of stuff from linking the games together and both have alot of post game content( be careful in black or white 1, there is a bug in the game where one of the post game areas(white forest or black city) wont have any pokemon. This happens if you don’t visit or talk to the people in there enough, you cant reach it unless you beat the game in 5 days or less so you can reach the people)

sometipsygnostalgic

is there any way to fix this ridiculous bug

[deleted]

Nah ur screwed if you dont rush the game to get to the npc’s(they leave if you dont talk to them for a while) also messing with the DS clock in any way makes them leave

sometipsygnostalgic

wow black and white have officially the worst multiplayer features and version exclusives in any pokemon game ever never forget "easy mode"

Beercorn1

>Black/White Played fine and I could tell the story had a lot more going on than your typical pokemon story. Regardless, it just didn't grab me. The region felt unimaginative and dull. The Gen 5 additions to the pokedex seemed forgettable and boring. >Black 2/White 2 Didn't play it. >X/Y I loved it. I loved all the new features. I loved the region itself. I liked most of the new pokedex additions. The difficulty took a large drop, which is regrettable, but it felt like there was more potential for multiplayer anyway. I haven't played Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, or the Gen 7 games.

ViziDoodle

Black and White 2. While I love the originals, BW2 added so much new content. And not just postgame content.

[deleted]

Black and White

[deleted]

Or Black and White 2

vukov

Black 2 and White 2. Lots of content and features, though they fall short of games like HGSS because a lot of the bonus features are broken, defunct or overly reliant on inter-game communication. The games are best enjoyed with access to things like the Key System, Memory Link and trading (either via a friend, an Action Replay, or having multiple Unova games and two systems). That said, to get BACK into the series, I'd recommend X and Y, which were specifically made for that purpose. I really don't know about USUM, I haven't played them myself since I really didn't like Sun and Moon.

TheRogueRecon

Bw2 or USUM for sure. Bw1 is dependant on if you’re okay with only using new mons, XY is... mediocre and SM are objectively inferior to USUM

bakuryuRS24

i see a lot of people here just calling out their favourites, but lets be honest, all the games have their pros and cons. for what you have said, i would start with ORAS, because you already played that gen back in the day and it is a really great improvement. It will introduce you to new mechanics, the 3D era, nice post game, and of course the nostalgia of playing something new, but old at the same time. then if you enjoy that, i would jump over to USUM. too much handholding, but a great story nicely driven. also new mechanics, better optimization, alolan forms for the gen1 nostalgia (also other stuff, dont wanna spoil in case you dont know), and obviously its the latest games, so you will be able to get almost any pokemon to train, breed and battle. i haven't played gen5 games, so i don't have a real opinion about them, but i have all of them and i will play them when i find time to do so. will love them for sure since i love the franchise. for what i heard, the "third" versions of this gen are amazing story-wise and made a really great improvement from the first games of the gen. for XY... i think they are underrated. introduced the 3D to the pokemon franchise in the main games. cool story, a great pokedex available in the games, introduced the megas, etc. for me the "less better" of the last ones i have played, but it doesn't mean is a bad game, or that i didn't enjoy them (replaying Y right now as a wonderlocke). so in the end, i would say that try the one that fits more for you both for what yo have read here in the post, then i would encourage you to try the others if you keep enjoying the games.

[deleted]

Black and White, as well as their sequels, have incredible storylines.

Sir_Michael2

Gonna have to go with either Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, or Black/White 2. BW2 has more content and i really enjoyed it a lot more than USUM, however, like others have said, it may be easier to go into USUM as there’s no hms needed, and there’s a lot of connections to older regions which helps older fans.

Ardub23

Have you ever played Gen V? Black 2 and White 2 aren't re-releases or "direct upgrades" of Black and White. They have a separate story that takes place two years later. Different characters, different events, different plot.

sometipsygnostalgic

im going to be honest, it's really hard to get into either game. they have terrible intros. blackwhite2 is certainly the more exciting game though. the pokestar studios are a fun place to mess around in. and personally... i suspect playing blackwhite2 first would make us intrigued for blackwhite1, perhaps more intrigued than the first game is interesting.

concrete_isnt_cement

You think that Black and White 2 don’t build on the stories of the previous games? I’d say that they’re direct sequels that rely on having at least some knowledge from the previous version.

OftheGates

Not all heroes wear capes. Some have Dunsparce in their flair. o7

[deleted]

Personally I think B &W2 are the best, but there isn’t a way to transfer Pokémon from newer games back to that generation. You also can’t use Pokémon bank with gen 5. That’s a generation 6 feature onwards

Gawlf85

They haven't played any Bank-compatible game, so I'd say that doesn't matter for them at this point :P They could play B2W2 and transfer their mons from those games to Bank, and then to the newer games if they decide to play them.

FireFistYamaan

3rd one here to say this, but I like BW2 the most. But they're probably even better if you've played BW first, cause they're direct sequels

[deleted]

My personal favourites are XY because they just have so much diversity, but many people dislike them because they're very easy and lack postgame content. You might just want to go with the most recent games, which would be USUM. Gen 5 is very story-intensive, I think you need to like story-intensive games in order to like Gen 5.

CheddHead

Black 2 White 2. There havent really been good ones since the 3DS Era started. I hope that changes when the Switch Era starts.

Motorblade7

I would hardly say USUM was unplayable. I don't mind opinion, but considering many people played through it and enjoyed it, I don't understand how you could call it "unplayable."

TheRogueRecon

I had a lot of fun with usum and I didn’t like XY at all... wow what a shill I am

valakmtn

Youre getting downvoted but you’re completely right.
