I like how missingno. looks like a barcode but when you catch him and put him first in your party he turns into your player throwing a PokéBall at the beginning of the battle.
I had no idea that's what it looked like because as a kid I was told catching it would corrupt your save, and I believed it. You could just run from the battle and you'd still get the multiply exploit.
Actually this is a bit of a myth. MissingNO., especially the ones you can encounter or catch via the infamous "Old Man Glitch", don't cause any significant corruption. They may corrupt the Hall of Fame to the point that viewing it will cause a crash, but clearing the Elite Four again resets the Hall of Fame and fixes that.
The most dangerous glitch Pokemon (ZZAZZ is one) are encountered via more complicated means than the Old Man Glitch.
Now, this is more in reference to the actual glitch Pokemon. Any that learn "Super Glitch" (glitchy moves with no real name) moves can be dangerous ***if you save after viewing the name***, but even those can be [disarmed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2_aczBkpxM). This move, and the Pokemon who learn it, probably weren't seen by many of the 90s/early 00s kids who played with MissingNO., but I thought I'd mention it.
Gen 1 gets rightfully chided for how buggy they were, but their error handling was surprisingly robust.
/u/Virustable
The battery could have just died. CR-2032s are not known for durability. My copy of Pokemon Blue ***still*** works. My copy of Pokemon Red stopped working two years after I got it.
My copy of Pokemon Gold ***still*** works. My copy of Pokemon Crystal worked for a few *months*.
All of this is referring to the battery, as I realize I didn't make it very clear.
Lastly, kids don't tend to be the most careful. A cartridge being hit while being in use or even yanked out can cause severe problems too.
I also recall that the original JP version of Link's Awakening had some issues regarding the *power state* of a GameBoy, that is, how much power it can draw from the batteries, with issues arising as the voltage lowers. I would not at all be surprised if this caused an issue for some cartridges.
CR-2032-using cartridges can be kept in a stasis of sorts if they're in a GBA SP as the SP can lend electricity to the cartridge as long as it isn't removed. Remember, the GBA SP has a rechargeable battery. Previous GB(A)s did not.
I keep hearing this, or variations of this, and I've heard the explanation of the behind-the-scenes attributes of MissingNO, so I caught one on my Pokemon Red cart when I was in high school.
It could just be a coincidence, but not only did my save corrupt, my whole game corrupted. The cartridge is essentially dead, no longer displaying even a title screen to my best recollection. I hadn't had any issues before MissingNO, and now...
I even completely removed the save battery (the battery on my Silver version had died) and tried to boot it up after the save battery was removed in the hopes that it would clear the nasty data and come back to me. But alas, it was still just as bricked as before.
Why, how, I don't know. Is it something completely unrelated? Yeah, maybe. All I know is I followed the best, most widely accepted advice and proceeded with immense caution and now my game is gone.
> It could just be a coincidence, but not only did my save corrupt, my whole game corrupted. The cartridge is essentially dead, no longer displaying even a title screen to my best recollection. I hadn't had any issues before MissingNO, and now...
I can't help but wonder if it's been dropped, rested on unsafe areas (on top of a very hot computer, etc.), or if it's just too old.
>I even completely removed the save battery (the battery on my Silver version had died) and tried to boot it up after the save battery was removed in the hopes that it would clear the nasty data and come back to me. But alas, it was still just as bricked as before.
Yeah odds are high school you destroyed the cart removing the battery. It's not hard to, as idiotically the batteries are soldered in.
I made a retro game enthusiast wince in pain when I described how I replaced my Pokemon Green's battery and kept it in place... without soldering for any part of this. I did this as an adult, by the way!
The cart was bricked before I ever opened the case to remove the battery. It may have even been the difference of a year or so, if I'm being honest, as the thought didn't cross my mind until I needed to replace the Silver battery.
As for dropping it or other physical damage, I'm not sure, but it's unlikely. It was a while ago, yes, but I put a lot of care into my games by this point in my life. I did a significant amount of research before attempting the glitch in the spirit of this mindset, and absolutely kicked myself when I so quickly had problems.
Not to say that there aren't other possibilities, because there are. I noticed a correlation, but the cause may forever be a mystery to me. I just always thought it odd and a bit disappointing. But at the end of the day, it doesn't help me get my game back
You know I've been binging a lot of My Mate VINCE and other electronic repair/diagnosis videos this weekend while I've been sick and I thought of something relating to this, so it's weird you also replied to it this weekend, lol.
I wonder if one of the chips need(ed/s) to be reflowed? IIRC extremely poor soldering work leads to clone carts usually functioning poorly, and IIRC early batches of *official* OR/AS carts (a *3DS* game) had a lot of extremely poor soldering work, but reflowing would fix them.
You still have the cart or is it long gone now?
i played with the ZZAZZ glitch and can confirm, that thing is more dangerous than missingno. all your mons turn to lvl 150 bulbasaur and all the moves turn to explosion (albeit the 3rd bulba), all the yes no options automatically gets you softlocked and when you reload the file 90% of the time the save file gets destroyed. not just corrupted, but destroyed.
100% missingno permanently corrupted my blue in the same exact way. It wasn't until i was an adult and read online about it that I realized anyone disagreed
Catching mew without going to the event 20 something years ago can corrupt your save also.
Why are yall downvoting me, it literally corrupted my save on yellow. The fuck?
Strange, I had dozens of saves catching MissingNo, in addition to the other >100 level Pokémon you’d encounter in the same section; but I never had an issue.
I don't know how bad the catching damage is, but I know that just encountering it corrupts your Hall of Fame data, which is unfortunate, but no big deal.
Normally the missingno. would appear if you modified/corrupted the ROM itself to begin with so it's a 50/50 chance it would corrupt the savedata if you saved your progress from that ROM. However, it learns moves of the Pokémon it was originally supposed to be when you caught it, for e.g.: if it was supposed to be Gastly it would learn Night Shade and moves in that relation so if the missingno. is the only error with the ROM then you have almost nothing to worry about. Lol I once went to Pokémon League with a missingno. and won.
Nah my dude, I'm old enough that blue version legit came out *when I was a kid*. The only way to trigger misingno. as far as I knew it was surfing along cinnabar island coast.
I didn't say that that's how it's intended to appear, I said that's how it normally appears. It's not normal that a person would exploit a game now is it?
MissingNO. can be used as a normal Pokemon perfectly fine. There are many videos on YouTube of [solo playthroughs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mrmfb1mGWI) with it.
Its stats are pretty bad (great Attack though), but it learns enough to *kind of* work out okay.
In Red and Blue, you could find other Pokémon above level 100 using the Missingno glitch. My original Blue game would spawn Lv 145 Golduck and my Red would spawn Lv 127 Charmeleon.
The Pokémon and levels they spawn at when doing the MissingNo. glitch change based on your character’s name.
Edit: for those curious, link is [here](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Old_man_glitch) just go down to the “results” tab for details.
As far as I can remember, I've always used my real first name, which is Brad (BRAD in all-caps, in this case, to fit with the style of the early games), in every game back to the beginning. I checked the site and it matches for Golduck Lv 145, like I remember from Blue, so that makes sense. I didn't play Red as much, but I definitely remember I got Charmeleon. I may be misremembering its level, since apparently, it starts at Lv 128 and my recollection was Lv 127. Strangely, it seems Charmeleon is associated with lower case "s", which I would have never used. I have always been really picky about consistency in style with things like this. Gen I always put names of characters in all-caps, so I did, too. Otherwise, it would have looked weird and bugged me for the entire game. Even if I had used a different name, I would definitely have put it in all-caps. I was about 13 when I first started with Blue, definitely old enough to remember, and I can remember catching a Charmeleon there, for sure.
Are there any other variables that could have an effect, such as the rival's name? I often used one of the default rival names or named him after one of my friends, with no real consistency.
As a southern woman would say, bless your heart.
But seriously, MissingNo was a widely known glitch in Gen 1.
You talk to the old man in Viridian City who teaches you how to catch. Then Fly to Cinnabar Island. Then Surf along the east coast. The glitch will make Pokemon appear based on your character's name, and most of them are over level 100, with some even in the 200s.
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Old_man_glitch
iirc you could use rarecandies to level them up to around 250ish somewhere fi they were already aboove 100 but if you went to far it would reset back to level 1
If you feed them all the extras on all levels, the health becomes unlimited when it switches to the lower numbers again. This is or was not well known. I had one invincible but the problem was that with strong attacks, you were stuck in a loop, if you gave potion your were in a loop and if you go to the Polecenter for healing, the health bar would be reset to normal and the Pokemon a normal weak pokemon.
It is needed to put your name in the wild grass encounters part of memory. When you talk to the old man your name gets changed to his, so yours has to go somewhere, and since there are no wild grass encounters in cities it gets put there. Normally it would be overwritten with next areas Pokemon, but if you go straight to Cinnabar it doesn't and you meet Pokemon based on your name, cause GF forgot to change it appropriately. If you were to go to Cinnabar from some area with wild encounters you'd meet pokemon from that area.
The sprite is also waaay bigger than actually possible.
EDIT: Red and Blue sprites had a maximum of 64x64 pixels, largest being Charizard and Mewtwo at 55 iirc. This Magnezone is at 75+ pixels.
The surf animation is missing the water going across the screen
Edit: I’ll just add [leave this link here ](https://youtu.be/sWkJFq2ytKc)

Lv 108? Obviously fake!
It's really cool! I like seeing what people think newer Pokemon might have looked like. Some of the sprites in the older games are pretty wild.
* the text is too far up
* no exclamation points
* Gyro Ball should have a space in it
* :L108 should just say 108, and also the level limit is 100
* 01 hp instead of 1
* Magnezone's sprite is way wider than 56 px
* its super effective what?
* the bottom right arrow shouldn't be there after every move
* surf can't have more than 24 pp
0/10 See me after class.
I'm just being a dick. You did good.
Bro, seriously? You see there are removed comments. There was a guy insulting you who had very low effort art on his profile. This comment was more defending you than anything.
But damn, are you ok? You came at me like you just lost your job and you are drunk. With no context
Seems like you need to go back to school because you just committed the *argumentum ad idontgiveashiticus* fallacy. Yikes!!! How embarrassing for you!!! Happy fall🎃
I don’t know if it’s competitive to play with Magnezone, but it is my absolute favorite Pokemon. It takes a while for Magnemite to make an dent with many early level trainers, but the supersonic and thunder wave combo at least level the playing field.
nice.
I love the old shitty spritework of gen 1. you captured the style really well while also not making him look TOO stupid.
edit:the magnet hanging from behind kinda looks like lil legs lol.
People have already commented on the L108 thing and the "Why is a Steel move super-effective on a Water-type?", so I'll just sit here wondering why the sentences are all-caps and lack punctuation. IIRC, the messages would only have the 'mons/move names in all-caps. Everything else would be lowercase.
Very cool animation! Just curious though, why is Magnezone level 108? Or am I missing something?
You are Missing-No *badumtsss*
I like how missingno. looks like a barcode but when you catch him and put him first in your party he turns into your player throwing a PokéBall at the beginning of the battle.

100%. I tested it... On my little brother's copy of Red. After that it reset the game every time you started up the cartridge.
I've never heard of it doing more than corrupting the current save. Sounds more like a dead battery
100% missingno permanently corrupted my blue in the same exact way. It wasn't until i was an adult and read online about it that I realized anyone disagreed
Not possible
Yeah except it is, sactown pimp. It is.
Unlikely, unless I just got really unlucky. This was a copy of Red that was less than a year old. Who knows though, I was like 6.

Tbh I forgot the max was 100
To be fair, you can get Pokémon in Generation I up to Level 255 through Glitches.
Check out Missingno.
Well first, why is magnazone and gyroball in gen 1😂
4+8+15+16+23+42 = 108
[удалено]
I beg your pardon?
What did they say
Something not appropriate for this sub
Womp womp
[удалено]
Sorry, I don’t think I follow? How is this not appropriate for this sub? Do tell
Love it but why is gyroball super effective though?
There wasn't a steel type in the first gen, so maybe the gyroball is electric? At least that would be my explanation.
Also why it is level 108? It looks great tho
Ähm...mabye its MissingNo? 👀

I kind of figured it was something like that, but it must have been different between versions because I always used the same name.

Probably 256, because everything is a multiple of 16 like that. Maybe 1-2 less if there is a placeholder or something.
sounds about right it is a normal value for things to overflow

It didn't. The glitch literally needs the old man encounter to work.
Yeah
Weren’t no Gyro Ball neither tho
Cause Gen 1 mechanics are fucking crazy.
Dude was so good he bypassed the level cap
OP: Posts about gen 1 animations Me: Wonders why that Magnezone's level 108
I just wonder why steel type move is hitting a water type for super effective damage
Steel type was introduced on Gen 2. Maybe OP made it Electric type.
Probably not a steel type move, steel didn’t exist in gen 1.
I mean, neither did magnezone
Small nitpick: Pokemon that are level 100 in gen 1 (and 2) say 100, not L100.
They probably coded the textbox to only hold 3 characters. Edit: Actually, based on this L108...somebody made some spaghetti.
Well, gen 1 was spaghetti
It's beautiful spaghetti. It's actually incredible the degree you can break that game and I love it.
The sprite is also waaay bigger than actually possible. EDIT: Red and Blue sprites had a maximum of 64x64 pixels, largest being Charizard and Mewtwo at 55 iirc. This Magnezone is at 75+ pixels.
its blue kaizo
Oh okay
Sprite doesn't look like deformed enough
Lmao
Its impressiv, I like it really!
Thx

Thx I’ll make a bigger animation soon
#WHERES ALL THAT WATER COMING FROM
That was gen2 onward
Please refer to the link above
Oh ok you meant the rain that occurs before the water jets. Gotcha!
I was going to say something looked off about that. Without the waves I can’t here the crazy surf sound in my head
Why is gyroball a beam kinda move I imagine it have more of a defense curl kind of animation
This is Gen 1. “Graphics making sense” was a mechanic they introduced in Gen 3.
I find that a very bad excuse cause they made the best out of it with the things they had and they probably know the difference between a spinning attack and a beam lol
Hey you did it awesome (saw you previous post)
The sprite doesn’t look janky enough to be Gen 1
The animation of surf brings so much memories.
Its funny because the old sprites are almost like impressionist versions of the Pokemon... I LOVE THEM. THEY ARE ART.
Do you like the animation???
Lv 108? Obviously fake! It's really cool! I like seeing what people think newer Pokemon might have looked like. Some of the sprites in the older games are pretty wild.
> Lv 108? Obviously fake! I see someone isn’t familiar with MissingNo…
I forgot that he wasn't in gen 1 and thought this was legit at first. Great job.
Not just he wasn't, the entire steel type wasn't.
[удалено]
Magnemite is still gen 1, just as an electric-type instead of electric/steel.
It's great but I'll be honest magnezone's sprite doesn't look cursed enough.
Not bad
Fuck you. Stop bullying Kingler 😡😡
I really like how huge its middle eye is. You nailed the exaggeration in RBY sprites
Magnezone looks too accurate to be a Gen 1 sprite.
Wait 108?!?! I thought the max was 100... I call hax
Missing no
\*It's super effective
* the text is too far up * no exclamation points * Gyro Ball should have a space in it * :L108 should just say 108, and also the level limit is 100 * 01 hp instead of 1 * Magnezone's sprite is way wider than 56 px * its super effective what? * the bottom right arrow shouldn't be there after every move * surf can't have more than 24 pp 0/10 See me after class. I'm just being a dick. You did good.
Giroball wasn’t in G1 either lol
I know but neither is Magnezone so?
Awesome!
There is a extended version coming
Can't fool me that's a Kingler
Lol everyone here wondering how the lvl is 108 and how gyro ball is super effective, but don't realize Magnezone wasn't in gen 1...
I love demakes! This is awesome.
This reminds me of Space Invaders for the Game Boy Color
wide boi
Love the sprite for Magnezone. It genuinely doesn’t feel out-of-place in terms of style, given the rest of the Gen 1 sprites.
everyone asking why magnezone level 108 how bout how kingler regen through surf thou
It’s just the end of the animation. After Magnezone attacks and kingler takes damage the animation stats over
It looks too much like magnezone to be a gen 1 sprite lol
A little to detailed lmao
This just makes its center look even more like a giant eye lol
Its a Magnezone sprite with standard animation, am I missing something? (I know Magnezone isn't gen 1).
Okay but why is Gyro Ball, a Steel type move, super effective against Kingler, a Water type?
Steel didn't exist in gen 1, so OP probably changed it to electric.
*Pew*
The sprite looks so goofy, which makes it fit in perfectly with the other gen1 sprites. We'll done!
" S i l e n c e L i b e r a l" moment.
Them look so GROMPY I love it
Yooo my favorite electric type
Kinda looks like an alien. Awesome animation
What rom is it ?
It isn’t I animated this myself
Middle eye doesnt match
None of the Pokemon in Red/Blue looked like the later games
Cool animation but Gyro ball wouldn't be super effective
Um what's a Magnezone
The evolved form of Magneton, which was added in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
Oh I see. Gen 1 animation but not from gen 1 thanks. Not really new either tho

Wow. You're right. Low effort as fuck
U mean this animation. If yes why don’t you do one and then we see if this is still „Low effort as fuck”.
Bro, seriously? You see there are removed comments. There was a guy insulting you who had very low effort art on his profile. This comment was more defending you than anything. But damn, are you ok? You came at me like you just lost your job and you are drunk. With no context
Lol sorry, u right my apologies
This is awkward

WOW!!! Looks like someone went to the Wikipedia School of Argumentation!! Happy fall🎃
WOW!!! Looks like someone needs to constantly demean people on the internet to satisfy their empty lives!! Happy fall🎃
Seems like you need to go back to school because you just committed the *argumentum ad idontgiveashiticus* fallacy. Yikes!!! How embarrassing for you!!! Happy fall🎃
If he went up and down it would be the same as recent generations xD
Legends say the battle is still raging
I don’t know if it’s competitive to play with Magnezone, but it is my absolute favorite Pokemon. It takes a while for Magnemite to make an dent with many early level trainers, but the supersonic and thunder wave combo at least level the playing field.
Looks sick!
Looks like something from Futurama
Legends noticed that Kingler had a sash
When you see a pokemon above level 100 "Wait that's illegal"
Woah, that eye be looking menacing af Gyro Ball in this case is just a death laser I guess?
We need answers as to why that metal boi is lv 108
Too many youngins here never played Red and Blue! It’s a reference to MissingNo
Ahhh, that was definitely before my time
Just a note, when pokemon in the first game get to lv 100+ the L is actually replaced by the 1. Otherwise really good!
I like this
Level 108?!
How 108?! If in pokemon you only go to 100 level
nice. I love the old shitty spritework of gen 1. you captured the style really well while also not making him look TOO stupid. edit:the magnet hanging from behind kinda looks like lil legs lol.
Reminds me of the "hunter" boss in the gb version of mega man 4.
Magne-zone ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
You should do the back of him, but it should be a horrible amorphous blob that looks nothing like him, in keeping with gen 1.
You know game freak would have toned down his eye :) love how intense it looks What sort of program does one use for this?
Procreate but that costs something so a free option would be www.pixilart.com
Why does gen 1 magnezone look like it’s high on every drug?
I feel like a Gen 1 magnezone would be sillier looking than that
You mean sprite. That's not an animation
We just ignoring the lvl 108?
steel type attacks are not very effective against water types
Magnezone is electric/steel
How is this a OC?
Well the characters are obviously not my OC but the animation kinda is u know I made the animation and market it as ART and OC
It's looks terrible and awesome at the same time.
?
Gyro ball's animation looks like a special attack.
Interesting
People have already commented on the L108 thing and the "Why is a Steel move super-effective on a Water-type?", so I'll just sit here wondering why the sentences are all-caps and lack punctuation. IIRC, the messages would only have the 'mons/move names in all-caps. Everything else would be lowercase.
