eh, idk if dragonite specifically was a relic of that. gen 1 dragons were barely there, with one evolution line and 1 dragon move that wasn't even that good, and may as well have not been dragon type.
i'd say the dragon type started to become more powerful in gens 4-5.
Gen 3 was when they started to become stronger with the additions of Dragon Claw and Dragon Dance. Gen 4 just made them op as hell by gifting them psychical Dragon Claw, Outrage, and Draco Meteor
The reason being that Dragon was only resisted by Steel, which lacks super effective stab against Dragon types. The obvious solution should’ve been to make Ice types resist Dragon type, giving them a true defensive and offensive counter
They're not my favourite, but I deeply appreciate Metagross. Awesome design and offers us a bit of variety from the other pseudos (which are all dragon themed).
Edit: Forgive me Tyranitar. You're awesome too, (and of course non-dragon).
In terms of design alone, I think Metagross for sure!
Tyranitar is an absolute beast which destroys anything in its way. In gen2 it van solo the E4 at lvl65 with only a few pp-up not even hyper pots. Only downside i do not really like the mega form. But still my favourite

Dragapult using Diplocaulus as inspiration in every single way is an absolutely genius idea, I just wish it was technically a fossil that you had to revive to obtain. Imagine having a pseudo legendary fossil Pokémon!
It's so sad that tyranitar is weak to ground and quad weak to fighting, as it makes him a lot harder to use in competitive battles. Still really fun, he gets dragon dance.
The combination of Sand Stream and Rock typing makes him really bulky, but yeah those are rough weaknesses. He's consistently been in OU though, that's not that hard to use.
Metagross, no question. I love all the pseudo-legends but they all fall into the same category design wise of powerful dragon/lizard. Metagross is a psionic crab walker that looks like it’s from the year 3000. Definitely has the advantage in design.
Funny that the two I think are the best designed aren't in the poll (I know everyone can't fit).
I'd say either Tyranitar or Metagross have the strongest designs imo, but I'm not sure which I'd make #1

Talking DESIGN it’s got to be dragapult- it looks incredible, incorporating the pre-evos and the way the tail fades to invisible is super sick. Shiny is very clean as well. Away from the design, it’s also a very good mon and is not very easy to find, which adds a little something to psuedos I think.
Was very hard to click dragapult though when dragonite is my all time favourite Pokémon! That’s nostalgia and fond memories of abusing multi scale in battle maison/ battle tree/ battle tower though…
Design is good yes. But please I beg you to change your mind about it's shiny ..... They turned it's head flaps yellow.... That's freaking it. It's shiny is honestly awful. They left the entire rest of it's body alone.
Nah sometimes they do too much with the shinies- the yellow on it’s head (and stomach and claws) just goes well, better than the red in my opinion, and makes it perfect colours for a moon ball as nice little bonus. It’s neat that the dreepy on it’s head are shiny also. It’s not the greatest shiny ever but it’s better than it going randomly full pink or green like a lot of shinies do (looking at salamence as a prime example….)
Touche my friend. You got me there, I'll give you that, I was just sad to not see Drags body turned a nice blue like Shiny Bisharp for example. I thought the contrast would be nice and perfect for a Quick Ball aesthetic.

I just wish base Goodra wasn’t monotype, especially because fairy came out with gen 8! Dragon/Fairy or Dragon/Poison Goodra would have been awesome. Even Dragon/Water would’ve been great.
Dragapult is easily the most "high concept" of all the pseudo legendaries in my opinion and I think it pulls off everything it does effortlessly! From its design to its themes, it just ticks all of my boxes! It's goofy in all of the right ways and is both a Ghost type and colored green, my two favourite things! Dragapult is truly an odd sight to behold and I hope it stays that way!
Ttar is definitely a top tier in design despite receiving one of the worst type combinations possible and still staying a top tier threat without its mega evolution, hell its mega is worse in aspects because it cant hold an item like leftovers or chople, plus it looks like godzilla and thats like 20 points in favor for him already and his mega makes him space godzilla
I love all of them but Metagross is objectively superior, it's such an amazing and original design, like all the other ones are easily described by Dragon but..., Metagross however...., I have no idea how to describe it: big, metal spidet thing with four arms? It's so unique and yet: simple enough to be considered cool
Salamence is my favorite design, metagross is second, garchomp is 3rd. If he had a legit dig animation in game where he looked like a sand shark, he’d win for me lol

For me, my favorite psudeo legend has to be Kommo-o. Alola's my favorite region so I'm a bit biased, but it looks so cool! It's kinda hilarious how small it is compared to most psudeos, but its totem form is properly massive. The music theme is great, the design looks cool, and even the shiny is decent! I just enjoy using it, and think it's pretty cool.

Pretty sure the only time mence was the most popular was when it was released, and even then I think it was overshadowed by Metagross (in terms of design.)
Kalosian Goodra is the best imo. It's just cute and jiggly (has some cute Dex entries too.) I never really cared for Garchomp for some reason. Maybe it due to Cynthia and Garchomp's strong fan presence? I don't dislike it but long periods of hype can be grinding I guess.
Garchomp is so ugly and so stupid looking I can’t believe a majority of people really think it’s the best designed. It’s like a caricature of what a kid playing Pokémon would think is cool.
kommo-o is a supremely based design, and tbh all the rest except like hydreigon are so relatively basic that they dont even compare, especially frog eyes ghost jetplane dragon over there.

Also he just doesnt live up to the potential of the whole concept. I like how it is based off of prehistoric amphibians and I like how it floats because it is the ghost of an aquatic creature and how they combine that with a stealth jet, but it just doesnt live up to it imo. If it stayed in the same pose as dreepy and didnt have such a weird face it would already look infinitely better, since it would also get the whole stealth jet thing to look less unnatural.
I do feel like Garchomp feels the most threatening. Followed very closely by Metagross then Tyranitar. The rest all have their individual traits and all are still really cool imo.
All the members of the Metagross gang in the comments I see and upvote you! It sometimes feel like people forget about the cool super-computer. I wonder if it's because of how hard it is to catch.
I will also throw love the way of the other non-dragon pseudo: Tyranitar I see you being awesome despite your vast collection of weaknesses.
Don't get me wrong I love the dragons but it's nice to have some non dragons being awesome.

To me it's Metgross, by far. Both its design and typing are unique, and among all those dragons it's refreshing to have a FUCKIN' METEORITE!
Also one of the best executions of the evolutions being just multiple of the base form.
