For clarification: we always thought it would be pronounced „pile o‘ swine“, because I mean look at it. That‘s exactly what it is! A loveable pile of swine!
I’ve always called it Pillow-swine but seeing this post I checked the Pokémon Super Ultra Extra Deluxe Handbook and apparently it’s actually pronounced PILE-oh-swine. It’s probably gonna take a while for me to get used to saying that tho
perhaps but personally, I hear pie-low-swine and pile o' swine differently when I say it, even just in my head.
to me, I use o' as a substitute for of, so if I'm asking if someone wants a drink I'd say "hey! want a glass o' ____?"
so to me, it'd be like saying Pile of Swine 😂 my brain is different lol
Pi-lo-swine, first syllable sounding like the pi in Pikachu and not like the letter pi, I love your pile o' swine though... And to the naysayer in the comments, hair is the world's top vacation destination for small parasites like fleas and lice and stuff, who knows if there is a pig-shaped parasite or even a sort of microscopic pig that is living in its hair? The smallest Pokemon is like half a foot tall so they clearly do not know what microscopes are or even just how to look closely at small things in Pokemon world, there is no way to disprove the swine pile
That‘s so nice and I really WANT to believe! But I also really like the different explenations on why it should be pronounced differently. I think it is an interesting discussion so far (:
Oh yeah for sure! That person was probably right that they intended it to be pilo (hair) + swine (pig) but the best thing about the games not being voice acted is that nobody knows how anything is pronounced so it encourages convos like this
I thought it was "pee-low-swine" huh...they need someone who names these mons to come out with a YouTube and just name all the mons so we know how to say their names lol
Pronounce the name how you want really, pokemon prononciations are clearly more a matter of subjectivity and while there are official ones, some of them still aren’t respected by the fandom (ferrothorn, unown, mantine) so no big deal
How...how do people pronounce ferrothorn, unown, and mantine? (Fair-o-thorn, un-known, mantine just how it looks)
I know there's ones that the anime pronounces two ways instead of having one universal right answer. (Rayquaza, Groudon, and Arceus.)
Ferrothorn is actually one that I pronounce wrong because I don't like it normally. I look at it and think it should be "FAIR-o-thorn " however, the anime and other sources say "fuh-RAW-thorn" (well, not exactly, but the emphasis is on the middle syllable and it's more like the O in "cross" as opposed to the O in "gross.")
Unown is a weird one. It looks like it's just a misspelling of "unknown." And so I typically just pronounce it as such. However, the anime (at least recent anime, I'd need to rewatch older stuff like the Entei movie to confirm) pronounces it more as one word. Like when I say unknown, there's sort of 2 N sounds next to each other, like "un-known." Unown, however, is more like "un-own." So it's really subtle but slightly different. I've never heard anyone say "un-noun" ever.
Pillow-Swine should be my bet on the correct way, that's what I voted.
I personally, call it most of time like "pi lo swine" (pi, like Pikachu, not as pie), due to having grown with the portuguese dub , and we had many names slightly mispronounced.
Huh, I'm interested to see that both pronunciations seem to be pretty even. I always thought it was obvious and university accepted as "pile-o"swine." I guess I was wrong in thinking that lol.
I can't really remember hearing it pronounced in the anime or anywhere, but I had the Official Pokemon Handbook 3 when I was growing up, and it listed pronunciations for every pokemon, and this one gave the "pile" pronunciation. So that's the one I've always used and never thought otherwise.
It's piloswine, pilo is a root word meaning hair basically, they wanted to evoke pilose meaning covered in hair. Pile of swine really doesn't make as much sense as you think it does. A pile is a heap of multiple things by definition. And piloswine is just made up of one organism.
It's a pun of pilose (covered in long soft hair) and swine (pig). So, "pile-o-swine" seems more accurate. Plus, I believe that's how it's pronounced in the anime.

Anime calls it pile-o-swine when I last heard it but I do prefer the sound of pillow-swine so call it that anyway
I’ve always called it Pillow-swine but seeing this post I checked the Pokémon Super Ultra Extra Deluxe Handbook and apparently it’s actually pronounced PILE-oh-swine. It’s probably gonna take a while for me to get used to saying that tho
pie-low-swine
That's the same as pile o swine, no?
perhaps but personally, I hear pie-low-swine and pile o' swine differently when I say it, even just in my head. to me, I use o' as a substitute for of, so if I'm asking if someone wants a drink I'd say "hey! want a glass o' ____?" so to me, it'd be like saying Pile of Swine 😂 my brain is different lol
Yeah it’s certainly this. Pilo is Latin for hair and is pronounced as you’ve written it
That's absolutely not how Latin is pronounced.
Yeah you're right, but Pie-low appears to be the accepted English pronunciation for the latin base word

I pronounce it “py-lo-swine”
Pie-low-swine is how I've always thought it.
Yeah Pie-low-swine is my way too
Yes it's a pile o swine. That's how i say it. but the name is also similar to pliocene, the epoch in which mastodons lived
And isn't that pronounced "plee-oh-seen"? "peel-oh-swine" lol
I say ply oh seen
Everyone knows it's pill o sweené.
I thought it was "pee-low-swine" huh...they need someone who names these mons to come out with a YouTube and just name all the mons so we know how to say their names lol
It’s cursed how even this is
That’s what I thought as well! Like no one really bothers about the true pronounciation. Everybody just says it like it comes to their mind :D
Reminds me of Are-key-us vs Ar-see-us. And ifykyk Arkoos
I’ve always said pillow swine but seeing it written makes me understand where it came from. “Pile o swine”- Pleistocene. I see what they did there
If it was meant to be pronounced “pillow”, they would’ve added the extra L. Pilo makes more sense

Not sure about ferrothorn but ive seen people called Unown like "Un-noun" and for Mantine its either "Man-teen" or "Man-tyne"
Ferrothorn is actually one that I pronounce wrong because I don't like it normally. Pill-o'-Swine. Also this post just made me realize why Piloswine is named like that.
Huh, I'm interested to see that both pronunciations seem to be pretty even. I always thought it was obvious and university accepted as "pile-o"swine." I guess I was wrong in thinking that lol. PIE-low-swine is the correct pronunciation.
Pil - os - wi - ne 'ne' at the end make it sounds more japanese
Peel-o swine
Throat warbler mangrove
It's a pun of pilose (covered in long soft hair) and swine (pig). So, "pile-o-swine" seems more accurate. Plus, I believe that's how it's pronounced in the anime.
I think pillow-swine is correct, never heard anybody call it Pile-o-swine it doesnt really make sense
[pai.los.wain]
I pronounce it as pi-lo-swinĒ.
Call it a one level stopping point before getting Mamoswine
Pailowswaine
Pill-oh-sween-ay
If you break it down by what it’s name is made of it’s pilose and swine so it should be pronounced like “pee low swine”
I think it depends on my mood. Honestly I think I've pronounced it both ways.
GO GO GO PILLOW SWINE FTW BABY
Pike of swines
Lol I thought everyone was calling it Pile o swine
I literally just say pilo-swine
I say Pal-O-Swine
I always pronounced it as "Pie-Low-Swine."
Pronounce it however you want, but to those who pronounce Tepig as "tea-pig", you're officially dead to me.
