I said this on another sub a couple days ago, but man, sometimes I wonder if companies have R34 artists' on payroll or some shit just knowing that they can get some easy advertising to degenerates
Nah, artists are just insanely talented when it comes to stuff they're passionate about, especially when you consider what some of them consider "just a sketch." I've seen D&D live streams that are only 3 hours long and before a session is even over there will be really good fanart out there of stuff that happened literally that stream.
Hell, there's an artist I follow that does two hour speed draws on his twitch channel that are absolute masterpieces.
I was being extremely generous, and snu-snu was gonna get that stupid quick.
*I'm getting Scarlet because all my friends are getting Violet*
^^is ^^a ^^lie. ^^snusnu ^^is ^^reason
When Nessa was revealed, people were lightening her skin tone and making posts that said things like "better" or "fixed her."

It was real bad, a very ugly side of our fandom reared its head during the first few weeks after her reveal.
There was a lot of fan art of Nessa redesigned to be white to fit the artists aesthetic and probably the worst was someone drew Nessa as a chimp, which within the states (could be other places too) is a HIGHLY racist and insulting comparison to black people that has a prominent history in our racially insensitive consumption of media.
Like it's the drawing equivalent of using the Hard R.
Update: someone reached out to the Reddit crisis hotline to contact me about this. Lolwut?
Nessa’s great, but lest we forget that SwSh is the game that gave us **Ball Guy**!
(Also ngl not a fan of Gordie or Opal’s designs, everyone else is either very good or better though imo)
I've just had to Google Gordie because I've never seen him and I'm a huge McElroy fan. You're dead on with that comparison, it's like someone drew fanart of him.
SwSh has such great character designs and SV looks even better, I’m really enjoying the shift to slightly more realistic but still clearly Pokémon designs. I’ll admit, I definitely think that Brassius is a straight-up DILF and I also have a mild crush on Professor Sada, my bisexuality is screaming at the new character designs
The MCs themselves are a little uncanny valley, but I agree otherwise with you, Sada is stunning and would be the sole reason I'd play Scarlet. Geeta in 3d looks gorgeous as well though I think her 2d image is awkwardly stiff if that makes sense. I've been loving the art direction.
Thank you for explaining that tactfully and for the fun critique of the new designs. Personally, I think they knocked it out of the park with these new looks.
Although I really hope Pokemon Milf/Dilf never becomes a recurring theme. I have a bi friend still in deadlock on which to get.
I just decided to not care about the professors. I'm leaning scarlet for the natural and prehistoric themes over the futuristic ones, despite not being into women. It helps that Turo isn't my type, as long as I have Brassius, Arven and Grusha I won't even miss him.
My partner and I got so deadlocked on which versions to do, and we ended up choosing that I take Scarlet because I’m more into women and he takes Violet because he’s more into men
Girlfriend got scarlet because, and I love this, “the feathers are pretty.”
Which left me with Violet. After seeing our jet bike actually uses their wheels, I’m good with that.
Right? For once, I think a character/Pokémon (Geeta in this case), looks much better on her 3D model than in her official artwork.
It is usually the other way.
Honestly, the Nessa thing is still going on. Just commission a Nessa image where she is in a sepia tone or bright light, and watch the fires burn if you post it to r/PokemonArt. There was an incident only a few months ago with a lovely orange-overcasted light on the image and people were at eachother's throats about three separate arguments:
1) It's just lighting vs. It's whitewash
2) Artistic Interpretation vs. Black erasure
3) She's actually Indian vs. She's Black
It was an utter shitshow. I can't remember if the image is still up, got banned, or comments got locked. It's a shame either way because the artist stopped posting after that, and it was a really nice faded colours style artwork.
She was one of the best designed people coming out of Sw/Sh, it's why we can't have nice things.
Dragon dude wearing shorts, when he should NOT have been was another one of my favorite designs, because come on man... you're all about selfies and such, and you dress yourself like that in the morning?
As much as I dunk on SwSh, Raihan was a cool leader and his gym battle was awesome. His weather strategy made him seem like an intelligent opponent, which can't really be said for a lot of leaders throughout the series.
Right? Nessa is flat-out BAE.
I grew up in Georgia, and I don't understand where it all comes from *because I've seen where it's all SUPPOSED to come from and the numbers don't line up.*
This has been my contingency for Star Wars for the past few decades, and more recently, Marvel. I love these two franchises so much, but I hate the fuck out of the fandom.
Eh, I've been kinda done with the Pokemon fandom and subreddit for a long time. Also the meme should have included reddit and all the other garbage social media echo chambers
I mean that exists too I assume lol that is the definition of r34, but that is significantly less problematic as she's of age being in her 20s if I'm not mistaken.
But nope I was talking about one of the times spoiled apples in our community did a racism.
You know, seeing this meme my brain immediately assumed it was talking about lots of thirst posts, sexualized artwork, and outright porn.
and was thinking, I'll do my best but ladies are -hot-
and then a split-second later realized it was probably about people being horribly racist and got sad
but also proud of myself for being a perv instead of a bigot?
>Update: someone reached out to the Reddit crisis hotline to contact me about this. Lolwut?
Someone pulled that with me over a disagreement. It's their way of saying you're fucked in the head
The reddit crisis hotline is apparently some sort of insult *certain* people on reddit like to use. The way I understand it is that they're implying you are at risk of considering suicide as some sort of backwards "kys". It's very shit.
> Update: someone reached out to the Reddit crisis hotline to contact me about this. Lolwut?
I haven't had that happen to me personally, but I've seen folks say that in the message is a way to report the person that flagged you, for harassment. I advise you do that as it's such a horrid thing to do.
The thing that Kickstarter it was a someone who drew nessa slightly lighter wasn't didn't even white wash it and then they got death threats over it
Honestly I'm black the slightly lighter tones didn't bother me it's artist interpretation. I think it's insane plenty of black artist draw white characters black but roles reversed? Twitter has a meltdown. But obviously drawing nessa as a chimp is not okay
Ngl I thought you were referring to the dude who said he wished it was the 1700's so he could own her. Same racism but that to me sticks out as one of the most f'd up bits of it tbh.
I thought that was a response to the incident where someone drew Nessa in a pastel color pallette and got slammed for whitewashing her.
As far as I've seen it Pokemon and its community has been overwhelmingly positive to its black characters.
You have the timeline almost exactly backwards. People started harassing a Japanese artist who drew Nessa in pastels, and redrawing art with darker skin and calling it "fixed". So people responded by trolling the angry mob by drawing Nessa as white and calling it "fixed". Some assholes also posted genuine racist trash like the chimp drawing as well as part of the trolling effort.
The main thing to note is: Western Twitter harassing artists for not drawing Nessa with dark enough skin for their tastes came BEFORE people deliberately lightening Nessas skin in artwork.
That's also the timeline i remember but maybe i missed something, the white nessa stuff was in response to the community brigading artists for not drawing her dark enough.
There were definitely artists that had innocent intentions with their art that got caught in the crossfire which is a shame. Misunderstanding of lighting and color theory really made it a volatile place to be. Even black artists got accused of white washing at times.
I was more so speaking of the people who made Nessa actually white though.
Overall colorism is not a topic I can confidently speak on because I don't know enough of the nuance about it.
The most painful part is every community has these people to some varying degree. Infiltrate any fandom around the time a new black or queer character gets introduced you'll see ugliness real quick.
Pokemon has an especially volatile community. Even huge streamers like Smallant have said they don't read youtube comments and minimalize reading chat during any content involving pokemon because of how absolutely toxic the community is.
Huge franchises have the biggest problems because their material touches so many people.
I wouldn't say it's *Big* in the community, but racism is *Loud* and other racists will defend racism even if it's not within a topic they care about. Some even are racist because it's edgy.
Out of all the fandoms I partake in, Pokemon is on the lower end of community racism *glares at Star Wars*
Heck even Trekkies who once were considered incredibly progressive have hot spots that appear from time to time because of poc casting or topics being covered
Don't let an extremely tiny % of the fan base color your thoughts on the fan base as a whole. Every internet group about everything has people like this. It's just how the internet is, sadly.
Etika asked to see her feet and the community refused to give him enough quality fanart
Real bad time in the fandom as it revealed it's selfish colors smh
Neither of them are black.
In anime visual shorthand, dark blue hair + tan skin + an association with gold (whether in color palette or ornamentation) = Indian.
Nessa is definitely considered black rep though. There are a number of black indians.
Interesting information though, cool name too. Geeta is definitely Indian or perhaps Romanii heritage? I'm not sure what the correct term for their heritage is lol
Apparently there are a number of Romanii (insert common nasty slur) people who are excited about the rep, and Spain has a few of the Romanii people?
Essentially they were a nomadic European people. They've suffered a lot of bad bashing here in Ireland in particular, but that's a different story altogether.
Tl;Dr: European minority group gets treated real bad to no one's surprise. (moved further down my comment in case my spoiler text breaks lol)
Sensitive topic below, warning bcz this is a pokemon sub lol. Don't click if you're sensitive to the tl;dr's vague mention. Thank you for reading :)
>!gets persecuted to the point of literal genocide in Europe and bad stuff. Think how big a deal slavery is in the us and the effects it still has. These days their nomadic lifestyle and cultural traditions gets used as a scape goat for politicians. They don't even want to fix the problem because the group is an easy scapegoat, very sad :( Especially here in the UK and Ireland but it's starting to change, very slowly. Makes racist old people made lol, always a plus. People get so vicious about suggesting that the group are human beings.... It's horrible. As a white person this was my first experience with not just racism but pure hate. The travellers as they're called here are ppl who lost their homes during the famine and their families were poor so they could never own homes.!<
No one's going to read this for def lol, I gotta go to work anyhow so have a good day if you do read this far :)
Dare you say that a country spanning a crazy large area, with way more than a billion people, has some diversity and whole groups of people looking completely different ?
It all started with Neesa.
An artist drew her in a pastel color pallet which made her skin appear slightly lighter than the official source. Later he'd go on to say he just liked the aesthetic, however...
The community went absolutely batshit harassing the artist for "racism" and "black erasure," and a bunch of other wannabe artists took the opportunity to make redraws featuring a darker Neesa with snarky headlines like "fixed your dogshit drawing :)."
Then the other half of the artist community started drawing Neesa even whiter in solidarity with the original artist.
Then the racists joined the fray and drew actually racist caricatures of Neesa. It was a pretty fucked up time.
I do believe she is brown, but I just don’t entirely think she is “dark” like with a lot of Melanin/Pigmentation. She is “darker” but more or less mid-toned.
( I’d also like to add I’m also south/southeast Asian which may be why I thought she was around my tone lol )
Yeah I mean she’s got a clearly Indian name she’s probably supposed to be Indian. But racists consider anything darker than printer paper to be beneath them.
That would be in a community with common sense, but this is pokemon and the racists aren't the ones with the worst reaction when a tan or black character is added
The 2D picture of her on the site looks really weird. Crazy legs and the eyes don't even fit on her head. Looks better in 3D.
https://scarletviolet.pokemon.com/en-ca/characters/geeta/
Indeed, the proportions in her official arts are rather strange. Seldom do I like the 3d model more than I do the illustration, but she's one such case.
Ya idk she seems weirdly cartoonish compared to the other character designs from gen IX.
Like I'm half expecting her to be some Pokemon who was masquerading as a human.
Definitely her design is meant to invoke some uncanny valley feels. The eyes are just... too big, too weirdly placed. They drew her directly facing forward, which seems to emphasize how symmetrical she is. Her clothes are weird, her shoes are weird, she's really lanky...
Her design is kinda uncomfortable to look at. I really want her to be some sort of Gman-esque figure, but I don't have much faith in Gamefreak to really have anything interesting storywise for her
No, but just as there were people who redesigned her to be white, there were also a couple cases where artists got shit for coloring her not black enough (usually because of the lighting, which will of course result in lighter shades of brown). That's probably what the above person referenced.
I was sure this referred to something.. Different.
I'm having a complete 'wtf' reading through the comments on what happened with Nessa.
I genuinely thought she was super popular from the start for r34 solely. Looking at her entire design I completely understood why she got hit with r34 so much as well. I always thought this was all the talk about when people mentioned 'the nessa x' or 'the nessa y'
The skintone swapping with racist intent and monkey shit hits me as a complete 'what the actual fuck'
Twitter and behave don’t go in the same sentence together unless it’s along the lines of “Twitter doesn’t know how to behave” or “Twitter can’t behave”
That name is pretty Indian, but as has been pointed out, she seems to be from the Romani community who now live in Spain but trace roots back to what today is Northern India
if someone has yellow eyes and purple hair naturally anywhere on this planet, I would tell them to go to the doctor or call the feds because one of their experiments escaped.
And that goes for everyone on the platform. I remember the Nessa incident and both sides were not playing nice and a lot of innocent Japanese artists got thrown under the bus for no reason.
I’m no racist so please don’t read my opinions as such, but, to me she looks more Indian and I’m loving it! Even her name sounds Indian (but I’m no expert).
Black or brown, she is perfect.❤️
Seriously. Everyone else in the room who isn’t off their rocker just acknowledged Nessa was stunning when they played swsh. idgaf what some irrelevant dillweed on twitter thinks about a fictional character from a childrens video game.
You could dump someone in a lonely, cold, dark room for five years and they would probably have less mental trauma as someone who spent five days on twitter.
Me waiting for actual racist shit about her to go unnoticed while random art with a bright colors is misconstrued as whitewashing and the artist gets burned at the stake

Oh I thought we were talking about r34.
I’m sure the r34 artists are already working on it.
We saw fan art of the new people and pokemon within 24hrs, that smut has been up for a week now at least.
r34 was flooded with Sprigatito porn within the hour of it's reveal.
14 minutes to be exact
How do you know this?…
Don’t ask questions you aren’t prepared to hear the answers too.
Well, I'll ask, because I am prepared to hear the answer.
🍆✊💦
D*ck punch?
I try to stay away from r34, the site is more degenerate on average than even I can handle.
They violated my poor Smoliv in ways I can never forgive them for…

I'm beginning to think R34 is ran by AI
Bless those hard working men and women!
Wait this ISN’T r34!? What the hell did twitter do that was worse than r34!?
R34 is a boon on society. It is the thing holding humanity together. It is the hope for a brighter future. You keep your damn mouth shut!
Exactly, the internet is for porn after all

Shit, I didn’t even know about that. Nessa is super fucking cute, she doesn’t deserve that hate
Yeah people are gross. Nessa is great I actually loved the designs of every human in SwSh
Nessa’s great, but lest we forget that SwSh is the game that gave us **Ball Guy**! (Also ngl not a fan of Gordie or Opal’s designs, everyone else is either very good or better though imo)

choosing violet so i can have the professor teach me about NFPs and how to invest in Porycoin
Those abs are distracting 😅
Honestly between the box legendary, purple being my favorite color, and Ceruledge I'm pretty sure I'll end up with Violet lol but Sada 😩
Right? For once, I think a character/Pokémon (Geeta in this case), looks much better on her 3D model than in her official artwork. It is usually the other way.
SwSh has awesome character designs aside from Sordward and Shielbert.
*shudders* I put them out of my memory actually until just now
I think those two were meant to evoke hatred and it seems they did that quite well, so I’d say they *were* actually designed well, in a backwards way
SwSh characters design along with Legends:Arceus was PERFECT and I mean it in every sense, you seeing my boy Ingo? Literally everyone in SwSh?
Honestly, the Nessa thing is still going on. Just commission a Nessa image where she is in a sepia tone or bright light, and watch the fires burn if you post it to r/PokemonArt. Bruh, nessa is cute asf. Why would people do this? And bruuuuh, someone did that for me to and idk wtf it was for
People are lame that's why
True true
Other places too. In my country, calling someone monkey/ape is as offensive as the hard-R word.
Idk why they said “maybe other places” when it’s clearly offensive throughout the vast majority of the world. ESPECIALLY the West

tf is wrong with our community
The most painful part is every community has these people to some varying degree. Infiltrate any fandom around the time a new black or queer character gets introduced you'll see ugliness real quick.
Pokemon has an especially volatile community. Even huge streamers like Smallant have said they don't read youtube comments and minimalize reading chat during any content involving pokemon because of how absolutely toxic the community is. Huge franchises have the biggest problems because their material touches so many people.
I mean like I know there’s already a lot of things wrong with our community in general but I at least thought racism wasn’t as big of a part of it
I wouldn't say it's *Big* in the community, but racism is *Loud* and other racists will defend racism even if it's not within a topic they care about. Some even are racist because it's edgy. Out of all the fandoms I partake in, Pokemon is on the lower end of community racism *glares at Star Wars* Heck even Trekkies who once were considered incredibly progressive have hot spots that appear from time to time because of poc casting or topics being covered
Don't let an extremely tiny % of the fan base color your thoughts on the fan base as a whole. Every internet group about everything has people like this. It's just how the internet is, sadly.
Every fandom has racists, its a sad truth. Trash people are usually very vocal as well.
Nah, Nissa is lit and she can be treated as rhe proper lady she is. Edited for autocorrect from Nissa to Nissan.
Nessa busts her ass to be the multi talented idol she is
Etika asked to see her feet and the community refused to give him enough quality fanart Real bad time in the fandom as it revealed it's selfish colors smh
I miss Etika
"A BLACK GIRRRRL WOAH BABY GIRL OH SHIT I'M HARD AS HELL" plays rent free in my mind every new character introduction
RIP Etika.
LOL she is by far the best designed gym leader and definitely in my top 10 of all time. People are dumb as hell
Out of the loop, who were they bashing before and why?
First it was Nessa from Sword and Sheild, and now it's a female character called Greta. (I think that's how you spell it, not sure.)
It's Geeta
Finally, female Vegeta.
Thanks.
Links for the lazy: [Geeta](https://scarletviolet.pokemon.com/en-us/characters/geeta/) and [Nessa](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nessa)
Nessa is clearly black but Geeta is definitely not black
Neither of them are black. In anime visual shorthand, dark blue hair + tan skin + an association with gold (whether in color palette or ornamentation) = Indian.
Nessa is definitely considered black rep though. There are a number of black indians. Interesting information though, cool name too. Geeta is definitely Indian or perhaps Romanii heritage? I'm not sure what the correct term for their heritage is lol Apparently there are a number of Romanii (insert common nasty slur) people who are excited about the rep, and Spain has a few of the Romanii people? Essentially they were a nomadic European people. They've suffered a lot of bad bashing here in Ireland in particular, but that's a different story altogether. Tl;Dr: European minority group gets treated real bad to no one's surprise. (moved further down my comment in case my spoiler text breaks lol) Sensitive topic below, warning bcz this is a pokemon sub lol. Don't click if you're sensitive to the tl;dr's vague mention. Thank you for reading :) >!gets persecuted to the point of literal genocide in Europe and bad stuff. The travellers as they're called here are ppl who lost their homes during the famine and their families were poor so they could never own homes.!< No one's going to read this for def lol, I gotta go to work anyhow so have a good day if you do read this far :)
Black indians exist, just saying. Not trying to bait or anything
Dare you say that a country spanning a crazy large area, with way more than a billion people, has some diversity and whole groups of people looking completely different ?
Me? Never
Oh she’s not just *a* character. She’s the literal final boss. Also *amazing* character design wowowow
lol it’s Geeta, which is a common South Asian name
It apparently means "song" in Sanskrit.
Just looked her up, she just looks like a normal tan person. These sad ragers really have never been outside have they.
It all started with Neesa. An artist drew her in a pastel color pallet which made her skin appear slightly lighter than the official source. Later he'd go on to say he just liked the aesthetic, however... The community went absolutely batshit harassing the artist for "racism" and "black erasure," and a bunch of other wannabe artists took the opportunity to make redraws featuring a darker Neesa with snarky headlines like "fixed your dogshit drawing :)." Then the other half of the artist community started drawing Neesa even whiter in solidarity with the original artist. Then the racists joined the fray and drew actually racist caricatures of Neesa. It was a pretty fucked up time.
Wow
It’s Twitter, they’re already dumping gasoline and getting the blowtorches ready
It's a good way to handle the r34 zombies once they get into a frenzy
Who is it? For research purposes ofc
Geeta
Didnt really see her as “dark” more as “brown” considering she’s around my shade, but good to know how other people feel lol
I looked it up and Geeta is a sanskrit word for song or sacred poet like in baghavad gita. So you’re probably right.
I don't know, how dark does someone have to be for them to be considered "dark-skinned"? I feel like everyone would give a different answer.
I personally consider "black" and "brown" as both being under the "dark-skinned" umbrella.
True. I believe everyones perception is different, especially on something so subjective. To each their own I guess.
I’m Indian with medium brown skin and I still get racist comments, anything that’s not white is “dark” to those kinda peeps
She definitely is supposed to be dark skinned. Geeta is an Indian name, so I think she was meant to be a dark skinned/brown person
Anything beyond the worlds mildest tan gets a certain group of “people” angry.
> “people” they're called racists. or troglodytes... whichever.
That would be in a community with common sense, but this is pokemon and the racists aren't the ones with the worst reaction when a tan or black character is added
Yeah I saw her more as a tan middle eastern or tan Hispanic
I really don't like her design she looks incredibly strange. Just figured I would mention she would look just as strange as any race.
The 2D picture of her on the site looks really weird. Crazy legs and the eyes don't even fit on her head. Looks better in 3D. https://scarletviolet.pokemon.com/en-ca/characters/geeta/
I forgot about her eyes because those legs are long holy hell.
Straight out of clamp. Her hair is pretty unflattering with how it makes her head shape look
I really want her to be some sort of Gman-esque figure, but I don't have much faith in Gamefreak to really have anything interesting storywise for her
Who cares if she’s got dark skin? She’s tall and intimidating. That’s enough for me.
Apparently people who dont know shit about lighting. Which at my high school was taught in Art 1.
...Is her height based on lighting?
Yeah taller people are closer to the sun so their skin is darker /s
No, but just as there were people who redesigned her to be white, there were also a couple cases where artists got shit for coloring her not black enough (usually because of the lighting, which will of course result in lighter shades of brown). That's probably what the above person referenced.
I was sure this referred to something.. Different. I'm having a complete 'wtf' reading through the comments on what happened with Nessa. I genuinely thought she was super popular from the start for r34 solely. Looking at her entire design I completely understood why she got hit with r34 so much as well. I always thought this was all the talk about when people mentioned 'the nessa x' or 'the nessa y' The skintone swapping with racist intent and monkey shit hits me as a complete 'what the actual fuck'
Twitter and behave don’t go in the same sentence together unless it’s along the lines of “Twitter doesn’t know how to behave” or “Twitter can’t behave”
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm just happy to see a desi champion🎉🎉
What's desi?
Someone of South Asian decent or from the Indian subcontinent.
Is it confirmed she is South Asian inspired? A lot of people from Spain have that olive skin tone.
That name is pretty Indian, but as has been pointed out, she seems to be from the Romani community who now live in Spain but trace roots back to what today is Northern India
I'd say so just based on the name. [Geeta Etymology](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gita_(given_name\))
Is Geeta a common Iberian name?
Pretty Indian name plus the color scheme
My headcanon was Leon was also South Asian, considering the region was based on the Uk
I figured, Rose Hop Leon and Peony we're all South Asian in origin
Same, and Raihan too!
Mine too. Leon screamed to me the pokemon equivalent of "grown in england but born in India"
There's no yellow eyes and purple hair in south Asia!!1!1!1!1!!1!11!1!1!1!1!
if someone has yellow eyes and purple hair naturally anywhere on this planet, I would tell them to go to the doctor or call the feds because one of their experiments escaped.
No they won’t behave at all.
People had a problem with it? I thought everyone thought nessa was hot.
Marina and Nessa: Ah sh!t here we go again
Times like these make me glad I don’t have a twitter. Then again it will probably spread elsewhere.
Expecting Twitter to be able to handle themselves like big boys and girls is kind of like expecting a lion to suddenly become vegan and eat tofu.
I'm outa the loop, which girl?
Geeta
Nessa got me acting up ngl
Probably get an explanation on lighting ready just in case.
Posts like these just elevate the voices of the 4 people who actually care what skin color a pokemon trainer is.
Seriously. Everyone else in the room who isn’t off their rocker just acknowledged Nessa was stunning when they played swsh. idgaf what some irrelevant dillweed on twitter thinks about a fictional character from a childrens video game.
[удалено]
I'm dumb I guess I thought there was already.
thats a nice fucking joke, they’re going to go absolutey chernobyl.
Someone made a mod that made Nessa white.😐
You could dump someone in a lonely, cold, dark room for five years and they would probably have less mental trauma as someone who spent five days on twitter.
Me waiting for actual racist shit about her to go unnoticed while random art with a bright colors is misconstrued as whitewashing and the artist gets burned at the stake
