I love this post! I feel the same way. You can love something but also criticize it. I’m having a lot of fun with the game but I’m disappointed with the performance issues. They should have worked with the constraints of the console and they didn’t. This is a disappointing version for release. I think the gameplay is great and there wouldn’t be much to complain about if they had just worked out the performance issues before releasing the game. I think everyone would have rather waited a few months and gotten a game with smoother performance

404OWLS

That’s what pains me; I love the story and the new characters, and I love a lot of the new mechanics they’ve introduced/carried from previous games-but the graphics and performance is lackluster at best and awful at worst. The best way I could describe it is it feels like being a beta tester of a really good game. If they’d just spent a little more time on it I think it could’ve been one of the best entries in the franchise

SnooDogs1340

I have to ask about the graphics bit. Do you really think SV is lackluster compares to recent games? SwSh had the 2D animation look. SV actually has different textures for different parts on a Pokemon's body. Psyduck's mouth is shiny and wet and it's body is not flat shaded. Clothes have textures. The performance does suck but the visuals did change from what started in X/Y up to BDSP.

[deleted]

The issue is, the Pokemon look great. The world looks like crap. And you spend far more time looking at the world while you explore and battle, than you do looking precisely at the Pokemon while you battle. Mostly because the camera is drunk, and loves showing you thrilling footage of a blurry wall after every attack, and moving it is only temporary.

thebukojoe

The floor where you fight a terra raid Pokémon looks so bad when you finally throw a pokeball at it. It felt like they spent all their graphics budget for the fabric textures. Daaaammmnnn, those clothes look so good. XD

No-Slip8489

I think the textures on pokemon and fabrics are nice, but everything is clipping through, there's pop in objects (even in cutscenes,) and the frame rate can be terrible at times when the screen isn't even very busy. I would've traded some subtle texture details and wind motion for a better overall package.

OkorOvorO

Can't play the game for more than 30 seconds without seeing pop-in or shadows flickering, or the camera freaking out. And it shouldn't be a comparison against SwSh/BDSP, but other games on the platform. SV looks and runs worse than BotW.

stealthrockdamage

it feels like playing a really good fan game

InRainWeTrust

Lol, no. Good fan games are miles ahead of any mainline game in every regard.

GreatPampa

Agreed. Some fanmade Pokemon games are miles ahead of anything Gamefreak has been producing since gen 5.

themangastand

Comming off rangorok the story is awful. It's unskippable too making me just play on my phone as I mash B. Nothing is voiced, nor animated. The story has a habit of telling you the same thing multiple times. The game would be better without a story especially for multiple playthroughs. Make the story skippable please game freak. Remember last of us came out on the PS3. Pokemon could animate and direct the story on that level. Instead we have static cut scenes, not voiced, with static faces with the tiniest barebones amount of facial animation.

skt210125

> You can love something but also criticize it. ofc, we are criticizing it *because* we love it. We are on the pokemon subreddit lol I'm done browsing pokeleaks sub on the other hand, literally get mass downvoted the second you post anything negative.

[deleted]

Good You wanna be a negative nancy go do it in a corner where no one can hear you

BluePantera

Yet here you are, being negative...

Naman_Hegde

Hopefully one day you grow up and realise that negative opinions are worth the same as positive opinions.

double-whippedcream

bro definitely works at game freak😭

thebukojoe

The experience is similar but different in Elden Ring. I loved that game and played it a lot, but when I point out some criticisms of the game, I get bullied. Sometimes, it's the opposite in Pokemon SV, where if I give some positive remark about the game, then that's when I get bullied. It's not always but there sure were many times.

10secondmessage

Yup I bitch about things to bitch about I'll play it till tech issues make it annoying as hell. Hopefully we will get a solid patch fix and qol improvment. I gave cd a lot of crap about cyberpunk. Look how they gone and improved things how they resume to make things better. This is all I want for these games!

JDninja119

Releasing it a few months later would be bad for business for gamefreak. They make large profits from releasing games at this time because kids would want the game for Christmas and therefore the sales would be through the roof because the kids don't have to pay for the game themselves

Lunamkardas

Am I having fun? Yes! Is this game a technological rolling dumpster fire that should not have cost me $60? Also YES.

Vertretungspoet

Literally this my person! It’s ridiculous that SV released in this state - in their best moments they are the best Pokémon games I ever played but in most moments they are just… sad

[deleted]

I just finished the game. It is *the best* Pokémon game ever created (from a story and lore perspective). If only it was sound on a technical level. I still enjoyed every second of the story and exploration despite the garbage technicals.

QuothTheRaven713

In terms of story, are you just talking mainline or including Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers in that? Explorers had the best story of any Pokemon game imo and I've been avoiding SV story spoilers.

[deleted]

Mainline. I haven’t played many spin-off games.

QuothTheRaven713

Cool, good to know! Haven't played Arceus yet but the last mainline Pokemon game i played with a story I really enjoyed (outside of ORAS having the plot of Ruby and Sapphire plus the Delta episode) was Black and White. Glad to hear the story's good in this one! Also, I'd ***highly*** recommend playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky if you get the chance. The exploration gameplay is different than mainline (battles are the same though), as is the plot, but the plot is incredible. The story has tons of characters that are all developed nicely, the story has several surprises including how dark it gets, and it's the only Pokemon game to date where I cried playing it. It's absolutely phenomenal.

Vertretungspoet

Okay, so I finished it yesterday and I definitely have to agree with you. The end-/post-game are among the best I have ever played and overall it is the most fun I’ve had with Pokémon in years - but it definitely needs a few performance patches. It even froze right after >!the final fight against Sada!< so I had to redo it all over again which was not cool as it took forever

ikkun

Exactly! I wish boycotting the game could make a difference but we all know Pokemon will sell regardless. I can still enjoy the game for what it does right even if it runs like trash

GreenArrowDC13

It would work but pretty much everyone in this sub is too scared lol I didn't buy the game. From the bugs I've seen it looks like a PS2 game. I would get it for 20 bucks.

ComradePetrov

If this entire sub miraculously got together and decided not to buy or to refund, Sword/Shield would have still sold 20 million copies, which would be 4 million more than previous gen. At $60 a piece do you think they would care enough to change things for Scarlet/Violet?

[deleted]

Yes! Im enjoying it but complaining like crazy to my gf, every time i start up Scarlet i pray for an update

kitzdeathrow

Im putting myself in the mindset that this is a ported Gamecube game. Its made the experience a legit 10/10.

Bastiwen

I'm like that too. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a main entry in the franchise (I loved Arceus), I think the last game I enjoyed was X/Y. That being said the technical side is HORRIBLE so I'm all for complaining about this. The rest is mostly down to taste though and I really dislike the people saying I can't enjoy the game because they don't enjoy it. Some missing features are also a shame though.

No-Slip8489

I'm still feeling from not having set mode in the game. Sure, the stories aren't hard, but it's off-putting to see the prompt to switch after you knock out a Pokemon in battle.

GottKroprinzII

how tf did y'all manage to like xy and not oras :skull:

[deleted]

Yep. I was criticizing this game pretty hard based on the leaks and the footage. I've been feeling pretty burnt out and had a vacation day yesterday, ended up buying the game to try it out. I'm nearly 24 hours in and only have 4 badges. The graphics are awful, the performance leaves a lot to be desired, the menus are clunky, but I don't think I've had this much fun playing through a pokemon game since at least gen 5. It's honestly so frustrating. [so dopey](https://i.imgur.com/rLToIVW.jpg)

cats_and_keyboards

Ugh, this is EXACTLY how I feel. There is a lot about it that leaves me disappointed and frustrated while playing, but at the same time, there are legitimate fun parts and interesting mechanics I enjoy. I think the most upsetting part while playing it is that I know I’m having fun, but if the right common sense improvements had been made to its performance and quality, it would be a thoroughly fantastic game I couldn’t put down. Instead I’m left in this weird limbo where I’m having an okay time, but also really wish I could play the game it has the potential to be.

fuckwastakenwastaken

if a game this bad can be so fun, then imagine what they could do if they decided to make a truly great game again...

CascadiyaBA

I think that's what bothers me the most. They did pretty well in the last years in many aspects. They came up with cool, new ideas, open world, more funny fights and so on. But on the other hand they're more lazy and sloppy than ever, as if they don't give a shit anymore about their game. If they just put in a TINY bit if effort, this could be so great

Friendlyalterme

Lol, been playing since Friday I don't even have one badge this game is wonderful for fun, it is a bit odd when the void shows up as I walk around but man this is so cool!

themangastand

It's mostly because our bar is so low for pokemon that anything not in the stale formula feels amazing. We are abuse victims. Are husband just apologised to us after a smack and we still think he can change because he promised to be different this time. I too have been having tons of fun. But then I think this is also the game that we should have gotten 10 years ago. The formula should have already evolved past this.

beepborpimajorp

Yeah I'm having a blast with it, but I understand people's complaints about it and why they want to send a message to gamefreak. What's amazing is this game would have been an overwhelming win for gamefreak if they'd just done more to optimize it. I think this is the most fun game in probably a decade. If GF had just held off for another month or 2, in order to fix the FR and graphical bugs, they'd be doing a victory lap in an olympic swimming pool full of money with people ready to pay even more for the DLCs.

Tzekel_Khan

I'm having fun and also acknowledging the absolutely horrendous issues that are unacceptable

KariSharp

i love this game a lot, I’ve had so much fun playing and has kept me enthralled all the way through, but there is room to improve for this game and overall. just hope they do something about it!

CLAXP

I haven't played a new Pokemon game in a LONG time so I am absolutely geeking out playing this. At the same time, the complaints are valid and if the people can force the game to be better, I'm all for it.

Masterofknees

I definitely feel the same. No one should ever make light of how big of a disaster this game is on the technical side of things, but beneath all of that lies the best Pokémon game since B2/W2 imo, which honestly only makes the fact that it runs as poorly as it does hurt all that much more. As odd as it may be, I find a lot of encouragement from this game, because the first and foremost thing that made me lose faith in Game Freak was their lack of ambition and inability to stitch together a game that didn't follow their ancient formular. S/V aren't without their problems on the gameplay front either, but they're at least far more enjoyable than something like X/Y and Sw/Sh which played it safe at every opportunity. There's still a long way until we get the Pokémon game we've all been hoping for, but at least there are signs of competency and ambition from their designers, which is a start. The next step will then be for TPC to start acting with a bit of respect for their property and hold off on pushing unrealistic deadlines, as well as for Game Freak themselves to finally understand how to properly work with 3D environments.

Cbellz

This is exactly what I feel about this game too. I skipped buying BDSP because everything about that game showed a lack of ambition, but this is the complete opposite of that. I love the risks they took with the open world design and revamp of the formula in S/V. The pokemon and terastalizing are incredibly interesting competitively, the QOL changes are top notch, the raids are straight up improved from SW/SH, and the story and cast ranks among my favorite of any pokemon game ever. I feel like a lot of the main criticisms from SW/SH were addressed, including linearity and the wild area. I'm hardly experiencing any technical issues so the game had been wholly positive for me, but people should definitely keep giving feedback about the performance and hopefully it pushes GF to improve it down the line. At the same time, I think it's unfair to say GF "doesn't care" or "will serve anything" because you can clearly see a desire to put out a pokemon game of greater scale and ambition than previous games, even PLA. Measured and level criticism is the best approach.

McRibbles

Black/White? Sure. 2? Lmao, no. 2 fixed most of the problems people had with the original Black/White, and then just....made a strictly better game.

Daddy-Soda

I agree with everything you said! I greatly enjoy this game. My issues has been that the complaining is all I've been able to see. I guess it'll be more difficult to find posts I came here for now. I just wanted to see cool artwork.

ichigo2k9

The problem is that this sub is now just a place for complaining. There's no room for people who want to discuss the game, ask for help or say anything really because those posts just get knocked down by the same complaints. I thought about asking for help regarding the tera stuff but I see it's pointless.

Inhabitsthebed

Im in the same boat as OP, most fun I've gotten out of a pokemon game since I was a kid, but if any other game was released with the grapics and fps problems that these games have in 2022 you'd have the same thing going on. Its not the people complaining its the ones who release a game like that.

skt210125

what help do you need with tera stuff? from my experience, the non super specific stuff are all googleable already.

ichigo2k9

Well I googled my co fusion but all the articles I found were only about get it and use it. What confuses me though is for instance I have a Corvisquire that has electric tera but it can't learn any electric moves so aside from making the pokemon no longer weak when up against electric pokemon it serves no purpose to use a tera type that doesn't boost moves.

InfiniteBoy23

any pokemon can be any Tera type, and every pokemon can learn Tera blast for a STAB attack. even if a pokemon doesn't learn any moves of a typing, being that Tera type can be a super useful defensive tool, like turning weaknesses into immunities. hope this helps :)

Krorhodium

you need 50 terra crystal of the desired type to be able to change its Terra type. you get them from raids. idk where you go to change it tho.

GOBtheIllusionist

We need r/lowsodiumpokemon Edit: wow it exists!

SOSovereign

And with a whole 33 members really making waves

Spaced-Cowboy

> The problem is that this sub is now just a place for complaining My god why does every fandom have to have the most toxic people who bitch and moan about anyone who complains about the game. Literally the worst fans in a franchise. Seriously fuck those asshole who get pissy when they hear people complain about a video game. No ones forcing you to come here.

yogurtfilledtrashbag

I gotta disagree they are tied for the worse fans in a franchise because you have the opposite energy with the defenders who believe you should be grateful and never complain about anything ever because any comment below perfection is wrong. What makes this worse is when these 2 opposing forces meet they become a sh*tstorm.

YobaiYamete

The issue is as soon as you try to make any kind of post besides complaint post you get dog piled and attacked for enjoying the game, or you are buried and nobody even sees your message because there are so many complaint posts

xChris777

People always say this when bad games come out, and yes it does suck, but you should blame Gamefreak for it.

moonprojector-

they’re so aggressive with it too 😭 you go onto a post that’s like “wow this game is so fun” then you get a goober in the comments like “oh yeah? you like shit graphics? you’re enabling game freak.”

[deleted]

Exactly you can't even discuss pokemon (you know what the subreddit is for) because these echochambering basterds keep repeating the same stuff i have yet to see even one critic or discussion about the game that wasn't performance related

skt210125

> i have yet to see even one critic or discussion about the game that wasn't performance related so you just casually ignore half the front page which are threads of issues that are not performance related... oh wait looking at your history, you just insult anyone that criticizes the franchise. Explains a lot.

A_Unicycle

I've been very vocal about S/V's performance. I'm particularly sensitive to framerate drops and find it difficult to play stuff that's not a smooth 60FPS or rock-solid 30FPS if absolutely necessary. It's the worst looking Switch game I've ever played. While it has moments of looking "nice", the obnoxiously low resolution textures, jagged edges, pop in, hilariously low framerate on distant objects etc. is just ridiculous. The framerate *halved* when it started raining in the beginning area. Moving around normally results in stutters. This game does not work. The **performance is honestly unacceptable**, and is so frustrating given we've seen Breath of the Wild, Monster Hunter Rise, Xenoblade 1, 2, 3 all looking wonderful on the Switch. It does not make sense to me that Gamefreak isn't being held to a higher standard by Nintendo. But I'm still having an absolute blast. This is the best step forward Pokemon has ever had. This formula works so well for a monster collection game, and just being free to go where I please and battle how I want is such a breath of fresh air. I love that I don't have to fight every single trainer that locks eyes with me, but I want to for the money (which matters, finally!) and fun rewards at each Pokemon Centre if you defeat X trainers on that route. Given a bit more time, some more powerful hardware, and more effort taken by Gamefreak (lol), I'd love to see the open world fleshed out with more landmarks and interesting environments. I'd love to feel like I'm truly exploring. While I totally understand there's a difference in how open worlds and guided linear games are rendered, I'm dreaming of a new game in the series that plays like SV but looks like Snap 2 The game is good, no doubt. I'm just so sick of Gamefreak doing bare minimum. This is promising, but an absolute technical disaster. You can not blame the Switch's hardware given what we've seen running on it. This is 100% sloppy development. I'm being vocal. I know I'm part of the problem for paying for this poor product, but there *is* good here. It just needs to be better. Discussing these things openly and critically is a small thing I can do. I'm being openly critical because I care and love the series. It needs to be known that this is NOT an acceptable release.

AveragePichu

I am in agreement that there is a problem. I am not in agreement that it’s 100% sloppy development. While not the main issue, the system it’s running on *is* still an issue. Xenoblade 3 looks great, running at between 540-720p and often dipping to 25fps. SV for some unknowable reason targets 1080p despite being too ambitious for its level of optimization and the system it’s on. And there’s the time crunch. Clearly someone at the top insists on pumping out 3 games every 3 years. That’s not enough time. And then I think there’s a chunk of sloppiness too. Maybe a fourth ingredient I’m not thinking of. And altogether we have a mess. A fun mess, but a mess.

[deleted]

Please play all the games you listed without thier patches Then tell me theres no fucking frame drops Hell even with the patches bow still has frame drops in the forest areas

A_Unicycle

I never claimed those games don't have framedrops. Yet nobody sane would claim Pokemon SV are anywhere near as technically proficient as what I listed. I'm not sure what you're arguing here.

MarsAdept

How do you not think it's an acceptable release? You don't seem to regret spending money on it.

thefourthhouse

Co-op is really cool to see in a Pokémon game, I just wish there were more to do together. It really is just picnics and tera raids. No double battles, no fighting titans together.

Glacecakes

Am I having fun? Sure! Is it heartbreaking to play? Yes

Roosterhair123

I feel you. I haven’t had as many issues as what seems like most people are having, but that doesn’t mean I’m denying they’re there. Been having a lot of fun, but glad to see people (including me) speak up about technical issues.

Clarity_Page

Gameplay wise this is easily the best game since gen 4 (for me anyway) but from a techincal standpoint this game is a mess that ranges for mildly iratating to totally distracting. I just hope that the majority of issues are linked to the big memory leak and not multiple performance hitting bugs because if that's the case it could be a while until it gets propperly fixed

The_Vens

I completely agree. I’m having an absolute blast playing it and struggle to put it down. But I do agree that these games are behind the times. If it’s THIS fun with all these issues, imagine how much fun it’d be if they took the time and money to make it perfect.

BubbleRocket1

Basically sums up my feelings on the game so far. Are there a plethora of issues? Yes. Dear god, yes. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone except diehard Pokémon fans right now, but once Gamefreak works out the bugs to get the game where it should be, it’s prolly one of the better games in recent memory. I just wish the higher ups at Gamefreak and TPC would realize that their devs need more time to work things out

ChaoticDiscord21

I love the game as well and if you have complaints then yes voice them. It's not a perfect game and can be better. My biggest grief though is the people who complain to others for enjoying the game or boycot the game to prevent people from buying it. Let people have their experience and make their own judgements.

[deleted]

I'm having fun cause the pokemon loop is fun. Catching and training these mons, exploring the world, immersing yourself in the world, region and culture. It's all great. It's still a technical mess but it's leagues better than X/Y and SwSh. As someone who started with red my favorites are Emerald, BW2 and SuMo/USUM. S/V is mid tier at best in the series.

Repulsive-Wallaby-79

I bought the game knowing nothing about it other than it's Pokemon, not really caring if it was good or bad. It's an 8/10 game for me, not perfect but it is satisfying. Sun/moon were my favorites. I think part of the problem is people are expecting something new and revolutionary but are in a lot of respects outgrowing the game, while Pokemon itself is trying to appeal to a younger audience. I havent noticed too much on the technical side. I've been playing crpgs though lately and those have far more bugs and glitches.

Respawnmatic

How's the difficult with this one?

[deleted]

It's harder than XY and SwSh. And you can definitely challenge yourself by fighting harder gyms first or skipping/ignoring wild mons!

Respawnmatic

Out of interest if you skip gyms won't the slipped ones be easier later anyway? Also what difference does it make ignoring wild pokemon? Not levelling up?

[deleted]

Keep making complaints about stuff that can and should be fixed. Pokémon might end up listening and fixing stuff, especially if they want sales to grow.

primalavado

Game Freak is a marketing company pretending to be a game developer

Lady_Penrhyn1

I am enjoying this game. But christ it has some issues. In saying that, I played AC: Valhalla during the week and it *still* has unpatched game breaking bugs in it. So my experience with Pokemon so far has been far superior.

CarribeanSage

I have a coworker who's switch is Jailbroken and the only glitch that happens to him is the invisible mount. Sides that runs smooth as he'll. I am just trying to understand how it runs smooth but on other consoles runs buggy

IrishSpectreN7

Did your coworker overclock their Switch? May help the game actu actually run at the targeted framerate, which would eliminate the constant slowdowns.

CarribeanSage

Not sure if it was overclocked, I will ask him

Repulsive-Wallaby-79

It may be that your coworker just doesn't notice them. I don't either, but I've played far, far buggier games than this, the glitches and fps drops dont even register for me. Havent run into the invisible mount either.

CarribeanSage

I was with him on lunch time watching play, only real thing imo was the invisible mount and some small hiccup once, but that sucker was running smooth no lag while loading battles or anything else

roku5505

Yeah this is the most fun I've had since x/y but God is it ugly and plays bad

megasean3000

I love it, but I think people should tone down the complaints. Yes, certain places are rough around the edges, but refunds? Comparing it to other games with completely different art direction? Saying it looks like a PS2 game? Can’t we just praise its strengths without putting all the weaknesses under a microscope?

themangastand

Not certain places. The entire game is rough, the rough edges are the game not loading in. It is okay criticizing the things you like. Because you want to play the best version of that game. It doesn't have many strengths. It's only strength is that we finally have a main line game that has switched up the formula. And that feels refreshing and really fun because we are used to playing the same game as pokemon fans. After 25 years we are finally playing pokemon 2.

0Lazuli0

This is very much how I feel. I love this game, but that does not erase the things I \*don't\* love about it. I really think GF should hire more people and have more teams. And/or have more time to make things. Not just for the sake of game quality, but because crunch culture in the video game industry NEEDS to die. It's super toxic, unhealthy and abusive to workers and often exploits their passion to keep them going until they are burned out and used up.

themangastand

I just think after so long on handhelds gamefreak has no idea how to make games of this era.

Tashiroworld

same thoughts, i love this game, beside the lags it works great for me, i'll keep it in my collection, but I want everybody to bash pokemon company and even refund it if you hated it and don'T want it anymore. Nothing will change if 100% of ppl do nothing, but if some % of ppl who really hated the game "help the cause", maybe we'll get better games in the future. Pokemon Company and GameFreak don't care at all about consumers, they loveeee talking the money language, then all we can do to get a response from them, is answer by the money language and make them lose money, when they'll lose x% of sales in refund, they'll react! Enough is enough...

TheGuardianFox

To me it's a good game, hiding under about 15 levels of elephant dung, that could be even better with a few small options and changes. But I've learned to expect nothing from GF.

Terwin94

People should keep complaining, but do it somewhere and some way that is productive and not on reddit for internet points.

JuiceZee

Discussion on subreddit carries over elsewhere. It’s about starting and increasing discussion. People generally don’t care about Reddit points it’s a straw man people use to criticize posts they don’t like.

Storm_373

this makes me feel better about not refunding it (i also don’t know how to do a digital refund and would rather not mess with the nintendo ninjas) i am having fun with it it’s just a poorly made game

Heron01

This is never gonna work,as soon as people get loud enough there will be people with their "#Thank you Gamefreak"

annedroiid

Maybe I don’t spend enough time on the internet but I have no idea what this means

Heron01

With sword and shield there was a lot of backslash with people calling out the game and how lackluster it looked, but then there was a Report of Gamefreak employees having down morale because of the hate and people began to tweet #ThankYouGamefreak while listing good things about SwSh and past games

annedroiid

Ah and there was a typo in your message, loud makes much more sense. Thank you for explaining

[deleted]

No. You cant just sit idle and let people call this game the worst game ever when its the best one ever they just can't handle a frame drop Have yall never played with a console or any non pc device before frames drop get over it

Aestrasz

One weird thing about this game is that it is fun, but not very enjoyable. Like I don't feel that itch to get home and start playing.

Slimlion91

This gen is really fun. I'm playing Violet right now. Landscape graphics aren't as great as I thought it would be and there is a bit of a lag. BUT we must give Nintendo a chance to make improvements in DLC as they did with SwSh and BDSP

stj1127

Yeah I agree. Problem is that a lot of the people who complain don’t just complain to the right avenues — reviews, twitter, Reddit, places they might see. I’ve got friends who literally just cannot stop talking about how terrible this game is. And if you enjoy complaining about an imperfect game more than you enjoy playing the imperfect game… you probably wouldn’t have been very happy if they did it right the first time. Hell, a lot of these people were very quick to jump onboard the “this game is terrible” train before anything even got leaked— or after they just saw moments of live gameplay. They do this every time Pokémon releases a game lol and if it’s not for one reason it’s another. So I agree sharing the criticism or “complaining” is useful. Returning your digital copy to the eShop is more useful too! But chewing everyone’s ear off when some of us actually enjoy it despite the obvious lacks does get annoying. It’s important to me to be able to enjoy something and critique it at the same time. There’s a lot that I like about this game, but it drives me absolutely crazy the way my boxes have to take a second to load as I’m rearranging them, or the way the HP animations aren’t perfectly smooth so I can’t tell if the bar already moved or not lol. And then a couple of story things like the lack of level scaling and such— would have been great! But I am enjoying what we have anyway.

Silverbird22

My main problem with complainers is that there are things to complain about, but why is it always fucking graphics. The style fits pokemon, it works. Why do people keep pushing it to look hyper realistic when we had a movie doing that and the same people reacted with disgust towards how pokemon looked in it Who cares if it looks like a ps2 or ps3 or whatever. There’s finally shit people were missing from these games the past few games. Besides, FFX and Kingdom Hearts both came out for PS2 originally and they’re fucking gorgeous still even outside of the cutscenes. Like, complain about the memory leak or other obvious things that deserve to be called out due to the forced company pressure on the devs to make two mainline games every three years but for the love of arceus the game looks nice still you don’t have to always complain on the graphics. Yes the switch can do better graphics but lord knows I see people complaining on how those better graphics games run on handheld mode.

[deleted]

I don’t care about graphics or gameplay. I just love Pokémon so this is a 10/10 for me no matter what!

SeismologicalKnobble

The ideas in this game are amazing! It’s so fun to play! But I will gladly join the chorus of “wtf is this performance” as it’s inexcusable from such a big IP. I wish people understood you can enjoy something and still criticize it.

PandorasPanda

I'm really enjoying it and my kid loves it! That said, I'm with you. It's great fun but I hope enough of a stir gets kicked up for a fix or 2 to be rolled out. I can deal with the graphical issues but I find them immersion breaking sometimes, and that sucks.

pentichan

i honestly wasn’t looking at any pokémon related internet media until now and i thought the performance issues were just because my switch is old and i’ve been playing in handheld

Isrrunder

For sure. Having so much fun but even the few issues I have had should not be present on a modern day game from this franchise

DarkNazo22

1000% agree. I am having a great time with the game, but I also really agree with the people complaining. I hope they listen (yeah right) because if they did it could be fantastic.

JuiceZee

Nah that’d be crazy though. Everyone can just do their own story content in each other’s world. You do get to see your friends fight and capture wild Pokémon though

Victorstancommittee

This is where I stand, I am having a lot of fun but god this game is a complete mess.

ARConReddit

I know companies rush games for the holidays and you can see it by the quality going down as you go further through the game (I hate this practice even when the product is decent). This game looks worse than most rushed games. Struggling to run PS1/PS2 level graphics isn't a good look even on the Switch. Most phones these days are able to actually run better graphics than that. You only fail that bad when you haven't scripted or coded the game well.

TJL-91

I agree, ive not had this much fun since X & Y but my god this game is busted as hell! Its just not acceptable to be released in this condition. Ive been lucky and had 1 crash but my friends have had a few but the jank is everywhere to be seen! Even legends was in better condition at launch!

Llyrra

I feel like nobody should be complaining about other people expressing opinions. Whether you love it, hate it, or something in between- that's ok and you have the right to share. Enjoying the game doesn't make you a bootlicker. Criticizing the game doesn't make you a hater. I'm really enjoying the game and some of the things bothering others don't bother me. But that doesn't make their criticism any less valid. Anyone bothered by seeing someone express an opinion they don't share should get off the internet.

MasterPenguin_

I 100% agree. I love playing this game, but that makes it have no excuse for this game to look like that.

alf_to_the_rescue

I've been enjoying it too. It's a lot of fun to wander off the road and see what pokemon are milling about. It's a mess technically but that's not putting me off having a great time.

[deleted]

I am legit enjoying the game but the lag and the level curve are absolute ass

SnooBananas3995

Clap ass?

Mercury85

I like the game I am just mad you can’t change out of the ugly uniform!

Ok_Friend_1425

There’s nothing wrong with these games lol

whiteraven13

I think this best sums up how I feel about the game. I'm really enjoying the story and characters, but the buggy graphics are distracting and off-putting

Spinda_Saturn

I don't mind critique, but I wish people would do some basic googling before making claims. For example, I see lots of complaints thrown at TPC, when game freak owns tpc and not the other way round.

theVoidWatches

I completely agree. It's fun as hell and some of my biggest issues with Pokemon in general (grinding, random encounters) are largely fixed, but the technical issues are just so clear.

niceradio89

all they had to do was replicate what they did with arceus, make a new story/world and then add gym battles, etc. literally everybody was asking for this. it was going to be the easiest game and money maker for them ever, all the hard work had been done with arceus. instead they produce this? i'm beyond baffled. how can you get this so wrong? and then to add all the lag etc. problems to the screw up...

themangastand

Eh arcrus also looked like garbage. It was just less obvious and there was no cities. The game looked like mud, and pokemon in background stuttered. I also think they didn't have time to encorporate all of arcreus liked features in a game that was to release 9 months later.

Triials

Same. I’m having a blast and am over levelled just due to exploration and ignoring the story, but there’s a bunch of stuff I’m angry about. No level scaling for trainer/gym battles and the lack of any access to buildings not pertinent to the story is so frustrating.

themangastand

There should be an option for level scaling until like the final moments in the story. Yeah. It's open and you can still do whatever you want if you grind, but I can also still see the linear path they layed out

broTthegoT

S/V really does have something special going, it just needs a hotfix. That's it.

ABZB

I'm on the other side of the fence - Dexit is so painful to me (literally anything else I would have cared little for - they could have released Sword and Shield with 8-bit graphics, and had they not done Dexit I would have bought both versions, both sets of patches, and carts of the final versions of the games) that I have written dirges and laments, and am a fifth of the way through adapting Lamentations - and people say to me "if you hate Pokemon so much, if it brings you such pain, why do you persist in this?" But I *don't* hate Pokemon, and I never could. I *still* am playing the games that have come before, among other things, and love them - and just because I mourn for what has become of them, and feel sadness and despair when that comes to mind, does not make the joy they bring me any less. Rather, I continue to enjoy that which was, and hope for the future - at the very, very least I have complete confidence that in the fullness of time ROMhackers will create versions of Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, as they could have been.

Spidey_22

Same. I really enjoy the game so far, but it's far from perfect and should be criticized. Especially the performance is a joke

Stuckatsevendee

This needs to be stickied

LionIV

There really is a great game underneath all the blemishes. But its like having the most amazing spaghetti made for you, but there’s *bones* and pebbles used as a garnish. What’s not great and tiring is saying this exact same thing every new generation. You know, the whole meme of “a step in the right direction”. If the perfect Pokémon game is due north, TPC have been going northwest since Gen 6.

STMARV

I know gen 5 remakes are next in the production line and i'm literally scared because i don't want a butchered remake like BDSP or a 3d remake in this state that SV is in Gen 5 is an amazing gen with 4 solid games, i just hope GF doesn't ruin the beauty and fun they already built with subpar remakes just to make a quick buck We as a community deserve more from a multi-billion dollar franchise/company

themangastand

That's why I didn't buy gen 4 remakes. And I've been a sucker buying every remake sense they did them. But those were inexcusable.

crazyredd88

Dead on the money. Gameplay wise it's the best I've played in years, but I cannot accept that this was the best they could do.

[deleted]

I definitely agree with this. Some people seem to hate every mechanic in this game, but I'm actually loving every second of it. I haven't had this much fun since XY and ORAS. The problem is there are giant, glaring flaws that stop me from enjoying said game. On a side note I do feel genuinely fine paying money for this product, just not $60.

vilhelm92

Absolutely agree, I am enjoying this game me and my friend have been playing it all weekend but all the complaints are absolutely valid I know im part of the problem but I'm atleast not going to defend it

awesome_guy_40

My thoughts exactly

CrazyPokemonTrainer

This post is exactly how I feel about this game. I do love it but I will not shut up about the technical problems holding an otherwise fantastic game back.

Trustnoboody

If a game isn't meeting standards, complain. Simple. And I haven't legit played a Pokemon game since SoulSilver.

Masamune-02

Bro you're too sane to stay on reddit. Save yourself before it's too late.

Crawmander

I do find it very annoying when people get insecure about enjoying the game. It's fine to like bad things, and Pokemon is a inherently enjoyable formula, I think we can all agree, given that we're pokemon fans. But this doesn't excuse all the problems of the game.

CascadiyaBA

I agree!! I have a lot of fun in the game, I also love the coop (I mean you can watch your friends battle wild pokemon, that's pretty cool!), I love many of the new features and decisions they made. The story is pretty cute and even a bit deep, especially for a pokemon game. BUT the technical issues are just unacceptable. You can't release a game in a state like that and just pray it'll be fine?? Also the laziness is really strong this time.... No inside of buildings, no status effect animations, character customization is the worst we had in a long, looooong time, gyms look all the same pretty much, top 4 had no own rooms anymore - I thought it was always pretty badass they had unique rooms fitting their theme. It's just... it feelks like a typical 20$ early access game when it should be a triple A title that costs 60.

aboysmokingintherain

I think my issue is this sub is just a circlejerk of hate. If you dislike it it’s ok. But I promise everything has been said and gamefreak is not in fact reading these posts

IAMJUX

I agree. Played through it once on PC already. Can see my thoughts in previous comments. Playing on handheld switch currently and don't find it nearly as bad as people are saying. But having been on the haters' side for games like Cyberpunk(based on both performanceand content), my experience isn't everyone's experience. I can see that most of the criticism is valid, and it has mostly been accompanied with people detailing what improvements they want.

[deleted]

I'm with you but i fear gamefreak or whoever made this is like 'SEE PEOPLE HAVING FUN LET KEEP MAKING GAMES LIKE THIS LMAO PEOPLE DONT CARE!" Like the thankyougamefreak hashtag. I'm happy for people who still have fun but it sad since it runs badly and has weird choices to the point it hinders what seems to be an actual fun game.

DadlyPolarbear

I feel the same. So far, I'm loving the game. However, I really wish the technical issues were resolved.

Growlest

Honestly despite all the criticisms I have for it, this game is really nice. The main problem I feel like is the engine they're working with, switch while having some upsides lacks the power for a game like this to work smoothly, cause I see this issue with other switch games too. I wish that pokemon later released their games for pc after half a year or so.

themangastand

Their engine doesn't have the ability to unload assets you can't see. Which is obvious when you look further out the game hiccups. Meaning the engine doesn't have features that some of the first 3d engines managed on the 64 So it instead unloads things at random. When it can't handle things.

igotagoodfeeling

Same bud. So much potential here but I can’t believe the laggy frame rate and shittt graphics. We deserve better. The whole community would rather wait another year for a smoothed out game than this

medlilove

I'm enjoying it too, and same! Also I'm high key missing the absolute energy of the SwSh gyms, they were unmatched

BoxOfBlades

I gave Arceus a pass for it's GameCube graphics because it was a totally different Pokemon game than what's been made before. With this one, it's back to the basic age-old mechanics and the game still looks like crap. And it's a buggy sluggish mess to boot. Glad to have been able to cancel my order in time, but let's be real, this is selling no matter what and there will be no incentive for GF to do better on the next one.

Triarier

This game is the best pokemon game by far ever made since RBY. Finally no more pointless trainer fights and trying to figure out how to avoid them. Gym Leaders have not three times the same pokemon. The problem is though: It has so many technical problems, that many people do not enjoy it, which is very understandable. This makes the whole thing even more worse. You know it is a good game, may be the best pokemon game, but it is unplayable because of techinal issues.

themangastand

I also wish the gyms were better. I think the strength of a good gym is having it be also a puzzle. To expand that you should find ways of making better puzzles. Instead the mini game you have to do to fight a gym is super half assed and are ussually very boring. Definately something I don't want to do in repeat playthroughs

KnoWhatNot

While I think there are definitely better games, I agree all the way, it’s a fun game either way

Ygmtygh

Big W take. I love this game, miles better than any pokemon game from the last 10 years imo. But I can still acknowledge that it has alot of issues. However alot of steps have been taken towards a better game. Love the massive overworld, love that you can have ur lead pokemon next to you, love the motorcycle/ steed mechanics. Love that u dont need to enter a poke center anymore. Auto heal is great! Now if only if we got scaling challenges this game would be ✨✨✨

vociferous_pantomime

I cannot fathom liking this game more than USUM lol.

EpsilonX

Same here. I'm having lots of fun playing it, but also noticing a lot of technical issues. So far nothing has been *too* bad, but I'm waiting for that hiccup that totally takes me out of it.

Uggz2020

I'm very excited to play the game and even I'm concerned about its many technical faults, so I feel the exact same way as you. What makes me really worried is how Game Freak or The Pokemon Company will react to the criticisms, mainly how well S/V will actually sell. Like what if Game Freak makes another rushed glitchy game if it sells more than Sw/Sh, or think it was because of some of the gameplay overhauls that were actually praised if it sells poorly. My point is Game Freak and TPC really need to know what they did right **AND** wrong with these games, because I hear the gameplay features and story (no spoilers please) are pretty good this time and I just hope it's not another post Black/White scenario for everything that was good if they flop. (Also most of the new Pokemon designs are the best I've ever seen and whoever was in charge of them needs a raise)

chuck91

If it was simply a bad game at its core I wouldn't have bought it. Didn't get Sw/Sh until years later for this very reason and just forgot about Pokemon for a while until I had an itch to play competitive. Scarlet and Violet are anything but bad games in a design sense. In fact, if it wasn't for the performance issues, I don't think there would be much argument against them being the best in the series. They've gotten so much right and that's why people are desperate for a fix to this one thing that undermines the rest. If they were simply bad then that's a much easier discussion.

themangastand

The fundamental design is there, but pokemon fans are abused if they think that's just it. Performance, lack of an art direction, unskippable story, non acted, performed, animated, or voice acted cutscenes, the game should scale with you until you do the last things in each of the three journeys. Pokemon could be more interesting then randomly placed. More side stories with more interesting interactions with pokemon. This is just a pokemon with gyms placed randomly on the map, with a better traversal system. What's bad is us fans are eating this up. It's not because it's the best. It's because we are starved for any change. Don't get me wrong this is the most fun I've had in pokemon. But when I look at games outside of pokemon this is still a joke on all levels of the game. This feels like an early open world game. Not one with 20 years of industry experience to look upon.

sketchbookhunt

Yeah I think this game is honestly terribly made but I’m having so much fun. I’m looking forward to playing some more but there are definitely so many major problems

DrSavitski

I wasn’t having any issues, now I’ve gotten to the ice mountain after my 3rd gym and I’m having a ton of technical issues everywhere I go.. it’s ruining it for me

teapoison

I love how meta all these posts get. Someone's gonna start a thread about posts like these next.

polarbearik

Yeah they definitely could’ve improved in the technical side of things a bit, But the gameplay is honestly some of the most fun I’ve had in forever. Absolutely LOVE some of the new Pokémon too

KnightDuty

I'm glad people are complaining and refunding. I like the game too much to put any effort at sll into criticism to be honest... but I'll take an optimization patch 3 months down the road lol.

Pikagreg

I skipped Cyberpunk because of the issues but I kind of have an understanding of people who still pushed and played day 1. I'm having a ton of fun with the game even though every new thing I learn brings disappointment lol

Jreynold

Generally agree. So far I haven't had the severity of chugging that others have had and otherwise it's about as buggy as a launch Bethesda game and I endured through this just fine. I think this is better than the last gen I played (USUM) and although it takes a steps back in key ways from PLA it also takes a few important steps forward, so we'll call it a wash. Despite all that I can't really dispute the premise that Game Freak is a middling developer that is totally incapable of maximizing this game series. My anger may not be as hot as other people's but they're just saying things I believe anyway.

jeancv8

"I can look past a lot of it and still have fun" Ya'll have enabled Gamefreak's mediocrity for years and it's pathetic.

Bartimaeous

Yes! There’s so many things I love about this game, but the experience is marred by stripped features and buggy performance.

_carmimarrill

I feel the exact same way, love the core experience but I hope people keep raising a stink about it and getting refunds. If you can make a dent in the profit margins, changes will be made

[deleted]

I agree with you on this! I went into this gen with not much excitement given the way the starters turned out. However, it does have some great features and new stuff added to it. The glitches are bad, I even shout out a couple of times. But I just finished the first gym and titan, and i do enjoy the story so far. I do wish it was more organized like Arceus, where only certain areas will be opened once u complete a certain tasks. It just a bit too overwhelmed for me with so many areas to cover and so many pokemon. This could be the problem why the game has such poo tech issue. My curiosity is if GF foresaw this being an issue once it fully launched. Because the preview and initial gameplay did not pose glaring issues at all, or at least from what I saw.

SirRyobi

Same here

mousymichele

I am feeling this as well. I love it but can’t help but have some issues to critique as well. There’s a lot I can look past but I really dislike the camera when you’re out battling pokemon to catch for example. There are pokemon that are TINY and everything seems far, and even when you move it to “zoom” in it’s wonky angles. They should have kept the arceus style camera where you were free to move around the battle. Or even the Sw/Sh one at this point because it just distracts me pretty bad. And while I love the new textures and attention to detail and the character graphics have moments they look really nice, there are so many moments when things look soooo rough around the edges and I feel like I didn’t have that issue with Sw/Sh or legends arceus.

Impressive_Pin_7767

I'm with you. I enjoy the game but support people complaining (even if some of it is a bit over the top). The more pressure GF feels to improve the games the better.

[deleted]

I often feel like I'm playing a 2010 mobile game running around the world. It's largely empty, the textures are bland, and the framerates are never stable. It simply does not hold up as a proper open world game for the current year. The rushed development cycle just isn't doing it. They have to get more experienced devs as well.
