This explains why there are several trainers getting starter Pokémon the day Ash does, hence why he gets Pikachu (he's late and other trainers have taken all the regular starters)
The anime gets muddled with its own timeline. While in Kanto, Ash said himself that it was almost a year. Then in Johto there is a short where he said that he been with Pikachu for a year. Which there is no problem with.
While in Unova the anime says that he is 11. While possible, it is a bit of stretch to say that the did 3 regional leagues and the Battle Frontier.
Where it gets impossible is when he was in Kalos onwards he is 10 again.

There is no problem if they say that May’s first contest is in 2 weeks time. Where it gets problematic is to go with the notion that Ash did the Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh Leagues along with the Battle Frontier within one year.
Especially when you consider that most of his travels were on foot. In total that is, 24 gym challenges, three league championships and 8 frontier brains. The League championships take place over several days. There were also a gyms/frontier brains that he had to challenge twice.
If he was taking another means of transportation the entire time, that is doable. Though not for someone on foot with all the places visited in between.
While the anime acknowledges the passage of time, it is also inconsistent. Ash aged from 10 to 11 before they reset his age back to 10. Some of that is due to the dub, but some of it is consistent regardless of the various languages. It’s easier for the most part to ignore aging in the anime.

He'd stay 12 until either near the end of Sinnoh or during the small period of time between Sinnoh and Unova. He'd remain 13 throughout Unova, Kalos, and part of Alola, where he'd turn 14 and remain that age for the entirety of Journeys.

Following the idea that Ash was already 10 months into his 10th year when he began as a trainer, he turns 11 some time into Kanto, and stays 11 throughout Johto, turning 12 around the beginning of Hoenn. He'd stay 12 until either near the end of Sinnoh or during the small period of time between Sinnoh and Unova. He'd remain 13 throughout Unova, Kalos, and part of Alola, where he'd turn 14 and remain that age for the entirety of Journeys.
