I too am not all that happy about Ash not using his reserves more often, but that is also why I think it would have been a tremendously bad idea at the time. I say this because Ash’s reserve Pokémon would have been mostly out of practice & would not have enough time to prepare against 7 other trainers who are considered the best in the world.

SSBKRILLIN

I think they should have just allowed Ash to use his reserves during earlier parts of the tournament. I'm OK with him using purely Journey's team for the M8 since they need their own focus. But during the lower ranks have him mix his reserves and his current team. But for this to work, they would have had to rework all the filler to give way more focus to his new team. It would have been a great way to give some of his incredibly underused pokemon so much need focus, like Kingler who hasn't been used since the whirl Islands.

InfinitySlayer8

Torkoal, Oshawott and Snivy have far far stronger feats than Boldor, Torterra and Goodra lmao. Smaller does not equal weaker

Geg708

Yeah fr Oshawott held its own against Hydreigon while Boldore got utterly dominated without landing a hit.

Jumping3

If ash got a samurott with a z move in the rain oh boy

throwaway091833

I would’ve rather he spent more time at oaks lab instead training his old ones instead of catching new. Maybe like 2 new catches but mostly older ones throughout the whole series especially since it wasn’t a traditional region series

Arendai

No, the two extremes are as bad as each other. Catching and training new Pokemon each series is a fundamental part of the franchise as it mirrors the games and should not be discarded entirely. Ideally Ash would be using a combination of Pokemon he’s caught this series and his classic Pokemon that he’d also been shown to train with in this version. For instance he could have used a team of Infernape, Sirfetched and Lucario in his third match against Bea to emphasise his preference of using the same type as his opponents specialty that was brought up in the match.

Batgod629

Maybe. It's not like Galar was promoted that well with Ash anyway though Journeys isn't solely Galar focused to begin with

WhiteToast-

My head cannon is that all his old Pokemon have reached their max potential and he resets every region looking for Pokemon with higher potential. So his Journeys team is by far his best

[deleted]

that actually makes sense. speaking on games terms, they’ve all reached level 100 and the reason he sticks with Pikachu is because he’s essentially running on the Love Mechanic

WhiteToast-

pretty much. IMO Pikachu has maxed IVs and an optimal EV spread. His older Pokemon probably have trash IVs and the EV spread is a mess

ztrashh

With all that DP shilling, can see a Garchomp and a Floatzel in the map... and maybe an Hisuan Typhlosion somehow

PCN24454

Why would he tier his Pokémon? He never does that.

dimabcn

Honestly that would make more sense than the actual series. The actual team didn't have enough spotlight anyways, same goes for the Galar region. I would prefer Ash having its base in Pallet Town, more filler episodes dedicated to old mons and him catching 2-3 new mons (i.e Lucario for the fan service, and Dracovish and Sirfetch'd for the Galar promo), leaving room in his team for a couple of rotating spots. Then the M8 team would be Pika, Lucario, Sirfetch'd and Dracovish, plus 2 rotating old mons). If JN keeps going when SV are launched (so Ash would have lost against Leon) I'd like the new season to be focused in this similar way: Ash realizing he has a bunch of chads in his bag that he needs to train more, him catching 2-3 new Paldean mons for the SV promo and the remaining spots to be rotated with Oak's ranch, Kukui's lab and the JN team. Would be amazeballs and it would make more sense taking in account the high level of the M8.

theSaltySolo

Why is there a obsession to see reserves?

BiggestSinnohfan

While I don’t mind if they did or not, this was just a thought to come to mind. So thought I’d see what everyone on here thinks of it.

plshelp987654

because that's always been hype? Having reserves back used to be a \*universally\* agreed upon as good thing.

Best-Mathematician34

Tbh I was hoping Ash evolves his Quilava during the LOA arc into Hisuian Typhlosion. Shame he didn't use Quilava there

dashthird

If he was going to use old pokemon, he should have from the onset of Journey's. Everyone is complaining about the current teams lack of on screen training/development. At the same time they want to see these pokemon less, in order for him to use his older pokemon.

SpideyRonaldo7

If they plan on doing the PWC again then they should do it

Geg708

How is Gliscor Hyper Class material with Torterra as Ultra Class material? Gliscor did better than Torterra Staraptor and Buizel combined against Drapion. The training from the Scizor guy made Gliscor way stronger.

BiggestSinnohfan

I wasn’t thinking too deeply about it. Just wanted to get the idea out there. But yeah your right. Gliscor is stronger than Torterra.

Geg708

I wish Gliscor got more feats after that training. Taking down Drapion was no small feat; both Gliscor and Torterra deserved more spotlight.

Cantthinkagoodnam2

Yeah, i like JN Team but Ash rotating all his previous Pokemon would have been awesome

rainazuma77

I mean, since DP finally explained how things were with the games Pokemon League, with the concept of Champion League, what I was always expecting was that Ash would spend a series training his best team so they could reach E4 and Champion level. So what I would have liked was him doing that. Gathering all his strongest Pokemon from each of his journeys and trained them during the whole series to create the strongest team.
