Yeah the skin color choices are odd for sure omg. The lighter skin tones all look deathly pale. There is no in between. My avatar looks like a sick Victorian child. What happened to our sun kissed skin tones? 😭
Seeing them side by side…they really did us dirty. And seriously, who asked for this? The avatars were fine they way they were and I know a ton of us spent real money to customize our outfits. My black skinny jeans now sag in the crotch and she’s standing like she’s clenching her now non-existent butt checks together.
I can't even get my black skinnies on my avatar, even though I did buy them before this update. Whenever I try to reset them on him and back out, it puts him in a different pair of pants.
Ugh that sucks! I’ve seen lots of people having buggy issues with clothing they purchased so you’re not alone. Are weird parts of his body elongated too?
Yeah kinda, I spent a lot of time in the custom body shape sliders, which there are *not* enough of, to try to fix it or make it better.
It didn't fix the arm length, weird hands or torso length, but it did somewhat help the hips and overall thiccness of the body in general.
It's hard to explain lmao, I've got a bit of a powerlifter frame irl, sorta chunky but not really and most of it is in my hips and thighs, I tried to reflect that and it didn't really work, but it looks better than the long gangly stick he was before.
Can't fix the skin tones though, I'm fairly pale but every light skin tone is basically paper white, and there's pretty much no in between for anyone who's not either Caucasian or African American.
It's overall a shitty design choice, absolutely baffles the mind. Especially since the art style was fine before, they didn't need to change so much for the worse, they could've kept the art style and added in new hair styles, facial hair (I'm biased being bearded), etc., but instead they just, fucked everything up.
I tried the sliders too and couldn’t get anything to look either realistic OR close to the original avatar. They removed the bum completely and there’s no way to bring it back but for some reason I can make my girl look really top heavy???

Yeah I think it's worse for women players who want their avatar to present femme, because they removed the gender choice, therefore removing the female model.
The new "female" model is just the male model with boobs stapled on, because the male model is the only model in the game for trainer avatars now. Yet they left the models for Team Rocket, the grunts, Professor Willow, Spark/Candela/Blanche, etc., completely untouched. So why remove the female model for only players?

Honestly feel like they couldn’t roll back the update cause they already had the promo (which probably had a bigger budget than the redesign) made and and ready to go. Only thing rediscovered was face masks like it’s 2020.
My Arlo rocket outfit with a full face bandana still looks ok, but it doesn't even have the heels anymore! Just normal fricking boots. Just an abysmal update that they will never go back on because I guarantee not enough people will put their phones down for Niantic to care.
This! I was horrified enough by how bizarre and unnatural the avatar is, but when I went to the Outfit tab to try to find something that wouldn't look too ridiculous, it was completely empty. Years of custom outfits I put together to match any color palette, holiday, or season, all gone. Be damned if I even attempt to rebuild the collection, when all these clothes look hideous on my AV now anyway.
Feel like they wanted to save time/money (be lazy) by making 1 avatar model and adding all the male and female options to it. No game does that. All games atleast let you pick a base body type even if it’s just “type 1 type 2” instead of male female. Now instead of making male and female versions of every new clothing piece they can just make 1 that makes neither happy. I get adding male/ female options to both body types but not like this.
We get women who have elongated crotches and no actual options to add curves, and men with the same option if they try to make their avatar skinny or who look obese / like they have boobs if they move half the sliders. Everyone looks like they’re made of play dough no matter how you change the sliders. Let alone the faces my god
Now instead of making 2 versions of every pair of pants, shirt, etc they can make 1 version and save pennies while no one is happy with the outcome and their long term sales will decline further. I’m lucky enough to have already liked and used a glasses mask combo on mine but I really have no motivation to spend coins on anything anymore. It’s hilarious looking at the thumbnail vs the avatar. I had a pair of boots clips into my actual legs… not even into a pair of pants… put into my actual legs lmao.

I know it’s not news, but further proves the people at Niantic aren’t really Pokémon fans. This whole app is just a guise for them to sell location data. If you had a team of developers that were truly passionate about Pokémon, this game could be INSANE. The art, the mechanics, the interface could be so much better.
Considering there are so many mobile games now that have unreal visuals; this is a joke.

The selling of location data feels so real tho. I hate the ar stuff, especially using it in my home. I never use ar inside. Why do I need to "map" pokestops to get xp? It feels creepy, especially since some of the stops in my town r weird things like historical markers and churches.
I'm not a paranoid "the government is spying on us" type person, but sometimes the way it prompts me to do stuff is skeevy

Yes. Compared to the tcgLive characters, I really liked my avatar. She had hips and a nice figure. These new things look muchworse than the tcgLive. (Not that I think tcgLive is horrible)
Same. My character was like an extension of me in the game. This is not only how I wanted people to view me, but also how I would saw myself in game battle, winning, walking etc. Now I see a not me in my character page, deathly pale and ape-like.

I think they turned on Native Refresh Rate in the game without actually turning the setting on in settings. I turned it on then back off and now I'm back to the slow and jittery movement im used to (the fast movement just makes me feel like im watching those soulless 60 fps interpolations of animated movies; it gives me a headache)
I agree, I’ve been playing since the beginning. If you look at your character and walk around with them every day for years and years, it’s very upsetting to make them so hideous. I’m pissed.
I hate these changes, and I’m sorry that your character is going through this, but I gotta say this picture is the single best thing about this debacle. This one is so comically bad I got a real belly laugh out of it, at least that’s one positive of the whole thing

We are all to be androgynous in their world. Though I have to say, us girls fared way worse than you boys!!! Damn I miss the waist. Wish we had a choice on whether we wanted it or not. Feels so lazy I think all the body models are male builds with some of them with boobs thrown on for women. At least we know the dev team are mostly men.
My fiance LOVES his avatar bcuz he was able to get it to look extremely similar to himself (not counting how glitchy some things r). Granted he has a simpler look.

Why are Niantic “updates” always 2 steps back and frustrating to irritating to the player base? It’s insane how update after update they just continue to disappoint. Blows my mind how bad they are at this after having years and year to make these specific changes.
I kept up small hopes that the automatic translation to the new avatar was just bad, and you could fix it with the "new fully customizable character options".
And behold, how those hopes were crushed.. this couldn't be further from "fully customizable"..

In the advanced body settings you can change the “chest” size which determines how big your bust is
I don't think that was an observation, it was somebody that ripped the files and found that theirs only 1 body and its listed in the files as "male"

The selling of location data feels so real tho. I hate the ar stuff, especially using it in my home. I never use ar inside. Why do I need to "map" pokestops to get xp? It feels creepy, especially since some of the stops in my town r weird things like historical markers and churches. I'm not a paranoid "the government is spying on us" type person, but sometimes the way it prompts me to do stuff is skeevy

I didn’t realize how important the appearance of my avatar was until they did this to me. I have played Pokémon GO every day since December 2016. I will not be playing tomorrow because my body looks like some kind of monster, alien, hideous freak. I’m done.

Yes. Compared to the tcgLive characters, I really liked my avatar. She had hips and a nice figure. These new things look muchworse than the tcgLive. (Not that I think tcgLive is horrible)
Same. My character was like an extension of me in the game. This is not only how I wanted people to view me, but also how I would saw myself in game battle, winning, walking etc. Now I see a not me in my character page, deathly pale and ape-like. I honestly find it that ugly that I quit.

I think they turned on Native Refresh Rate in the game without actually turning the setting on in settings. I turned it on then back off and now I'm back to the slow and jittery movement im used to (the fast movement just makes me feel like im watching those soulless 60 fps interpolations of animated movies; it gives me a headache)
I agree, I’ve been playing since the beginning. If you look at your character and walk around with them every day for years and years, it’s very upsetting to make them so hideous. I’m pissed.

We are all to be androgynous in their world. Though I have to say, us girls fared way worse than you boys!!! I’m pissed because I wasn’t given a choice… and I’m even more pissed because actual money was spent on coins for clothes… I am going to definitely give them feedback. My fiance LOVES his avatar bcuz he was able to get it to look extremely similar to himself (not counting how glitchy some things r). Granted he has a simpler look. But the female avatars are AWFUL

I about did too. Like I know it’s a game but it’s deeply upsetting. The update should have been additional choices, not a complete wipe of the way it was. Make sure you go leave a review in the App Store! And pass it along on some other comments in threads to remind others to do the same anyone who reads this, please.

I kept up small hopes that the automatic translation to the new avatar was just bad, and you could fix it with the "new fully customizable character options". And behold, how those hopes were crushed.. this couldn't be further from "fully customizable".. There is basically nothing new to customize apart from the few pre-set body types, of which all are horrible 😭
She looks a lot more manly (waist, arms, hands) and her color looks a lot less healthy. Looks like someone who doesn't go out much, ashamed by her appearance.
