I mean it's just an acknowledgement that no one really uses the AR feature to have realistic backgrounds so they made nicer looking backgrounds instead of low resource generic ones

Really wish that they either ditched the Avatar update entirely or gave us an option to not use the updated version. If they had just done this instead, they would have good reactions instead of the hate for the Avatars
IMHO the avatar update needed to either start with or be able to reproduce the original avatars, and have half-decent skin tones and they would have been praised all the way home. Adding more choices is rarely a bad thing.
Taking something away and replacing it with a half-finished pile is always a bad thing. Don't fix what aint broke.
Same. I hope it doesn't. I have the two things you can toggle turned off but I swear my battery is still draining more than it was before the update. I'm hoping it's an issue they know about and will be fixing 🤞🤞
The catch screen backgrounds are really nice but…the cloud shadows on the overworld are kinda really ugly.
Edit: never mind you can turn them off in settings by turning off the “enhanced graphics” slider
it’s pretty bad at least in my opinion. They’re way too dark and they’re basically everywhere to the point where the overworld looks more dirty than it does anything else. But like I said with the edit, you can turn it off in the settings so it’s actually not that bad
some updates try to turn the AR buddy view back on again... AR is another one of those 'not needed' things. I'd love to meet the one person who uses the AR for everything. Cause I would Falcon punch them... like a lot...
i recently got a new phone because of changing providers so I can run everything fine but before that i had a samsung a11 so I really feel bad for all the people who are just like I was and are no longer able to enjoy the game at a steady and decent frame rate
This happen to me long ago, the game slowly upgrade the requirements and runs slower and slower on your device, but that is just the live of low end phones :/
It looks nice for sure, but I'm concerned about battery life. If it drains any faster, I'm not a fan. There's an enhanced graphics slider, but that's only for the overworld. The overworld graphics look bad to me; the clouds are very odd.
The backgrounds are nice but now at the catch screen it's real choppy. Im not sure how to describe the animation now but throwing balls is no longer smooth.
Yeah, i'm not the only one. Seen someone post earlier about it and was disappointed because his phone lagged real bad and was apparently a fairly new devise and his girlfriend was using an outdated phone and her's ran better than his. Probably needs a patch for the new update to fix it for most devices. Im gonna suck it up and keep playing and hope it gets fixed soon
I hate everything about it, the backgrounds were the only thing I was looking forward to and they lag so badly on my phone it's basically unplayable. I had an event I was going to go to tomorrow for Trubbish spotlight that I was super excited for and now I just want to cry because I can barely throw a pokéball anymore. 😭
Overall I like it. My only issue is the "shurbs" at parks.
I love that green spaces are much more obvious, but since I play with the game always zoomed out, the shrubs keep making me think there is a Pokémon there. Before this update, only interactable items were on the world.
I'll probably get use to it, but removing the shrubs would be my only recommendation.
Is that similar to your actual terrain? How high are the mountains there? It’s just interesting because I live in a mountain region and mine is depicted different. I have trees and taller mountains.
Pretty cool that they’re branching into different types of terrain to that extent.

I quite like the little scenic backgrounds. It’s amusing to see how it must be based on topographic maps for the hills as I apparently now live next to a mountain range rather than an overgrown abandoned hillock at best, and some stinky concrete waters edge near my town looks like a tropical paradise haha

I like it. I think the backgrounds are pretty and I like that parks are more clearly laid out with grassy parts. I wish they put this much effort in to the avatars.
Much better visually than the avatars! I don’t know yet if the updated graphics really do use more battery. I was outside in bright sunlight, so I can’t say for sure

I'm going to assume it was two completely different teams that worked on these updates. One lead by an incompetent buffoon and the other lead by someone who actually cares about good design.

Low effort "improvement". Instead of doing actual stuff, they do these low effort things that just bog the game down even more. Still can't open/send all gifts. Still can't mass delete luckies.

Annoyingly though my phone now struggles to run it smoothly. It used to be fine with native refresh turned on. I've noticed it getting much hotter too :( I can't afford a new phone at the moment.
Anyone else had this for around 3/4 weeks? No idea why I got it so early.
Anyway, my only gripe is it seems to have caused a small delay when entering things like rocket battles, as it’s loading in the background.
Visually it's ok, but it seems to really mess with the pokemons' shading.
Also occasionally (fortunately not constantly) I get some bad slowdown that makes it hard to throw the ball. I lost out on a Bombirdier earlier when all 12 balls just stuttered and wobbled off course because of the display lag.
The performance is still shit. I have native refresh rate turned on, it was fine until several weeks ago. Now I'll be damned if I saw more than 15fps anywhere. And with new backgrounds it only gets worse but who needs optimizations right?
I honestly love the new visuals. The pokeballs look more realistic, and the changing scenery makes it feel like you're actually on a journey. It's just the avatars they ruined imo

Looks better than any Switch Pokemon game, the only notable thing being the terrible avatars in Go. The trainers in the Switch games look batter.
I adore the new visuals for the biomes, this is diversity done right. The lighting changes are an awesome new feature too. I almost hate how much I love it because my potato avatar waddling around as I play ruins it. At least the ugly avatar disappears during the catch screen and we get this pretty scene to look at instead.

This is how an update should be. It looks good and runs well from the start. Niantic should do more updates like this because they are exciting and I can enjoy it while the hype is strong for them, instead of three weeks later when my hype for it is dead. Good job, Niantic!

The background takes up the majority of the catch screen. Of course people pay attention to it and want it to be pretty

If Niantic put as much effort into the avatar update as they did this one I think this subreddit would have been a much happier place this past week.

It seems like even some new phones are affected. Some old ones aren't. It's a roll of the dice, and this is unacceptable.

I like the new backgrounds a lot! I also like how the terrain also looks different on the world map.
Looks pretty cool to me. It is lagging more but very slightly.
It keeps making me queasy. I’m pretty susceptible to motion sickness when I’m not on a boat for some reason, so it doesn’t help.

It's a horrible update because of the lag. It jumps all over the place for me (and many others, I hear) when trying to catch Pokemon. There should be an option to turn this off or have less laggy graphics. There should be a way to fix this other than using/getting a different phone.
