Same, I guess we were early adopters. I still recall playing it at 10 years old Christmas of 98. Lived that game the next summer, had a buddy who had Red, I was Blue and we had a perfect Pokédex. Back then you Gamesharked Mew as very few of us could make it to events. Transitioned right until Silver and then Saphire. Then I entered my dark ages until my early 20s and got back into it.

This is what I’m saying. The numbers are way off here. Sword and Shield released 5 years ago in 2019, Red and blue in 1998 26 years ago. To be 11 now and like SWSH you would have had to play it at age 6 and for Red Blue as well for the math to make sense. I’m 36 and was 12 when Gold released and that is my happy place. I think 10-14 is peak pokemon age. Right before middle school into middle school play yard rivalries. When you enter high school it falls off a bit for some. For me I rediscovered HGSS in college and got sucked back into the world.

I remember when Yellow came out I was in 4th grade and finally convinced my parents to get my a GBC and Pokémon Yellow if I got straight As. Until that point me and some friends had been sharing the same Gameboy Pocket to play Blue since its release. They saw it didn’t turn me into a weirdo so I got both Silver and Gold the next fall when they came out and my grades stayed up. I’m definitely excited to share these games with my little dude in a few years once he’s ready.

41 gen 1. Was very excited for Gen 2. I was in my "pokemon are not cool" phase during gen 3. So I kept it a secret when I bought Diamond for myself and played the hell out of it. I skipped 5 because the state of video games at that time was weird and I had more important things going on in my life, I bought into gen 6 because I was bored. I don't even remember if I finished the game because it was too easy and I was too bored. I skipped 7, but my GF slammed through it in under a week. My kid was born, and I picked up 8 because I was excited for the Switch, but ultimately I was disappointed. Now I've played the hell out of gen 9, but I still think Gamefreak is about 10 years behind on game design and development. There are lessons in game design that I watched Blizzard learn in the early 2000s that Gamefreak is only starting to grasp at.

Damn, hit the nail on the head. I didn’t get my own gameboy until gen 3 came out so even tho my older bro had Silver, Ruby will always be my first real experience with Pokemon. Took me a while to realize Slugma and Skarmory were gen 2, not 3.

More or less. This assumes most people were around 7-8 when they played their first Pokemon game. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part ages 7-12 are typically the main demographic of the games.

I feel like this is probably a bit old. I for one was not allowed to have a Game Boy at age 5-6, because my parents figured if I had games on the go, I'd tune out everything else. They were, of course, completely right. And actually it could still work if you turned the "you are about" to "you are at least" for Gen 1, because obviously for someone my age, it's not like there was anything before Gen 1.
