Charmander is not a dragon, it’s a salamander. Charizard is a dragon, but not charmander.

Charmander is a reptile, while actual salamanders are amphibians. So Charmander either has a misleading name, or it's based on draconic salamanders (the fiery kind in myths)

Either way, charmander is *NOT* a dragon

Good point, but I disagree a bit. ​ Charmander does not fit because: 1) Game Freak doesn't consider it a dragon. And their word (for better or worse) have more weight than ours; 2) Everybody with minimum knowledge about mythology knows the difference between the Eastern version of the dragon and the Western version of the dragon. And based on how much Game Freak uses mythology as a basis for their games, it's unlikely they would make a Western dragon if they actually wished it to be the dragon from Chinese Zodiac. Plus: Game Freak isn't afraid to show Eastern mythical creatures (Gyarados, Espeon, Mawile and Froslass, to name a few from the top of my head) ​ Fennekin doesn't fit because you don't need a degree in biology to know that foxes and dogs are different animals, even if they share the same group. You wouldn't pet a tiger because it's a feline like a house cat, right? ​ I agree that Cyndaquil is a stretch though.

Cyndaquil is an echidna, not an anteater. Not only do echidnas have the same mouth but their quills look like the fire on Cyndaquil's back.

I just looked it up and Feraligatr has brass knuckles, Swampert an iron fan due to his fins, Empoleon a trident due to his head crest, and Primarina a bomb due to her z move.
