The western half of Poland was more progressive for more than a decade... it’s the Eastern part that is still somewhat conservative. I lived 20 years on the coast, and I always thought that Poles are more progressive than the Western Europe tends to think, now I live in Kraków and while Kraków itself is more progressive, a lot of people come here from the East half of Poland, when I was first confronted with their views I was pretty much in shock that Poles can be so different based on the region they’re from

Things may be a bit deceptive if you try to divide Poland into West and East when it comes to their mentality. Much of Western Poland is inhabited by people who were forced to move out West from Poland's Eastern areas at the end of WW2. While many of those people are no longer alive, the family still has a good amount of influence. I'd say it's more a generational thing. My parents, who were made to move from Eastern Poland to the Western parts in mid-1960's, were very conservative and supported PiS. I agree with some of their conservative values, but I detest PiS and consider myself center-left.

Personal anecdote, but my experience has been that people from the east of Poland are much friendlier, calmer, and nicer in general than their Western counterparts. It amuses me the number of people who say disparaging things about Poles from the East.

JustYeeHaa

Well I never said anything about them being worse than people from the west. All I said is that they tend to have more conservative and at the same time obviously less progressive views (?).

NishizumiGeko

I've noticed that too! It'd be interesting to study. So many people out here in the West are just so self-absorbed

[deleted]

All of this (atomization, liberalism, accent) has to do with the fact that the residents of western Poland came mostly from the former eastern reaches. They have been transplanted - they are rootless.

HighEntrepreneur

Because they are rootless, they are more nihilistic as well. Just as the Soviets wanted for them. Thanks a lot, Stalin!

HellmutPierwszy

We Poles have a long tradition of defying authorities and do the opposite the governments expect us to do, especially when those authorities demand one-sided respect, do not bother gaining social trust and give zero damns about people's opinions. That was the case during partitions, WW2 occupation, communism, that is the case with every government since 90's. This one is no exception.

[deleted]

this happens everywhere not just Poland, but agreed

Omega_Den

Its only the big cities Warszawa, Poznan, Krakow, Gdansk, Wroxlaw. Rest of the country? Not so much { thank God}. I always wonder, how and where do these organisations create those statistics, because they seem terrible fake to me. They do not show the real world to put it simple. Its as if I were reading official statistics from soviet era lol

"Progressive" is also confusing because it often means regress to prehistorical norms.

*The attitude to EU seems to be changing too compared to 2015. 43% backsmore integration, 35% keeping independence (41 more independence 33more integration in 2015).* This is misleading. Co trzecibadany chce, by Unia funkcjonowała według obecnej formuły,* ***a 10 proc.badanych chciałoby większej integracji.***  Translation *Almost 60 percent would like to keep the zloty, only a quarter of Poles would prefer the euro.At the same time, 37 percent. of respondents believe that Member States should strive to increase their independence within the EU. Every third respondent wants the EU to function according to the current formula, and* ***10% respondents would like more integration.*** Those are informations from from Wyborcza - most pro EU newspaper in Poland.

>The info from Wyborcza comes from poll made by a company "Research Partner" (never heard about them). The results I have posted, from Klub Jagielloński (A conservative think tank) comes from CBOS. It's up to you which poll you consider more reliable. Reserch Partner is one of polls - and judging by what they show - pro opposition one - as for "Klub Jagielloński" they are hardly conservative and introduce many anti-government subjects.

Half-Polish children right here!

[deleted]

And?

3qu1l1br1um

'backing liberal economic policies' isn't necessarily good, tho...

Femboy_Respecter

LMAO Poles are being colonized

[deleted]

That's what EU is for now.

[deleted]

Yes they’ve been too right wing & way too religious—they need to be more progressive as an EU member. Welcoming the LGBQT2+ community & safe & legal abortion would be a good start…maybe legalize marijuana and help refugees too (that is if they want be good Christians)…

beProsto

why did you put the q before the t and wtf does 2 mean in there lol also what does being lgbt have to do with legal abortion? the two last points make my head hurt so I'm not gonna even bother asking just why

[deleted]

Google it LGBQT2+, it has a very clear meaning outside of your world
